In March 2017 Dame Vera Lynn turned 100 years old. To this day, the world remains familiar with her warm and beautiful voice. A voice, that some say, helped win a war. A few years ago she was Number One on the hit parade in England, with a re-release of her wartime album “Hits of the Blitz” Not many 97 year olds can boast that achievement! Songs such as ‘We’ll Meet Again’, ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’, ‘ I’ll be Seeing You, ‘Lili Marlene’, ‘We’ll Gather Lilacs’, ‘London Pride’ and, of course, ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square’ are just a few of the many familiar and favourite songs featured in this tribute to a British National Treasure. Starring Lisa Bobbert and featuring Anthony

Stonier, with Evan Roberts (Musical Direction) and on piano. Take a nostalgic trip down an English country lane and remember the songs and stories that won the war. What the reviews said...“Sophisticated and elegant...” “Enchanting performances by consummate artists in a well-researched, well-constructed and most entertaining production.”

For a classical piano recital at this year’s festival, and in Music Revivals 20th year, Steinway pianist, Christopher Duigan, plays an exhilarating programme of his favourite classical piano masterpieces. These uplifting and boldly positive compositions have formed a major part of his repertoire in numerous performances over the past 20 years under the banner of Music Revival . Music Revival, established in October 1997, has grown from a series of small intimate concerts to an illustrious and highly regarded series of more than 100 concerts annually presented across SA, from home soirees to major festivals and symphony concerts. Principal works in Duigan’s performance include George Frederic Handel’s Chaconne in G HWV 435 and Ludwig van Beethoven’s exhilarating “Waldstein” Sonata op 53. Following their highly acclaimed, sold-out performances at the eighth Wakkerstroom Music Festival in Mpumalanga earlier this year, classically trained pianists, Carin van Graan and Chanie Jonker, bring their pro-gramme of Johannes Brahms’s (1833-1897) beautiful Waltzes and Hungarian Dances – original compositions for one piano, four hands – to the Hilton Arts Festival audience. Brahms referred to the 16 Waltzes as “inno-cent little Waltzes in the style of Schubert”; they are mostly in a Viennese or Austrian vein, but some have a slightly more Hungar-ian feel. The Hungarian Dances are based on gypsy themes and are among Brahms’ most popular works. The concert will consist of the complete set of Waltzes, Op. 39, as well as the following Hungarian Dances: numbers 1 (G minor), 2 (D minor), 3 (F major), 4 (F minor), 7 (A major), 17 (F-sharp minor), 19 (B minor), 5 (F-sharp minor) and 6 (D-flat major).

The SA version of this Tony Award winning mega hit recently played to rave reviews and sold out houses in Cape Town. Brilliantly innovative, heart breaking, and wickedly funny, it is a landmark musical that is ground breaking and undoubtedly ahead of its time. This musical sensation, with its pulsing score and electrifying performances, tells the story of one of the most unique characters ever to hit the stage. The music is steeped in the androgynous 1970’s glam rock style of David Bowie as well as the work of John Lennon and Iggy Pop. The plot revolves around a stage musical about a fictional rock band fronted by an East German transgender singer who survives a botched sex change operation performed to allow her to marry an American man and escape East Germany, only to get dumped a few months later. Hedwig subsequently develops a relationship with a younger man, Tommy, becoming his mentor and musical collaborator. Tommy steals her music and moves on without her. The musical follows

Hedwig and her roadie as they shadow Tommy’s tour, while exploring Hedwig’s past and complex gender identity. Starring Paul du Toit and Genna Galloway who both won Fleur du Cap awards for their performances, it is directed by Elizma Badenhorst

Leading South African concert pianist Andrew Warburton is joined by eminent members of the KZNPO, Violeta and Sorin Osorhean, in a trio of thrilling works from the solo and chamber repertoire. Andrew opens the concert with the set of 6 Bagatelles Op.126 for piano, by Beethoven. Originally a ‘bagatelle” was a short character piece for piano based on folkloristic roots. He paints a far richer canvas in these pieces, although in the faster movements one can still discern traces of the harvest dance! Andrew will then be joined by Violeta for Beethoven’s much loved “Spring” sonata for Violin and Piano, Op.24. Brahms’ Trio for Piano, Violin and Horn Op. 40 was written later in the century, and is one of very few works for this combination of instruments. Brilliant writing for these instruments is contrasted vividly by the pathos of the slow movement. The breathtaking finale uses the traditional hunting horn call as its primary theme. Both Violeta and Sorin grew up in Romania. They relocated to Durban in 2005 to

take up leading positions in the KZNPO. Andrew has played concertos with every South African orchestra since 1982. He lectures piano, and heads Western Classical Performance Studies at UKZN.

In this 2016 Standard Bank Ovation award winning production, 27 characters come to life through two actors in a flavourful story of an Indian family in transition from apartheid into democracy. Out of Bounds let’s rip the diminutive voice of Indians in South Africa, a voice often overlooked, lying somewhere in between black and white. The play not only explores this space in between but resonates with families from all backgrounds, cultures and races. With added extra spice, sugar cane and raw humour that punches you right in the guts- Lall, the main character takes us on a journey as he dares to travel on the spice route of self-discovery. “So OUT OF BOUNDS is the pieces of spice in a bowl of curry; the cloves, the bay leaf the cinnamon; my mother calls them “speed traps” because they interrupt you when you’re eating. But I think that just like those little moments in life that may feel aggravating, such as the moments

Lall looks back on in the play, they’re really there to stop you on your journey and remind you what made it so delicious in the first place.” – Tazme Pillay. Written by Rajesh Gopie, directed by Crizelle Anthony and featuring Tazme Pillay & Tailyn Ramsamy.

From the creators of “The Snow Goose” …. It is a seemingly simple story: Santiago is an old, experienced fisherman who hasn’t brought in a catch for months. On the 85th day of this dry spell, he heads far out into the Gulf of Mexico where he hooks a giant marlin. Unable to pull the fish into his skiff, he holds onto the line for three days before killing it with a harpoon. After lashing the fish to his boat, Santiago heads home with his hard-won prize. But along the way, sharks reduce the fish to bones, and the old man returns to port as he left–empty-handed. This is a tale with a relevance that transcends time and place: the universal truths of a man’s existence within this world, where pride, respect, tenacity, and dreams fuel a man in his quest to thrive in the face of struggle; a story about the indomitable spirit of man. Come and see it! Featuring James Cairns, Taryn Bennett &

Jaques de Silva, it is directed by Jenine Collocott and adapted from the Hemingway classic by Nic Warren and produced by Contagious Theatre.

