Letter from the PresidentDear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends of Catholic High,

Greetings from The Catholic High School of Baltimore! Regardless of your affi liation with Catholic High, I am confi dent that you will be impressed, as always, with the great news of our alumnae, students, and recent graduates.

Our Mission Statement boasts of our commitment to challenge our school community to academic excellence, to responsible leadership, and to Christian community service. As you read the exciting pages of The Highlighter, you will see that the words of our mission statement continue to be vibrantly alive at Catholic High and among our alumnae.

The end of another year brought many highlights to our school community, several of which are included in this edition. Just a sample … On May 25th, Catholic High’s 68th graduating class received diplomas at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, while members of the 50th anniversary class, the Class of 1960, were honored. Prior to graduation, we were busy celebrating with our students, staff, and alumnae in a variety of ways, including our yearly May Procession, Employee Recognition Liturgy, National Honor Society induction, Athletic Awards dinner, and traditional Senior Farewell Assembly.

I am certain that as you read this edition of The Highlighter, you will again notice the many ways Catholic High continues to touch the lives of our alumnae. Regardless of your year of graduation or where you live, Catholic High’s grateful daughters enjoy being connected to their alma mater. We are most fortunate as a school community to make this claim, and I thank our 12,000 graduates for your consistent support and advocacy of Catholic High.

My prayer is that you continue to be blessed for the many gifts you give back to our school, and that you let your light shine each day in refl ection of your years of life and learning at Catholic High.

2 The Catholic High School of Baltimore

Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends of Catholic High,

Welcome to the Summer 2010 edition of The Highlighter. In these pages, I hope you will fi nd items of interest and perhaps an opportunity to reunite with old friends.

The Offi ce of Institutional Advancement at The Catholic High School of Baltimore is responsible for building long-term relationships between Catholic High and its various constituencies in order to stimulate greater understanding and fi nancial support.

The primary function of our offi ce is to assist in the cultivation of donors. As the fi nancial demands on our school have grown more complex, Catholic High’s future strength rests in large part on the solid fi nancial foundation provided by its alumnae, parents, past parents, friends and foundation grants.

The IA offi ce also promotes leadership and involvement among individuals who support the mission and goals of Catholic High and are willing to volunteer to advance the school. We applaud all of our volunteers – alumnae, parents and friends – for your efforts. There are many opportunities to serve our beloved school and I encourage you to contact Kim Becker ’02, Coordinator of Alumnae Relations and Special Events, on ext. 248 if you wish to donate a gift of time and talent.

May God continue to bless you and your loved ones.

Most sincerely,

Marcy Shea-Frank ’63Director of Institutional Advancement

Thank You to All Who Made Spring Fling 2010 a Success!

Catholic High Students Strive for GoldSubmitted by: Nicole Massoni ’05

The Highlighter Summer 2010 3

Liz Kempske ’11, Katie Hundertmark ’11, and Shelby Kestler ’12 have two things in common: they are students at The Catholic High School of Baltimore and worked for the Gold Award in Girl Scouts. Liz is the fi rst to achieve the Gold Award, but the other two are not far behind. The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout in the 14-18 age range may receive. The award represents Liz’s commitment to herself as well as to her community as she focuses on leadership, career exploration, personal challenges, and the completion of a lasting project that will benefi t her and her community. In order to accomplish this award, Liz spent approximately 345 hours over a two-year span, organizing, networking, and executing her project, “Maryland’s Hidden Treasures.” It is housed at the Highland School and was constructed for the fourth and fi fth grades. The project is a keepsake of every county in Maryland and includes a “treasure box” for each county and Baltimore City, containing its seal and other pertinent information such as the county sport, bird, or pastime.

Katie is currently completing her Gold Award project. She is a member of Troop 1405 at Saint Clement Mary Hofbauer in Rosedale. As the fi nal product of her project, Katie and about 20 volunteers planted a serenity garden behind McCafferty Hall at Catholic High. “It came out better than I thought it would,” Katie said. The project was a learning experience, teaching Katie about plants and the signifi cance some plants have on nature and in the Bible. “Rose bushes signify Jesus’ crown of thorns,” Katie said.

Katie’s main goal throughout this project was to give back to Catholic High. “This garden is my lasting gift to Catholic High,” she said. “I am glad I completed it my junior year so that I can enjoy it for a while. It is my special spot.” Katie checks on her garden every day after school to make sure that it receives proper care and maintenance.

Before Katie could begin executing her project, she submitted a proposal to her troop leader, along with a projected plan, timeline, and list of volunteers. In addition to ensuring every detail was in place, Katie met with Dr. Barbara Nazelrod ’68, President of Catholic High, to make sure her idea would be acceptable to the school. The serenity garden is an extension of the “Green Garden” that was planted last year as part of the school’s Green School effort. “I wanted to add to and improve the original garden by adding a serene feel to it.” Katie gathered 20 volunteers of family, friends, teachers from Catholic High, and three of her classmates: Shanese Colemann ’11 Tiffany Aranow ’11, and Christina Jackson ’11. Katie and her volunteers worked on the garden from Saturday, May 15 to Sunday, May 16, for a total of

18 hours. They planned and prepped the area on Saturday by weeding and tilling, and on Sunday they planted and landscaped. “I was supervisor, instructor, and worker,” she said. “I got a taste of everything. I was in charge of the project but also a part of the labor.”

