Scheduling Updates

Campus MinistryFrom the Chaplain, Deacon Frank Sullivan

Occasionally, I pass on an article from my Protecting God's Children continuing education that I feel can benefit our parents, students, faculty and alums. The following article addresses a topic that is most important to be aware of.

When Someone Thinks The Rules Do Not ApplyBy Paul Ashton, Psy.D., D.Min.

Learning to spot narcissists and deal with their destructive behavior can save you the world of hurt that awaits anyone who mistakes the near enemy for a friend.—Martha Beck

Over and over again we have people breaking the rules. They think, for whatever reason that the rules do not apply to them. They are special people who deserve extra special treatment. As you know from the warning signs listed in our program, we promote paying careful attention to the behavior of adults who work with children and their behaviors, and through this army of observers whom we have educated all over the country, we have a million sets of eyes. One of the more prominent things we train caring adults to watch for is when others "think the rules do not apply to them."

Page 5: The Herald - Bishop Hartley High School · Wrigley Field Rooftop Bleachers and Dining Package for 2 Just pick the game and everything else will be arranged! Your rooftop admission

Campus Ministry Continued...The individuals, who break these rules when they are working with or around children in our churches and schools, put children at risk and put themselves in danger. They don't listen to our reasonable requests that they should never be alone with children, and they find millions of reasons to justify breaking the rules. They state that they do so much in our churches that they should be trusted: they are members of the pastoral council or various groups in our parishes; they volunteer countless hours, etc., etc. And the list goes on and on as to why they want, need, deserve and demand an exception. After all, they are helping children. As a facilitator, when I train participants many spend lots of time trying to convince me that I need to excuse them from some particular rule. I never excuse anyone from a rule that applies to everyone, nor will I ever. Nor should you ever. It might be helpful to look at some of the characteristics of narcissism. Not that everyone who breaks rules is a narcissist, but in my experience, many of those who harm and abuse are narcissistic. Be mindful not to diagnose anyone, but watch behaviors and keep a keen eye out for them on your paths.Narcissism is an enduring pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following charac-teristics:• Lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others• Has a grandiose sense of self-importance, i.e. exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements• Has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compli-ance with his or her expectations• Is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends• Is often envious of others, or believes others are envious of him or her• Requires excessive admiration• Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes• Believes that he or she is "special" and unique, and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)• Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love1

As you can see, it is a pretty powerful list of characteristics, and not ones that are easy to live with. What is important to note is the most outstanding characteristic of a narcissist is that they are incapable of having true empathy for anyone. This is often hard for us to understand as we can readily access empathy for others. They simply cannot access it, and they are clever at mimicking it when necessary mostly to fit in and to gain something from another person.

Narcissists need a supply of persons to admire them and they'll do anything to obtain that audience. They are ruthless in getting their own way, both it is often disguised in manipulative, "kind" ways almost always abusing the power they take from their positions of real or imagined authority. If they do have positions of authority in a church, school or institution, then be most careful as they will do anything within that power to obtain what they want.

This is why we teach that the warning sign of "thinking the rules do not apply" is an important warning behavior to watch for. While we are not to go into the details of what narcissism is with those we are training in our role of facilitators, it is good to know a little bit more about the bigger picture. Be mindful, too, that individuals can exhibit narcissistic traits, and not have full blow narcissistic personality disorder. Sometimes these charming individuals are elected to high positions because their characters seem to be golden, brave and powerful and attract others who are ready to please and follow.