Gambling with the Devil is such a bad, bad idea. But Billy Markham - he’s been on the scene for years, he’s been cut and bled a thousand times, and his eyes are wise and sad. Hell, he ain’t afraid to roll them devilish dice. “If you’re lookin’ for some action, friend, well, I’ve rolled them dice before.” Sarah Roberson of The Critter says “James Cairns is the rough-n-tough hustlin’ Billy Markham. And the playful, charm-ing devil. And our lisping narrator. And the shaky, slimy, agent-to-the-hustlers, Scuzzy Slezzo. Oh, and god, who plays an impressive game of pool. Cairns has mastered the one-man storytell-ing show; he’s a master manipulator of his voice, face and body in creating a handful of distinctive characters who pull us along for the ride (this time via hell, and heaven too).” Better the devil

Lara Foot directs a stellar cast of Jennifer Steyn, Andrew Buckland and Mncedisi Shabangu. Earlier this year the play, which has enjoyed many a full house, received the coveted Fleur du Cap awards for Best Director (Foot), Best Actor (Buckland) and Best Actress (Steyn). Set in a landscape of memory and dreams, it tackles the issues of friendship, dysfunction, addiction and angels. Sara (Steyn) has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder; she is compulsive, alive and hates women who know how to make cupcakes. Paul (Buckland), her husband, is on a mission to find a cure for her afflictions and Professor James (Shabangu) quietly tries to save Paul’s sanity. The play is, at its heart, a love story, which makes for compelling viewing with burning contemporary themes such as bi-polar disorder and compulsion and their devastating effect on families. It cuts close to the bone for anyone who has suffered mental illness themselves, or has lived with an afflicted person. The media have raved about the production. Maytham ( Cape Talk): “If there is a better piece of theatre

… please lead me to it … no serious theatre lover should miss … It’s that good.” Kretzmann (Critter): “… masterful direction … an engrossing, consummate performance… ”

Milton van Der Spuy has a few problems - and they’re making him blue. He really wants to complete his next poem, but he’s hit a block with finding a rhyme for orange. He’s desperate to finish his current painting, except he can’t find a way to begin. And then there’s the constant danger that his head might explode… Named after the poet, Milton is an artist whose talents lie, um… elsewhere. Playwright Greig Coetzee’s most simple, and yet most complex character is brought to life by award-winning actor, Francis Mennigke, directed by Peter Mitchell. Milton’s not so intellectual brain has been filled with fantasies of being a great artist by his mother, a pathetic woman who tries to live vicariously through her son’s meagre talents. Coetzee’s extraordinary talent for comedy and pathos brings us a character who is at once appealing and laughable, but draws us closer and closer to tragedy. Despite his

unique, ‘differently abled’ mind, everyone can relate to this small man with huge dreams as he struggles to fly above his own mediocre life. You will laugh, you will cry, you will never see the Mona Lisa the same way again…

Rob Caskie creates a story before your very eyes! This young country of ours has a fascinating and complex history. This story deals with early inhabitants and the arrival of the Nguni people. One of them became the military genius, Shaka, with major implications. Religious persecution and poor standards of living resulted in a miscellany of Europeans arriving in the Cape after 1652. British rule, taxation and slavery eventually led to the Great Trek. Some emphasis will be given to the development of the mighty Zulu nation, particularly appropriate in Natal’s history. Along with the discovery of diamonds and gold, all this creates a kaleidoscope of characters and intrigue worth sharing. As always Rob shares these stories from a human perspective and the

character sketches are beguiling.

Have you ever thought of writing your family’s story, or at least pulling together the facts? Award-winning novelist and former editor of The Witness, John Conyngham, will talk about why and how he wrote his family memoir, Hazara: Elegy for an African Farm, and will provide advice on how you could do the same. In his talk, Conyngham will use historic photographs from his book to bring back to life a world that has largely slipped into the past. Hazara is the name of a sugar farm, formerly owned by Conyngham’s family and named after his grandfather’s regiment in the British Indian Army. In the tradition of memoirs such as Blixen’s Out of Africa, Hazara is a multi-layered tapestry of An-glo-South African life. It is centred on a family and its farm, with its homestead in a park-like garden among sugar-cane fields, with a distant view of the Indian Ocean. It is about sons fighting in wars and daughters nursing in military hospitals. It is about

tennis parties, and drinks on the veran-da. It is about people who love Africa but know that they don’t fully belong.

Mazisi Kunene; talk by Mathabo Kunene. Mazisi Kunene is the much-celebrated author of epics, such as Emperor Shaka the Great (UNodumehlezi KaMenzi) and Anthem of the Decades (Inhlokomo Yeminyaka), as well as numerous poems, short stories, nursery rhymes and proverbs that amount to a collection of more than 10 000 works. He went into exile in the 1960s for more than 34 years, during which time he established and managed the African National Congress office in London and later moved to Los Angeles with his family to pursue his academic career. In UNodumehlezi KaMenzi (Emperor Shaka the Great), which he wrote during this exile period, he positions Shaka as a legendary thinker, who had great skill as a strategic and military genius. This vision acknowledges and re-imagines Shaka as a unifying cultural and political force that defined the cohesive Zulu nation. Kunene projects Shaka into the mythical ancestral universe that affirms the deep cultural lineage of the African world view. This reprinted English edition is published

with the isiZulu edition on the tenth anniversary of his death, embracing Kunene’s original dream to have his work published as intended in the original isiZulu form.

By Juliette Leeb-Du Toit. The cross-cultural usage of a particular cloth type – blueprint – is central to South African cultural history. Known locally as seshoeshoe or isishweshwe, among many other localised names, South African blueprint originated in the Far East and East Asia. Adapted and absorbed by the West, blueprint in Africa was originally associated with trade, coercion, colonisation, Westernisation, religious con-version and even slavery, but residing within its hues and patterns was a resonance that endured. The cloth came to reflect histories of hardship, courage and survival, but it also con-veyed the taste and aesthetic predilections of its users, preferences often shared across racial and cultural divides. In its indigenisation, isishwesh-we has subverted its former history and alien origins and has come to reflect the authority of its users and their culture, conveying resilience, innovation and adaptation and above all a dis-tinctive South Africanness. An art historian who has a particular interest in African and South African art, Juliette Leeb-du Toit has also had a lifelong interest in design and textiles. She is currently engaged in the recovery

of modernisms in design history, the impact of German modernism in South Africa and the impact of China on the arts in South Africa.

Richard presents three fascinating sessions to intrigue music fanatics.

