The History, Nature, and Economics of Wood The existence of a wood economy, or more correctly, a forest economy (since in many countries a bamboo economy predominates), is a prominent matter in many developing countries as well as in many other nations with temperate climate and especially in those with low temperatures . These are generally the countries with greater forested areas. The uses of wood in furniture, buildings, bridges, and as a source of energy are widely known. Additionally, wood from trees and bushes , can be employed in a wide variety, including those produced from wood pulp , as cellulose in paper, celluloid in early photographic film, cellophane , and rayon (a substitute for silk). At the end of their normal usage, wood products can be burnt to obtain thermal energy , or can be used as a fertilizer . The potential environmental damage that a wood economy could occasion include (problems of reduction the biodiversity due to monoculture forestry - the intensive cultivation of very few types of trees); and CO2 emissions. However, forests can aid in reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide and therefore decrease global warming . Introduction History of use of wood

The wood economy is historically the starting point of the civilizations worldwide, since eras preceding the Paleolithic and the Neolithic. It necessarily precededages of metals by many centuries, as the melting of metals was possible only through the discovery of techniques to light fire (usually obtained by the scraping of two very dry wooden rods) and the building of many simple machines and rudimentary tools, as canes, club handles, bows, arrows, lances. One of the most ancient handmade articles ever found is one smoothed pricked of wood (Clacton Spear) 250,000 years old (third interglacial period), that was buried under sediments in England, at Clacton-on-Sea.[2][3]

Successive civilizations such as the Egyptians and Sumerians built sophisticated objects of furniture. Many types of furniture in ivory and valuable woods have survived to our time practically intact, because secluded in inviolated secret tombs, they were protected from decay also by the dry environment of desert.[4] Many buildings and parts of these (above all roofs) contained elements in wood (often of oak) forming structural supports and covering; means of transport such as boats, ships; and later (with the invention of the wheel) wagons and carriages, winches, flour mills powered by water, etc.

Dimensions and geography of wood economy

The main source of the lumber used in the world is forests, which can be classified as virgin, semivirgin and plantations. Much timber is removed for firewood by local populations in many countries, especially in the third world, but this amount can only be estimated, with wide margins of uncertainty.

In 1998, the worldwide production of "roundwood" (officially counted wood not used as firewood), was about 1,500,000,000 cubic metres (2.0×109 cu yd), amounting to around 45% of the wood cultivated in the world. Cut logs and branches destined to become elements for building construction accounted for approximately 55% of the world's industrial wood production. 25% became wood pulp (including wood powder and truccioli) mainly destined for the production ofpaper and paperboard, and approximately 20% became panels in plywood and valuable wood for furnitures and objects of common use (FAO 1998).[5] The World's largest producer and consumer of officially accounted wood is the USA, although the country that possesses the greatest area of forest is Russia.

In the 1970s, the countries with the largest forest area were: Soviet Union (approximately 8,800,000 km²), Brazil (5,150,000 km²), Canada (4,400,000 km²), USA(3,000,000 km²), Indonesia (1,200,000 km²) and Democratic Republic of Congo (1,000,000 km²). Other countries with important production and consumption of wood usually have a low density of population in relation to their territorial extension, here we can include countries as Argentina, Chile, Finland, Poland, Sweden,Ukraine.[citation needed]

By 2001 the rainforest areas of Brazil were reduced by a fifth (respect of 1970), to around 4,000,000 km²; the ground cleared was mainly destined for cattlepasture - Brazil is the world's largest exporter of beef with almost 200,000,000 head of cattle.[6] The booming Brazilian ethanol economy based upon sugar canecultivation, is likewise reducing forests area. Canadian forest was reduced by almost 30% to 3,101,340 km² over the same period.[7]

Importance in fighting greenhouse effect

Regarding the problem of climate change, it is known that burning forests increase CO2 in atmosphere, while intact virgin forest or plantations act as sinks for CO2, for these reasons wood economy fights greenhouse effect. The amount of CO2 absorbed depends on the type of trees, lands and the climate of the place where trees naturally grow or are planted. Moreover, by night plants do not photosynthesize, and produce CO2, eliminated the successive day. Paradoxically in summer oxygen created by photosynthesis in forests near to cities and urban parks, interacts with urban air pollution (from cars, etc.) and is transformed by solar beams in ozone (molecule of three oxygen atoms), that while in high atmosphere constitutes a filter against ultraviolet beams, in the low atmosphere is a pollutant, able to provoke respiratory disturbances.[8][9]

In a low-carbon economy, forestry operations will be focused on low-impact practices and regrowth. Forest managers will make sure that they do not disturb soil based carbon reserves too much. Specialized tree farms will be the main source of material for many products. Quick maturing tree varieties will be grown on short rotations in order to maximize output.[10]

Eucalyptus: these are seven hundred tree species from Australia, that grow very fast in tropical, sub-tropical and semi-arid climates, and are very resistant to forest fires (with their tree cortex) and drought. Its essential oil is used in pharmacology, its wood for building, and the small branches as firewood and pulpwood.

Wood economy in Brazil

Brazil has a long tradition in the harvesting of several types of trees with specific uses. Since the 1960s, imported species of pine tree and eucalyptus have been grown mostly for the plywood and paper pulp industries. Currently high-level research is being conducted, to apply the enzymes of sugar cane fermentation to cellulose in wood, in order to obtain methanol, but the cost is much higher when compared with ethanol derived from corn costs.[11]

Brazilwood: has a dense, orange-red heartwood that takes a high red shine (brasa=ember), and it is the premier wood used for making bows for string instruments from the violin family. These trees soon became the biggest source of red dye, and they were such a large part of the economy and export of that country, that slowly it was known as Brazil.[12]

Hevea brasiliensis: is the biggest source of the best latex, that is used to manufacture many objects in rubber, as an example gloves, condoms, anti-allergicmattresses and tires (vulcanized rubber). Latex has the ability to adjust to the exact shape of the body part, an advantage over polyurethane or polyethylenegloves.

Wood economy in Canada & USA

There is a close relation in the forestry economy between these countries, they have many tree genus in common, and Canada is the main producer of wood and wooden items destined to the USA, the biggest consumer of wood and its byproducts in the world. The water systems of the Great Lakes, Erie Canal, Hudson River and Saint Lawrence Seaway to the east coast and Mississippi to central plains and Louisiana allows transportation of logs at very low costs. In the west coast the basin of the Columbia River has plenty of forests with excellent timber.

Canada

The agency Canada Wood Council calculates that in the year 2005 in Canada, the forest sector employed 930,000 workers (1 job in every 17), making around $108 billion of value in goods and services. For many years products derived from trees in Canadian forests had been the most important export items of the country. In 2011, exports around the world totaled some $64.3 billion – the single largest contributor to Canadian trade balance.[7][13]

Canada is the world leader in Sustainable forest management practices. Only 120 million ha (28% of Canadian forests) are currently managed for timber production while an estimated 32 million ha are protected from harvesting by the current legislation.[14]

USA

Cherry: has a hardwood prized for its high quality in grain, width, color, and rich warm glow.[15] The first trees were carried to the lands surrounding Rome (Latium) from Armenia.[16] In the United States, most cherry trees are grown in Washington, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, California and Oregon.[17]

Cedar: this genus are coniferas of the pinaceae family, originating from high mountain areas fromCarpathians, Lebanon, Turkey to Himalaya. Their scented wood make them suitable for chests and closet lining. Cedar oil and wood is known to be a natural repellent to moths.[18] Actually are planted in western and southern USA, mostly for ornamental purposes, but also for the production of pencils (speciallyincense-cedar).

Douglas-fir: is a native tree of the United States west coast, with records in fast grow and the reaching of high statures in brief time. It has the ability to grow in mountains until the height of 1,800 meters. Their wood is used for construction, for homebuilt aircraft, for paper pulp, and also as firewood.

Hybrid poplar is being investigated by Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee [19][20] for genetic engineering in order to obtain a tree with a higher content of cellulose and a lower content in lignin, in such a way that the extraction of bioethanol (useful as a fuel) could be easier and less expensive.

Walnut: It is a prized furniture and carving hardwood because of its colour, hardness, grain and durability. Walnut wood has been the timber of choice for gun makers for centuries. It remains one of the most popular choices for rifle and shotgun stocks.[21]

Wood economy in the Caribbean & Central America

Mahogany: has a straight grain, usually free of voids and pockets. The most prized species come from Cuba and Honduras. It has a reddish-brown color, which darkens over time, and displays a beautiful reddish sheen when polished. It has excellent workability, is available in big boards, and is very durable. Mahogany is used in the making of many musical instruments, as drums, acoustic and electric guitars' back and side, and luxury headphones.

