THE HOLISTIC CANCERSOLUTIONBy Walter Last

The cause and cure of cancer isbasically unknown, not only inconventional medicine but also innatural medicine. For decades, whileworking as a natural therapist andhealth writer, I continually tried toimprove my understanding of what wasreally going on, and I am confident thatthe relevant pieces of the puzzle have

now fallen into place.

Blocked Energy ProductionThe conventional view is that canceroriginates in the cell nucleus due torandom mutations or damage to thegenetic material from radiation or toxicchemicals. This orthodox model seesthe development of a tumor as a purelylocal event in an otherwise healthy

body. Therefore the aim is to catch it asearly as possible, remove or destroy thetumor, and all should be well.But reality is different. Unbiasedinvestigations show that there is no realdifference in conventionally treated anduntreated cases (1). I suspect thathonest statistics would even showchemotherapy to shorten lives. Whythen do some patients survive

conventional treatment?The answer is that some tumors justhave a tendency to spread and othersremain harmless whether treated oruntreated. Presently the focus is ondetecting very small tumors many ofwhich would never develop into cancer

and form metastases but in statisticsthey are counted as curedcancers. When cancer does spreadthen there is generally no conventionaltreatment that really works. Recognizing

this, statistics are commonly expressedas five-year survival rates. All thisshows that the medical model of canceris either incomplete or wrong.The German cancer researcher Dr PaulGerhard Seeger (2) demonstratedalready in 1938 that in most casescancer starts with the degeneration ofthe cell membranes which in turn leads

to damage of the energy-producingmitochondria embedded in thecytoplasm, the jelly-like outer part of thecell. In the mitochondria food fragmentsare oxidized in a series of enzymaticsteps called the 'respiratory chain'.Seeger showed that in cancer cells thisrespiratory chain was more or lessblocked, especially at the site of theimportant enzymes cytochrome

oxidase. Without it the cell can produceenergy only anaerobically like a fungalcell. This is very inefficient and theresulting overproduction of lactic acidmakes the cell and the whole bodyoveracid.Seeger and others found that cancercells utilize only between 5 and 50% ofthe oxygen of normal cells.

Furthermore, the virulence of cancercells is directly proportional to their lossof oxygen utilization, and with this to thedegree of blockage of the respiratorychain. In 1957 Seeger successfullytransformed normal cells into cancercells within a few days by introducing

chemicals that blocked the respiratorychain.

Further experiments showed thatcancer cells of low virulence could

easily be overcome by the immunesystem but those with high virulenceprevailed and continued to spread.Following this, Seeger made his mostimportant discovery: thousands ofexperiments revealed that certainnutrients, mainly from the vegetablekingdom, could restore cellularrespiration in low-virulence cancer cellsand, with this, transform them back into

normal cells.Seeger's finding that cancer originatesin the cytoplasm and not in the nucleuswas confirmed by otherresearchers. Between 1975 and 1977they repeated an experiment 93 times inwhich they replaced the nucleus of afertilized mouse egg with the nucleus ofa cancer cell. In each case the eggdeveloped into a healthy, cancer-freemouse and even the offspring remainedcancer-free. Similar results wereachieved with frog eggs (2).The Budwig TherapyDr Johanna Budwig (3), a Germanbiochemist and fat researcher,confirmed the work of Seeger on apractical level. In the 1950s shedeveloped a simple paperchromatography test that shows theblocked respiratory chain of cancerpatients as a slow yellow-green spot.By using liberal amounts of high-qualitylinseed or flaxseed oil and the sulfur-amino acids cysteine and methionine,

the yellow-green spot disappeared, therespiratory chain was reactivated,tumors commonly disappeared andcancer patients recovered. The mainfood providing sulfur amino acids was

low-fat quark, a traditional form ofcottage cheese made from fermentedraw milk, and she specified that allfoods must be as natural as possible.In the final stages of oxidative energyproduction electrons derived from foodare being made to flow along a bridgeconsisting of an essential fatty acid(EFA) and a cysteine-containing

molecule to form carbon dioxide andwater. This bridge becomes blocked atthe cytochrome oxidase stage bymetabolic and microbial wastes andtoxins. With this the cell reverts to afungal type of energy production whichis the precondition for the growth of atumor. Repairing this blocked bridgewith a clean cysteine-EFA replacementallows the electrons to flow again and

the cell to revert to normality.The type of metabolic waste thatBudwig found to block the respiratorychain were mainly unbiological fatscontaining trans-fatty acids as fromcommercial polyunsaturated oils,chemically hardened fats such asmargarine and mayonnaise, andsaturated fats from grain-fed animals,

and in addition synthetic anti-oxidantpreservatives added to processed foodto prevent rancidity.