The Weirdest Music I Ever Heard – In 1903, at the railway station in Tutwiler, Mississippi, musician, composer and self-styled Father of the Blues WC Handy heard a ragged stranger playing the guitar by sliding a pocket knife across its strings and singing a repetitive refrain about going “where

the Southern cross the Dog”. Though he called it “the weirdest music I ever heard”, it changed his life. Slide guitar styles, from Hawaiian to Hindustani, from lap to pedal steel, from the rudi-mentary one-string diddley bow to some of the most blistering guitar playing in captivity, have become a regular, evocative and often thrilling component of folk, blues, rock and country music and several places beyond.

For The Sake Of The Song – The seventies was the decade of the singer-songwriter and South Africa had its share of good ones. Colin Shamley, John Oakley-Smith, Edi Niederlander, Syd Kitchen, Tony Bird, Roger Lucey and several others had little exposure beyond the few hundreds they played to in the local folk clubs and at the occasional folk festivals of the time, but the songs they wrote and sang consti-tuted a vitally important, if hardly heard, body of South African music.

Alastair Meredith presents a brilliant, well-illustrated and fascinating lecture on both the context in which Pierneef painted, his life, the commissions, the travel and dispelling some of the associated labels that have been given to him. A Pierneef was recently sold for R 20 million – a new world record for his work. After completing his Bachelor of Arts (Art History and English Literature) at the University of Edinburgh, Alastair attended Cambridge University where he completed his Master’s degree. His PhD thesis, which focused on Jan Juta, has also recently been accepted at the same institution. To this end, Alistair has presented various papers on Juta and the European influence on his painting at art history symposia and conferences at Cambridge University and Columbia University. Alastair has also taught undergraduate students, focussing primarily on British painting. Since joining Strauss & Co, his professional interests have grown to include the curatorial aspect of

displaying artworks and the way this display reflects the development of South African art history. He has a keen interest in twentieth-century South African painting.

A SIGNIF-ICANT LIFE: An exhibition of photographs of Nelson Mandela NORMAND DUNN GALLERY CENTENARY CENTREWith kind permission from The Nelson Mandela Foundation, commissioned photographer to the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, photog-rapher Matthew Willman reveals in intimate detail for the first time on South African soil one of the world’s foremost photographic collec-tions on the life and times of Nelson Mandela. The exhibition details photographic works from Mandela’s birthplace, the infamous Rivonia Trial, life on Robben Island and private moments

shared with Mandela during the last 10 years of his retirement. The exhibition is a community initiative managed by the MW Arts Trust. “I want all South Africans to learn about Nelson Mandela, to experience through my images & stories what we overcame, what we achieved and the gift Mandela’s life and struggle gave to us in ensuring the protection and dignity of all human lives.” Matthew Willman

For the first time at Hilton, a new initiative has been launched allowing interested art lovers to get a ‘behind the scenes’ glimpse at what the process of creativity is all about. Watercolourist, Grant Wood and oil maestro, Tony Durrheim, will perform 3 demonstrations each. Grant will be painting boats and reflections on the Friday, a seascape on Saturday and an African street scene on Sunday showing off all the tricks which many people find daunting when they embark on applying watercolour techniques to paper. Tony will start on Friday with a stormy Karoo scene with a windmill and wet road, mainly using a painting knife. On Saturday he will tackle a seascape with waves breaking on rocks (showing wave movement) and on Sunday a back lit rocky

forest stream with reflections and submerged rocks. Should be great fun but booking is essential as space is limited.

Edited by Donna Hornby, Rosalie Kingwill, Lauren Royston and Ben Cousins. A title deed = tenure security. Or does it? The authors of a recently launched publication by UKZN Press, “Untitled: Securing Land Tenure in Urban and Rural South Africa” analyse the complexity of systems of land tenure in contemporary South Africa. The book, which is the first to look at land tenure in both rural and urban areas, explores the implications for land reform and development policies. The majority of South Africans do not gain access to land and housing through title deeds but through very different processes, which this book calls social or off-reg-ister tenure. These tenure systems are poorly understood, a gap the book attempts to ad-dress. The book reveals that ‘informal’ and cus-tomary property systems can be well organised, often providing substantial tenure security, but lack official recognition and support. This makes them difficult to service and vulnerable to elite capture. Donna Hornby currently works for the Association for Rural Advancement, a land rights NGO in Pietermaritzburg, and has post-doctoral research fellowship at the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies at the University of the Western Cape.

Campbell Exhibition CentreThe VinLee Art gallery is essentially a collector’s choice of art, carefully selected and pieced together. Each painting portrays its own uniqueness and beauty. It is a gallery created over years and it is an overspill of my own collection. VinLee initially started at Two Acres Tearoom in Assagay, from there we moved it to Hilton on the D494 road. We have in the past, exhibited during the Hilton Arts Festival season and by appointment only. We subsequently reopened at Alecia’s Atelier in

Hillcrest but are excited to once again showcase VinLee at this coming Hilton Arts Festival.Over the years, I have spent many hours getting to know the artists behind their paintings. Every one of them appears too modest about their work. They are, essentially, a channel offering a gift that changes the recipient. I am in awe of their capabilities and I am sure you will be too.

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 28Having experimented with different media over the years both Simon and Lyn favour using acrylic or oils on heavily under-painted and gessoed surfaces. The texture and depth this produces is an important aspect of their work. Their choice of surroundings is evident in their deep earthy palette and constant refinement of surface and vi-sual content. Lyrical, poetic titles draw the viewer into Lyn’s whimsical, vibrantly coloured paintings.

Often deceptively simple, sometimes fascinatingly complex, Lyn’s works embody a unique style and gentle magic, that invite considered attention from the observer. Simon vindicates his love affair with the grape in his wonderfully witty and hu-morous “Commedia del Arte” jester series. These extremely detailed, finely wrought images act as a good counterpoise to his more serious, sensitive landscapes where he captures the atmospheric subtleties of the Clarens landscape.

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL HMy style is contemporary/abstract, drawing inspira-tion from the ocean, its moods, the various life forms within it and the freedom one experiences when in or near it.

I work mainly with acrylics but have been known to embark on an oil creation. However, I find the freedom and movement of acrylics to be my preferred medium.

Different colours reflect my different moods – and this can clearly be seen in my work. As much as I like black, brown and taupe – especially in winter – my all-time favourite colour has to be white - I love the simplicity and freshness of it.

My paintings would not be what they are without it. I work from my studio on the beach front in Ballito and have clients all over South Africa as well as in New York and London.

