HOLT HONOURS AWARDSThe Annual Holt Honours Awards were presented at the Annual Town’s meeting on 27th March. This year saw a record amount of nominations, so the committee decided that we should have two categories, one for

an individual and one for a Community

group. It must be said that all nominations would have been worthy winners but a choice had to be made. The worthy winners were:HOLT & DISTRICT DEMENTIA SUPPORT GROUP (H&DDSG)The residents of Holt get no younger and dementia becomes increasingly familiar to us all.H&DDSG has grabbed the nettle. Under the tireless leadership of Wendy Richley and Eleanor Sidgwick, a growing number of hardworking volunteers have built a dynamic and client centred service. In less than three years they have developed a weekly drop in cafe, home visiting, special one off activities and monthly sports sessions, all to the benefit of those living with dementia and their carers. They have also greatly raised the public awareness of dementia in Holt and the surrounding area. The whole committee led by Wendy Richley, who had travelled from Kent for the event, and Eleanor Sidgwick came and received their awards badges, a small posy each and a certificate.Wendy thanked the Town Council for the award and reminded everybody about the reality of living with dementia.CAROLYN BURNThe Holt & District Community Cafe (H&DCC) was established to help to build community in Holt and the surrounding villages, through the provision of quality lunches in friendly surroundings and welcomes anyone who would like to attend. Carolyn and her helpers, who are all unpaid, give their time willingly to prepare, cook and serve a two course lunch every Thursday at Holt Community Centre and no charge is made for the lunch. In addition, the H&DCC hosts a Christmas Day meal at the Centre, which also has no charge and provides a chance for people to get together with others to experience a real community Christmas. Those who attend may associate Christmas with painful recollections or they may not have family and would otherwise be on their own. This special Christmas Day event gives them a chance to make new friends and new memories.Carolyn received her award, badge and certificate from Mayor Duncan Baker and again thanked the Town Council and stated that it was a privilege to serve people through the Community Cafe.

REPORT ON HOLT TOWN COUNCILS MEETING 13.03.17Holt Town Council met on 13th March 2017 for its monthly meeting. A minutes silence was held in memory of Michael Brown, who recently died. Michael was well known in the town and did serve as a Town Councillor. The Police were present but due to a new ruling are now unable to give crime figures for Holt. They now produce statistics for a whole sector which includes Holt. This is to protect any vulnerable people in smaller communities. Cllr Baker reported that the Maintenance team are getting on well and commented on how good the Memorial Gardens and Cemetery are looking. A lot of painting, staining, pruning and general maintenance has been happening in the last few months and we are now beginning to see the fruits of that work. The Town Council was delighted to see that work is taking place on the old Cottage Collectables building. This has looked an eyesore for some time but with the work that is going on at the moment it is hoped that this entrance to the town will be greatly improved. It was agreed that the Town Council would not take over cutting of the verges for this coming season. This is the responsibility of Norfolk County Council and although in the future we might take it on, for a fee it was agreed the maintenance team need to ‘bed in’ and see how the summer maintenance schedule plans out. After much discussion, it was agreed that a Chair of a working committee or subcommittee doesn’t need to be a Town Councillor. All decisions made by these committees and all money spent has to be sanctioned by the Town Council anyway, so it was agreed not to change the constitution at this time. There was good news about the provision of a new post box, located near the old Post Office, The Town Clerk has met with the Post Office and although Holt doesn’t meet the criteria for an additional box, they have accepted the need. They will look at putting it near the old Post Office but it may be difficult to place due to a lot of underground cables so they are also looking at locating it near the Millennium Bus Shelter. This is all looks hopeful and as long as the finances work out for the P.O it looks set to arrive. This will take a few weeks as planning permission etc. has to be obtained. It was reported that we had a good number of applicants for the vacant Town Councillor positions. We are delighted to announce that Richard Neech, Glenys Singleton and Philip Wright have been co-opted onto the Town Council. The calibre of all the candidates was exceptional and it was a hard choice to pick only three. But thanks to everyone who applied and well done to the new Councillors who will attend the April Town Council meeting on the 10th April, which will be held in the Community Centre and start at 7.00pm. All residents will have a chance to ‘have their say’ and we look forward to seeing YOU!

MY NORFOLK, MY HOLT The next session in this popular series will take place at Holt Library on Thursday 20th April and will be an interview with Beryl Knowles, former Head of Holt Primary School. Beryl was born on September 7th 1952 in a village called Burscough which is in Lancashire, the nearest places anyone might have heard of are, Southport, Liverpool or Preston! She has lived in Norfolk since August 1975 but her first visit here was in August 1972 and it took 12 hours to get here by coach! She came to Holt because her then boyfriend David’s parents lived in the town. She met David at college in Chester; he was the only one from Norfolk! They married in 1975 and were regular visitors to Holt.Beryll was Head at Holt Primary School from September 1995 (the first day of term was her birthday, and even stranger, the birthday of her predecessor Mr Ford), until 31st March 2012. Organisations Beryl is involved in are, FALCON, Norwich Road Runners, National Trust, and Chalk and Cheese Reading Group! Her last visits to a library, was Holt library, probably for a committee meeting, Hellesdon library last week and also the Forum.Since retiring Beryl has taken-up running and completed several half-marathons, thus she is shown here in running kit and smiling! The sessions of ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ take place monthly on a Thursday between 11.00am - 12.00noon.Booking is now essential as space and chairs are limited, please telephone 01263 712202. The event is free but donations to the library are welcome and tea and coffee are available. ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ is a great way of bringing together different members and sections of the community, as well as valuing the place of the library.

PUBLIC INFORMATION SECURES PENALTY FOR DOG FOULING COUPLENorth Norfolk District Council issues fixed penalty

notice for dog fouling in West RuntonA couple from Weybourne has been fined £60 for not bagging and binning their dog’s mess. The offence took place in Water Lane, West Runton on 24th January and was captured on CCTV but it was the quick thinking of local business owners that ensured there was sufficient evidence to issue a fixed penalty notice (FPN).Louise O’Shea and her partner Martin Hipkin, who run West Runton Café, witnessed the offence and took down the number plate of the vehicle driven by the couple. This information, along with the footage of the offence, was given to North Norfolk District Council.Louise said: “No one wants to walk along the road and stand in dog mess, it’s just not nice. As the owners of a café and car park near the beach we are really keen to assist the council in any way. We have to work together to make our environment and the place we live clean and tidy.”The fixed penalty notice was for £80, reduced to £60 for early payment.Cllr Angie Fitch Tillett, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: “This just shows that if we work together we can tackle dog fouling. We want to thank Louise and Martin for their help and encourage others to report dog fouling with as much detail as possible. We hope this fine sends a clear message to any irresponsible dog owners out there that not cleaning up after your dog will not be tolerated by our communities.”Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Ward Member for the Runtons, said: “I am delighted that by working together members of the local community and the Council have been able to take action against those who fail to clean up after their animals. Almost everyone loves dogs but not their mess, and this action sends a clear message to anyone not acting responsibly.”The offence was failure to comply with ‘The Fouling of Land by Dogs Order 2008’ and Sections 55, 56, 57 of the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005. The order covers all land open to the air and to which the public are entitled or permitted to have access (with or without payment). If a dog fouls at any time on land to which the Order applies and a person who is in charge of the dog at that time fails to remove the faeces from the land immediately, that person shall be guilty of an offence.

CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF HUMPHRY REPTON

The life and work of landscape gardener Humphry Repton is set to be celebrated through a photography competition, launched by the National Trust’s Sheringham Park. As part of the build-up to 2018 and the 200 year anniversary of the death of Repton, Sheringham Park is joining forces with the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition to search for images taken at places he helped design.Repton was involved in more than 300 commissions across the country including several in the east of England. As well as Sheringham Park, he was involved in the design of the Holkham Estate, Catton Park and at Bracondale in Norwich. Further afield, the National Trust’s Wimpole in Cambridgeshire, Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire, Harewood House in West Yorkshire and Russell Square in London all bear the mark of Humphry Repton. However it was Sheringham Park that he considered as his most favourite work, stating in the Red Book design for the park: “Sheringham possessed more natural beauty and local advantages than any place I have ever seen.” An exhibition of the images from the competition will form a part of the 2018 celebrations. There are National Trust vouchers for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, plus winning images will also be published in the beautiful annual book of International Garden Photographer of the Year Competition. To enter visit: https://igpoty.com/competitions/humphry-repton-2017/

FOOTNOTESDiabetes Mellitus

Part 2 - Diabetes Mellitus (DM) - ComplicationsToo much glucose in the blood over a prolonged period can damage the smallest blood vessels first and the organs they supply; • The eyes - Retinopathy - DM is the most common cause of blindness in under 65’s in the UK, and can cause cataracts;• The kidneys - Nephropathy –800.000 - 1.5 million vital to life Nephrons filter the blood and excrete excess salts, metabolites and fluid etc. in urine; blood volume and pressure is influenced through ridding the body of excess fluid ... or not. • The blood, (which is important to keep your whole body cells/tissue and skin healthy and repair cuts and grazes,) can become less effective at carrying nutrients and oxygen around the body. • The nerves - Neuropathy; become damaged which can lead to lack of sensation usually starting at the feet and hands as the smallest nerves become damaged first. With DM Podiatrists are concerned about the lack of feeling and healing in the feet and legs. If you cannot feel a cut or a stray drawing pin in your foot, or a sore caused by too tight a shoe, how do you know to care for it? Your Podiatrist would be able to monitor your foot health, pulses, sensation, relieve high pressure areas, give initial wound care and offer footwear and footcare advice. If more serious problems persist, podiatrists can refer to specialist multidisciplinary diabetic departments within the NHS. DM can sometimes be treated by a controlled diet alone. If you do suffer from diabetes, or you have any symptoms your local Podiatrist and GP can give practical help and recommend other forms of treatment. Funny FeetBarney, a three year old boy, put his shoes on by himself. His dad noticed the right shoe on the left foot and vice-versa. He sat Barney down on a chair and said quietly, “Barney, your shoes are on the wrong feet.”Barney looked seriously into his father’s eyes and replied, “Dad, don’t mess me about, I know they’re my feet.”Written by Gill Simmons BA(Hons) Podiatry , Dip FHP

ALDIDear Caroline,Over the past months there have been many different rumours about the proposed Aldi Supermarket, which was to be built on the old Thaxters site next to the bypass in Holt.I now hear very strong rumours that the supermarket is not going to be built and that the land will have housing on it.Is this now going to be housing or will another supermarket be sought to build on the site if Aldi have, in fact, pulled out, or is this now going to be another long drawn out affair, like the Thornage Road Car Park, that hasn’t comes to anything as of yet?Somebody must know!Yours sincerely,R Baxter

IT’S NOT CYCLISTS, STUPID

Dear Caroline,I was interested to read recent letters complaining about cyclists and would suggest we all take a broader view of such issues. As soon as a cyclist does something we don’t like, we pan all cyclists as a problem; we step in dog poo and we lay into dog walkers; someone of a different ethnicity offends us and we propose genocide. There is no more a problem with cyclists than there is with dog walkers, mobility-scooter users or young mums with buggies. The problem isn’t with any of these groups or activities, the problem is with a certain segment of our society who are either completely unaware of their behaviour or just don’t care. Give the thoughtless cyclist a dog and I’m quite sure they will watch it poo in the middle of the pavement. Later they’ll climb into their car and overtake you on a blind bend, narrowly avoiding a head-on collision. As a dog-walking, cyclist who drives a car, the biggest regular offenders I encounter are other motorists. These are way more common than bad cyclists, and far more dangerous, particularly when they decide to overtake the aforementioned cyclists on blind bends.I’m going to add one more group to the list of troublesome people - the ones who stop to buy produce from roadside honesty stalls and consistently under pay. I bet they drive badly and let their dogs poo everywhere too. These various problems will only ever go away when a particular segment of our society decides to give a s**t rather than leave it in the middle of the footpath - so don’t hold your breath (unless, of course, you just stepped in the fresh poo).Yours sincerely,Weaver Hawkins

RE: CYCLISTSDear Caroline,I am responding to two negative letters about cyclists. The first letter, in Issue 371, mentioned cyclists ignoring traffic lights. On Friday the 17th March I was cycling with two friends from Holt towards High Kelling when passed by a metallic blue car which then stopped at the temporary traffic lights at the Hopkins building site. With no one approaching from the other way the driver suddenly decided to ignore the red light and accelerated through them. The lights were red the whole time the car drove through them.I will not condone anyone breaking the Highway Code but please bear in mind that some temporary traffic lights do not allow enough time for a cyclist to pass the obstacle, while some permanent lights do not respond to a single cyclist and never change to green, as at the Overstrand Road/Norwich Road junction in Cromer. In the second letter, in Issue 372, about cycles outside Byfords, I wish to point out that six cycles can be parked in the space of one car, which possibly only brought one person in to the town. Perhaps Byfords could sponsor more cycle parking in the area (visible from their premises for security). Visiting cyclists spending £5-10 a head is a good income for Byfords and the whole town.Meanwhile, I would like to thank the kind car driver who let myself and six other cyclists out of the High Street, Holt onto Letheringsett Hill road recently and the many other drivers who gave us friendly waves (hooting can make us wobble!) as we enjoyed the beautiful Norfolk countryside.Yours sincerely, Angela Mason

CYCLISTSDear Caroline,Goodness! I thought I’d left behind the abuse of cyclists when I moved from London, but no! Following the recently published letters, I agree that there is no excuse for thoughtlessness when cycling or when leaving a vehicle on the pavement, but as a regular cyclist, I can assure you that there are many motorists who pay little or no attention to bikes on the highway.I cycle 2-3 miles into Holt several times each week and am regularly overtaken on blind bends by impatient motorists who then cut into my path when another vehicle comes towards them. There’s also the ones who don’t bother dipping their headlights during the winter, blinding me and forcing me to stop. Need I

mention the drivers who cut up my children cycling to school, or the ones who soak me by driving fast through puddles? Or those who think that they have priority and pull out, when the Highway Code clearly states they do not. It can be annoying to walk round bikes on the pavement, but where are the cycle racks? The ones outside Budgens? Or maybe the three indents in the pavement near Byfords!Given the number of shops closing and empty properties in the High Street and surrounding yards, I’d suggest we ought to be welcoming people who spend their hard-earned money in our town. And surely it’s local entertainment to watch the many families who have not been out on bikes in years struggling to get up the hills out of Weybourne and Kelling, and who thought Norfolk was flat? Please, don’t tar everyone with the same brush and show some respect for those of us not wearing lycra, just trying to get some exercise and arrive safely at work.Yours sincerely,Sheila Anderson

SPEEDINGDear Caroline,May I please explain through your column to drivers of certain vehicles, that there is a speed limit in the village of Weybourne, in some places this is 20mph.This is because we are limited in the footpath department and some bends are dangerous at lower speeds than those displayed, so a little consideration would not go amiss. Yours sincerely,John Beevis

GRESHAM’S DEVELOPMENT

Dear Caroline,We write to state our total support for the sentiments expressed in Mike Elsom’s letter (Chronicle Issue 371, 10th March 2017).The large and dominating structure that has risen up adjacent to the bungalows of Barrett Road is indeed monstrous of scale and ugly to look upon. What, one wonders, became of the earlier ‘Grand Plan’ to transfer all Gresham’s development north of the (old) Cromer Road? As Elsom observes, what on earth motivated the council to agree to this carbuncle? Do the planning regulations make no provision whatsoever for the sensibilities of the good people of Holt?We recall some time ago when the whole question of Gresham’s expansion was up for discussion, one member of the Council went on record as saying, “if Gresham’s falters, the

town of Holt will die!”One suspects with developments of this order of the forementioned carbuncle, the townspeople might well be ‘dying a little’ in their hearts as they ponder what lies in the future as mighty Gresham’s enjoy a free hand with their expansionist policies!Yours sincerely,T & R Cooke