Wood economy in Europe

Italy

The species that are ideal for the many uses in this type of economy are those employed by arboriculture, that are very well known for their features and the need for certain types of ground and climates.

Fraxinus: being a lightweight wood is easy to transport, as firewood burns easily, grows in damp environments like those present in river flooding areas, stands pollution of water and air.

Larix: in Italy it grows at high altitudes around mountain tops, its timber stand sudden climatic change, from icy winds to high temperatures in sunny afternoon summers, it is excellent for use in the building of exposed structures as bridges, roofs, etc.

Stone pine: "Mediterranean pine" could be the noble emblem of many coastal areas in Italy, originally giant forests of pines extended from the mouth of theTiber river until Liguria and Provence in France, over soils with high salinity, not very apt for agriculture. Its trees produce a vast amount of dry branches that can be burnt, cones (used for Christmas decoration) and needle-like foliage that can be burnt, or used as mulch. Oils and resins can be used in scents andointments. The pinoli are useful elements in Italian cooking (along with basil are tritured to make pesto sauce). Currently, "progress" has brought to a severe reduction of this magnificent tree extensions, and in many places cheap beach buildings, car-parking and semi-abandoned areas have taken their place.

Poplar: in Italy is the most important species for tree plantations, is used for several purposes as plywood manufacture, packing boxes, paper, matches, etc. It needs good quality grounds with good drainage, but can be used to protect the cultivations if disposed in windbreak lines. More than 70% of Italian poplar cultivations are located in the pianura Padana. Constantly the extension of the cultivation is being reduced, from 650 km² in the 1980s to current 350 km². The yield of poplars is about 1,500 t/km² of wood every year.[22] The production from poplars is around 45-50% of the total Italian wood production.[23]

In the history of art poplar was the wood of choice for painting surfaces as panels, as in Renaissance (The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci). Because of this reason, many of the products with the highest added value, extremely expensive, are made with wood from the humble but durable poplar.

Because of the presence of tannic acid, poplar cortex was often used in Europe for the tanning of leather.

Portugal

Oak for cork: are trees with a slow growth, but long life, are cultivated in warm hill areas (min. temp. > -5°Celsius) in all the west area of Mediterranean shores. Popular for bulletin boards. Even if the production as stoppers for wine bottles is diminishing in favor of nylon stoppers, in the sake of energy saving granules of cork can be mixed into concrete. This composites have low thermal conductivity, low density and good energy absorption (earthquake resistant). Some of the property ranges of the composites are density (400–1500 kg/m³), compressive strength (1–26 MPa) and flexural strength (0.5–4.0 MPa).[24] Because of this cork can be used as thermal isolation in buildings (as well in its natural form and as a mixture), useful also as sound insulation. In the shoe industry cork is used as soles and insoles. In the world there are 20,000 km² of cork oak plantations, and every year are extracted around 300,000 tons of cork, 50% inPortugal, 15,000 in Italy (12,000 in the island of Sardinia). The advantage of this natural industry is that the extraction of cork from layers outer to the cortexdoes not kills the tree.

Wood economy in Scandinavia and Russia

In Sweden, Finland and to an extent Norway, much of the land area is forested, the pulp and paper industry is one of the most significant industrial sectors. Chemical pulping produces an excess of energy, since the organic matter in black liquor, mostly lignin and hemicellulose breakdown products, is burned in therecovery boiler. Thus, these countries have high proportions of renewable energy use (25% in Finland, for instance). Considerable effort is directed towards increasing the value and usage of forest products by companies and by government projects.

Scots pine and Norway spruce: These species comprise most of boreal forest, and together as a softwood mixture they are converted chemical pulp for paper.

Birch: is a genus with many species of trees from Scandinavia and Russia, excellent for acid grounds. They act as pioneer species in the frozen border between taiga and tundra, are very resistant to periods of drought and icy conditions. The species Betula nana has been identified as the ideal tree for the acid grounds of the sides of sloped mountains, also in southern Europe, with soils poor in nutrients, where these trees can be used to restrain landslides.Dissolving pulp is produced from birch. Xylitol can be produced by hydrogenation of xylose, which is a byproduct of chemical pulping of birch.

Uses of wood

of trees, and other woody plants.

It has been used for thousands of years for both fuel and as a construction material. It is an organic material, a

natural composite of cellulose fibers (which are strong in tension) embedded in a matrix oflignin which resists compression.

Wood is sometimes defined as only the secondary xylem in the stems of trees,[1] or it is defined more broadly to include the

same type of tissue elsewhere such as in the roots of trees or shrubs. [citation needed] In a living tree it performs a support function,

enabling woody plants to grow large or to stand up by themselves. It also conveys water and nutrients between theleaves,

other growing tissues, and the roots. Wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to

material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber.

The Earth contains about 434 billion cubic meters of growing stock forest, 47% of which is commercial.[2] As an

abundant, carbon-neutral renewable resource, woody materials have been of intense interest as a source of renewable

energy. In 1991, approximately 3.5 cubic kilometers of wood were harvested. Dominant uses were for furniture and building

construction.[3]

History

A 2011 discovery in the Canadian province of New Brunswick uncovered the earliest known plants to have grown wood,

approximately 395 to 400 million years ago.[4] Wood can be dated by carbon dating and in some species

by dendrochronology to make inferences about when a wooden object was created.

People have used wood for millennia for many purposes, primarily as a fuel or as a construction material for making houses,

tools, weapons, furniture, packaging, artworks, and paper. The year-to-year variation in tree-ring widths and isotopic

abundances gives clues to the prevailing climate at that time.[5]

Physical properties

Growth rings

Wood, in the strict sense, is yielded by trees, which increase in diameter by the formation, between the existing wood and

the inner bark, of new woody layers which envelop the entire stem, living branches, and roots. This process is known

assecondary growth; it is the result of cell division in the vascular cambium, a lateral meristem, and subsequent expansion

of the new cells. Where there are clear seasons, growth can occur in a discrete annual or seasonal pattern, leading

to growth rings; these can usually be most clearly seen on the end of a log, but are also visible on the other surfaces. If

these seasons are annual these growth rings are referred to as annual rings. Where there is no seasonal difference growth

rings are likely to be indistinct or absent.

If there are differences within a growth ring, then the part of a growth ring nearest the center of the tree, and formed early in

the growing season when growth is rapid, is usually composed of wider elements. It is usually lighter in color than that near

the outer portion of the ring, and is known as earlywood or springwood. The outer portion formed later in the season is then

known as the latewood or summerwood.[6] However, there are major differences, depending on the kind of wood (see below).

Knots

A knot is a particular type of imperfection in a piece of wood; it will affect the technical properties of the wood, usually

reducing the local strength and increasing the tendency for splitting along the wood grain, but may be exploited for visual

effect. In a longitudinally sawn plank, a knot will appear as a roughly circular "solid" (usually darker) piece of wood around

which the grain of the rest of the wood "flows" (parts and rejoins). Within a knot, the direction of the wood (grain direction) is

up to 90 degrees different from the grain direction of the regular wood.

In the tree a knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud. A knot (when the base of a side branch) is conical in

shape (hence the roughly circular cross-section) with the inner tip at the point in stem diameter at which the plant's vascular

cambium was located when the branch formed as a bud.

During the development of a tree, the lower limbs often die, but may remain attached for a time, sometimes years.

Subsequent layers of growth of the attaching stem are no longer intimately joined with the dead limb, but are grown around

it. Hence, dead branches produce knots which are not attached, and likely to drop out after the tree has been sawn into

boards.

In grading lumber and structural timber, knots are classified according to their form, size, soundness, and the firmness with

which they are held in place. This firmness is affected by, among other factors, the length of time for which the branch was

dead while the attaching stem continued to grow.

Knots materially affect cracking and warping, ease in working, and cleavability of timber. They are defects which weaken

timber and lower its value for structural purposes where strength is an important consideration. The weakening effect is

much more serious when timber is subjected to forces perpendicular to the grain and/or tensionthan where under load along

the grain and/or compression. The extent to which knots affect the strength of a beamdepends upon their position, size,

number, and condition. A knot on the upper side is compressed, while one on the lower side is subjected to tension. If there

is a season check in the knot, as is often the case, it will offer little resistance to this tensile stress. Small knots, however,

may be located along the neutral plane of a beam and increase the strength by preventing longitudinal shearing. Knots in a

board or plank are least injurious when they extend through it at right angles to its broadest surface. Knots which occur near

the ends of a beam do not weaken it. Sound knots which occur in the central portion one-fourth the height of the beam from

either edge are not serious defects.

Knots do not necessarily influence the stiffness of structural timber, this will depend on the size and location. Stiffness and

elastic strength are more dependent upon the sound wood than upon localized defects. The breaking strength is very

susceptible to defects. Sound knots do not weaken wood when subject to compression parallel to the grain.