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 24I paint a wide variety of themes. I look for the beauty in life which inspires me to put it on canvas or paper.

I try to capture a moment in time. Last year I worked mainly with watercolour, but this year I am working with different media.

I am always learning and trying new ways to express what I want to convey.

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 1“Art you can pour over”. Years of experience as a game ranger and safari guide in Africa have provided Allen with a vast knowledge from which to draw inspiration for his wildlife sculpting. For 30 years Allen has worked in his KZN Midlands studio, undertaking many field trips to inspire his creativity. His unbridled passion for African wildlife is portrayed in these treasured works, which have become world renowned collectibles. He has also undertaken several commissions throughout Southern Africa and many of his edition pieces are in private collections throughout the world. His international reputation as a wildlife artist is rapidly growing, with successful sales at Christies of London. Last year he was commissioned by the Mabula Ground Hornbill project to create a life-size Ground Hornbill to be auctioned. The project raised over of R400 000!! Through art, Allen hopes to make a meaningful contribution to preserving Africa’s wildlife.

I mainly paint with oil on canvas. I enjoy exploring all subjects but especially landscape and portraiture.

CAMPBELL EXHIBITIONMy paintings are whimsical, illustrative and fun, focusing on the good things in life. I use acrylics on stretched deep edge blocked canvas. Come and escape with me into my dream world which is reflected in my paintings. My paintings are radiant and burst with colour and joy. Their symbolism helps you connect with your inner self. Build your own bridges to your dreams and enjoy the beauty of life.

PERSPECTIVE WILD GARDEN MMI draw using Faber Castell polychromes, often finishing with oil paint. My work is realistic and I enjoy capturing fine detail. I love to draw a variety of subjects includ-ing birds, wildlife and portraits but I particularly enjoy drawing horses at work and at play.

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 23I paint in oils, having started this journey some fifty odd years ago. I would be considered an impressionist / realist and am driven more by quality light than the topic itself, so I end up painting a full range of subjects and truly don’t really have any favourites - maybe the ones that take me to the most exciting places! I enjoy

the challenge of something new: this means getting out of your comfort zone and growth. Styles evolve, I believe, but remain basically recognizably “you”, influenced by the work of those the artist admires. Thankfully for me, painting is a journey and not a destination.

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL GMy work is both colourful and bright and has a distinct “Zen “feel about it. It echoes a mixture of East and West. I am known both locally and internationally for my Koi Fish works. The Associated Koi Clubs of the USA recently featured me in their monthly magazine. I have been asked to paint for the cover of the magazine and have also been asked to produce the artwork for the posters for an

associated seminar in the USA. Recently my work was featured in The Holland/Belgium Koi magazines. Although I love painting fish I do paint other subjects as well. At the moment it is birds. I am a watercolourist and have now been doing work on canvas using acrylic inks and a lot of water for my effects. I run regular workshops in Umhlanga and particularly love teaching beginners. My passion is painting the creatures of nature.

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 8I enjoy painting a variety of subjects, in a variety of media. I’m especially inspired by landscapes,

the sea and objects appearing in both. My paintings tend to have an abstract slant and are free and colourful.

PERSPECTIVE WILD GARDEN KKMy style is free and impressionistic; my colour is monochromatic at times. My current work, a new series of paintings, is based on wild seas and yachts. I have been painting all my life, and am driven to help others through my art. I paint in honour of my daughter, to heal my soul and help other children with cancer.

PERSPECTIVE WILD GARDEN LLMy recent paintings, mostly commissioned, are shore lines and seascapes, with an impressionistic feel. They are about the movement of the elements, moods and changing light. I am fascinated by the sunlight, the wind, and the effect these elements have on the ever changing mood of my surroundings. I paint from my own photos but my paintings take on my own interpretation as I strip down to the emotion; colours become altered. Other

subjects I paint are giant palms and banana leaves against the sky, the beauty of rambling sugar cane, animal life, monkeys and birds. I work in mixed media with oils, acrylic and metallic. I work across scale, but I love a large white canvas the most. With interior and fashion diplomas and a career in decor buying for a leading retailer, interior space, styling, and where my paintings will live, is in my conscious when I paint.

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL EI believe a painting must tell a story, one that is satisfying to the creator and engaging to the viewer. I love painting Africa - its wildlife, birds and sun drenched landscape.

In recent times my art has focused increasingly on the plight of the African elephant, especially the way in which the ‘big tuskers’ of Africa have been systematically exterminated by poaching. My passion for these animals goes back to the 1970’s when I came face to face with the bull “Shawu” in the Kruger Park.

I have a graphic arts background and underlining all my work is the ability to draw well. Throughout the ages, artists have been the conscience of society. That is what I strive for in and through my art. At the end of the day, I believe my art to be an expression of my passion for life. All life.

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 27She paints mainly South African landscapes, using oil on canvas in an impressionistic style.

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL CChris paints in oil, creating scenes of landscape and wild life, capturing moments in time. He paints *in washes of colour, building up the final colour to give life to his paintings and a colour perspective which gives the painting depth and perspective. His scenes are all chosen from his photographs of his travels all over Africa and wider afield. The strongest influence in his life was growing up in, and

getting to know, the untouched wilderness of the Kalahari in Botswana. Hunting with San people as a small boy, and farming as a young man, taught him respect and love for those never ending savannah plains. Chris has exhibited successfully at Art in the Park, Artists under the Sun, Innibos, Aardklop, Norscott Manor, Jan Smuts House and Boardwalk. He has sold to people from the UK, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, USA and India.

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL KMy primary interest in wildlife had its origins in the contemplation of nature. However, my work has now moved into a more subjective emotional observation of the dire straits in which the world’s fauna has remorselessly been plunged. It is my intention to redirect the gaze of the viewer from the romantic concept of the world’s wildernesses to a current worldview where the imminent danger of a disappearing

species becomes the focus. The use of largely monochrome imagery lends a dramatic slant to the subject highlighting the form. The choice of a closely cropped image where the viewer will be drawn into a direct gaze of an animal is a deliberate choice. The image must confront and engage. The use of finely crafted images on newsprint and cardboard packing cases is to bring home the message of a commodity mad world.

Cindy BonkewitZ Cindy powellPERSPECTIVE WILD GARDEN JJThe subject matter of my artwork is diverse, varying from sprawling landscapes to elegant birds, comprising various vibrant colours, and emphasizing the vivid colours and beauty of nature. The paintings are based on birds from all over the world, involving a mixture of different colours with an emphasis on the complementary colours, thus making them a definite eye catcher. The use of natural lines and painted texturized patterns give the artwork a sense of impressionism and/or realism. The focus on the artworks is usually the light source that defines the painting. I try to create a different perspective on the subject matter, and to capture an atmosphere as well. The media I make use of are predominantly acrylic on canvas and oil on canvas.