BREXITDear Caroline,Mr. North (Issue 372) congratulates Nicola Sturgeon for her stance on the Brexit vote in Scotland.Presumably the lady in question knew the terms and conditions of the referendum vote in as much it was to be a nationwide vote with all four countries in the UK voting for or against continued membership of the EU and whichever side gained the most votes would win.It was not to be decided on a country by country vote or on a constituency by constituency basis.Having lost the referendum on Scottish Independence, she ignores those terms and conditions mentioned above to pursue her quest to break away from the UK. This smacks of opportunism in its worst form and she ignores the fact that if Scotland were to become independent, it is unlikely they would be allowed to rejoin the EU. If, however, both of those above situations came to pass just how ‘independent’ would a small country of some eight million people really be?Yours sincerely,Mike Westgate

CLAIRE’S TRIP TO NEPAL

Deare Caroline,My granddaughter Claire is joining a group of students going to Nepal in August as part of the ‘Rosie May Foundation’.Claire is studying agriculture at Nottingham University, who support the foundation by giving students the oppotunity to travel to Nepal and spend a month with host families whom they exchange farming techniques with.Rosie May, aged 10 was murdered in 2003 in the supposed saftey of a friends house by a 17 year old boy she knew. The ‘Rosie May Memorial Fund’ is a registered U.K charity and was founded in January 2004 in response to overwhelming donations from the public following her death. It’s aim is to give young people chances in life that she was denied.

(See more at www.rosie-may.com). Claire needs to raise a minimum of £800.00 to fund her trip and support the foundation. As part of this, and with the kind agreement of High Kelling Village Hall management committee, we are having a bric-a-brac table at the coffee morning on Wednessday 19th April from 10.00am to 12.00noon.Please come along and join us, entry is only £1.00, for which you get coffee and cake. MARIE CURIE DAFFODIL

COLLECTIONDear Caroline,Please may we say a very big ‘Thank You’ to everyone, who supported our 21st Marie Curie Daffodil Collection. With your help, this year we collected a brilliant £1085.74. This includes £28.30 from Benbows of Holt and £20.44 from ‘Mick the Chips Fish Bar’ of Holt.A very special ‘Thank You’ also goes to Robert of West Beckham, who donated all of the lovely daffodils, which, when given to one little girl, put all of her pocket money into the collection box!Thank you also to Budgens of Holt for letting us have our usual corner in the store. The gramophone attracted a lot of attention again and girls were queueing up hoping to catch a dance with Steve, to do the Lambeth Walk. Our thanks again to you all. Over the 21 years of collecting, our total collected has come to £18,464.87. How about that?Yours sincerely,Liz, Karin and all the helpers

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED JOINING

A PROBUS CLUB?Dear Caroline,I have been writing press reports on behalf of Kelling Probus Club for the past two years and as a result of this I have had several inquiries and the club has gained a few members, helping keep up our membership numbers.I firmly believe that there are many retired

men in the area, both newcomers and long standing residents, who would enjoy the club and gain a lot from the fellowship and friendship it provides. The name of the club is a bit of a misnomer, as we have members from all over the local area. To give you some

facts about our club I have listed some details about us.Members are from a wide range of occupations, we have retired members who were; Engineers, Churchmen, Financiers, Military, Lawyers, Medicine and lots of other different jobs, age range 60 to 90+. The clubs purpose is entirely social; we meet once a month on the third Thursday, at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham. We arrive in the bar from 12.15, eat a two course lunch and hear our guest speaker, leaving around 3.00pm. Members wear a name badge, so it is easy to talk to people without having to remember lots of names. We normally wear jacket and tie, you sit where you choose to sit and members always welcome you.Probus clubs all have their own identity, are independent and do not normally raise money for charity. Each club is run by a small elected committee of members. If you are interested in Probus, then we will welcome you and you can join if you feel the club is for you. The cost of membership is £15.00 per year plus the monthly meal cost of £12.00.If you are interested please contact me on 01263 820333 or email [email protected] sincerely,John Whittington

OUR LOCAL CHURCHESALL SAINTS, SHARRINGTON

Far from the madding crowd, All Saints continues its venerable existence whilst showing the marks of centuries of loving care. Few parts of the Church have remained unchanged over the past 800 years, with both exterior and interior showing historical alterations both of structure and fabric.Entrance to the Church is via a western door, opening to a single aisle with eleven pews on each side. Glass windows, more on the north than on the south wall, are trumped by a splendid one above the altar of more recent design. The congregation’s comfort is amply assured by electrical radiant heaters and lighting for dark evenings is provided by numerous lights in three attractive chandeliers above the central aisle.Memorials show the disproportionate price paid by men of Sharrington during the World Wars. Ancient floor brasses, now transferred to the chancel walls, reflect the history of the Church through numerous centuries.Sunday worship is shared with other local churches but there are always Communion Services at All Saints, celebrated on the first and third Sundays of each month, at 9.30am and 11.00am respectively. If you would like to have your church or chapel included in this feature, please send your contribution in for consideration (150 words plus a photograph) to: [email protected] or post to:Mr R Cox, 12A Kelling Close, HOLT NR25 6RU.

FROM THE RECTORY:Dear Friends,

Holy Week and Easter is surely the climax of the church’syear; it is a week in which Christians recall the death andresurrection of Jesus Christ as the means of our salvation and thejoy of eternal life. During the most holy of weeks in the church’sservices we accompany Jesus to the cross and his followers to theempty tomb. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead is proclaimed as avictory over sin and death and is a cause for both hope and deep joy.

Yet those caught up in the recent terrorist attack inWestminster, London, have been robbed of both hope and joy. Suchacts of violence and bloodshed can destroy hope for the future andthe joy of living. Sadly, millions of people around the worldcontinue to be affected by the hateful ideology which we sawunleashed in London, lives changed forever by the inhumanity ofthose who seek to rule by fear. But we must never allow fear totriumph, hatred to win, violence and bloodshed to dictate the waywe live. There has to be another way and Holy week and Easterpoint towards what that way could be.

Speaking in the House of Lords the day after the attack theArchbishop of Canterbury spoke of the extraordinary response ofordinary people to help the injured and the maimed and theprofessionalism of the emergency services in containing theincident and coming to the aid of those in need of help. He spoke ofthe values that are at the foundations of our own understanding ofwhat our society is about.

In the midst of death and destruction there were heroic acts ofcompassion, kindness and self-sacrifice and a willingness to try andsave the life of someone who had inflicted death on others. Drawingparallels with the events of Holy Week and Easter the archbishopsaid that the events in London and the actions of individuals speakof “ a God who stands with the suffering, and brings justice, andwhose resurrection has given to believer and unbeliever the sensethat where we do what is right; where we behave properly; wherethat generosity and extraordinary sense of duty that leads people totreat a terrorist is shown; where that bravery of someone like PCKeith Palmer is demonstrated, that there is a victory for what isright and good; over what is evil, despairing and bad.

Easter day is a celebration of the victory of love over evil andthrough the resurrection of our Lord Jesus, God shares that victorywith us, restoring hope and instilling joy, and the challenge ofEaster for all us is to share that victory with others and make it areality in our world today.

Every blessing for an Easter filled with hope and joy. Fr. Howard

CREDIT CRUNCH COOKINGTake a Walk on the Wild Side!