In some decorative applications, wood with knots may be desirable to add visual interest. In applications where wood

is painted, such as skirting boards, fascia boards, door frames and furniture, resins present in the timber may continue to

'bleed' through to the surface of a knot for months or even years after manufacture and show as a yellow or brownish stain.

A knot primer paint or solution (knotting), correctly applied during preparation, may do much to reduce this problem but it is

difficult to control completely, especially when using mass-produced kiln-dried timber stocks.

Heartwood and sapwood

Heartwood (or duramen[8]) is wood that as a result of a naturally occurring chemical transformation has become more

resistant to decay. Heartwood formation occurs spontaneously (it is a genetically programmed process). Once heartwood

formation is complete, the heartwood is dead.[9] Some uncertainty still exists as to whether heartwood is truly dead, as it can

still chemically react to decay organisms, but only once.[10]

Heartwood is often visually distinct from the living sapwood, and can be distinguished in a cross-section where the boundary

will tend to follow the growth rings. For example, it is sometimes much darker. However, other processes such as decay or

insect invasion can also discolor wood, even in woody plants that do not form heartwood, which may lead to confusion.

Sapwood (or alburnum[8]) is the younger, outermost wood; in the growing tree it is living wood,[9] and its principal functions are

to conduct water from the roots to the leaves and to store up and give back according to the season the reserves prepared

in the leaves. However, by the time they become competent to conduct water, all xylem tracheids and vessels have lost their

cytoplasm and the cells are therefore functionally dead. All wood in a tree is first formed as sapwood. The more leaves a

tree bears and the more vigorous its growth, the larger the volume of sapwood required. Hence trees making rapid growth in

the open have thicker sapwood for their size than trees of the same species growing in dense forests. Sometimes trees (of

species that do form heartwood) grown in the open may become of considerable size, 30 cm or more in diameter, before

any heartwood begins to form, for example, in second-growth hickory, or open-grown pines.

The term heartwood derives solely from its position and not from any vital importance to the tree. This is evidenced by the

fact that a tree can thrive with its heart completely decayed. Some species begin to form heartwood very early in life, so

having only a thin layer of live sapwood, while in others the change comes slowly. Thin sapwood is characteristic of such

species as chestnut, black locust, mulberry, osage-orange, and sassafras, while in maple, ash, hickory, hackberry, beech,

and pine, thick sapwood is the rule. Others never form heartwood.

No definite relation exists between the annual rings of growth and the amount of sapwood. Within the same species the

cross-sectional area of the sapwood is very roughly proportional to the size of the crown of the tree. If the rings are narrow,

more of them are required than where they are wide. As the tree gets larger, the sapwood must necessarily become thinner

or increase materially in volume. Sapwood is thicker in the upper portion of the trunk of a tree than near the base, because

the age and the diameter of the upper sections are less.

When a tree is very young it is covered with limbs almost, if not entirely, to the ground, but as it grows older some or all of

them will eventually die and are either broken off or fall off. Subsequent growth of wood may completely conceal the stubs

which will however remain as knots. No matter how smooth and clear a log is on the outside, it is more or less knotty near

the middle. Consequently, the sapwood of an old tree, and particularly of a forest-grown tree, will be freer from knots than

the inner heartwood. Since in most uses of wood, knots are defects that weaken the timber and interfere with its ease of

working and other properties, it follows that a given piece of sapwood, because of its position in the tree, may well be

stronger than a piece of heartwood from the same tree.

It is remarkable that the inner heartwood of old trees remains as sound as it usually does, since in many cases it is

hundreds, and in a few instances thousands, of years old. Every broken limb or root, or deep wound from fire, insects, or

falling timber, may afford an entrance for decay, which, once started, may penetrate to all parts of the trunk. The larvae of

many insects bore into the trees and their tunnels remain indefinitely as sources of weakness. Whatever advantages,

however, that sapwood may have in this connection are due solely to its relative age and position.

If a tree grows all its life in the open and the conditions of soil and site remain unchanged, it will make its most rapid growth

in youth, and gradually decline. The annual rings of growth are for many years quite wide, but later they become narrower

and narrower. Since each succeeding ring is laid down on the outside of the wood previously formed, it follows that unless a

tree materially increases its production of wood from year to year, the rings must necessarily become thinner as the trunk

gets wider. As a tree reaches maturity its crown becomes more open and the annual wood production is lessened, thereby

reducing still more the width of the growth rings. In the case of forest-grown trees so much depends upon the competition of

the trees in their struggle for light and nourishment that periods of rapid and slow growth may alternate. Some trees, such as

southern oaks, maintain the same width of ring for hundreds of years. Upon the whole, however, as a tree gets larger in

diameter the width of the growth rings decreases.

Different pieces of wood cut from a large tree may differ decidedly, particularly if the tree is big and mature. In some trees,

the wood laid on late in the life of a tree is softer, lighter, weaker, and more even-textured than that produced earlier, but in

other trees, the reverse applies. This may or may not correspond to heartwood and sapwood. In a large log the sapwood,

because of the time in the life of the tree when it was grown, may be inferior in hardness, strength, and toughness to equally

sound heartwood from the same log. In a smaller tree, the reverse may be true.

Colour

The wood of Coast Redwood is distinctively red.

In species which show a distinct difference between heartwood and sapwood the natural color of heartwood is usually

darker than that of the sapwood, and very frequently the contrast is conspicuous (see section of yew log above). This is

produced by deposits in the heartwood of chemical substances, so that a dramatic color difference does not mean a

dramatic difference in the mechanical properties of heartwood and sapwood, although there may be a dramatic chemical

difference.

Some experiments on very resinous Longleaf Pine specimens indicate an increase in strength, due to the resin which

increases the strength when dry. Such resin-saturated heartwood is called "fat lighter". Structures built of fat lighter are

almost impervious to rot and termites; however they are very flammable. Stumps of old longleaf pines are often dug, split

into small pieces and sold as kindling for fires. Stumps thus dug may actually remain a century or more since being

cut. Spruce impregnated with crude resin and dried is also greatly increased in strength thereby.

Since the latewood of a growth ring is usually darker in color than the earlywood, this fact may be used in judging the

density, and therefore the hardness and strength of the material. This is particularly the case with coniferous woods. In ring-

porous woods the vessels of the early wood not infrequently appear on a finished surface as darker than the denser

latewood, though on cross sections of heartwood the reverse is commonly true. Except in the manner just stated the color of

wood is no indication of strength.

Abnormal discoloration of wood often denotes a diseased condition, indicating unsoundness. The black check in

western hemlock is the result of insect attacks. The reddish-brown streaks so common in hickory and certain other woods

are mostly the result of injury by birds. The discoloration is merely an indication of an injury, and in all probability does not of

itself affect the properties of the wood. Certain rot-producing fungi impart to wood characteristic colors which thus become

symptomatic of weakness; however an attractive effect known as spalting produced by this process is often considered a

desirable characteristic. Ordinary sap-staining is due to fungal growth, but does not necessarily produce a weakening effect.

Water content

Water occurs in living wood in three conditions, namely:

1. in the cell walls,

2. in the protoplasmic contents of the cells, and

3. as free water in the cell cavities and spaces.

In heartwood it occurs only in the first and last forms. Wood that is thoroughly air-dried retains 8–16% of the water in the cell

walls, and none, or practically none, in the other forms. Even oven-dried wood retains a small percentage of moisture, but

for all except chemical purposes, may be considered absolutely dry.

The general effect of the water content upon the wood substance is to render it softer and more pliable. A similar effect of

common observation is in the softening action of water on rawhide, paper, or cloth. Within certain limits, the greater the

water content, the greater its softening effect.

Drying produces a decided increase in the strength of wood, particularly in small specimens. An extreme example is the

case of a completely dry spruce block 5 cm in section, which will sustain a permanent load four times as great as a green

(undried) block of the same size will.

The greatest strength increase due to drying is in the ultimate crushing strength, and strength at elastic limit in endwise

compression; these are followed by the modulus of rupture, and stress at elastic limit in cross-bending, while the modulus of

elasticity is least affected.[11]

Structure

Wood is a heterogeneous, hygroscopic, cellular and anisotropic material. It consists of cells, and the cell walls are

composed of micro-fibrils of cellulose (40% – 50%) and hemicellulose (15% – 25%) impregnated with lignin (15% – 30%).[12]

In coniferous or softwood species the wood cells are mostly of one kind, tracheids, and as a result the material is much more

uniform in structure than that of most hardwoods. There are no vessels ("pores") in coniferous wood such as one sees so

prominently in oak and ash, for example.