To replace these faulty parts efficiently itis important to provide both ingredientssulfur amino acids and EFAs, inrelatively high amounts at the same

meal without much interference fromother fatty acids, but additional lecithinis beneficial. Methionine, another sulfuramino acid, is also useful in food as itcan be converted to cysteine inside the

body but it is not suitable as a high-dosesupplement.Budwig wrote that beneficial results,such as increased energy, can often beobserved within days or weeks, whiletumors may start shrinking after severalmonths. Furthermore, also worm-likemicrobes (Canceroben) that sheobserved in red blood cells and blood

serum gradually disappeared.But there are also problems with theBudwig therapy that caused me to holdback in the past. The Budwig diet isvery high in milk products, which causedigestive problems or allergic reactionswith many individuals. Also we knownow that milk contains the growth factorIGF-1 which appears to promote tumorgrowth, especially in hormone-sensitivecancers.Furthermore, like Budwig I only regardraw or unheated milk products ashealthy, and the sale of healthy milkproducts is illegal in many highlymedicalized countries suchas Australia and most of the US.Budwig supposedly had a 90% successrate with her therapy but that was with ahigh amount of fermented and raworganic products, and generally withpatients who traditionally used a diethigh in milk products. I am not aware ofthe success rate when usingcommercial non-organic andpasteurized cottage cheese but I

believe that it will be much lower thanBudwigs results.The presence of IGF-1 apparently didnot affect Budwigs results. This means

when the conditions for tumor growthare removed, then IGF-1 is no longer aproblem. It also helps that IGF-1 andlactose remain mainly in the whey, andmay be discarded.Budwig did not seem to pay muchattention to the fact that not only quarkbut also other recommended food itemsin her diet such as buttermilk, fresh rawmilk, fermented sauerkraut, and soaked

grains provide plenty of beneficialbacteria to sanitize the intestines. Iregard this as an essential part of hertherapy.While there are many glowingtestimonials, one story in particularhighlights a serious problem with theBudwig protocol. A US prostate cancerpatient had a personal consultation with

Dr Budwig in 2000 (she died in 2003aged 95). All was well until he had aheart attack six years later. This was notsupposed to happen on the Budwigprogram which this patient still tried tofollow, although with American cottagecheese rather than German quark (4).I believe some flaws in the Budwigapproach contributed to this. While it isa plus in cancer therapy that the Budwigdiet is low in pro-inflammatoryphosphorus, it is rather high in calciumbut low in magnesium. This isproblematic with many conditions andespecially with arteriosclerosis. Alsocontributing to this may have beencalcifying nanobacteria because Budwig

did not have an antimicrobial therapyavailable (5).Furthermore, Budwig discouraged theuse of vitamin E as protection of EFAs

from oxidation. Therefore individualsgenerally had a high level ofunprotected EFAs in the blood. If theythen were exposed to oxidizinginfluences, such as car exhaust, activeor passive smoking, and especiallychlorinated tap water, then that couldcause much internal auto-oxidation.Chlorinated drinking water has beenshown to strongly promote

atherosclerosis and heart attacks (6).To counter these effects I would avoidusing milk, buttermilk and whey asadditions to quark as all of these arehigh in calcium; instead I recommend ahigh level of additional magnesium.Furthermore, I would also squeezenatural vitamin E oil into newly openedbottles of flaxseed oil. Contrary to someexpressed fears natural vitamin E doesnot interfere with the respiratory chain.

Budwig also reported a rather unsettlingfeature of her therapy. She warned thateven after tumors and metastases havedisappeared, if someone starts againhabitually eating processed meat,restaurant food, or other food withpreservatives and syntheticantioxidants, there tends to be a sudden

proliferation of the Canceroben (cancermicrobes). These patients may then diewithin weeks and no amount of cysteineand flaxseed oil will help anymore. Afterabout 5 years it is less dangerous togradually introduce less healthy foods.