PERSPECTIVE WILD GARDEN III paint mainly in oils, but also often incorporate mixed media into my work. My subject matter can be quite varied, from people to landscapes, wildlife to Nguni cattle. I live and work in Rosetta, and I am positively influenced by the beauty which surrounds me. My paintings have often been described as bold and dramatic.

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 9David works in pastels with bush veld, wildlife and cattle as his preferred subject matter.

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL MI portray wildlife in its natural habitat using pas-tel, oils and acrylics. My aim is to make people aware of our heritage of wildlife and wild places, much of which has disappeared in my lifetime.

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 22I paint in acrylics and oils and my subjects include wildlife, birds, landscapes, seascapes and pet portraits.

Through my paintings I try to share my love of nature and bring awareness of the beautiful wildlife we are so blessed to share this earth with. I attempt to portray my subjects as accurately and real to life as possible.

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL I Des Freeman and Andrew Mather are landscape and seascape artists

ed Shroeder “FoCuS on the eye”

Florian JunGe

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 18 In portrait photography it is essential to focus on the eye. If the eye is out of focus the photograph will not work. Equally important is that the eye reflects good light. I have tried to combine these two aspects of portrait photography. I have also tried to focus on the display as a whole, and not just on individual pieces, thereby creating an overall aesthetically pleasing presentation. This year I have chosen

wildlife as my subject and not Nguni cattle. Wildlife photography is very popular and possibly over-done, hence I have tried to convert my wildlife photographs into pieces of art, by focusing on the eye and creating a black background to accentuate the soft light on the subject. Whilst the frame should never dominate the picture, it is very important in this instance to frame the photograph correctly to bring out its potential.

CAMPBELL EXHIBITIONI sculpt using welded reclaimed scrap steel. My inspiration is the natural world.

FouChe StudioS (leon & inGrid)

Gail SChaeFer

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 15 Ingrid and Leon Fouche are two of South Africa’s most established and sought after wildlife artists. Working in soft pastels, acrylics and oils, they specialise in African wildlife and

Nguni cattle. The realism that is achieved places their paintings in great demand. Leon’s success in America is well established, and his work can be found in many private and corporate collections around the globe.

PERSPECTIVE WILD GARDEN BB Born and raised in Kenya, with “safari” as my holiday style, my interests take on an African context, especially East Africa and its Arab influenced coastline. I am primarily interested in portrait painting with a particular bent on domestic animals. Chickens and cows have their

own special character that I cannot resist. I have a large pack of dogs and adore painting dog portraits on commission. I also enjoy exploring botanical subjects. I have been living in South Africa half of my life now, and the Pennington coast where I raised my children, and the Natal Midlands where my family also farm, now influence my work.

Gareth roBertS

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 20 I am a photographer who looks to tell a story beyond an image and create art from what I see around me. I observe from a more natural

abstract perspective, often looking for patterns, contrasts and colours in the finer detail of landscapes.

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL J Deirdre Schoultz is an artist who works in many media including ink, pencil and paint; her work is eclectic in nature. Johanni Ackermann is a portrait and still life artist.

PERSPECTIVE WILD GARDEN NNHelen Fleetwood is a self-taught artist who has painted from an early age. She enjoys painting wildlife in a variety of media: oil, acrylic and pen and wash. Helen spends as much time as possible in the bush, taking photos. She enjoys painting her own photos, applying the same principles of thirds for balancing and composing her artwork. She also enjoys playing with negative space to highlight the animals and create breathing room for their pose or actions. This results in clean, impactful paintings. Helen has fun creating ranges such as the Big 5-Little 5: portraying a baby elephant interacting with an elephant shrew in a quirky, playful way. It

gave her great joy seeing how people, especially children, react to these at Art in the Park.

I have always had a love for and fascination with art – particularly watercolours. Douglas Treasure of Fishoek and the late Richard Rennie from Clarens were artists I looked up to as mentors. I also really value artists like Alvaro Castagnet and Nita Engele. My art is displayed in various galleries, such as Green Gallery, Mount Edge-combe; Maytime in Kloof and Riverbend in Southbroom. I run a ful-ly inclusive three day art workshop called ‘Umzumbe Beach Art Escape’ from Pumula Woods, located in our quaint little south coast village. From property developer to part time retired artist is quite a leap but some-thing I have always wanted to do. Watercolours

are becoming popular again in South Africa and I have established a foothold into the beginnings of a market in the United States.I am a keen mountain biker, cook and when the mood grabs, some fine weather surfing as well!

hilary Grant-Currie

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL F Hilary Grant-Currie has the privilege of living in rural Zululand with its wealth of natural beauty. Taking inspiration from her environment, the artist’s work investigates the relationship between the artist and her surroundings, capturing her dependence on, and love for nature, especially fauna and flora found in her immediate surroundings. Drawing with self-produced charcoal, the collected burnt matter is no longer a static element just observed, but

an active co-participant. As each produces its own individual characteristic marks, it makes the art not only an expression of the artist’s inner landscape but also a physical expression of her outer landscape. Though she works mainly in oils, she continuously explores new techniques and various media. Currently she is enjoying charcoal and mixed media sketches of trees and birds which change and evolve during the process and it is this process that she finds exciting and challenging.

ilma matthewSPERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL O Ilma is drawn to painting places which hold special meaning to her; environments that capture her imagination; places she enjoys revisiting; and surroundings that bring about a feeling of inner peace. She expresses those emotions and impressions in her artwork. Ilma is drawn to depicting tranquillity in her paintings and this appears as her main focus.

Her joy in the use of colour and using that colour to determine the mood of each painting best describes her work. She largely works with seascapes, landscapes and the human interaction with nature in various forms. Her love of creating something that will draw others to appreciate its source is what makes Ilma express herself through her artwork. Her medium is oil on canvas.

iZolda Van der merwe

PERSPECTIVE WILD GARDEN DDMy work is inspired by everyday objects, situations and people. Working in mixed media, my art has pushed the limits of different application processes. This has opened up a world of possibilities in executing technique/creating art, pushing those boundaries in growing my style of art. Being an avid gardener and collector of aloes and succulents, the geometric patterns and symmetry of the plant structures has fascinated me. There is a sense of order in

their construction, which resonates with finding order in everyday life. Great influences in my work are Hung Liu (a Chinese-born American contemporary artist) and Michael Carson (American painter). Their use of pattern and movement has added to the freedom of expanding my technique and breathing life into the canvas. Being aware of a “traditional” landscape or portrait style of painting has allowed me to transform that visualisation/surrealism of my mind into a visible reality.