The structure of hardwoods is more complex.[13] The water conducting capability is mostly taken care of by vessels: in some

cases (oak, chestnut, ash) these are quite large and distinct, in others (buckeye, poplar, willow) too small to be seen without

a hand lens. In discussing such woods it is customary to divide them into two large classes, ring-porous anddiffuse-porous.[14]

In ring-porous species, such as ash, black locust, catalpa, chestnut, elm, hickory, mulberry, and oak,[14] the larger vessels or

pores (as cross sections of vessels are called) are localised in the part of the growth ring formed in spring, thus forming a

region of more or less open and porous tissue. The rest of the ring, produced in summer, is made up of smaller vessels and

a much greater proportion of wood fibers. These fibers are the elements which give strength and toughness to wood, while

the vessels are a source of weakness.[citation needed]

In diffuse-porous woods the pores are evenly sized so that the water conducting capability is scattered throughout the

growth ring instead of being collected in a band or row. Examples of this kind of wood are alder,[14] basswood,[citation

needed]birch,[14] buckeye, maple, willow,and the Populus species such as aspen, cottonwood and poplar.[14] Some species, such

as walnut and cherry, are on the border between the two classes, forming an intermediate group. [citation needed]

Earlywood and latewood

In temperate softwoods there often is a marked difference between latewood and earlywood. The latewood will be denser

than that formed early in the season. When examined under a microscope the cells of dense latewood are seen to be very

thick-walled and with very small cell cavities, while those formed first in the season have thin walls and large cell cavities.

The strength is in the walls, not the cavities. Hence the greater the proportion of latewood the greater the density and

strength. In choosing a piece of pine where strength or stiffness is the important consideration, the principal thing to observe

is the comparative amounts of earlywood and latewood. The width of ring is not nearly so important as the proportion and

nature of the latewood in the ring.

If a heavy piece of pine is compared with a lightweight piece it will be seen at once that the heavier one contains a larger

proportion of latewood than the other, and is therefore showing more clearly demarcated growth rings. In white pines there is

not much contrast between the different parts of the ring, and as a result the wood is very uniform in texture and is easy to

work. In hard pines, on the other hand, the latewood is very dense and is deep-colored, presenting a very decided contrast

to the soft, straw-colored earlywood.

It is not only the proportion of latewood, but also its quality, that counts. In specimens that show a very large proportion of

latewood it may be noticeably more porous and weigh considerably less than the latewood in pieces that contain but little.

One can judge comparative density, and therefore to some extent strength, by visual inspection.

No satisfactory explanation can as yet be given for the exact mechanisms determining the formation of earlywood and

latewood. Several factors may be involved. In conifers, at least, rate of growth alone does not determine the proportion of

the two portions of the ring, for in some cases the wood of slow growth is very hard and heavy, while in others the opposite

is true. The quality of the site where the tree grows undoubtedly affects the character of the wood formed, though it is not

possible to formulate a rule governing it. In general, however, it may be said that where strength or ease of working is

essential, woods of moderate to slow growth should be chosen.

In ring-porous woods

In ring-porous woods each season's growth is always well defined, because the large pores formed early in the season abut

on the denser tissue of the year before.

In the case of the ring-porous hardwoods there seems to exist a pretty definite relation between the rate of growth of timber

and its properties. This may be briefly summed up in the general statement that the more rapid the growth or the wider the

rings of growth, the heavier, harder, stronger, and stiffer the wood. This, it must be remembered, applies only to ring-porous

woods such as oak, ash, hickory, and others of the same group, and is, of course, subject to some exceptions and

limitations.

In ring-porous woods of good growth it is usually the latewood in which the thick-walled, strength-giving fibers are most

abundant. As the breadth of ring diminishes, this latewood is reduced so that very slow growth produces comparatively light,

porous wood composed of thin-walled vessels and wood parenchyma. In good oak these large vessels of the earlywood

occupy from 6 to 10 percent of the volume of the log, while in inferior material they may make up 25% or more. The

latewood of good oak is dark colored and firm, and consists mostly of thick-walled fibers which form one-half or more of the

wood. In inferior oak, this latewood is much reduced both in quantity and quality. Such variation is very largely the result of

rate of growth.

Wide-ringed wood is often called "second-growth", because the growth of the young timber in open stands after the old trees

have been removed is more rapid than in trees in a closed forest, and in the manufacture of articles where strength is an

important consideration such "second-growth" hardwood material is preferred. This is particularly the case in the choice of

hickory for handles and spokes. Here not only strength, but toughness and resilience are important. The results of a series

of tests on hickory by the U.S. Forest Service show that:

"The work or shock-resisting ability is greatest in wide-ringed wood that has from 5 to 14 rings per inch (rings 1.8-5

mm thick), is fairly constant from 14 to 38 rings per inch (rings 0.7–1.8 mm thick), and decreases rapidly from 38 to

47 rings per inch (rings 0.5–0.7 mm thick). The strength at maximum load is not so great with the most rapid-

growing wood; it is maximum with from 14 to 20 rings per inch (rings 1.3–1.8 mm thick), and again becomes less

as the wood becomes more closely ringed. The natural deduction is that wood of first-class mechanical value

shows from 5 to 20 rings per inch (rings 1.3–5 mm thick) and that slower growth yields poorer stock. Thus the

inspector or buyer of hickory should discriminate against timber that has more than 20 rings per inch (rings less

than 1.3 mm thick). Exceptions exist, however, in the case of normal growth upon dry situations, in which the slow-

growing material may be strong and tough."[15]

The effect of rate of growth on the qualities of chestnut wood is summarized by the same authority as follows:

"When the rings are wide, the transition from spring wood to summer wood is gradual, while in the narrow rings the

spring wood passes into summer wood abruptly. The width of the spring wood changes but little with the width of

the annual ring, so that the narrowing or broadening of the annual ring is always at the expense of the summer

wood. The narrow vessels of the summer wood make it richer in wood substance than the spring wood composed

of wide vessels. Therefore, rapid-growing specimens with wide rings have more wood substance than slow-

growing trees with narrow rings. Since the more the wood substance the greater the weight, and the greater the

weight the stronger the wood, chestnuts with wide rings must have stronger wood than chestnuts with narrow

rings. This agrees with the accepted view that sprouts (which always have wide rings) yield better and stronger

wood than seedling chestnuts, which grow more slowly in diameter." [15]

In diffuse-porous woods

In the diffuse-porous woods, the demarcation between rings is not always so clear and in some cases is almost (if

not entirely) invisible to the unaided eye. Conversely, when there is a clear demarcation there may not be a

noticeable difference in structure within the growth ring.

In diffuse-porous woods, as has been stated, the vessels or pores are even-sized, so that the water conducting

capability is scattered throughout the ring instead of collected in the earlywood. The effect of rate of growth is,

therefore, not the same as in the ring-porous woods, approaching more nearly the conditions in the conifers. In

general it may be stated that such woods of medium growth afford stronger material than when very rapidly or

very slowly grown. In many uses of wood, total strength is not the main consideration. If ease of working is prized,

wood should be chosen with regard to its uniformity of texture and straightness of grain, which will in most cases

occur when there is little contrast between the latewood of one season's growth and the earlywood of the next.

Structural material that resembles ordinary, "dicot" or conifer wood in its gross handling characteristics is

produced by a number of monocot plants, and these also are colloquially called wood. Of these, bamboo,

botanically a member of the grass family, has considerable economic importance, larger culms being widely used

as a building and construction material in their own right and, these days, in the manufacture of engineered

flooring, panels and veneer. Another major plant group that produce material that often is called wood are

the palms. Of much less importance are plants such asPandanus, Dracaena and Cordyline. With all this material,

the structure and composition of the structural material is quite different from ordinary wood.

Specific gravity

The single most revealing property of wood as an indicator of wood quality is specific gravity (Timell 1986), [16] as

both pulp yield and lumber strength are determined by it. Specific gravity is the ratio of the mass of a substance to

the mass of an equal volume of water; density is the ratio of a mass of a quantity of a substance to the volume of

that quantity and is expressed in mass per unit substance, e.g., grams per millilitre (g/cm3 or g/ml). The terms are

essentially equivalent as long as the metric system is used. Upon drying, wood shrinks and its density increases.

Minimum values are associated with green (water-saturated) wood and are referred to as basic specific

gravity(Timell 1986).[16]

Wood density

Wood density is determined by multiple growth and physiological factors compounded into “one fairly easily

measured wood characteristic” (Elliott 1970).[17]

Age, diameter, height, radial growth, geographical location, site and growing conditions, silvicultural treatment,

and seed source, all to some degree influence wood density. Variation is to be expected. Within an individual tree,

the variation in wood density is often as great as or even greater than that between different trees (Timell

1986).[16] Variation of specific gravity within the bole of a tree can occur in either the horizontal or vertical direction.