There’s not much in this life that is free ... but if you know what to look for and where to look, there are delicious free treats to be had when foraging. We are so blessed to live in a beautiful part of the country, with lovely woodlands to walk in. At this time of year in the woods, you can often come across a patch of wild garlic, otherwise known as ramsones, (you will probably smell it before you see it, as it has a very heady aroma) and right now is the time to forage for some, as it is only just starting to come into flower. The leaves and flowers are edible, but I have just used the leaves for this recipe. It is also delicious chopped into a salad, imparting its delicate garlic flavour and delicious freshness. If you do forage, please do so responsibly; don’t gather too much from one plant, don’t trespass and only ever take as much as you need.As much as I love lasagne, the traditional recipe is quite long winded and time consuming, so for some time I have wanted to come up with another version that cuts down the time and preparation. This recipe does take a few little short cuts (and why not?!) and makes it much quicker to prepare. The combination of the slightly tart garlic leaves, creamy mushroom and salty, nutty topping really make it a winner and although it is not the cheapest dish to make, it does feed 6 people, and is fabulous for a special occasion when you have guests over. If you can’t get the jar of wild mushrooms, just add another punnet of large flat ones, but the wild ones do give it a whole new dimension. Lidl’s are the cheapest and best I have found so far, and their Grana Padano is also very competitively priced - a little goes a long way. Do use fresh sheets of lasagne - they are so much easier to work with and the texture is far superior. Most supermarkets now do them.Wild Garlic, Walnut and Creamy Mushroom Lasagne For the creamy mushrooms:1 large onion, finely chopped2 punnets of large flat mushrooms, sliced1 jar Misto Fungi (Available Lidl, or use equivalent jar of wild mushrooms in oil)1 large tsp dried thymeDash of garlic saltPepper200ml double cream1 tsp Bisto favourite gravy granulesFor the topping:Small tub soft cheese

A little milk1 small bay leafA few gratings of nutmegSeasoningGrated parmesan or Grana PadanoA handful of walnuts, lightly toasted and broken into fine piecesTo make up lasagne:4 large handfuls of freshly picked wild garlic leaves, washed well 1 packet of large fresh lasagne sheetsStart by making the creamy mushroom filling as follows: Place onion in a large deep frying pan with the oil from the wild mushrooms, and fry gently until softened - about 5 mins. Add in the fresh mushrooms and the wild mushrooms, and continue gently frying until all is soft, adding in the thyme and seasonings. Pour in about half a teacup of water and bring up to boil, and then add in the gravy granules so that you have a thick gravy. Pour in the double cream and allow to simmer gently, whilst you prep the rest. Prepare a large pan of boiling water, and add in the fresh lasagne sheets. Remove after 3 minutes and separate. Carefully wilt the wild garlic, by placing half in a pan and put over a medium heat - you don’t need any more water than what is clinging to the leaves from washing them. Keep the leaves moving around the pan and turning, until it just starts to wilt and is about half the volume. Remove immediately from heat and do the same with the second batch. Place half the mushroom mixture into the bottom of a large deep oven proof dish. Put two lasagne sheets on top. Add the rest of the mushroom mixture on top, and then another two lasagne sheets. Put the wilted wild garlic leaves in next, and top with another two sheets. Place the cream cheese in a milk pan, and add in about 2 tablespoons milk, bay leaf, nutmeg and seasoning, and whisk over a very gentle heat until smooth for a few minutes. Remove bay leaf, and pour onto the top of the lasagne, sprinkle over the walnuts and parmesan, cover and place in a preheated oven on 180° for about 30 minutes, uncovering for another 15 minutes.Serve with a crisp green salad or broccoli. HOLT BOWLS CLUBLawn bowls is a social game played by people of all ages. It’s a vibrant game, really easy to understand but not so easy to master. The aim is simple, to get your (or your team’s) bowls as close as possible to a smaller target ball called the ‘jack’. However, to play consistently well takes practice, concentration, determination and a certain amount of luck.

Because it’s a relatively gentle game bowlers are often able to continue playing for many years so it’s often seen as an older person’s game. In recent times more

younger people have taken up bowls and, as television watchers will testify, at the top level older people provide the spectators whilst the younger players compete for the silverware.Summer is approaching rapidly and from mid April Holt Bowls Club will hold an open afternoon at our green on Woodfield Road at 1.45pm each Monday and Thursday, weather permitting, and invite potential and existing bowlers of all abilities to join us to enjoy a competitive roll up or find out more about the sport. We are always happy to encourage and coach new bowlers and should our afternoon times not be suitable we can arrange an alternative time to meet you.For more information please call Bob McQuade on 01263 861499, Hazel Rix on 01263 713149 or Sue Ealden on 01263 825147.

RSPB BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH RESULTS

Robins, starlings and blackbirds joined bymore unusual visitors

• UK gardens have seen a boom in the number of visits from unusual migrant birds such as waxwings• Number of robins seen visiting gardens at its highest level for more than 20 years• In excess of 497,000 people took part in the 2017 Birdwatch counting over 8 million birdsOver 12, 000 people in Norfolk joined nearly half-a-million people across the UK in the world’s largest garden wildlife survey, counting more than eight million birds during the 38th RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, witnessing some exciting and unusual visitors. In Norfolk, there was no change to the top two. Blackbirds took the top spot again, after being seen in a whopping 97% of gardens across the county during the survey. House sparrows came in second having been seen in 60% of gardens despite having decreased nationally by 57% since 1979.Starlings knocked the blue tits out of the top three as they moved up two places from fifth to third being seen in 30% more gardens than in 2016. The event held over the last weekend in January also revealed an explosion in the number of recorded sightings of waxwings. These attractive looking birds flock to UK gardens in winter once every 7-8 years when the berry crop fails in their native Scandinavia. Known as an ‘irruption’, results showed that within the region waxwings were seen in around 5 times more gardens in 2017 compared to previous years. Weather conditions leading up to the Birdwatch meant that this year UK gardens were treated to a range of different visitors. Along with waxwings, there was also a large jump in the number of visits from other migrant birds. In the East there were 5 times as many redwing and fieldfare seen and an 18% increase in sightings of brambling as the sub-zero temperatures on the continent forced them to go in search of milder conditions. Claire Thomas, RSPB Wildlife Advisor, said: “This year was another incredible year for the Big Garden Birdwatch, with our favourite garden birds like starlings, robins and goldfinches, joined in the gardens up and down the country by more unusual visitors. Our gardens can become an invaluable resource for birds, throughout the year birds need food, water and a safe place to shelter. If we all provide these things in our outdoor spaces it will be a huge help to our garden birds, perhaps even playing a role in reversing some declines.”The nation’s school children noticed a similar pattern when taking part in the RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch. The UK-wide survey of birds in schools saw over 73,000 school children - nearly 1,500 of whom took part in Norfolk - spend an hour in nature counting birds. Nationally, the blackbird remained the most common playground visitor for the ninth year in succession with over 88% schools spotting at least one. This remained the case in Norfolk where the top three was rounded off by woodpigeon and black-headed gull.Big Garden Birdwatch and Big Schools’ Birdwatch are a part of the RSPB Giving Nature a Home campaign, aimed at tackling the house crisis facing the UK’s threatened wildlife. The charity is asking people to provide a place for wildlife in their gardens and outdoor spaces - whether it’s putting up a nest box for birds, creating a pond for frogs or building a home for hedgehogs. BLAKENEY METHODIST CHAPEL

DEVELOPMENTFUNDRAISING

We’ve had some exciting changes done to Blakeney Methodist Chapel which have improved our worship space and facilities enormously. As a place of worship since 1812, this lovely chapel still holds Sunday services, weekly prayer groups and the acclaimed ‘Café TMC’, a welcoming seasonal café, enjoyed by local, national and international visitors. When the work was being carried out we discovered there were some deeper problems in the newer building affectionately called ‘The School Room’. In a nutshell, the timbers are rotten, the damp has seeped into the walls and the whole roof needs replacing. This is a matter of urgency for us and we are embarking on a fundraising plan. The project is supported by the Central Norfolk Circuit, of which Blakeney Chapel belongs to, but we are also hoping that we will be supported locally as well. The cost of the new roof is £35,000.So! If you would like to help us, why don’t you ‘Buy a tile!’ For the price of £5 you can ‘Buy a tile’ and help repair our roof. We are grateful for any donation small or large and more importantly for your support of the Chapel. Any donations can be sent to Lilian Timms, 9 Morston Road, Blakeney; cheques made payable to ‘Blakeney Methodist Church’ for online payments, please email [email protected] for details. Thank you for your help and support,Blakeney Methodist Church

