The Health Care Systems Research Network

AN INTRODUCTION

About the HCSRNAbout the HCSRNThe Health Care Systems Research Network (HCSRN), formerly known as the HMO Research Network, brings together research centers embedded within some of the U.S.’s best and most innovative healthcare systems.

Collectively, the HCSRN represents over 1,900 scientists and research staff with methodological and content expertise from an array of disciplines – including:

• Epidemiology• Economics• Disparities • Outcomes

• Pragmatic trials• Quality assessment• Genomics• And many more

What is the HCSRN?What is the HCSRN?The HCSRN is a virtual organization: A group of independent organizations sharing resources to achieve a common set of goals.

The HCSRN is this… But not this….

An informal alliance Not a legal or corporate entity

Sustained by membership dues, and largely volunteer based

Not an externally funded research network

Devoted to publishing findings in the public-domain

Not internal research analytics departments for health systems

Increasingly diverse in its health system membership

Not just HMOs

HCSRN MembershipHCSRN Membership Members are public-domain research departments

embedded in healthcare systems

Membership dues support a small, distributed staff and a shared infrastructure

Dedicated research staff conduct non-proprietary research

Collectively, a community of embedded researchers with unique “delivery system science” expertise

Affiliate status for new members until key HCSRN integration milestones are met

HCSRN GovernanceHCSRN Governance Formal bylaws document governance processes

One representative per site serves on volunteer Governing Board

Consensus-driven governance model (1 vote/member)

Elected Chair and Vice Chair lead the Governing Board and Executive Committee (2-year terms)

Processes, Tools and ResourcesProcesses, Tools and ResourcesThe HCSRN has developed a wide range of tools and resources to facilitate new and support existing research activities.

• Common data model (VDW)• Ceded IRB review SOP and

IIA (inter-institutional authorization agreement)

• Pre-negotiated subaward and data use agreement templates

• Communication collateral• Web portal with private

sites for projects and committees

• Contact directories• Stock text, tables, and

figures for grant proposals• Toolkits and guides from

start up to close out• Public and private websites • Listserves, monthly

newsletter• And more…
