Last Thursday I had the privilege of joining in the festivities that were part of ‘Pi Day’. This is the second year in which, on the 14
th March (3.14), our
Secondary Mathematics teachers have had activities in celebration of Pi. We had pie orders - the apple pie was very tasty. And, of course, a competition to see who could recite Pi. It was interesting to
note that the competitors were mostly female and while I was proud of all, Finn in Year 5 is to be commended for his great effort. The winner was Rachel B from Year 7 who recited Pi to about seventy-three digits. Now while that is phenomenal in itself, it is also rumoured that when she arrived at school that morning she only could recite Pi to about thirty digits.
Last Friday we had an Open Evening at MDCS. Thank you to all who spared their time and efforts in both preparation and on the night. It was a beautiful evening and delightful to see the involvement of so many from within our community.
Tonight and tomorrow we have our first Parent-Teacher meetings for the year. If you are unable to attend please make every effort to catch up with teachers in the coming week/s.
Please also be mindful and prayerful of the Cockatoo Montessori school community that earlier this week were informed that their school is closing at the conclusion of this term. This is truly a loss to our local community.

(WWCC)
After recently reviewing the MDCS Camp Policy, we would like to
highlight to you the requirement that parent helpers staying overnight
on camps are required to have a WWCC. We value your presence and
help at camps, so are personally encouraging you to get a check
done….
There is no charge for volunteers.
WWCC are valid for 5 years.
Having a valid WWCC would also enable you to take on other roles
in the community where you are supervising kids (eg. at church,
cubs / scouts, guides, sporting clubs).
Application forms are available from the School Office, or from Post
Shops.

If you already have a valid WWCC, please let us know.
Some of you will not need one due to processes you have already

Can you help?!
We are in need of more volunteers to help us with the School Banking program. This involves processing the bank deposits for our students and only takes a little over an hour about once a month. All training provided with free tea or coffee!
Our Tuckshop is off and running for another year with our small team of dedicated volunteers, but there is still room for more to join in the fun! If you could spare a couple of hours on a Friday, even just once per term, we would love to hear from you.

On the 8th of March, the Year 7’s and 8’s competed in the SEISS Volleyball tournament. Feeling a little stretched after only coming home from camp the day before, the students put in a fantastic effort and really came together as they moved from game to game with mixed results. The Year 7 Boys played very well as was the case with our Year 8 Girls teams. Our Year 8 Boys also put in a valiant effort with one of our Year 8 Boys teams making it to the finals! Both Year 7 Girls teams played well and our Year 7 Girls Gold team made it to the Finals round and won , 30-12!
Overall, the students
enjoyed the day and,
although feeling
weary towards the
end, agreed that it
was a great end to
an awesome week!

On Thursday 21st February the year 9 and 10 students competed in the SEISS Volleyball competition. It was an action packed day with all teams giving it their best. The students sweated it out in the heat, while they continuously encouraged their teammates and peers. We were stoked to have one of the

The VCE basketball was an action packed day. It was great to compete against some fierce competition and enjoy the opportunity to see teams work together. Our most successful team for results for the day was our girls basketball team. We had a good mix of skill (Belinda) and effort (Shae) in the team enabling the team to put some wins on the board. It was a great day.

Wednesday 14th of March (3.14) was Pi day. We ate and we celebrated. Events of the day included some very rhythmic recitals of the decimal value of Pi (3.142592654 just to name a few). There were also some amazing sentences produced to help students remember the numerical equivalents for Pi. We ate meat and vegetable pie, and had some delicious apple, custard and peach pies (special thanks to Tim’s Homemade Pies and Cakes in Monbulk for their support). This day is also significant to celebrate Albert Einstein’s birthday. It was so lovely to see such enthusiasm in our Secondary students for Mathematics. A big thank you to all our volunteers and well done to all our recital participants; keep practising for next year!

On Wormsday (that's a special type of Wednesday) the Yr 1 & 2 classes built two worm farms! We put in shredded newspaper, soil and lots and lots of worms. We put in some special mats and water to keep the worms moist. We put the lids on to protect our worms. Soon we will be collecting scraps to feed our worms. We hope we get lots of'worm juice' to help our vegetable gardens. The prep class made a worm farm too, so now we have more than 3000 worms!

God must have put much thought into the design of Wilsons Promontory. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world with its mountainous thick green vegetation, turquoise waters and white beaches. It was a fitting locating for the Year 7 & 8 students to continue their current study on the unit in general studies titled "Our Magnificent Earth". Students did a number of hikes and explored a variety of locations, some carrying everything they required for the three days they hiked for. Skills were developed, resilience built, memories created, relationships were made stronger, an Awesome God was experienced and an amazing time was had entrenched in the beautiful surroundings.