THE ROTARY CLUB OF HOLT AND DISTRICTAfter a fund-raising event led by Rotarian Margaret Bolton, the Rotary Club of Holt and District have been pleased to present a cheque

of £800.00 to Bev Townsend, Young Carers Co-ordinator at BOOM which started work in April 2014 to provide young carers across Norfolk with access to a range of fun and sociable activities as well as essential support.Young carers are children and young people up to the age of 18 whose lives are affected by caring for someone in their family who has a long term illness or disability, mental health problem, learning disability or who misuses alcohol or drugs.Their service runs regular young carers’ groups around the county which take place every three weeks during term-time. They provide a safe, supportive environment for young carers where they can let their hair down, make friends, play, socialise and ‘forget’ their adult responsibilities for a while. It is an excellent way to allow young carers to share their concerns with people who really understand what they are going through and to seek help for any problems they may be having. Rotary members aim to give service in their own communities and further afield, if you would like to know more, please contact Michael Elsom, Secretary Rotary Club of Holt and District, telephone 01263 710118.

EACH AUCTIONING 70 ITEMS OF CLOTHING WORN BYMUSIC MEGASTAR ED SHEERAN

Items of clothing worn by the music industry’s man of the moment, Ed Sheeran, are being sold off in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). Among the set of 70 items is a T-shirt Ed wore for a magazine photoshoot in 2012 and tops he has been pictured in alongside

fellow musician Taylor Swift, plus a tour T-shirt with signed postcard. The clothes are being sold in phases on eBay, with 20 items already sold, another 20 available until 9th April, 15 on offer until 16th April and a final 15 up for grabs between 13th April and 23rd April. Each phase starts and finishes at around 6.00pm.Ed, 26, has been an EACH Ambassador since 2014 and helped the charity, which cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions and supports their families, bring in thousands of pounds. He has also paid a visit to EACH’s Treehouse hospice in Ipswich, which is close to his family home in Framlingham. This auction comes just four months after another that featured the Burberry suit jacket Ed wore to the 2013 Grammy Awards. It and more than 100 other items of clothing raised £8,060.Following that, in November, Ed made his hotly-anticipated return to music by performing exclusively for EACH at a gala

dinner in London’s Natural History Museum. He has since gone on to release his third studio album, ‘÷’, which has broken all manner of records.Jason High, EACH eBay Manager, said: “The money we’re able to raise from auctioning Ed’s clothes is invaluable to us. We have eBay customers from all over the world taking part, which helps us get the maximum amount possible.I’d like to make special mention to Brandbank, which kindly took the professional pictures of Ed’s clothes that you see on our eBay store.”To bid on the items, visit:www.ebay.co.uk/usr/eastangliachildrenshospices.

THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAILSOMETIMES SYMBOL SOMETIMES TRUTH

In the Gospel according to John, Jesus say, “He who eats my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life.” (6:54). And then he said to his disciples, “It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” (6:63). See also 2 Corinthians 3:6. Jesus is only symbolic, the Church created him!It is written in the Dead Sea Scroll called The Community Rule (IQS) column IV, “And as for the visitation of all who walk in this spirit, it shall be healing, great peace in a long life, and fruitfulness, together with every everlasting blessing and eternal joy in life without end, a crown of glory and a garment of majesty in unending light.” Here is the fruit of the tree of life, which includes eternal life (life without end). Jesus never gave anyone eternal life, he did not exist; it is the spirit that gives eternal live. The Dead Sea Scrolls in English is published by Penguin books. For more secrets see our book THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL available from Crystal Moon Cavern, 1 Mount Street, Cromer, a new age spiritual shop and holistic practice, and Grave’s Stores, Briston. Price £4.50.

ROTARY LEADS NORTH NORFOLK FUNDRAISING FOR

AN ADMIRAL NURSEAdmiral Nurses provide support for those living at home with dementia through a combination of advice, home visits and developmental assistance for local support organisations. The need for an Admiral Nurse in North Norfolk area was flagged up at Holt Rotary’s Community Lunch in May 2016. Since then through the clubs support for the Holt Dementia Friendly Community project a number of steps have been taken as follows:• The role of an Admiral Nurse in meeting local community needs has been better defined.• A partnership has been developed with Dementia UK - the national charity which helps train and fund Admiral Nurses• Discussions have taken place with the North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (NNCCG) over their assistance in funding an Admiral Nurse.• Fundraising partners have been sought to help raise £25,000 as a local contribution to the costs of an Admiral Nurse over the next two yearsAgreement has now been reached between Holt Rotary, Dementia UK, the NNCCG and a group of local fundraising partners so that an Admiral Nurse will be available during 2017.To date Holt and District Rotary Club are working together with local partners, North Norfolk Rotary Club, the Kelling Hospital Appeals Trust, the Friends of Kelling Hospital and CT Baker Group Ltd. A number of fundraising events are planned over the next few months and more information on these will be provided later.Nick Bell from Holt Rotary said ‘This project is a great example of how Rotary works with the local community in identifying needs and developing practical solutions - we look forward to working with our partners and Dementia UK in bringing an Admiral Nurse to the North Norfolk area’.Zena Aldridge, the Regional Admiral Nurse at Dementia UK, said, “ This local initiative is an important part of a larger project aimed at providing Admiral Nurses to other parts of Norfolk. I look forward to working with the local partners in North Norfolk as the project moves forward’.For more information on this project contact the co-ordinator Rotarian Greg Cooper by telephone on 01263 710600 or by e-mail [email protected] or come along to the first anniversary meeting of the Holt Dementia Friendly Community on Wednesday 10th May, 5.30pm to 7.00pm at Holt Community Centre.