Hard and soft woods

It is common to classify wood as either softwood or hardwood. The wood from conifers (e.g. pine) is called

softwood, and the wood from dicotyledons (usually broad-leaved trees, e.g. oak) is called hardwood. These

names are a bit misleading, as hardwoods are not necessarily hard, and softwoods are not necessarily soft. The

well-known balsa (a hardwood) is actually softer than any commercial softwood. Conversely, some softwoods

(e.g. yew) are harder than many hardwoods.

There is a strong relationship between the properties of wood and the properties of the particular tree that yielded

it. The density of wood varies with species. The density of a wood correlates with its strength (mechanical

properties). For example, mahogany is a medium-dense hardwood that is excellent for fine furniture crafting,

whereas balsa is light, making it useful for model building. One of the densest woods is black ironwood.

Chemistry of wood

Chemical structure of lignin, which comprises approximately 30% of wood and is responsible for many of its properties.

The chemical composition of wood varies from species to species, but is approximately 50% carbon, 42% oxygen,

6% hydrogen, 1% nitrogen, and 1% other elements (mainly calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium,iron,

and manganese) by weight.[18] Wood also contains sulfur, chlorine, silicon, phosphorus, and other elements in

small quantity.

Aside from water, wood has three main components. Cellulose, a crystalline polymer derived from glucose,

constitutes about 41–43%. Next in abundance is hemicellulose, which is around 20% in deciduous trees but near

30% in conifers. It is mainly five-carbon sugars that are linked in an irregular manner, in contrast to the cellulose.

Lignin is the third component at around 27% in coniferous wood vs. 23% in deciduous trees. Lignin confers the

hydrophobic properties reflecting the fact that it is based on aromatic rings. These three components are

interwoven, and direct covalent linkages exist between the lignin and the hemicellulose. A major focus of the

paper industry is the separation of the lignin from the cellulose, from which paper is made.

In chemical terms, the difference between hardwood and softwood is reflected in the composition of the

constituent lignin. Hardwood lignin is primarily derived from sinapyl alcohol and coniferyl alcohol. Softwood lignin

is mainly derived from coniferyl alcohol.[19]

Extractives

Aside from the lignocellulose, wood consists of a variety of low molecular weight organic compounds,

called extractives. The wood extractives are fatty acids, resin acids, waxes and terpenes.[20] For example, rosin is

exuded by conifers as protection from insects. The extraction of these organic materials from wood providestall

oil, turpentine, and rosin.[21]

Uses Fuel

Wood has a long history of being used as fuel, which continues to this day, mostly in rural areas of the world.

Hardwood is preferred over softwood because it creates less smoke and burns longer. Adding a woodstove or

fireplace to a home is often felt to add ambiance and warmth.

Wood fuel (or fuelwood) is a fuel, such as firewood, charcoal, chips, sheets, pellets, and sawdust. The particular form used

depends upon factors such as source, quantity, quality and application. In many areas, wood is the most easily available

form of fuel, requiring no tools in the case of picking up dead wood, or few tools, although as in any industry, specialized

tools, such as skidders and hydraulic wood splitters, have been developed to mechanize production. Sawmillwaste and

construction industry by-products also include various forms of lumber tailings.

The discovery of how to make fire for the purpose of burning wood is regarded as one of humanity's most important

advances. The use of wood as a fuel source for heating is much older than civilization and is assumed to have been used

by Neanderthals. Today, burning of wood is the largest use of energy derived from a solid fuel biomass. Wood fuel can be

used for cooking and heating, and occasionally for fueling steam engines and steam turbines that generate electricity. Wood

may be used indoors in a furnace, stove, or fireplace, or outdoors in a furnace, campfire, or bonfire.

Historical development

Campfires have been used for ages: fires are integral to humanity.

Charcoal, a derivative of wood, was traditionally an important fuel inironmaking and other processes

Wood has been used as fuel for millennia. Historically, it was limited in use only by the distribution of technology required to

make a spark. Heat derived from wood is still common throughout much of the world. Early examples included a fire

constructed inside a tent. Fires were constructed on the ground, and a smoke hole in the top of the tent allowed the smoke

to escape by convection.

In permanent structures and in caves, hearths were constructed or established—surfaces of stone or another

noncombustible material upon which a fire could be built. Smoke escaped through a smoke hole in the roof.

In contrast to civilizations in relatively arid regions (such as Mesopotamia and Egypt), the Greeks, Romans, Celts, Britons,

and Gauls all had access to forests suitable for using as fuel. Over the centuries there was a partial deforestation of climax

forests and the evolution of the remainder to coppice with standards woodland as the primary source of wood fuel. These

woodlands involved a continuous cycle of new stems harvested from old stumps, on rotations between seven and thirty

years. One of the earliest printed books on woodland management, in English, was John Evelyn's "Sylva, or a discourse on

forest trees" (1664) advising landowners on the proper management of forest estates. H.L.Edlin, in "Woodland Crafts in

Britain", 1949 outlines the extraordinary techniques employed, and range of wood products that have been produced from

these managed forests since pre-Roman times. And throughout this time the preferred form of wood fuel was the branches

of cut coppice stems bundled into faggots. Larger, bent or deformed stems that were of no other use to the woodland

craftsmen were converted to charcoal.

As with most of Europe, these managed woodlands continued to supply their markets right up to the end of World War two.

Since then much of these woodlands have been converted to broadscale agriculture. Total demand for fuel increased

considerably with the industrial revolution but most of this increased demand was met by the new fuel source coal, which

was more compact and more suited to the larger scale of the new industries.

During the Edo period of Japan, wood was used for many purposes, and the consumption of wood led Japan to develop

a forest management policy during that era.[1] Demand for timber resources was on the rise not only for fuel, but also for

construction of ships and buildings, and consequently deforestation was widespread. As a result, forest fires occurred, along

with floods and soil erosion. Around 1666, the shogun made it a policy to reduce logging and increase the planting of trees.

This policy decreed that only the shogun, and/or a daimyo, could authorize the use of wood. By the 18th century, Japan had

developed detailed scientific knowledge about silviculture and plantation forestry.

Fireplaces and stoves

The development of the chimney and the fireplace allowed for more effective exhaustion of the smoke. Masonry heatersor

stoves went a step further by capturing much of the heat of the fire and exhaust in a large thermal mass, becoming much

more efficient than a fireplace alone.

The metal stove was a technological development concurrent with the industrial revolution. Stoves were manufactured or

constructed pieces of equipment that contained the fire on all sides and provided a means for controlling the draft—the

amount of air allowed to reach the fire. Stoves have been made of a variety of materials. Cast iron is among the more

common. Soapstone (talc), tile, and steel have all been used. Metal stoves are often lined with refractory materials such

asfirebrick, since the hottest part of a woodburning fire will burn away steel over the course of several years' use.

The Franklin stove was developed in the United States by Benjamin Franklin. More a manufactured fireplace than a stove, it

had an open front and a heat exchanger in the back that was designed to draw air from the cellar and heat it before

releasing it out the sides. The heat exchanger was never a popular feature and was omitted in later versions. So-called

"Franklin" stoves today are made in a great variety of styles, though none resembles the original design.

The 1800s became the high point of the cast iron stove. Each local foundry would make their own design, and stoves were

built for myriads of purposes—parlour stoves, box stoves, camp stoves, railroad stoves, portable stoves, cooking stoves and

so on. Elaborate nickel and chrome edged models took designs to the edge, with cast ornaments, feet and doors. Wood or

coal could be burnt in the stoves and thus they were popular for over one hundred years. The action of the fire, combined

with the causticity of the ash, ensured that the stove would eventually disintegrate or crack over time. Thus a steady supply

of stoves was needed. The maintenance of stoves, needing to be blacked, their smokiness, and the need to split wood

meant that oil or electric heat found favour.

The airtight stove, originally made of steel, allowed greater control of combustion, being more tightly fitted than other stoves

of the day. Airtight stoves became common in the 19th century.

Use of wood heat declined in popularity with the growing availability of other, less labor-intensive fuels. Wood heat was

gradually replaced by coal and later by fuel oil, natural gas and propane heating except in rural areas with available forests.

After the 1967 Oil Embargo, many people in the United States used wood as fuel for the first time. The EPA provided

information on clean stoves, which burned much more efficiently.[2]

1970s

A brief resurgence in popularity occurred during and after the 1973 energy crisis, when some believed that fossil fuelswould

become so expensive as to preclude their use. A period of innovation followed, with many small manufacturers producing

stoves based on designs old and new. Notable innovations from that era include the Ashley heater, a thermostatically

controlled stove with an optional perforated steel enclosure that prevented accidental contact with hot surfaces. The decade

also saw a number of dual-fuel furnaces and boilers made, which utilized ductwork and piping to deliver heat throughout a

house or other building.