After completing the serenity garden, Katie started gathering before and after pictures for her fi nal submission. Katie hopes to receive the Gold Award next April, as there is only one awards ceremony a year. In addition to the serenity garden, Katie has also met with teacher, Mrs. Concetta Lovejoy, to form a sustainability committee at Catholic High that will bond with the F.O.C.U.S. (Fellowship of Christians United in Service) club. Members are responsible for collecting recycling and arranging liturgies. Katie will be working with Shelby Kestler on this committee. “Shelby will follow me and learn everything she needs

Page 6: The Highlighter Summer 2010

to know so that when I graduate she can take over the committee.” Katie would also like to give a presentation during this school year about what being a green school really means. “We need to raise awareness and get people involved,” she said. “Catholic High has given me a lot. It turned my future around and I want to show my appreciation by giving back.”

Shelby was awarded the Marian Medal in Girl Scouts. The Marian Medal actively involves Catholic women as participants in an understanding of Mary as the model of openness and spirituality - to be a woman of the church. To be eligible to receive this award, Shelby had to complete a religious activity workbook and give service to her church, St. Michael the Archangel in Overlea. She brought volunteers into her church and worked with the Pregnancy Center. Her project took three months to complete, and after receiving the award, she started planning for her next project. “I learned a lot about how to live like Mary and how to be a true woman of the church,” Shelby said.

For her next project, the Gold Award, Shelby will increase youth involvement in her parish. She is very passionate about this project and said, “I knew what I wanted to do before I submitted the project.” She is focused on service, fellowship, and youth involvement. She and her volunteers created a mural at St. Michael’s and will encourage other teenagers to become active members of the church by becoming Eucharistic ministers, lectors, ushers, etc. This project has many components and Shelby is working extremely hard to accomplish every task. In order to receive the award, Shelby must submit the completed project by the time she turns 18. Although she has a lot of work ahead of her, she is determined and willing to do everything she can to involve her peers and get them to actively participate in church. So far, Shelby has learned leadership roles, organizational skills, independence, and most importantly, responsibility. “I can handle it. Some people would just do a mural or get people involved. I want to do it all because there is a need in my parish for youth involvement.”

Liz, Shelby and Katie worked and are continuing to work very hard towards the Gold Award and the betterment of the community. The service they exhibited proves they are responsible leaders among the community, serving as role models for their peers. Catholic High is very proud to have students “let their light shine” for others to see and really make a difference.

Miss Catholic High Crowns Mary at May ProcessionOn May 14 Catholic High celebrated its annual May Procession with a traditional prayer service and crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Miss Catholic High, Krystal Washington ’10, proudly crowned Mary with her fellow students of the year by her side.

After an incredible fi rst season, Catholic High’s Varsity Gold Team defended their championship status, winning the IAAM “B” conference for the second consecutive year. The team, led again by Mr. Paul DeJuliis as Head Coach, father of Gabriella DeJuliis ’11, defeated Mt. DeSales by three strokes (186 to 189) to claim victory. The team practiced four days a week – two days at Sparrows Point Country Club and two days at Catholic High or the driving range. They competed in fi ve tournaments and ended their season by winning the IAAM “B” Championship on Tuesday, May 4.

“I am very proud of the coaches and team for another outstanding season,” said Mrs. Kari McBride, Athletic Director. “They overcame a 10-shot defi cit heading into the second day of the tournament to capture our second championship. Special congratulations to sophomore Anna Casterline for being named an IAAM All-Star.”

“We were down by 10 strokes after the fi rst day of the championship, but on day two the girls, as a team, stormed back to win by three strokes,” said coach Paul DeJuliis. “Anna Casterline led the way with an amazing score of 44. I still did not believe we won until a fellow coach congratulated me, and I was absolutely speechless! Winning two consecutive years has never been done before in B Conference play. Four of our six starters are returning next year, and prospects for another great season in 2011 are high!”

CHARLIE’S PLACE

6 The Catholic High School of Baltimore

School Store Gets a Face LiftThis past spring Catholic High was the recipient of a generous gift from a private donor to renovate the school store. After months of planning and organizing, Charlie’s Place was re-opened. In purple and green and with new merchandise, Charlie’s Place exhibits the modern feel of a boutique, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere of Catholic High.

“All of us at Catholic High are pleased about Charlie’s Place,” said Dr. Barbara D. Nazelrod ’68, President. “It gives us the opportunity to showcase Catholic High apparel and school spirit items in a beautiful setting. We thank, once again, Mr. Charlie Zeiler, donor, for his continued philanthropy to Catholic High.”