FROM HOLT TO THE OLD VICPeter (Ned) Seago left Holt, the town that he grew up in, in 1986 for a job in the theatre.During his time in Holt he worked for Kings & Barnhams in the High Street and was heavily involved with the Scout movement and the local Youth Club. However, his love for the theatre was clearly evident too, when he performed on the stage at The Little Theatre, Sheringham when he was a member of the Sheringham Players. In January this year, Ned was delighted and proud to hear that he was to receive an award at The Stage Awards, held at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Ned won the ‘Unsung Hero’ category. (Photograph, right, by David Monteith-Hodge of Ned with his award)WHY HE WONSince joining the Old Vic 30 years ago, Ned Seago has become a familiar and much-loved face, both front and back stage, at the London theatre. He initially travelled to London from Norfolk for a ticket-checking job as part of the front-of-house team and was offered the role on the spot, taking up the post in November 1986. He went on to cover different roles including box office assistant and administration assistant, before moving permanently to the stage door when the current Old Vic Theatre Trust took over in 1998.He has developed a vast knowledge of the theatre, leading him to be known as the Old Vic’s ‘in-house historian’. As well as his day job as stage door manager, he also runs ‘Ned’s tours’, giving members of the public an insight into the venue.Artistic director Matthew Warchus claims there’s no such thing as an ‘entirely bad day at work when you have Ned on the stage door’. He adds, “From an early-morning welcome to a late-night farewell, he is a beacon of calm, unruffled authority. He always provokes a smile and is unfailingly sensitive, kind, discrete, loyal and supportive.”Ned said: “It’s a word I don’t often use, because I think it’s an awful word, but I am gobsmacked, because I have no idea why me. But obviously I am very glad I have won the award.I think I’ve been there so long basically because nobody else would have me, but it’s a wonderful place to work. On balance, it’s the bricks and mortar that keep me prisoner; hopefully they’ll do so until I drop off my perch.”The sponsor of Ned’s award, White Light, said, “we are delighted to support The Stage Awards, not just as a sponsor but by also providing the event’s technical requirements. For the past 45 years, White Light has been working with many of the unsung heroes of the industry: lighting designers, technicians, stage managers, production managers and many more. One of the joys of working in the theatre industry is collaborating with people who understand that ‘the show must go on’ and work tirelessly to achieve amazing results. This award celebrates the thousands of unsung heroes in our industry and we want to congratulate this year’s worthy winner, Ned Seago.”HOW IT ALL STARTED from NedIt had rained the night before and although damp underfoot on the morning of Monday 27th October 1986 it was dry overhead. The state of affairs was going to change.I had stayed the night at a friend’s place as I had an appointment, at around midday, with a gentleman called Patrick McIntyre, the front of house manager at the Old Vic. Although I’d been to London before, I was not terribly familiar with it and a little apprehensive of what was to come. Thus I boarded the underground train at Russell Square with both tube and street map in hand. After a slight hiccup at Leicester Square I eventually got off the wrong train going in the wrong direction. That is to say, the train was going in the right direction, but one of the passengers was not. I’ve never had trouble before in defining north and south but naturally when there’s a deadline .... Eventually I reached London’s largest station. I had passed through Waterloo before but never higher than the underground ticket hall and thus was bewildered when I reached the concourse. There was the clock of which I’d heard where underneath they stand wearing pink carnations or carrying a copy of the Times in order to announce themselves to others. Was that just in books? I saw no pink carnations on that morning. The clock, I thought, was very impressive and ‘oh my gosh’ it was 11.45am. The search was on to find the correct exit for the Old Vic and I eventually reached ground level at the right one. I was sweating by now and so was the sky, in stair-rods.It is my fate to be cursed with an almost pathological fear or horror of being late, it is rude and uncaring. I will wait for only half an hour for anybody else, during which I have time to contemplate their other faults, and carry on without them. So I determined to make a dash for it rather than wait for the rain to stop. Possibly a bad move. Upon reaching the theatre’s stage door and gaining ingress, I sat and dripped over the stairs. In time Mr McIntyre appeared and led me through to his office in the foyer. To reach front of house at the Vic one has to cross either wing of the stage, there is no other way internally. The external route is to go out through the stage door and in through the foyer thus braving Lambeth Council’s notoriously uneven paving stones along the way. Anyway, back to being led across the stage wing. The Vic was gearing up for it’s next production ‘The Women’ after a short period of closure following the demise of a show that was booked to play there. It was to open on the 19th November. There on the stage was a veritable host of actresses among whom I briefly spotted Suzanna York, Maria Aitkin and Georgina Hale. Mr McIntyre sat me down in his office where there was a full length mirror on the wall and where my chair was positioned so that I could see my reflection. Not a pretty site.Rivulets of water ran from my hair (I had more then), my tie resembled a piece of damp lettuce and my black shoes had white patches caused by nervous sweat from within and rain water from without. I thought this to be a complete waste of time despite my earlier musings about the invitation to interview from Mr McIntyre. He had written in response to my answering an advert in the stage newspaper for front of house staff, there had also been an advert for box office operatives, asking if I would ‘pop in’ to see him to chat about my application. I was slightly forward in thinking that I probably had the job already. Would he have asked me to ‘pop in’ from Norfolk, my natural home, an awfully long ‘pop’ if not? Looking at that ghastly reflection all hope had vanished. After some preamble came the all important question. “How many shows a week could you commit to?” asked Mr M. “How many do you do?” I asked, expecting to be told eight but not actually knowing. Then Mr M explained, Monday to Saturday nights and a Wednesday and Saturday matinee. “Then I’ll do eight” I told him knowing that if I was given this job I’d have nothing else on my calendar except a move to London. Then came the words which proved to be quite true, “I think we’ll get on very well” he said. After a little more chat and having been told of the inaugural meeting of new and returning staff at 6.30pm on 18th November Mr McIntyre, by now Patrick, and I shook hands and he showed me out through the front door. I had come in to the Old Vic by way of the back and left through the front. Over the coming years I would slowly work my way from front to back!Wow! At a time when I needed a new beginning I had been granted one. I’d a job at a renowned (just how renowned I was yet to learn) theatre in the capital city. As I walked out of the building (and I know it sounds like a cliché but ...) the sun came out.It was still bloody cold though!

FUNNY/STRANGE FACTS! (Believe it or not!)

An employee of the Alabama Department of Transportation installed spyware on his manager’s computer and proved that the boss spent 10% of his time working, 20% of time checking stocks and 70% of the time playing solitaire. The employee was fired, the boss kept his job. A Brussels Airlines flight to Vienna was aborted because the pilot was attacked in the cockpit. The attacker was a passenger’s cat, who got out of its travel bag. The average chocolate bar has 8 insect legs in it. Fleas can jump 130 times higher than their own height. In human terms this is equal to a 6 foot person jumping 780 feet into the air. Snakes are true carnivores as they eat nothing but other animals. They do not eat any type of plant material.

THE BARSHAM ARMSSet in the quaint village of East Barsham, adjacent to East Barsham Manor, and recently re-opened after a complete refurbishment, The Barsham Arms (formerly The White Horse Inn) is a cosy country pub and kitchen serving homecooked food daily. The inn originates from the 17th century and is a grade II listed building. New owners, Jon and Amy, who also own the Crown Inn at Pulham Market, have given the pub a complete makeover and hope to make the Barsham Arms a destination pub and restaurant in North Norfolk. The interior incorporates traditional features including original beams and open fireplaces. You’ll spot British influences as well as English gentry in keeping with the age of the building. The restaurant offers pub classics with a modern twist, using quality fresh locally sourced ingredients cooked to order and served professionally by a team of passionate Chefs. Alongside the main menu there are specials changing weekly to incorporate seasonal produce as well as a light bites snack menu and traditional roasts every Sunday.

Open daily from noon, food service hours vary depending on the season, check the website for more information. The renovation will continue soon with the opening of the existing rooms and the adjoining holiday cottages.

LABOUR ANNOUNCES ITS COUNTY COUNCIL CANDIDATES FOR NORTH NORFOLK

North Norfolk Labour Party has announced its candidates for the eleven North Norfolk divisions in May’s county council elections. The party hopes to build on the 2013 county council elections when it almost won two seats in North Walsham West & Erpingham and Fakenham. Labour’s 2017 county council candidates are:Cromer - Jane Worsdale Fakenham - Imogen BruceHolt - Richard KelhamHoveton & Stalham - Mandy McKennaMelton Constable - Callum RingerMundesley - Ray MooneyNorth Walsham East - Jacqui CrossNorth Walsham West & Erpingham - David SpencerSheringham - Sue BrisbaneSouth Smallburgh - David RussellWells - Stephen BurkeChair of North Norfolk Labour Party, Stephen Burke, said: “May’s elections give North Norfolk residents a say on the future of their county. Key services like care for older people and education for our children need investment, alongside infrastructure such as transport, roads and broadband. Norfolk has a lot to offer but we must ensure that all our residents benefit and prosper.Local people are fed up with the Tories and have been let down by the LibDems. Labour offers a real alternative for change in North Norfolk and across the county.”

NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL TO CHALLENGE WIND

TURBINE DECISIONAnnouncement at Full Council meeting

re Bodham and Selbrigg turbinesNorth Norfolk District Council leaders have announced they will apply to the High Court in a bid to quash a decision of the Planning Inspectorate to allow two wind turbines to be built in North Norfolk. The announcement was made at Full Council on 22nd March. The long running battle to prevent the turbines being built has seen a number of decisions over the years. The latest was the decision of an Inspector to overturn North Norfolk District Council’s refusal of planning permission for the two schemes: a turbine at Pond Farm, Bodham, submitted by Genatec with a maximum tip height of 66m; and Selbrigg Generation’s application

for a turbine with a maximum tip height of 78m at Selbrigg Farm, Hempstead.North Norfolk District Council’s Leader Tom FitzPatrick said: “We are very much in agreement with the vast majority of the local community on this matter. The proposed wind turbines would detract from the unique landscape of this beautiful area and destroy its tranquility. We have discussed our options and carefully considered the next step, which is to apply to the High Court to quash the Inspector’s decision.”Sue Arnold, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Planning Policy, said: “We believe these turbines are in the wrong place and we want to support the views of our local communities. Our view is very much that we do not need onshore wind turbines, which among other impacts can damage the local tourism economy.”An earlier application by Genatec for a 86.5m-tall turbine was rejected by NNDC in 2012, approved by a Planning Inspector on appeal but that decision was overturned in the High Court in February 2014.

NORTH NORFOLK PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

North Norfolk Photographic Society held a competition for printed pictures on 15th March. The judge on this occasion, a new visitor to the club, was Dianne Gibson, who came from the other side of Norwich to do the honours, being a member of Bunwell and District Camera Club.As is now the arrangement, Novice members were first to put up their prints to be assessed. First place went to Val Dawson whose somewhat menacing photo of a crocodile (maybe an alligator?) was called ‘Keeping Watch’ .

Second was Grace Glaister with a picture of a field, and in the middle of it, two crows. Grace also won third place with ‘Remains of the Day’.

Then - the ‘Advanced’ section. This was won by Bernard Dawson, with a clever picture of a face mixed with an overlay of rectangles, each filled with various shapes and images and entitled ‘Dilapidated‘. Second came Paul Richards’ ‘Horse with a View’, a horse

in a landscape, and third Barb Gardner with ‘Norwich Cathedral from Peters’ Bridge.’Meetings of the North

Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at [email protected] or see the club website athttp://www.nnphotosoc.org/.

WHEN THE TOUGH GET GOING …..!It was the annual Briston Day Care Sports Day recently - after last minute practice sessions on 31st March, the next day’s Annual Sports Day itself brought forth some amazing scenes. The arm wrestling was very competitive as you can see, although there were allegations of doping - it was proved afterwards that Colin had taken two Trebor mints an hour before the contest. The finals of the Poker championship became quite heated too, when

Joan and Betty threw their whole pensions into the pot …. and Joan’s cigar set off the sprinkler system….No, seriously, we don’t get up to things like this really, but we do have wonderful trips out to garden centres, cafes, pub lunches, mystery trips through the Norfolk countryside in our own

minibus, musical entertainment and slide shows at our comfortable venue and we get a good two course lunch, transport to and from the Centre and, above all, we get loads of laughs, as it is such a happy place. If you are lonely, or retired, or have mobility problems, and live within six of miles of Briston, and would like to see what we have to offer, why not book in for a taster session? We meet every Monday and Thursday, and you can always give us a ‘phone call there on these days between 9.00am and 2.30pm and speak to Carol or Dorothy to find out more. The number is 01263 861120. We would love to hear from you, even if you don’t play poker …..

HOLT WI ~ March MeetingJudith Follows our President welcomed everyone to the meeting. A good number of members and three visitors attended.Members were asked to look at the WI notice board where candidates for the National Board of Trustees were displayed. Any member from Holt who knew someone on the list was asked to tell the meeting about them, so we had some idea of who we wished to vote on to the board. We had an excellent talk from Anne May (right) who gave us a guided tour through the History of the Fan from the time of Tutankhamun to the early 1900s. Fans come in all shapes and sizes, some early ones had long handles and were used for religious festivals. Most were carried by men and used for a particular purpose and to show rank and importance. Fashion fans came later becoming more decorative with beautiful boxes made to protect them and prevent fading. Folding fans from the late 18th and early 19th century used stiffened paper covered with silk sometimes with mother of pearl sticks. The Victorians had black fans for mourning, one made with Chantilly lace with dark tortoiseshell sticks came with a black box lined with purple satin. Gentlemen needed to know how to recognise the way a fan was held as often they were not allowed to speak to the young lady of their choice, but she could communicate, and flirt, by using her fan.During tea and social time we had a quiz about WI special events and dates.Brenda Ridd was congratulated for having a photo sent forward for possible inclusion in the 2018 WI National Calendar. At our 19th April meeting the speaker will be Ian Hudson who will talk us through a Virtual Walk around Sheringham Park.

CHILDREN AND CHURCH!A little boy was overheard praying: “Lord, if you can’t make me a better boy, don’t worry about it. I’m having a real good time like I am.”A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to church service, “And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?” One bright little girl replied, “Because people are sleeping.”A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. “If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, ‘Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.’Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, “Ryan, you be Jesus!”

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED

After advertising for Volunteers at our Holt and Wells branches, we managed to recruit 5 new volunteers! Thanks to the power of local advertising, we have increased our volunteer hours by 24 per week, helping to raise crucial funds for neurological and hospice care across the UK. We are celebrating the fact that Christine has volunteered with us for 11 years in Wells and Sylvia is due to receive her 5 year award for supporting Holt! A huge THANK YOU to our incredible volunteers! We still require more volunteers to ensure we deliver the best customer service and continue to provide much needed healthcare for our service users. Anyone in the Holt or Wells area who can spare a few hours a week to volunteer in our shops are encouraged to contact us on 01263 710064 or 01328 710548 in order to become a part of our growing and vibrant team.It is a known fact that volunteering is good for the mental and physical well-being. And today’s age of increased loneliness it’s a great way to support communities and combat isolation whilst in our case raising funds for incredible care. One volunteer told us “I love the voluntary work I am doing and the people I work with. Choosing to volunteer at the Sue Ryder shop was very good decision and has made a great difference to my life.”

A CLEVER MAN THAT FRANKShirley, the church gossip and self-appointed monitor of the church’s morals, kept sticking her nose into other people’s business.Several members did not approve of her extra-curricular activities but feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town’s only bar one afternoon. She emphatically told Frank (and several others) that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing!Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away.He didn’t explain, defend, or deny.He simply said nothing.Later that evening, Frank quietly parked his pickup in front of Shirley’s house, walked home ... and left it there all night.

CHESS PROBLEMS by Dr Cedric Lytton

Solutions to No. 207: (a) 17... gxf6 l8.Rxe7 Rxe7 19.Rxe7 Qxe7 20.Qg4+ forking K and R. (b) 17... Bxf6 18.Qg4!! Qb5 19.Qc4! Qd7(the black Re8 must remain twice defended) 20.Qc7! Qb5 21.a4! (avoiding 21.Qxb7? Qxe2! 22.Rxe2 Rc1+ and Black wins instead - White truly hoist with his own petard) 21... Qxa4 22.Re4! (now the R is offered) 22... Qb5 23.Qxb7 and Black resigned - his Q has nowhere to go. A true brilliancy, White offering his Q four times as a deflection sacrifice; a combination to be remembered as long as chess is played. The composer of No. 208 is indeed the famous Estonian grandmaster who probably counts as one of the greatest players never to win the World Championship. The mainplay is only 6 moves deep, with a Philidor motif and two sidelines at moves 1 and 2 which should not hold you up too much. Difficulty 3 to 4.Solutions to me at 16 Lime Grove, Sheringham NR26 8NX, or e-mail to [email protected].