1980s

The growth in popularity of wood heat also led to the development and marketing of a greater variety of equipment for

cutting, splitting and processing firewood. Consumer grade hydraulic log splitters were developed to be powered by

electricity, gasoline, or PTO of farm tractors. In 1987 the US Department of Agriculture published a method for producing kiln

dried firewood, on the basis that better heat output and increased combustion efficiency can be achieved with logs

containing lower moisture content.[3]

The magazine "Wood Burning Quarterly" was published for several years before changing its name to "Home Energy

Digest" and, subsequently, disappearing.

Today

A wood pellet stove

A pellet stove is an appliance that burns compressed wood or biomass pellets. Wood heat continues to be used in areas

where firewood is abundant. For serious attempts at heating, rather than mere ambience (open fireplaces), stoves, fireplace

inserts, and furnaces are most commonly used today. In rural, forested parts of the U.S., freestanding boilers are

increasingly common. They are installed outdoors, some distance from the house, and connected to a heat exchanger in the

house using underground piping. The mess of wood, bark, smoke, and ashes is kept outside and the risk of fire is reduced.

The boilers are large enough to hold a fire all night, and can burn larger pieces of wood, so that less cutting and splitting is

required. There is no need to retrofit a chimney in the house. However, outdoor wood boilers emit more wood smoke and

associated pollutants than other wood-burning appliances. This is due to design characteristics such as the water-filled

jacket surrounding the firebox, which acts to cool the fire and leads to incomplete combustion. Outdoor wood boilers also

typically have short stack heights in comparison to other wood-burning appliances, contributing to ambient levels of

particulates at ground level. An alternative that is increasing in popularity are wood gasification boilers, which burn wood at

very high efficiencies (85-91%) and can be placed indoors or in an outbuilding. There are plenty of ways to process wood

fuel and the inventions today are maximizing by the minute.

Wood is still used today for cooking in many places, either in a stove or an open fire. It is also used as a fuel in many

industrial processes, including smoking meat and making maple syrup.

As a sustainable energy source, wood fuel also remains viable for generating electricity in areas with easy access to forest

products and by-products.

Measurement of firewood

In the metric system, firewood is normally sold by the cubic metre or stere (1 m³ = ~0.276 cords).

In the United States and Canada, firewood is usually sold by the cord, 128 ft³ (3.62 m³), corresponding to a woodpile 8 ft

wide × 4 ft high of 4 ft-long logs. The cord is legally defined by statute in most U.S. states. A "thrown cord" is firewood that

has not been stacked and is defined as 4 ft wide x 4 ft tall x 10 ft long. The additional volume is to make it equivalent to a

standard stacked cord, where there is less void space. It is also common to see wood sold by the "face cord", which is

usually not legally defined, and varies from one area to another. For example, in one state a pile of wood 8 feet wide × 4 feet

high of 16"-long logs will often be sold as a "face cord", though its volume is only one-third of a cord. In another state, or

even another area of the same state, the volume of a face cord may be considerably different. Hence, it is risky to buy wood

sold in this manner, as the transaction is not based on a legally enforceable unit of measure.

In Australia, it is normally sold by the tonne.

Energy content

A common hardwood, red oak, has an energy content (Heat value) of 14.9 megajoules per kilogram (6,388 BTU per pound),

and 10.4 megajoules recoverable if burned at 70% efficiency.[4]

The Sustainable Energy Development Office (SEDO), part of the Government of Western Australia states that the energy

According to The Bioenergy Knowledge Centre, the energy content of wood is more closely related to its moisture content

than its species. The energy content improves as moisture content decreases. [6]

In 2008, wood for fuel cost $15.15 per 1 million BTUs (0.041 EUR per kWh).

Combustion by-products

As with any fire, burning wood fuel creates numerous by-products, some of which may be useful (heat and steam), and

others that are undesirable, irritating or dangerous.

One by-product of wood burning is wood ash, which in moderate amounts is a fertilizer (mainly potash), contributing

minerals, but is strongly alkaline as it contains potassium hydroxide[8] (lye). Wood ash can also be used to manufacturesoap.

Smoke, containing water vapor, carbon dioxide and other chemicals and aerosol particulates, including caustic alkali fly ash,

which can be an irritating (and potentially dangerous) by-product of partially burnt wood fuel. A major component of wood

smoke is fine particles that may account for a large portion of particulate air pollution in some regions. During cooler months,

wood heating accounts for as much as 60% of fine particles in Melbourne, Australia.[9]

Slow combustion stoves increase efficiency of wood heaters burning logs, but also increase particulate production. Low

pollution/slow combustion stoves are a current area of research. [citation needed] An alternative approach is to use pyrolysis to

produce several useful biochemical byproducts, and clean burning charcoal, or to burn fuel extremely quickly inside a large

thermal mass, such as a masonry heater. This has the effect of allowing the fuel to burn completely without producing

particulates while maintaining the efficiency of the system. [citation needed]

In some of the most efficient burners, the temperature of the smoke is raised to a much higher temperature where the

smoke will itself burn (e.g. 609 °C[10] for igniting carbon monoxide gas). This may result in significant reduction of smoke

hazards while also providing additional heat from the process. By using a catalytic converter, the temperature for obtaining

cleaner smoke can be reduced. Some U.S. jurisdictions prohibit sale or installation of stoves that do not incorporate catalyt ic

converters.[citation needed]

Combustion by-product effects on human health

Depending on population density, topography, climatic conditions and combustion equipment used, wood heating may

substantially contribute to air pollution, particularly particulates. The conditions in which wood is burnt will greatly influence

the content of the emission.[citation needed] Particulate air pollution can contribute to human health problems and increased hospital

admissions for asthma & heart diseases.[9]

The technique of compressing wood pulp into pellets or artificial logs can reduce emissions. The combustion is cleaner, and

the increased wood density and reduced water content can eliminate some of the transport bulk. The fossil energy

consumed in transport is reduced and represents a small fraction of the fossil fuel consumed in producing and distributing

heating oil or gas.[11]

Wood combustion products can include toxic and carcinogenic substances. Generally, the heartwood of a tree contains the

highest amounts of toxic substances, but precautions should be taken if one is burning wood of an unknown nature, since

some trees' woodsmoke can be highly toxic.

Harvesting operations

Much wood fuel comes from native forests around the world. Plantation wood is rarely used for firewood, as it is more

valuable as timber or wood pulp, however, some wood fuel is gathered from trees planted amongst crops, also known

as agroforestry.[13] The collection or harvesting of this wood can have serious environmental implications for the collection

area. The concerns are often specific to the particular area, but can include all the problems that regular loggingcreate. The

heavy removal of wood from forests can cause habitat destruction and soil erosion. However, in many countries, for

example in Europe and Canada, the forest residues are being collected and turned into useful wood fuels with minimal

impact on the environment. Consideration is given to soil nutrition as well as erosion. The environmental impact of using

wood as a fuel depends on how it is burnt. Higher temperatures result in more complete combustion and less noxious gases

as a result of pyrolysis. Some may regard the burning of wood from a sustainable source as carbon-neutral. A tree, over the

course of its lifetime, absorbs as much carbon (or carbon dioxide) as it releases when burnt.

Some firewood is harvested in "woodlots" managed for that purpose, but in heavily wooded areas it is more often harvested

as a byproduct of natural forests. Deadfall that has not started to rot is preferred, since it is already partly seasoned.

Standing dead timber is considered better still, as it is both seasoned, and has less rot. Harvesting this form of timber

reduces the speed and intensity of bushfires. Harvesting timber for firewood is normally carried out by hand withchainsaws.

Thus, longer pieces - requiring less manual labor, and less chainsaw fuel - are less expensive and only limited by the size of

their firebox. Prices also vary considerably with the distance from wood lots, and quality of the wood. Firewood usually

relates to timber or trees unsuitable for building or construction. Firewood is a renewable resource provided the consumption

rate is controlled to sustainable levels. The shortage of suitable firewood in some places has seen local populations

damaging huge tracts of bush possibly leading to further desertification.