Julia FormanPERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 5I describe myself as an abstract representational artist, focusing on the attitude and movement of my subjects. My work is about mark making,

strong linear elements and fearless use of colour. These characteristics have become my signature and I continue to nurture them.

PERSPECTIVE CHURHILL SMy love for animals and quirkiness, combined with my love for period films and vintage/an-tique fashion and photography have recently in-spired me to explore anthropomorphism, where I have had great fun combining the animal spirit

with all things vintage in my paintings. To my delight this concept has been met with great enthusiasm by the local KZN art lovers, inspiring me to delve more deeply into this fantastical realm, and I look forward to exhibiting my latest work at The Hilton Arts Festival 2017!

kathy JaCoBPERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 7Oil on Canvas - specializing in birds

kerry miChauPERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL BI specialise in watercolour painting which I have done since studying Fine Art at Stellenbosch University. I am constantly challenged by this fluid medium which I love to use to portray a variety of subject matter including wildlife, botanicals and more abstract African landscapes. With my landscapes

in particular, I try to use watercolour in a vibrant, unconventional way depicting my own interpretation of African landscapes which are inspired by the changing of the seasons and weather patterns. We are fortunate to have spectacular landscapes and wildlife in our country and I try to capture elements of its beauty in my work.

kim perreiraPERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL D I work predominantly in oils. I love to activate the surface of my canvas with a layer of bright colour/s before deciding what image will be most suited to paint onto it. All reference material is from my own collection of photographs. Subject matter is varied, from seascapes to portraits and pretty much everything in between.

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL THer favourite subject matter is varied: landscapes, floral, figures and street scenes. She uses a “loose painterly style”!!

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL L I studied fine arts in PMB under Jack Heath, working in 3 media: oil, water colour and etchings. Most of my subjects are from

nature as I have a background as a florist. My preference is for scenery in an impressionistic style.

maren SChareinPERSPECTIVE WILD GARDEN FF My works, in oil on canvas, are mostly expressionistic elements of nature, highly abstracted. Colour is the most important aspect and often the main ingredient of my work.

My “Moonlight and Trees” series illustrates this. For the dotted work I use acrylic on canvas. Subject matter is often inspired by nature, various cultures or simply born in my mind.

mat louwrenSPERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 2Mat has been painting professionally for 36 years, concentrating on a number of subjects in a variety of the popular media: oils, acrylics, watercolours and sand paintings.

When acrylics were introduced into SA, Mat was involved in the marketing and developed a system of using them as watercolours. He has held workshops throughout SA and in Canada. His Sand Paintings, which he pioneered, are unique in the world and have brought him international acclaim.

They have brought his work into the investment market, combining investment value with beauty and are greatly valued.

niCola Firth

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 4Having studied Fine Art at UKZN, Nicki began painting professionally in 2009. Drawing inspiration from daily life, frequent travels to the Transkei, Mozambique and weekends spent in the Midlands, she aims to create paintings that will enhance a living or working space, giving the viewer a feeling of serenity and contentment. Her paintings are often

described as ‘peaceful’ and ‘easy to live with’. Nicki prefers to use her own photographs as references, and chooses to work mostly in oils as the colours are vibrant and achieve the required result. She also enjoys experimenting with acrylics, texture paste and mixed media. A regular exhibitor at Hilton Arts Festival for the past 9 years, Nicki’s work hangs proudly in local and international collections.

paula BreetZke

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 26 Penny is a professional artist living in Pietermaritzburg. Her passion for the African environment and its wildlife is depicted through her art, which encompasses African fauna and

landscapes, in oils and acrylics. She has illustrated numerous books on birds and other wildlife, with her particular speciality being African game birds. Her work can be viewed on her website or at her home studio.

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL N As an artist I’m drawn to wildlife. I feel a deep connection to this country and continent; Africa is a place of so much beauty and rhythm. I’m captivated by the brief moments, captured by a wildlife photographer, that draw a myriad of emotions from the viewer: an elephant gently brushing her trunk over the skull of a predecessor, a male lion watching an old buffalo bull emerge out of a reed bed or the moment a

springbok stands to attention, noticing danger. Life, death, family, survival, love & connection. My hope is that my paintings stand simply on their own, that they express themselves without the necessity of words. I strive to create a connection between the viewer and the animal, to share a moment in time. My style is somewhat stylized, graphic, and abstract, with an element of realism. I emphasize a play with colour.

pippa Birkett

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 6 Being married to a fisherman I am always on wonderful adventures and seeing such beautiful scenery. I love to paint landscapes of the Transkei, tropical Mozambique and farms in the Midlands. Recently I have also painted some winter bush scenes. Flowers will always feature in my exhibition as I believe everyone

has to have a floral painting to freshen up the home and create happiness! I work in oil paint, with multiple layers of colours. I studied Art at Stellenbosch University and have many creative outputs. I am very lucky always to get such great feedback that I keep painting and creating art for homes!

ryan & Jodie louBSer

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 19 Jodie and Ryan studied graphic design at the Pretoria Technicon, studying under renowned SA artists Lynette Ten Krooden, Carl Jeppe , Annette Pretorius and Danie de Wet. Jodie’s extensive travels through Europe and SA have inspired her choice of subjects. She enjoys the freedom of experimenting with methods of applying paint. Each painting has its own story and emotion woven within the technique. Ryan draws inspiration from other South

African artists including Pierneef, Boonzaier and Wenning. There is a privacy of emotion in his subject, which leaves the viewer with a memory of nostalgia. His painting “Spookhuis in die Reen” has been used on the cover of a poetry book, “Vloeibare Middelpunt” by Martjie Bosman. Ryan and Jodie run their own travelling art gallery called THE LOUBSER HOUSE ART GALLERY. They bring their art and the art of fellow artists to the public by attending art shows all over SA.

PERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL A My work has no significant symbolism or meaning; I paint because it’s simply beautiful. Having lived all my life on a farm in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands, the carefree farm life style has influenced my work. I obtained a B.A in Graphic Design from a Private Academy in Stellenbosch. I then went onto completing my Honours in Ceramics. My passion for painting and creating started from a young age, and, being self-

taught, it has come naturally. My work reflects simple beauty, having no attached symbolism or meaning. It is purely my love for painting and nature. However, I do specialize in watercolour botanicals. I also love the loose and expressive quality of oil painting and mixed media. Having a very supportive family that has allowed me to live my dream of being an artist, I have always been encouraged to follow my passion.

