The History of Music Videos
ACDC-Back in Black/Young Guns-Towers
By Zak, Austin and Liam
Representation of the Artists
• ACDC: They merely present themselves with their own look, they don’t try and sell a different image.
• Young Guns: Through the choice in costume and location, it seems as though they are trying to present an edgy persona.
• The camerawork mostly consists of slow, handheld pans, as well as shots completely focused on one member during a solo.
• The takes in the video are very long, contrasting with the usual idea of fast edits in music videos. The first shot in the video lasts 30 seconds, and tracks around the entire band.
• They keep one location throughout the whole video, as well as the costumes.

• The video consists around one static shot of a hotel room.• The key element to the video is the editing. The video is essentially based
around fast jump cuts, that keeps in time with the music.
• Again the location is kept pretty much the same throughout the video, other than a few shots in different areas of the hotel and a desert at the end.
• The costumes and location are taking a deliberate dark style, to try and present themselves in a certain way.
Which elements are pushed to the front?
• Both videos seem to be selling the attitude of the bands.
• ACDC present the idea that they don’t care how they are shown.
• Young Guns want to be viewed as a dark and edgy band.
How has the presentation ofgenre elements changed?
• Since ACDC the focus seems to be more on an ensemble than on individual members.
• The speed of editing seems to have progressed, with faster cuts becoming the norm.
• Rock music seems to have taken a deliberate style rather than the more informal style of ACDC.