This brings us to the role of cancermicrobes which I believe is one of themissing parts in the Budwig therapy.Budwig did not regard the Cancerobenas important in the cause and cure of

cancer but I do.TheCancerMicrobeFrom time to time I found referencesstating that cancerous tumors can bedissolved by infusion of blood fromyoung and healthy individuals, but notwith blood from older individuals or fromanyone with cancer (7). This shows thatcancer has much to do with vitality and

the immune system.Many independent researchers havereported the proliferation of certainpleomorphic (shape-changing) microbesin the blood and tumors of all cancerpatients (8). One of the first was theGerman professor of microbiologyGuenther Enderlein who described in1925 the different stages of a microbe

that is normally present as tiny colloidalprotein units. In various degenerativediseases, especially cancer, theseprotein units grow into cocci and higherbacterial forms and finally into fungi.Before him, in the nineteenth century,the French professor

Antoine Bechamp had alreadydescribed similar microbes and calledthemmicrozymas. In 1890 the Scottishpathologist William Russell alsodiscovered the cancer microbe, and aform of it is still presently known asRussell bodies in tumors.Independently, mostly without knowingof each other's work, several other

researchers - Royal Rife, WilhelmReich, Virginia Livingston-Wheeler, AlanCantwell and Gaston Naessens - havedescribed the same phenomenon.Orthodoxy, however, has a dogma that

says microbes always have the sameform and cannot change from virusesinto bacteria and fungi. This is becauseorthodox microbiologists commonlyobserve dead stained microbes in deadtissue, or live ones for short periods,instead of live microbes in live tissue athigh magnification over long periods.

Anyway, this microbe, generally called

the cancer microbe, appears to domuch of the damage attributed tomalignant tumors. It badly weakens theimmune system and makes it incapableof fighting cancer cells. Toxins releasedby advanced forms of this microbecause the characteristic sickening odoras in terminal cancer and cause wastingin experimental animals, just as interminal cancer. If injected into animals,

this microbe and its toxins causecancer.Several of these researchers foundways to destroy or control the cancermicrobe, which often led to a cure orremission of the disease. The cancermicrobe generally begins to proliferatewith a decline in health and vitality. Itappears to originate from breakdown

products of diseased body cells. Theunhealthier the body becomes, themore it develops from the mycoplasmastage into bacterial and fungal forms.By weakening the immune system andthe metabolism it prepares the way forthe development of cancer. Toxins

released by the cancer microbe mayalso interfere directly with therespiratory chain.Two factors that greatly contribute to the

rise of the cancer microbe are deadteeth and overgrowth of the intestineswith harmful microbes. Dead teeth havebecome a major problem because ofroot-canal treatments. The dead rootsand the surrounding jawbone commonlybecome concentrated breeding groundsof harmful anaerobic microbes,releasing a steady stream of toxins intothe circulation (9).Overgrowth of the gastro-intestinal tractwith harmful microbes has the sameeffect on an even larger scale, and is amain cause of devastating the immunesystem, frequently resulting inautoimmune diseases and Candida-related problems (10).

Therefore, in addition to regeneratingthe respiratory chain we need to

eliminate most of the microbes thatpoison the body and incapacitate theimmune system. We start doing this byremoving the main sources of microbialinfestations, their home base, bysanitizing the gastro-intestinal tract and,after sufficient cleansing and whileusing strong antimicrobials, removingany dead teeth.Sanitizing the gastro-intestinal tractinvolves killing harmful bacteria andfungi with a dose of a suitablemicrobicide, and before ingesting anycarbohydrates using a high doseof probiotics, preferably as a self-madeferment of lactobacteria.

Antimicrobial treatment requires strongremedies and needs to be done at leastfor several weeks. My favorites aresodium bicarbonate, high-dose iodineas Lugols solution or Iodoral for about 3

weeks followed by a further period onacidified sodium chlorite known as MMS(11). Also suitable are very high dosesof wormwood and extractof pau darco or olive leaf, all strongfungicides. In addition a so-calledelectronic zapper andmagnetic pulser may be used, and avariety of other antimicrobial remedies.In addition the immune system mayneed to be improved with specificnutrients, especially selenium, zinc,magnesium, iodine and vitamin D(sunshine). Many others will be helpful,especially berries yielding a purple

juice.While some cancer patients claim tohave been cured with antimicrobials asthe main therapy, others were not solucky. This is what creates theconfusion when looking for the causeand cure of cancer, almost everymethod can claim some successes andhas some failures. Neverthelesscombining antimicrobial therapy withregeneration of the oxidative energymetabolism must rate very high inovercoming the biochemical causes of

cancer.