Greenhouse gases

Wood burning creates more atmospheric CO2 than biodegradation of wood in a forest (in a given period of time) because by

the time the bark of a dead tree has rotted, the log has already been occupied by other plants and micro-organisms which

continue to sequester the CO2 by integrating the hydrocarbons of the wood into their own life cycle. Wood harvesting and

transport operations produce varying degrees of greenhouse gas pollution. Inefficient and incomplete combustion of wood

can result in elevated levels of greenhouse gases other than CO2, which may result in positive emissions where the

byproducts have greater Carbon dioxide equivalent values.[14] In an attempt to provide quantitative information about the

relative output of CO2 to produce electricity of domestic heating, the United Kingdom Department of Energy and Climate

Change (DECC) has published a comprehensive model comparing the burning of wood (wood chip) and other fuels, based

on 33 scenarios.[15] The model's output is kilogram of CO2 produced per Megawatt hour of delivered energy. Scenario 33 for

example, which concerns the production of heat from wood chips produced from UK small roundwood produced from

bringing neglected broadleaf forests back into production, shows that burning oil releases 377 kg of CO2 while burning

woodchip releases 1501 kg of CO2 per MW h delivered energy.

The intentional and controlled charring of wood and its incorporation into the soil is an effective method for carbon

sequestration as well as an important technique to improve soil conditions for agriculture, particularly in heavily forested

regions. It forms the basis of the rich soils known as Terra preta.

Regulation and Legislation

The environmental impact of burning wood fuel is debatable. Several cities have moved towards setting standards of use

and/or bans of wood burning fireplaces. For example, the city of Montréal, Québec passed a resolution to ban wood

fireplace installation in new construction. However many wood burning advocates claim that properly harvested wood is

carbon-neutral, therefore off-setting the negative impact of by-product particles given off during the burning process. In the

context of forest wildfires, wood removed from the forest setting for use as wood fuel can reduce overall emissions by

decreasing the quantity of open burned wood and the severity of the burn while combusting the remaining material under

regulated conditions.

Usage

Some European countries produce a significant fraction of their electricity needs from wood or wood wastes. In

Scandinavian countries the costs of manual labor to process firewood is very high. Therefore, it is common to import

firewood from countries with cheap labor and natural resources. [citation needed] The main exporters to Scandinavia are theBaltic

countries (Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia). In Finland, there is a growing interest in using wood waste as fuel for home and

industrial heating, in the form of compacted pellets.

In the United States, wood fuel is the second-leading form of renewable energy (behind hydro-electric)

Australia

About 1.5 million households in Australia use firewood as the main form of domestic heating. [17] As of 1995, approximately

1.85 million cubic metres of firewood (1m³ equals approximately one car trailer load) was used in Victoria annually, with half

being consumed in Melbourne.[18] This amount is comparable to the wood consumed by all of Victoria’s sawlog and pulplog

forestry operations (1.9 million m³).[citation needed]

Species used as sources of firewood include:

Red Gum, from forests along the Murray River (the Mid-Murray Forest Management Area, including the Barmah and

Gunbower forests, provides about 80% of Victoria’s red gum timber). [19]

Sugar gum, a wood with high thermal efficiency that usually comes from small plantations.[citation needed]

Jarrah, in the Southwest of Western Australia. It generates a greater heat than most other available woods and is

usually sold by the tonne.

Europe

In 2014, the construction of the biggest pellet plant in the Baltic region was started in Võrumaa, Sõmerpalu, with an

expected output of 110,000 tons of pellet / year. Different types of wood will be used in the process of pellet making

(firewood, woodchips, shavings). The Warmeston OÜ plant started its activity by the end of 2014. [20][21] In 2013, the main

pellet consumers in Europe were the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany and Belgium, as U.E.'s annual

report on biofuels states. In Denmark and Sweden, pellets are used by power plants, households and medium scale

consumers for district heating, compared to Austria and Italy, where pellets are mainly used as small - scale private

residential and industrial boilers for heating.[22]

Haiti

A lot of wood is used in Haiti as a source of fuel for heating homes and making fires.

Construction

The Saitta House, Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, New York built in 1899 is made of and decorated in wood.[22]

Wood has been an important construction material since humans began building shelters, houses and boats.

Nearly all boats were made out of wood until the late 19th century, and wood remains in common use today in

boat construction. Elm in particular was used for this purpose as it resisted decay as long as it was kept wet (it

also served for water pipe before the advent of more modern plumbing).

Wood to be used for construction work is commonly known as lumber in North America.

Elsewhere, lumber usually refers to felled trees, and the word for sawn planks ready for use is timber. In Medieval

Europe oak was the wood of choice for all wood construction, including beams, walls, doors, and floors. Today a

wider variety of woods is used: solid wood doors are often made from poplar, small-knotted pine, and Douglas fir.

The churches of Kizhi, Russia are among a handful of World Heritage Sites built entirely of wood, without metal joints. See Kizhi

New domestic housing in many parts of the world today is commonly made from timber-framed

construction. Engineered wood products are becoming a bigger part of the construction industry. They may be

used in both residential and commercial buildings as structural and aesthetic materials.

In buildings made of other materials, wood will still be found as a supporting material, especially in roof

construction, in interior doors and their frames, and as exterior cladding.

Wood is also commonly used as shuttering material to form the mould into which concrete is poured

during reinforced concrete construction.

Wood flooring

Wood can be cut into straight planks and made into a wood flooring.

Engineered wood

Engineered wood products, glued building products "engineered" for application-specific performance

requirements, are often used in construction and industrial applications. Glued engineered wood products are

manufactured by bonding together wood strands, veneers, lumber or other forms of wood fiber with glue to form a

larger, more efficient composite structural unit.[23]

These products include glued laminated timber (glulam), wood structural panels (including plywood, oriented

strand boardand composite panels), laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and other structural composite lumber (SCL)

products, parallel strand lumber, and I-joists.[23] Approximately 100 million cubic meters of wood was consumed for

this purpose in 1991.[3]The trends suggest that particle board and fiber board will overtake plywood.

Wood unsuitable for construction in its native form may be broken down mechanically (into fibers or chips) or

chemically (into cellulose) and used as a raw material for other building materials, such as engineered wood, as

well as chipboard, hardboard, and medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Such wood derivatives are widely used:

wood fibers are an important component of most paper, and cellulose is used as a component of some synthetic

materials. Wood derivatives can also be used for kinds of flooring, for example laminate flooring.

Furniture and utensils

Wood has always been used extensively for furniture, such as chairs and beds. It is also used for tool handles and

cutlery, such as chopsticks, toothpicks, and other utensils, like the wooden spoon.

Next generation wood products

Further developments include new lignin glue applications, recyclable food packaging, rubber tire replacement

applications, anti-bacterial medical agents, and high strength fabrics or composites As scientists and engineers

further learn and develop new techniques to extract various components from wood, or alternatively to modify

wood, for example by adding components to wood, new more advanced products will appear on the marketplace.

Moisture content electronic monitoring can also enhance next generation wood protection.

In the arts

Stringed instrument bows are often made from brazilwood (also called pernambuco).

Wood has long been used as an artistic medium. It has been used to make sculptures and carvings for millennia.

Examples include the totem poles carved by North American indigenous people from conifer trunks, often Western

Red Cedar (Thuja plicata), and the Millennium clock tower,[26] now housed in the National Museum of

Scotland in Edinburgh. It is also used in woodcut printmaking, and for engraving.

Certain types of musical instruments, such as those of the violin family, the guitar, the clarinet and recorder,

the xylophone, and the marimba, are traditionally made mostly or entirely of wood. The choice of wood may make

a significant difference to the tone and resonant qualities of the instrument, and tonewoods have widely differing

properties, ranging from the hard and dense african blackwood (used for the bodies of clarinets) to the light but

resonant European spruce (Picea abies), which is traditionally used for the soundboards of violins. The most

valuable tonewoods, such as the ripple sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), used for the backs of violins, combine

acoustic properties with decorative color and grain which enhance the appearance of the finished instrument.

Despite their collective name, not all woodwind instruments are made entirely of wood. The reeds used to play

them, however, are usually made from Arundo donax, a type of monocot cane plant.

Sports and recreational equipment

Many types of sports equipment are made of wood, or were constructed of wood in the past. For example, cricket

bats are typically made of white willow. The baseball bats which are legal for use in Major League Baseball are

frequently made ofash wood or hickory, and in recent years have been constructed from maple even though that

wood is somewhat more fragile. NBA courts have been traditionally made out of parquetry.

Many other types of sports and recreation equipment, such as skis, ice hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks and archery

bows, were commonly made of wood in the past, but have since been replaced with more modern materials such

as aluminium, fiberglass, carbon fiber, titanium, and composite materials. One noteworthy example of this trend is

the golf club commonly known as the wood, the head of which was traditionally made of persimmon wood in the

early days of the game of golf, but is now generally made of synthetic materials.

