I N G R E D E R E U T P R O F I C I A S WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO? It’s now the start of October and what a great first few weeks it has been! Everyone has been participating in all sorts of mind-boggling science experiments, sporting enterprises and a mega charity extravaganza. Do you remember having a lava lamp “back in the day”? Our students have made their very own lava lamps, followed by learning all about slime. Lovely. The lesson quickly took a messy turn, but we wouldn’t have it any other way - science should be hands-on and fun! The first cycle of GAP lessons has been completed, and we can confirm it was an almost unanimous vote that ‘smart appearance’ and ‘smart clever’ are just as important as each other. One group gave a compelling argument that “you make progress with your brain not with your clothing”. The next subject to tackle is global warming - Greta Thunberg watch out... Speaking of the environment, well done to our students who recently carried out a beach clean with The National Trust. Every piece of litter was recorded and it was found that a staggering 74.4% collected was plastic/polystyrene. This data will be added to Great British Beach survey and hopefully next time there will be much less waste. Recently, Chris Robson very kindly took our Year 7s over to The Priory to learn about the St Bees Man, as part of their Medieval History lessons. For those who don’t know about this gruesome tale, during an archaeological dig a lead coffin and the body of a man believed to be a medieval knight was discovered (to the surprise of everyone involved). Our students were told the incredible story and even had the chance to hold some of the artefacts and see photographs from the archaeological dig. We are also proud to announce that we have raised over £390 for Macmillan through our ‘Afternoon Tea’ and non- uniform day (for the students), while the staff had a taste of life back at school with their very own uniform for the day! WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?It’s now the start of October and what a great first few weeks it has been!

The first cycle of GAP lessons has been completed, and we can confirm it was an almost unanimous vote that ‘smart

appearance’ and ‘smart clever’ are just as important as each other.

Our students were told the incredible story

and even had the chance to hold some of the artefacts and see photographs from the archaeological dig.

We are also proud to announce that we have raised over £390 for Macmillan through our ‘Afternoon Tea’ and non-uniform day (for the students), while the staff had a taste of life back at school with their very own uniform for the day!

SPOTLIGHT ON... OUR STAFFNearly every school or

business you talk to will tell you the same thing “we have the best staff!” It’s no different here at St Bees. Our staff members are brilliant at what they do; whether it is our Headmaster, Mr Sinnett, who has years of experience in international education; or our Commercial Manager, Ann Stott, and her team who create incredible short course programmes year round.

Being a relatively small team means each

and every one of us has to be flexible to take on new challenges. The School is growing and we have been really excited to welcome new members to the team in all areas.

The new members of the School family will be introduced in upcoming newsletters and we will share updates from the staff you have heard from in previous newsletters.

For now, though, you are invited to play a game of St Bees School ‘Guess Who?’...

1. This member of staff has recently been crowned the Cumbria Doubles Champion for badminton. They also reached the semi-finals in the mixed badminton doubles.

2. This member of staff likes to cycle... unsurprising considering their recent mammoth effort to cycle for charity from Hong Kong to Cambodia.

3. This staff member made their St Bees stage debut at a charity event in the village during the summer. They have a background in international education and also lead our GAP programmes.

4. This member of staff is a member of a rock choir! Sometimes you might see them performing concerts to raise money for local and national charities.

BOARDING. IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?How do you see boarding? Is it a “home from home”, or is it a 24 hour international community?

Boarding has many strengths, and there was no one better to write our latest blog than our Assistant Head, Laurence Gribble who has experienced boarding at St Bees School for himself.

It is the day after the students sleepover in School House... Based on the laughter before they even arrived at School, it sounded like fun! Keep an eye on social media to see how they got on.

Guess Who?

If you think you can correctly identify the staff members above, send your answers to [email protected] or via social media before Friday 11th October and

the correct answers will receive their very own St Bees School bumble bee.?