CleansingIn addition to the problems caused bymicrobial toxins, there is also thedamage from exposure to toxicand unbiological chemicals in our foodand environment. This greatly weakens

the immune system, and Budwig as wellas Seeger have shown that it is also amajor cause for the blockage of therespiratory chain. Natural therapists arewell aware of this aspect, and basically

all natural cancer therapies stresscleansing and avoiding or minimizingcontaminated and processed food.Most of the successful older methods,such as the Gerson Therapy (12), theGrape Cure (13) or the Breuss Cure(14) rely almost exclusively oncleansing and clean living, while alsousing raw foods and nutrients with a

good track record of overcomingcancer. The Grape Cure and BreussCure are semi-fasting methods andmost suitable in the early stages ofcancer when individuals still have a fairamount of weight and vitality. Incontrast, the broader-based but alsomuch more difficult Gerson Therapy hasa good track record with advancedcancers.Such methods of clean and naturalliving place a high value on organic,unprocessed, and raw food and juiceshigh in vitality. While so far ridiculed byconventional medicine, a recentresearch paper revealed that threesmall servings of raw cruciferousvegetables per month, such as broccoliand cabbage, decreased the risk of

developing bladder cancer by 40percent. But if these vegetables werecooked than the anti-cancer effect waslost (15).

Also another cornerstone of cleansingwas recently verified by medicalresearch: it has been demonstrated that

removing protein debris or damagedproteins from cells keeps aging organsyoung and healthy (16). Of course, thesearch is now on for a patentable drugto do this.The basic importance of cleansing maybe properly understood if we assumethat the cancer microbe starts its rise astiny protein plasmas out of the diseasedprotein sludge gradually accumulatinginside cells. The more this sludge leadsto higher bacterial and fungal forms themore the oxidative metabolismbecomes blocked, and the more

inflammation and general comfort arisesin the body.

A raw cleansing diet high in chlorophyllis strongly alkalizing and thiscounteracts inflammation and pain.Commonly pain and inflammationdisappear within about 3 days on a raw-food cleanse. In the short-term a strongalkalizing and pain-relieving effect canbe achieved simply by takingbicarbonate. Temporarily half ateaspoon of bicarbonate may be takenup to seven times daily in water on anempty stomach or 2 to 3 hours aftermeals. As a general rule if there is painalkalize the body.

Using antimicrobial therapy isnecessary as a first step to keep thecancer microbe and other microbes and

especially fungi under control. However,for a long-term solution microbial basesin intestines and teeth need to becleared up, and in addition the proteinsludge must be removed from cells.This is a slow process, and after a more

intense initial cleanse there needs to bea long period of clean living.What Causes Tumors?There is still the unsolved question of

what actually causes tumordevelopment, and what is theunderlying difference between benignand malignant tumors? All of the factorsmentioned so far may be essentialingredients of cancer, but they applyalso to autoimmune diseases, such asrheumatoid arthritis and multiplesclerosis, and to chronic fatiguesyndrome. The cancer microbe is

present in all of these, and Budwigexpressly mentions diabetics and othersas having the same blockage of theoxidative cellular energy production ascancer patients, and also recover whenthis is rectified.There must be an additional factor atwork in cancer as compared toautoimmune diseases, a factor that

focuses a destructive influence on aspecific small part of thebody. Basically all chronic degenerativediseases are associated withwidespread chronic inflammation. Thisis an unsuccessful attempt of theimmune system to eliminate theinfective disease agent, the cancermicrobe or diseased body cells.If a disease-causing agent manifests ina very limited part of the body thenthere will be an inflammatory immuneresponse only in this small area. Thismay happen if a group of cells becomesabnormal due to an accumulation oftoxic chemicals, causing a localblockage of the respiratory chain, and

possible infiltration by mycoplasma. Ifthe immune system does not succeed ineliminating this threat then chronicinflammation with destruction of bodycells result. This gradually leads to

fibrosis with a tough fibroid wallsurrounding the battlefield, and we havea tumor.If the immune system is strong, thedamage to the respiratory chain locallycontained, no systemic problem with thecancer microbe, and any toxins safelystored away, then the inflammationaround the tumor subsides and we have

a benign or dormant tumor. However, ifthese factors are more severe thentumor cells have greatly reduced vitality,they divide abnormally, and if there isalso a good blood supply then the tumorkeeps growing. The cancer microbesinside the tumor become aggressiveand, aided by high acidity and chronicinflammation, help the cancer cells toinvade surrounding tissue.If in addition the cancer microbe andother microbes are active throughoutthe body, and there is widespreaddamage to cellular respiration, thencancer cells being released from thetumor find fertile ground to becomeattached and grow in other parts of thebody, we now have metastases. In away we may compare cancerous

tumors with mushrooms as both growout of a widespread fungal root andsupport system. The tumor-mushroomsare relatively harmless; instead the rootsystem and fungal overgrowth causemost of the damage. Finally the fungalforms of the cancer microbe poison the

whole body. This is cachexia as the finalstage of cancer.Tumor LocationWhat causes a tumor to grow in a