Sarah kelly

Sarah pryke

PERSPECTIVE WILD GARDEN EE I create original, intricate and unique glass and mosaic artwork inspired by the incredible beauty of nature. I aim to capture not just the shape, pattern and lines of the subject and scene, but also their character and personality. I work with different media and often com-bine a number of diverse media into a single artwork. I have a special affinity for glass, and I hand sculpt my own, often in kilns and over

the flame torch (‘hot’ glass), to create original elements for each artwork. I also make my own ceramic tiles (often with glass) to produce unique colours, variations and textures that complement the artwork. Most of my artworks are three-dimensional incorporating both natural and recycled materials, thus placing the subject into a realistic and natural context. My glass and mosaic artworks are exhibited and sold both locally and all over the world.

Sharleen Boaden

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 3My art is my poetry and I find it best expressed in florals and whimsical figures. When painting with oils, I usually listen to Chopin, an artist whose music connects very deeply with me. Often I revert to my old love, drawing, and

I especially enjoy using charcoal with oils to create a monochromatic sketchy painting. My work is often described as soft and romantic and can be found in many private collections. I am also represented by art galleries in South Africa and the UK.

Shirley howellSPERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 11 From the first daub of paint on canvas I knew that what I really wanted to do with my life was paint. On the wrong side of fifty there was much to learn, achieve and absorb.

My style ranges from realism to what could be described as traditional, modern impressionism , with an underlying passion for colour and light. I paint energy and movement. I tell stories, share experiences, involve the viewers’ emotions.

I meander down the path of romantic florals, portraiture, rustic landscapes with ramshackle buildings, musicians with attitude and quiet kitchen moments. I have won various awards, had work accepted in prestigious showings, been published in an international book on Still Life, been featured in the SA Artist Magazine, had work included in the collections of notable collectors. One of my works was used on the set of the Anant Singh movie, “A Long Walk to Freedom”.

Simon VenterPERSPECTIVE WILD GARDEN AAI have mainly worked in portraits, as my preferred subject matter, but my body of work includes landscapes, seascapes, still life and abstract pieces. My preferred medium is oil paint but I do also work in pencil. My inspiration for my style is van Gogh, Monet and Michelangelo. The era that most inspires me is from the more classical works up until the impressionists. Contemporary artists whose work I greatly enjoy are that of Cesar Santos and David Cheifetz.

StookS wilton

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 25I started painting when I retired from farming in East Griqualand, KZN. This explains why many of my landscapes depict everyday farming scenes from this beautiful part of the world - cattle, sheep, and farm workers as they go about their days. We are fortunate in South Africa to be blessed with amazingly diverse scenery and

brilliant variations of light. I travel a lot, and endeavour to capture this play of light in my paintings of the Cape, our coastline, the Karoo, the Highveld, and our incomparable bushveld. I consider it a compliment and huge honour to know that many of my paintings hang on the walls of homes and offices, not only here, but across the world.

thea BurGerPERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 21 I mainly work in oils. I love to paint flowers (still life) and land-scapes. I have been painting full time for 10 years and have developed my own style which is contemporary and loose.

After attending a Louis Audie demonstration in East London in 2001, I was inspired to start paint-ing and, the rest - they - is history. An avid surfer since 1971, my first love was the sea which immediately became a natural subject matter and comfort zone when painting. The combination of art and sea came naturally. Colour, movement and mood have been dominant factors in my seascapes which have developed into a distinctive and recogniz-able style. My landscapes often include water and have also developed from my love of colour and water as well as the feeling of peace and

tranquillity they evoke.

In 2003 I attended a painting week at Sunnyside Guest Farm, Clarens, where I was privileged and grateful to spend time painting in the company of many wonderful and talented artists. Their tips and advice were invaluable in the develop-ment of my craft.

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 17 Veronica Herbert is inspired by our incredible wildlife and wild, open spaces. She is competent in all media, but prefers watercolours for her bird studies which are executed on handmade paper which she paints in fine detail. Her

landscapes are painted in oil and acrylic are more impressionist in style. Infinite horizons, threatening storms and the rich colours of autumn or winter are her favourite themes. She has her own gallery “Art on Victoria” in Pietermaritzburg.

PERSPECTIVE BELL TOWER 10 Willie began painting later in life. His painting style is impressionistic and my subject matter is vast and varied: from street scenes, rural landscapes and seascapes to harbours and people. He has displayed the determination of a man that knows what his goal in life is, and how to get there. His most recent work is

done in oil and acrylic on canvas, and he loves the vibrant colour this versatile medium gives him. Willie’s colourful interpretations of life have found their way into galleries and private collections all over South Africa. Willie was featured in the latest Artist magazine with one of his paintings on the cover.

wim rautenBaChPERSPECTIVE CHURCHILL P Spontaneous freedom and honesty are the feelings which are evoked in my oil paintings. Light and form play an important part in the creative process. The work is neither static nor totally realistic but allows movement, light and atmosphere to be experienced.

yVonne lariVierePERSPECTIVE WILD GARDEN CCI am privileged to live in the Midlands with its beautiful scenery and farm life. It therefore comes as no surprise that my work includes farm scenes, which include horses, dogs, chickens and ducks. I also love to travel and visit our country’s delightful small towns, and many of the photographs that I take are reflected in the

paintings that I create. The late Carlo Sdoya was my mentor and I attended his weekly workshops for almost 5 years. Most of my work is done in oil with palette knife. I try to keep it ‘loose’, thereby moving away from realism. My work can be found in galleries and in private collections locally and overseas. I hope you will enjoy and appreciate what I have created.

Tendai has been playing guitar since he was a young boy. He was initially self- taught, singing pop, Afro pop, country, ballads and soft rock. He has written some original songs as well. Through word of mouth there was a growing demand for his performances. Although teaching is his full time day job, he finds performing opportunities

greatly satisfying. Performances include weddings, restaurants, corporate functions, private birthdays and churches. He has played with bands, collaborated with violinists and other artists, but mostly plays as a solo artist. He draws his inspiration from the likes of Eric Clapton, Tommy Emmanuel and Mark Knofler.

John Ellis is a singer-songwriter from Durban, South Africa. The former front-man for Tree63, John lectures, writes, records and produces other artists. His third solo album, “Tells”, was released in May 2017. He will entertain you in the Bistro.