HIGH KELLING GARDEN CLUBJamie Blake, Head Gardener at Bressingham gave a talk on ‘The Life and Work of Alan Bloom’ at our March meeting. Alan Bloom was born in 1906 and died in 2005. He was a thinker and doer and easy to get on with. He founded the Hardy Plant Society. His parents moved to Over where they had a village shop. While there Alan went round the villages selling cress. The family later moved to Meadow Farm House, Oakington. When Alan was 17 years old he went to stay with his uncle in Sussex, later moving to Pickering, Yorkshire, and returned to Oakington in 1926. In 1938 - 1939 he produced the ‘Wholesale Catalogue of Hardy Plants’. He went to work on a 200 acre Priory Farm in the Fenlands. At the end of the war he wrote a book ‘The Farm in the Fen’. In 1946 the family moved to Bressingham Hall with 220 acres of land. However, in 1947 Alan was left to look after his 3 children by his first marriage. After advertising, he found Myra to help him with the children and they all moved to Vancouver Island, Canada, to farm but it wasn’t very successful and they returned to Bressingham. He advertised again and Flora McIntosh came to help. They married and had two daughters, Jennie and Anthea. Jamie Blake eventually married Anthea.Alan had a two acre pond at Bressingham where he went fishing, punting and speed-skating.He also took a great interest in his steam engines, ‘Oliver Cromwell’ and ‘Royal Scot’.The next meeting on 10th April is the Annual General Meeting and will start at the earlier time of 6.45pm. Coffee, tea and biscuits will be available beforehand. A talk by Simon Harrap from Natural Surroundings will follow. New members and visitors are very welcome. Please contact Joyce on 01263 713 971 if you require more information.

NORFOLK ANGLING CLUBNorfolk Angling Club, formed in 2013, is celebrating following recent international selection and match results for its members. As a small club, with around 50 members, Norfolk Angling Club started out as a Monday night league for pleasure anglers to get together and fish, and although this ethos still continues at the Club, some of its members have taken match fishing to the highest level.

Some club members were recently selected to the SAMF (Sea Anglers Match Federation) GB Team, and recently competed on the North Norfolk beaches of Kelling, in the 2017 SAMF Challenge against strong opposition teams from the Police, Combined Armed Forces and the Fire Service. The two day match was fought hard by all teams, with anglers catching plenty of fish, including Dogfish and large Pouting. However, it was the SAMF Team and contributions from some Norfolk Angling Club members, Simon Bone, Dene Conway, Richard Hipperson, Russell Taylor and Henry Randall, that ensured the final win for SAMF. NORTH EAST NORFOLK BIRD GROUP - FORTHCOMING EVENTS

Felbrigg Park: Mid-week Walk 19th April 09.00am - 11.00amThis walk caters for all levels of ability. We will take a leisurely walk around the Park and Lake, route dependent on the local bird and other wildlife likely to be present on the day. Please wear clothing appropriate to the weather; footpaths in Felbrigg can be muddy at any time of the year. Meet at Sexton’s Lodge car park, off Lion’s Mouth, NR11 8PS at the western end of the estate. To keep the club’s carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. As usual, children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs.Weybourne Camp, Muckleborough Hill and Kelling Water Meadow 23rd April 9.00am - 1.00pmMoss Taylor will lead a walk around an area which is famous for migrant birds, but which is largely inaccessible to the general public. We will leave the Muckleborough Collection car-park at 9.00am, explore a variety of habitats within Weybourne Camp, then visit Kelling Water Meadows and return back over Muckleborough Hill. We have scheduled the walk to (hopefully) catch a nice range of spring migrants, but birding at migration time is always highly weather-dependent. This is a moderate walk over varied terrain (some of it possibly wet), with a short climb over Muckleborough Hill. Stout footwear is essential. We will return to the car-park between noon and 1.00pm. The Muckleborough Collection has facilities and a cafe. The Muckleborough Collection is just to the west of Weybourne Village. Go through the gates (which will be open from 8.30am), proceed along the straight drive and turn right at the V1 doodlebug and long white building into the clearly marked car-park. The post-code for sat-navs is NR25 7EH. As usual, children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. Andy Clarke will co-lead.Birdwatching Holidays on a Budget - Trevor Williams27th April 7.30pm - 9.30pmFor those on a modest budget, who want to make the best of the birding opportunities on a foreign trip, this talk introduces a dozen or so potential venues for a birding holiday. Venue - Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club’s carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.

THAT’S LIFE!More true life experiences

We had a coal fire house when I was growing up, and a chimney sweep came every six months to clean it.On one occasion, the usual man arrived with a fancy new electric cleaner. When the job was done, he presented my mother with a rather large bill. She queried the inflated amount and the sweep explained that the extra cost covered the price of electricity as well. Satisfied, my mother settled up.It was only after he’d gone that we realised it was our electricity supply he used. Our son was doing his home-work and called out, “Dad, where are the Alps?”“Ask your mum,” was the reply. “She’s always putting things away!”I was having tea at home with a couple of friends, one of whom had brought her precocious seven-year- old son along. After an hour or so, he was getting rather fidgety and bored. The conversation turned to weight, and my other friend (who is quite large) said that she thought she was suffering from water retention.Suddenly, a voice piped up from across the room: “More like cake retention!”You could have heard a pin drop.

POLICE NEWSMORE THAN 100 DRIVERS STOPPED FOR

SEATBELT OFFENCES DURING CAMPAIGNPolice in Norfolk have been targeting drivers who fail to belt-up as part of a week-long enforcement campaign. Officers from Norfolk and Suffolk’s Roads Policing and Firearms Operation Units (RPFOU) and the Road Casualty Reduction Teams (RCRTs) supported the Europe-wide TISPOL campaign (13-19 March) with a total of 109 tickets issued for seatbelt offences. As part of the campaign, roads policing officers also used an unmarked HGV to target drivers on the A11 and A47 on Thursday 16th March. The vehicle, which was loaned from Orwell Trucks was also used on major routes in Suffolk during the week, as it provides officers with an ideal vantage point to spot drivers not wearing seatbelts or using a mobile phone. It also means officers can look into the cabs of other lorry drivers. On Thursday 16th March, police issued 29 tickets for seatbelt offences while two drivers were stopped for using their mobile phone and another driver for not being in proper control of a vehicle.Other results included; • Speeding x 2 • Dangerous condition x 1 • Defective tyre x 1 • Defective exhaust x 1 • Construction and use offences x 4 Sgt Julian Ditcham, who led the operation on Thursday, said: “Due to the physical height of commercial vehicles, it is often difficult for patrol officers to view into the cab and thereby detect offences such as using a mobile phone, which distracts drivers and increases their chances of being involved in a serious or fatal collision. The HGV cab provides officers with an ideal vantage point to spot dangerous driving, either catching people using mobile phones or not wearing a seatbelt. This was a successful campaign and will be repeated in the future. We would offer our thanks to Orwell Trucks for supporting this road safety campaign.” Wearing a seatbelt can prevent many collision-related injuries and fatalities and it is compulsory drivers wear them, and ensure their passengers buckle-up too. Seatbelts should be worn in any vehicle they are provided in, including buses and goods vehicles. Anyone caught not wearing a seatbelt may be issued with a TOR (Traffic Offence Report) and face a fine, points on their licence or even court action.

VOLUNTEERING CAN A MAKE A REAL

DIFFERENCE “Not just existing but actually living a life”, is how Richard Snow (pictured) explains how volunteering as a befriender has made an impact on the clients he has visited. He initially decided to volunteer to give some purpose to his life following retirement and found it a great way to meet new people and have new experiences. He has found the experience to be very fulfilling after being matched with clients with similar interests to his own and is encouraging people to come forward to volunteer.Richard volunteers for the North Norfolk Health Volunteers scheme, a befriending service run in partnership with North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which links volunteers with people who are experiencing long term health conditions, which leave them socially isolated and less able to participate in their local community. The most popular activity is a simple coffee and chat, but, depending on what volunteers wish to offer, it could involve a short walk, a game or craft activity or even a short trip out in the car. ‘Volunteers can make an immense difference in a very short space of time’, according to service coordinator Natalie, ‘a weekly visit of maybe just an hour or two can leave people feeling that there is ‘someone out there’ who cares about them, and can dramatically reduce their sense of loneliness, even during the time they spend by themselves.’ The service is currently looking for more people to come forward to volunteer and make a difference to people’s lives. For further details please contact Natalie Hickman or Simone Reade at Voluntary Norfolk on 01263 519454 or [email protected].