specific location, for instance in the leftbreast rather than in the right? This is aconfusing subject because there can bedifferent factors leading to the sameresult. The basic cause of a tumor islocal toxicity and damage to the energyproduction, leading to a loss of vitalityand abnormal fungus-like cell division.Experimentally tumors can be caused in

a specific location by injecting a suitabletoxin into tissue such as a concentratedform of the cancer microbe or chemicalsthat block the respiratory chain. Anotherpossibility is radiation frequently beingbeamed into the same location as froma mobile (cell) phone, or alwayssleeping in the same position over abeam of earth radiation from anunderground stream, or from radiation

treatment of an existing tumor.Natural therapists working with electro-acupuncture diagnosis have developeda chart that shows energeticconnections between specific toothlocations and specific organs or bodyparts on the same side of the body (17).If a tooth is dead as from root canaltreatment, then this energy connectionbecomes disharmonious and the organis stressed. In combination with ageneral presence of the cancer microbeand damaged energy production, thisorgan may now develop a tumor.

Another cause may be deficiency of anutrient that is needed in high amounts

at a certain location, such as zinc for theprostate gland, iodine for the thyroid,and manganese for the thymus. Incombination with other aggravatingfactors such deficiencies may lead to

tumors in these glands.With breast cancer it has been shownthat habitually wearing a tight bragreatly increases the risk (18). This isunderstandable from the principle ofdebris accumulating where the river flowslows down. In a similar way toxicchemicals will deposit in fatty breasttissue when the lymph circulation in this

area is suppressed. Another question iswhy is one breast affected and not theother? The answer may be found at theemotional level.Emotions and Cancer

Dr Budwig also addressed emotionalissues with her patients. She wrote thatshe cannot help anyone with persistingemotional problems. I am convinced

that her success was also greatlyenhanced by the positive expectationsof patients when consulting a famoustherapist.

Another German,Dr Ryke Geerd Hamer linked differentforms of cancer and tumor locations tospecific kinds of emotional shock.

Accordingly, a conflict shock concerningchild, home or mother will affect the leftbreast, while conflict shock relating to apartner or others will affect the rightbreast (19).Dr Hamer believes that mostmetastases or secondary tumors arecaused by the cancer-fear or death-fear

resulting from the patient being giventhe cancer diagnosis or a negativeprognosis. The solution is to search forany emotional shock that may havetriggered the cancer, and neutralize it

with positive emotional changes.The strong influence of fear can also beseen from an observation by the latemedical clairvoyant and TheosophistGeoffrey Hodson. He described awoman who previously had a canceroperation on one breast now becomingfearful of cancer developing in the otherbreast.The fear created a dense grey area inthe aura over this breast with increasingpain and tumor growth, so that surgerywas recommended. By cleansing theaura and replacing fear with a positiveemotion the grey area graduallydissolved which then allowed the tumorand the pain to disappear aswell. Hodson remarked that if surgerywould have been performed, the cancerwould most likely have returned (20).Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is agenerally harmless calcification in abreast that can occasionallydevelopinto an invasive tumor. The preferredmedical treatment is mastectomy.Despite this 1% of women get localrecurrence of a malignancy and another1% get distant metastases after

mastectomy.A research report found that womenwith DCIS are much more fearful of amalignant recurrence than is warranted(21. It requires a high amount of fear tohave a harmless calcification recur ascancer after mastectomy, but these

women must have had a lot of fear putinto them to agree having a breast cutoff in the first place.With this we have a further important

aspect of a comprehensive cancertherapy: reversing the lack of vitality inthe affected organ due to fear. This canbe done by refreshing a memory of joyor love, or imagining a situation that willcause such feelings, and then transferthis feeling to the affected organ.Practice this focus daily as a guidedimagery in a state of relaxation ormeditation.

A Rational Cancer ProgramA rational cancer program will includethe following aspects:

Immunotherapy vigorous antimicrobialtherapy and immune system support

Restoring the oxidative energymetabolism according to the Budwigprinciple

Cleansing and alkalizing, using naturalfood and unpolluted water

Daily guided imagery to bathe theaffected organ in positive feelings

Trying to find and neutralize anyemotional shock

Correcting any other conditions thatmay have contributed to cancerdevelopment

Supportive remedies and therapiesDirect tumor destruction aswith Cansema/cancer salves (22) orsodium bicarbonate (23) is sometimespossible but should not be done inisolation but rather as part of a holistic

program that includes immunotherapy,metabolic and emotional improvementas well as cleansing. For a program toimplement these steps see my website(24). However, there are different ways