Bacterial degradation

Little is known about the bacteria that degrade cellulose. Symbiotic bacteria in Xylophaga may play a role in the

degradation of sunken wood; while bacteria such as Alphaproteobacteria, Flavobacteria, Actinobacteria,

Clostridia, and Bacteroidetes have been detected in wood submerged over a year. [27]

Combustion

The burning of wood is currently the largest use of energy derived from a solid fuel biomass. Wood fuel may be available

as firewood (e.g. logs, bolts, blocks),charcoal, chips, sheets, pellets and sawdust. Wood fuel can be used

for cooking and heating through stoves and fireplaces, and occasionally for fueling steam engines and

steam turbines that generate electricity. From many centuries many types of traditional ovens were used in order to benefit

from the heat generated by wood combustion. Now, more efficient and clean solutions have been developed:

advanced fireplaces (with heat exchangers), wood-fired ovens, wood-burning stoves and pellet stoves, that are able to filter

and separate pollutants (centrifuging ashes with rotative filters), thus eliminating many emissions, also allowing to recover a

higher quantity of heat that escaped with the chimney fumes.

Mean energy density of Wood, was calculated at around 6–17 Megajoule/Kilogram, depending on species and moisture

content.

Combustion of wood is, however, linked to the production of micro-environmental pollutants, as carbon

dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO) (an invisible gas able to provoke irreversible saturation of blood's hemoglobine), as

well as nanoparticles.[25]

In Italy poplar has been proposed as a tree cultivated to be transformed into biofuels, because of the excellent ratio of

energy extracted from its wood because of poplar's fast growing and capture of atmospheric carbon dioxide to the small

amount of energy needed to cultivate, cut and transport the trees. Populus x canadensis 'I-214', grows so fast that is able to

reach 14 inches (36 cm) in diameter and heights of 100 feet (30 m) in ten years.

Charcoal

Charcoal is the dark grey residue consisting of impure carbon obtained by removing water and other volatile constituents

from animal and vegetation substances. Charcoal is usually produced by slow pyrolysis, the heating of wood or other

substances in the absence of oxygen. Charcoal can then be used as a fuel with a higher combustion temperature.

Wood gasogen

Wood gas generator (gasogen): is a bulky and heavy device (but technically simple) that transforms burning wood in a mix

of molecular hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), molecular nitrogen (N2) and water vapor (H2O).

This gas mixture, known as "wood gas", "poor gas" or "syngas" is obtained after the combustion of dry wood in a reductive

environment (low in oxygen) with a limited amount of atmospheric air, at temperatures of 900° Celsius, and can fuel

an internal combustion engine.[26]

In the time between World War I and World War II included, because of the lack of oil, in many countries,

likeItaly, France, Great Britain and Sweden, several gasoline-powered cars were modified, with the addition of awood gas

generator (a "gasogen"), a device powered by wood, coal, or burnable waste, able to produce (and purify) gas that

immediately, in the same vehicle, could power a slightly modified ICE engine of a standard car (low-compression

engine). Carburetor had to be changed with an air-gas mixer). There were several setbacks, as the great reduction of

maximum speed and the need to drive using low gears and wisely dosing the amount of air. In modern cars, modified with a

wood gas generator, gas emissions (CO, CO2 and NOx) are lower to those of the same vehicle running with gasoline

(keeping the same catalytic converter).

Methanol

Methanol (the simplest alcohol) behaves as a liquid at 25 °C, is toxic and corrosive, and in organic chemistrybasic books is

often called "the spirit of wood", since it can be obtained from wood fermentation. Rarely, when unwise wine-makers mix

small chunks of wood and leaves with grapes, methanol can be found as a pollutant of the blend of water, ethanol and other

substances derived from grape's fermentation.

The best way to obtain methanol from wood is through syngas (CO, CO2, H2) produced by the anhydrous pyrolysis of wood,

a method discovered by ancient Egyptians.

Methanol can be used as an oxygen-rich additive for gasoline. However, it is usually much cheaper to produce methanol

from methane or from syngas. Methanol is the most important base material for industrial chemistry, where it is often used to

make more complex molecules through reactions of halogenation and chemical addition reaction.

Gas turbine

The American M1 Abrams main battle tank is powered by a gas turbine of 1,500 hp (1,100 kW),[27] that it is able to function

also with a mix at 50% of wood powder and biodiesel, diesel fuel or kerosene. Its advantages over turbo-diesel engine, are

the small size and light weight, the lack of a radiator (which gives an advantage against the effect of gun and cannon shots

and missile strikes suffered in battle). A setback is the high fuel consumption, since the turbine engine has not the ability to

work at a low revolutions per minute rate, much lower than ideal, and during the march this engine consumes twice as much

fuel as a modern turbo-diesel engine with intercooler and direct injection.

Construction

Wood is relatively light in weight, because its specific weight is less than 500 kg/m³, this is an advantage, when compared

against 2,000-2,500 kg/m³ for armed concrete or 7,800 kg/m³ for steel.

Wood is strong, because the efficiency of wood for structural purposes has qualities that are similar to steel.

Bridges, levees, microhydro, piers

Wood is used to build bridges (as the Magere bridge in Amsterdam), as well as water and air mills,

and microhydro generators for electricity.

Housing

Hardwood is used as a material in wooden houses, and other structures with a broad range of dimensions. In traditional

homes wood is preferred for ceilings,doors, floorings and windows. Wooden frames were traditionally used for home

ceilings, but they risk collapse during fires.

The development of energy efficient houses including the "passive house" has revamped the importance of wood in

construction, because wood provides acoustic and thermal insulation, with much better results than concrete.

Earthquake resistant buildings

In Japan, ancient buildings, of relatively high elevation, like pagodas, historically had shown to be able to

resist earthquakes of high intensity, thanks to the traditional building techniques, employing elastic joints, and to the

excellent ability of wooden frames to elastically deform and absorb severe accelerations andcompressive shocks.

In 2006, Italian scientists from CNR patented [28] a building system that they called "SOFIE",[29] a seven-storey wooden

building, 24 meters high, built by the "Istituto per la valorizzazione del legno e delle specie arboree" (Ivalsa) of San Michele

all'Adige. In 2007 it was tested with the hardest Japanese antiseismic test for civil structures: the simulation of Kobe's

earthquake (7,2 Richter scale), with the building placed over an enormous oscillating platform belonging to the NIED-

Institute, located in Tsukuba science park, near the city of Miki in Japan. This Italian project, employed very thin and flexible

panels in glued laminated timber, and according to CNR researchers could brought to the construction of much more safe

houses in seismic areas.[30]

Shipbuilding

One of the most enduring matherials is the lumber from virginian southern live oak and white oak, specially live oak is 60%

stronger than white oak, more resistant to moisture, and as example is the main component in the structure of battle

ship USS Constitution, the world's oldest commissioned naval vessel afloat (Launched in 1797). [31]

History of crisis in wood economies Classical Greece

One of the most famous crisis of a wood based economy is what happened in Classical Greece, where trees began to

disappear specially in the areas of Attica,Boeotia and Peloponnesus where indiscriminate cutting of trees for several uses,

associated to drought and wildfires led to a severe lack of timber in order to build lances, shields, ships, etc. and to a slow

but progressive weakening in military and naval power of the peninsular kingdoms in Greece, that were overwhelmed

byEpirus and by the Kingdom of Macedon, much more fertile lands because of their rainy winters. This process arrived to

the apex with the conquest of Greece byPhillip II of Macedon.

The secret weapon of the Sarissaphoros soldiers (supported by peltast javelineers), commanded by Philipp II in the Battle of

Chaeronea (338 BC) and in those that followed fought by Alexander the Great (which brought to the conquest of Lesser

Asia, Babylon, Persia and Egypt), was the sarissa, a type of pike, longer and stronger (5–7 m.) than the other Greek lances,

obtained from the heavy and strong cornel wood.[32]

Rapa Nui

Rapa Nui, best known as "Easter Island", is a typical example of malthusianism,[33] specifically how the exponential growth of

a populace leads to the end of arenewable resource. At a certain point, the compelling societal need forces exploitation of

the resource above and beyond the resource's natural rate of renewal.

It has been calculated [34] that after the year 1000, around 10 million palmtrees were cut in Rapa Nui, resulting in

the erosion of the fertile land, and eventually to adesertification around the 15th century. (This deforestation may have also

been aggravated and/or caused by a rat infestation[35]). This provoked a population reduction from 15,000 to 2,500

individuals. Without palmtree wood, no boats, or lances could be constructed. Without palm fibers, construction of ropes and

fishing nets halted. This led to a decrease in the local fish harvest, which in turn led to a decrease in the quantity of dietary

protein available to the island's inhabitants. At the end, the society became an easy prey for hunger and civil war. From 1600

to 1700, the people became superstitious in a fanatical way. In the last moments, there was a disintegration of society and

total chaos. The destruction of the traditional symbols followed, leading to the eventual extinction of

theMoais civilization and culture, even if there was not any external human enemy.
