Register for School Today! Registration for the 2017-18 academic year is now open. All parents should have received an e-mail about this on Monday, April 17th. If you did not receive the email, please first check your SPAM Folder. If you do not see the e-mail in your SPAM folder, then please contact the front office because we do not have your information on file. It is extremely important that all parents complete their student's registration prior to the May 15 deadline. The directions needed to complete online registration are provided in the e-mail, as well as information on associated fees. Fees can be paid by either check or by credit card through the District 34 website. Registration is not considered complete until fees are paid. By registering your child, you are helping the school district plan for the correct number of teachers needed next school year. If your child(ren) will not be returning to District 34 next year, please inform the school office of that information as soon as possible.

All Hoffman School students, parents, and family members are invited to attend this especially tasty and fun event! Please come and enjoy an ice cream sundae prepared by members of our Hoffman School staff! We will be having our annual All-School Book Fair at the same time in our gym. Enjoy a special evening with your friends and neighbors, indulge in a delicious ice cream sundae, and pursue the opportunity to buy some great books at our Book Fair. What a great way to spend a nice spring evening!
Classrooms will not be open for viewing. All activities will be held in the gym and near the playground. Hope to see you there!
Welcome Reception for Dr. Dane Delli
Next school year, Glenview District 34 will welcome Dr. Dane Delli as the new superintendent. In honor of this exciting transition, we hope our community will join us for a special welcome reception on the following date and time:

Attea Middle School
The Glenview District 34 Board of Education unanimously approved the hiring of Dr. Delli as the new superintendent during a special meeting on January 12. Although he will not begin in this new role until July 1, we understand the importance in providing Dr. Delli with an opportunity to meet our students, staff and parents and begin to form essential relationships in the community.
The reception will primarily serve as a meet-and-greet opportunity that will also showcase the work of some of our talented student musicians. Please know that you are welcome to join us at any point in the evening. We look forward to seeing many of you there!

Third Grade
The Elements of Art are our ABC’s as we create and learn about the visual world around us. One element is Color. The third grade artists are exploring the warm and cool color families as they learn about the Picasso Sculpture in Chicago. Students are also learning about the element of space as they create underwater environments.
Fourth Grade
In addition to learning about the Makey Makey kit, students are creating a musical instrument that can be colored and played. Their creation will also be copied and used as an adult coloring page at a Cancer treatment center in Glenview. More to come.
Fifth Grade
Yes, it’s that time of year when the 5th grade students focus on their performance. Scenery and props are created in art. Following suit with the urban theme of Stomp, the artists are busy covering our room with graffiti!

Let’s think about how quickly our technology has advanced in just a few years. How are we using technology in the classrooms? Well, Mrs. Schober is heading to Springfield in May with Mrs. Banas and two fifth grade students, Zoe Costianis and Alex Clark. They will present their Art/Music/Technology/Science project to State Senators and Representatives demonstrating how technology is utilized in the classroom and how beneficial it is to the learning environment. Please congratulate Zoe and Alex and give them encouragement before they head to the State Capitol building May 9th.

District 34 Art Show Students work very hard in art, participating, sitting still, taking assessments, and creating wonderful art! May 22nd, students, parents and the public will gather to view the great accomplishments of our talented artists. Keep an eye out for information about this spectacular event showcasing works of art from selected students in all 8 District 34 schools.
Gargoyles These bisque fired menacing creatures are waiting to be painted by their 5th grade creators. The different personalities are intriguing as we try to guess who their designer is.

Students make all of the scenery and props for their production. Graffiti is typically seen on brick walls so we trained some brick layers!

Linda combines her passion for art with her understanding that technology is the language of our youth. In addition to raising three children, she has taught Pre-K through High School giving her breadth of experience dealing with not only content and pedagogy but also social emotional factors that are a crucial element in education.

Amy is the former music teacher at Hoffman. She is
currently the Technology Integration Specialist in district 23.
She has 8 years of experience teaching Pre-K through 5th grade music and has used technology
in her classroom to provide her students with various learning opportunities that challenges
students to think critically, problem solve, and most of all be creative.

Our Story:
About 6 years ago our district became a 1:1 iPad district. It began as a pilot where several classes/grade levels at various buildings had 1:1 iPads for their students. It progressed to all students, teachers and associates in D34 being given an iPad. In addition to Pages, Keynote, GarageBand, Google Apps Suite, we have installed apps like Book Creator, Chatterpix, Doodle Buddy, Frame Artist Pro, Thinglink, Educreations, 30 hands, Popplet, 123D Design and the DoInk for the green screen to encourage creation over consumption. At Hoffman we keep a set of older laptops in order to do Scratch with the MaKey MaKey kits.
When we became a GAFE (Google Apps for Education) district, collaboration increased due to students and teachers being able to access and work on the same docs at the same time.
In the last year, makerspaces have been springing up around the district in various schools. At Hoffman we have green screens set up along with the Doink app on 10 iPads, MaKey MaKey kits, 7 Little Bits sets, and we will soon be getting 10 Kano hand me downs form the middle schools. Each school has different amounts/types of makerspace materials.
In DALFA, our technology committee, we’re currently having discussions around STEM/STEAM and what we want it to look like in D34 and how to move forward with it.
What is MaKey MaKey?
A MaKey MaKey kit is an invention kit that turns everyday objects into touch pads. By using the MaKey MaKey board, alligator clips, the internet (in our project the website Scratch), and everyday objects that conduct a little amount of electricity, students were able to create instruments controlled by the computer keyboard.
Water Piano & Composition
Students were first introduced to the MaKey MAKey kit in music through the water piano. There were 8 different colored cups filled with water each representing 1 note of a C Major scale. When students held the grounding wire and touched their finger to the water it would play that note. Students then learned about the pentatonic scale and ABA form and had to compose their own F Pentatonic composition in ABA form.
Artwork
Each student was given the liberty to develop a 2D instrument portraying any theme/main idea that they desired. There were just two restrictions. One, the instrument could not look like an instrument. Two, they had to incorporate 5 paths of conductivity. The instrument was created using markers, colored pencils, crayons and Ebony graphite pencil as the conductive element.
The Final Project
When students finished their artwork they labeled the 5 starting points (where the graphite was on their artwork) with the notes of the F pentatonic scale (FGACD), and performed their composition on their artwork hooked up to a MaKey MaKey kit. Students videotaped each other using their iPads and submitted their final projects in Schoology.
