A Cosmopolitan Environment withWorld-Class Facilities and TechnologyAmerica’s graduates are entering a world that is increasingly interconnected, and the Davenport Community Schools experience offers a unique foundation for global understanding.

• There are twenty-four languages and sixty-four dialects spoken in the homes of our families, and the cosmopolitan environment found in our schools mirrors that of the larger world.

• We offer a stellar World Languages curriculum that features up to 6 years of German and up to 7 years of French and Spanish, as well as Classical Language instruction that introduces Latin and Greek.

• Students take part in a variety of experiential learning excursions. Theatre students recently received a personalized performance workshop with the cast of “Wicked” on Broadway. During a recent trip to Chicago’s Christkindlmarket, students spoke German with vendors and enjoyed authentic German cuisine.

• Our learning environment also features world-class facilities and technology. We’ve invested over $135 million in recent facilities improvements for our schools, ensuring they are safe, accessible, and ideally suited to support student learning in the 21st century.

• Every high school math, science, and social studies classroom in the district has interactive projection systems. In 2013, high school classrooms were equipped with over 400 Chromebooks as a pilot program. Well over 1000 more will roll out in 2014.

See yourself in their shoes. A District of Distinction

With high expectations, first-rate teachers, and world-class facilities and technology, Davenport Community Schools ensures that all students have the tools and character needed to shape the world in a positive way. Our graduates have been Pulitzer Prize winning writers, champion athletes, political figures, and CEOs of multi-national corporations.

In 2013, our National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards medalist and National High School Honor Choir member were selected to be honored at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Each year a stunning 400-member student choir and 200-member student orchestra perform selections from Handel’s “Messiah” at our Annual Holiday Concert. Kimberly Center High School is a true alternative learning environmentwhere everyone recognizes that we are all individuals, and as such, learn in different ways. The culture and climate at our school is one of trust, respect and high academic and behavioral expectations. Students who wish to attend school at the Kimberly Center fill out an application and are interviewed by the school Principal and counselors.

Kimberly Center offers smaller class sizes than the other three high schools in the district, and college & career exploration is a major component of the culture at our school. There are many job shadow and college visit opportunities, and a wide variety of student supports such as financial aid workshops, ACT preparation classes, and resume writing sessions.

To give students control of their own learning, all students meet once a week for 30 minute advisory groups with their teacher-as-advocate. These sessions are often spent focusing on test preparation, keepingupdated on credit progress, and engaging in fun team-building exercises. Another feature unique to Kimberly Center is our APEX On-Line Learning program, available throughout the day for student credit recovery and/or credit accrual.

A recent initiative at Kimberly Center brought together students, teachers, and administrators to collaboratively work on fresh, unique course offerings that were “outside the box” but still in line with Common Core standards. The efforts resulted in a new group of “Dream Classes” for our students, such as CSI Forensic Science, Anime Art & Japanese Culture, and Holocaust Literature.

Kimberly Center High School... A School of Choice!

Central High School is an outstanding four-year high school with a rich background of traditions and a reputation for academic excellence that stems back to 1907. This heritage is rooted in the classical study of languages, sciences, and the arts, time honored traditions that are now intertwined with the latest technology.

In addition to offering over 200 courses, Central gives students many opportunities for involvement through a variety of clubs, teams, and activities. Whether participating in athletics, joining our award-winning marching band, or getting involved in a student club, there is something for everyone at Central.

Our fine arts programs are among the best in the region. We have a history of excelling at area art, music, and theatre competitions, and the opportunities available to students are unparalleled. Our high school has won more State Championships than any other school in the State of Iowa, including 13 boys outdoor track & field state titles, 11 baseball titles, and 9 basketball titles. Since the inception of our ProStart culinary arts curriculum in 2003, our culinary or management competition teams have won state and went on to compete at the national level 10 times. Central’s culinary arts teacher is a recent ProStart Teacher of the Year for the state of Iowa.

Another hallmark at Central is the Talented And Gifted (TAG) program. In 2013, both our Varsity and Freshmen Scholastic/Quiz Bowl Teams earned First Place in the state of Iowa in Knowledge Master Open competition. TAG students also lead our Environmental Club, and in 2013, we won the State of Iowa Recycle Bowl for Keep America Beautiful, recycling more than any other school in Iowa.

If you ask students, faculty and parents of Central High, it is the pride of place, spirit of engagement, and culture of support in the school that sets it apart. Central High… we challenge and encourage all students to reach their highest potential!

West High is a comprehensive school with a broad range of opportunities for all students, including diverse academic, athletic, arts, and activity experiences. We are a 21st Century skill-focused school with goal of preparing students for college and career. We offer concurrent enrollment courses where students can earn college credit while taking classes in financial accounting, medical terminology, French, Spanish, environmental science, and many other subjects.

West students engage in volunteer projects and service learning opportunities through our Business Academy, Athletic Boosters, Student Senate, National Honor Society, and other student groups. The leadership experience gained in these settings has propelled seven West students to being selected as Iowa legislative pages over the last five years. Additionally, the West High Forensics & Debate teams have advanced to Nationals on a regular basis.

West High’s most recent and exciting endeavor is the launch of the Career Institute for Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship, or CITIE. With this program, we pursue the latest in 21st Century initiatives to provide advanced experiences as students prepare for future career success. Students can get involved in our nationally and globally recognized engineering and robotics program, our award-winning welding program, and our state honored Business Academy, including the opportunity to work in the only student-run credit union in Iowa. Other CITIE academies will be in education and teaching, advanced manufacturing, medical & health science with CNA certification, and computer science. Programs in hospitality and hotel management, wellness and athletic training, and broadcast media and communications are under consideration or development.

West is a diverse environment for learning and finding direction for career pathways for all students. Students at West High have 21st Century real-world experiences that are innovative, imaginative, and inventive. In a word… INCREDIBLE!

Welcome to North High School, the best kept secret in Davenport! North High offers an outstanding academic opportunity because it is the only high school in Scott County (and one of only three in Iowa in 2013-14) where students can earn both a traditional high school diploma and an associate’s degree in liberal arts. This dual graduation program is a partnership with Scott Community College, allowing students to take college-level classes beginning in their freshman year and giving students the opportunity to move forward at a quicker pace. There is no cost for students to participate in this program, so families can save money on a college education.

The mission of North High is to embrace and challenge a diverse community of students who will become life-long learners with high expectations in a safe and positive environment. Our innovative, dedicated staff hold high academic standards for our student body. All academic and vocational career courses provide students with the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-changing environment. Our extra- and co-curricular activities allow students the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and socially. Students can participate in a host of experiences, including our award-winning Marine Corps JROTC, visual and performing arts programs, multiple academic clubs, and athletic programs.

In 2013, several major construction projects were finished at North High, including a new large-group music room and new tennis courts. Vast improvements to existing spaces were also made during this time, including upgrades to family and consumer science classrooms, music classrooms, and our library.

At North, we are proud of our top notch facilities, our dedicated staff, and our community support!