Pillar Box Red is a four man band, made up of Brandon Jones, lead vocalist, Bruere Venter, lead guitarist, back up vocalist, James Harrison, also on the saxophone and Nic Forster on the violin. They have performed several times in the Midlands, notably opening for Beatenberg at the 2016 Michaelhouse

Music Festival, and for The Kiffness in the 2017 festival. They perform covers of popular modern songs, but like to add their own unique twist. All four are currently music students in matric at Michaelhouse. Most of all, they are a group of four mates, who enjoy making music together!

The band was formed three years ago and it was made up of six boys: three guitarists, a pianist, a drummer and a singer. Today it has ten members, both boys and girls. There are five guitarists, three pianists, a drummer and a bassist. They all sing. The band has played at the “Press Club Restaurant” as well as forming an

integral part of all the school’s cultural activities. In 2015 the band was part of a school tour to Cape Town where they played at 8 school and public venues. The repertoire includes many pop, rock and classic songs including Hotel California, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Summer of 69.

SA musician Rowan Stuart has created an inimi-table brand of ‘folk-meets-pop’ music, seamless-ly crossing over from acoustic singer-songwriter to radio charting pop artist, while retaining his signature depth of content. Recalling Sting’s imaginative storytelling, Death Cab For Cutie’s sense of space and beauty, and John Mayer’s tight grooves, Rowan uses his notable prowess on the guitar as the foundation for his creativity. Rowan’s career came into full swing in 2014 with the release of his acoustic album ‘Hidden Doors’.

He has since toured South Africa, and opened for some of the country’s biggest acts, including The Parlotones, Prime Circle and Matthew Mole. His single “Silver Balloon”, released late in 2016, was play-listed on major radio stations across South Africa, including 5FM, East Coast Radio, Algoa FM, KFM and 947.

Westville Girls’ High School introduced a Marimba band as an extra-curricular activity in 2013. Over the past four years, the number of learners involved has grown to require two full bands, under the guidance of Calvin Human, who graduated from the Berklee College of Music (USA). As our bands have rarely performed for the public outside of the Westville community, they look forward to sharing their fruits of their dedication to and passion for Marimbas with the Festival audience. Our Senior Band - the Griffin Girls - are currently preparing for the SAMBA National Championship, which will be held in Pretoria later this year. We hope you enjoy what our learners have to offer! The Durban Girls’ College Prestige Marimba band is a group of 8 matric girls. Coached by Calvin Human, a graduate of Berklee College of Music, the girls come together once a week to learn not only to play marimbas, but how to work in a team and develop a strong sense of

community and belonging. Last year, the band travelled to Empangeni and participated in the South African Marching Band Association and won gold for their enthusiastic and energetic performance. Their constant high standard of performance has earned the girls a reputation of excellent regard among peers and other schools.

The Jazz Minkeys is Durban’s own post-modern jazz orchestra, which is to say a big old eclectic Jazz band line up that takes a cheeky look back through our collective musical heritage. Our originally arranged repertoire covers a broad cross section of music from early traditional material through to some modern popular hits: Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, Burt Bacharach, Hugh Masekela, Pharrell Williams and some of our own original compositions, to make it a fun and colourful experience for both the audience and ourselves. The Minkeys power house line- up includes a collection of heavy hitters from the Durban Jazz scene, each member a

recorded artist, composer, arranger and band leader in their own right: the line- up includes but is not limited to: Neil Gonsalves on piano, Demi Fernandez on guitar, Ildo Nandja on bass, Zoe Masuku and Nosihe Zulu on vocals, Riley Giandhari on drums, Tom Hare on sax and Daniel Sheldon on trumpet.

CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation was established in 1979 as a support group to parents of children with cancer, by parents of children with cancer. Having experienced the im-mense emotional and financial toll that cancer takes they recognised there is more than one victim in the family of the child with cancer. Their aim was to ease the burden on parents facing the same journey by providing access to relevant, accu-rate information, as well as emo-tional and practical support. From the onset CHOC provided support in the hospital wards, hence the name Children’s Haematology Oncology Clinics, or CHOC. Gradually parent

groups were set up in other key centres, where the major state-fund-ed academic hospitals are located and paediatric oncologists practise. CHOC does not receive funding from government but relies heavily on donations from caring corporates, individuals and parents of children with cancer. Funds raised are used to provide

all-encompassing support – from direct practical help to the children and their families and those involved in the treatment – to necessary equipment.

Durban based jazz musician, George Mari, describes him-self as a musician, trumpet player, pianist, composer, educator, community music practitioner and father of two delightful daughters! He has released three albums, two of which are collections of his own com-positions: Syringa Avenue (2006); My Mecca (2008) and Charade (2010). George works with a wide range of Durban based musicians including Philani Ngidi, Trevor Donjeaney, Ildo Nandja, Melvin Peters, Burton Naidoo, Neil Gonsalves, Sbu Zondi, Sidney Rash and Debbie Mari. He is a part-time lecturer in the Jazz Studies programme at the UKZN School of Arts (Music) and in 2013

George and Debbie Mari started Marigold Music School as an opportunity to share their knowl-edge and skills as professional musicians and experienced educators with children and adults of all abilities in the greater Durban area. The Kickstands pride themselves on being able to perform at intimate venues as well as major festivals and showcase events. They’ve had the privilege to perform amongst and support some of South Africa’s most popular artists such as Goldfish, Just Jinjer, Goodluck, Albert Frost, Dan Patlansky, Arno Carstens, Matthew Mole, Gangs of Ballet, Desmond & the Tutus and Mango Groove. Without radio support, their live performances have carried a unique, improvised and energetic acoustic sound around Southern Africa gaining fans along the way, all the while fine-tuning their craft. Most of all, enjoying the journey.

FreeMe KZN Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre was established to rescue, rehabilitate and release orphaned, ill or injured wildlife from the Midlands area of KwaZulu Natal. Initially, with the assistance of WESSA (Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa), land was acquired from a local farmer on a 50 year lease and a state of the art clinic was built. The clinic opened its doors in March 2008 and FreeMe KZN has been running as an NGO since then. In 2012FreeMe handled 757 patients, including a number of antelope, and 15 threatened or protected Species, including serval, reedbuck and oribi. As the centre

gets busier, a number of areas have been identified as requiring additional expenditure. These include antelope bomas, small predator cages and large flight aviaries for birds such as cranes and storks. In addition the increase in patients has meant a big increase in monthly running costs. It is increasingly difficult to raise funds. It is vitally important that the centre continues to operate as the need for wildlife rehabilitation in this area is growing on a daily basis as the human impact on the environment increases and as climate change causes more and more conflict between wildlife and people.
