PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Community Celebration Day - “Bookshelf What a fabulous event! Again, I was not prepared for the colour, the preparation and just what this day means to our community – it just keeps on getting better and better! Having attended the meetings, seeing and hearing the rehearsals, nothing could possibly prepare anyone for this live extravaganza – it was just simply awesome! Well done to all the classes, whose items were superb and reflected the amount of hard work their teachers and the students had put into it. Every item was very entertaining, with lots of work put into costuming and props. Like last year, before it had even started, I could sense from the students through their anticipation of the event, this was going to be a special day and it surely was, it truly was a great show.

The smiles and joy on the students faces was also something to behold, as well as the talent in dance and song – who could forget Kindergarten all on stage together as friends, 6H’s Men in Black, 5B’s Lord of the Flies, 3/4B’s Where’s Wally ?, 3A & 3/6R’s Have you filled

a bucket today ?, 2F & K/6S’s Pig the Star, 1A & 1G’s Where the wild things are, the wonderful cultural interventions of Turkish and Arabic dance, Korean dance story – Jewel in the Palace, the spectacular Chinese dance group, the beautiful voices of our choirs, our wonderful Our Spectacular Dance troupe and Junior Choir……… in fact, I could list every act because it was all so very entertaining ! Overwhelmingly positive was the amount of parents, grandparents, uncles, aunties and siblings who showed up to be part of the Community Celebration Day and the fact the P&C made quite a lot of money out of selling food to the masses. Thank you very much to the committee members, superbly led by Julie Rush, who volunteered their time to serve at our BBQ / International Food Fair. Early estimates indicate that around $6000 was raised, which is outstanding! The Book Fair has sold about $1700 worth in books as well, making it a very successful day all round. We still have our Art Auction, which we will be finalising tomorrow, Friday 27 September.

Thank you also to all the parents who took the time to make all of that lovely international cuisine that really added to just how unique and special this day is for us all. It was very heartening to see so many parents, family members and ex-students attend and care so much for our school and what it does. A huge thank you must go to all of our staff, but in particular our Creative Arts leaders, Miss Helen Chan and Mr Corey Minett who have been the backbone and vision behind the performances and the show itself. They have also been assisted by Mr Chris Windle, who has done a lot of the work behind the scenes with lighting and stage decoration, as well as Miss Julia Zong and Mr Erwin Manalo, who put the iMovies and music together for the technology part of our show. Many hours of extra time and preparation went into this event, to create such an atmosphere and without them, the day would be nowhere near as special. To top that off, the teacher video was awesome, well done to Miss Sandy Mo for all of that work. My hat is

certainly off to our teachers. Their superb leadership of this event brought our school community a sensational event that I’m sure could not be replicated in any other school.

Thanks also to our wonderful, dedicated staff, including our office staff, particularly Mrs. Lopes and Mrs Rush – you cannot provide this type of entertainment without support from the whole staff! Organising the International Food Fair, sausage sizzle orders, plus organising a lot of our P&C to be involved – amazing work Mrs. Lopes and Mrs. Rush.

You could tell all the students enjoyed themselves immensely and we all certainly enjoyed watching your children perform as well as they did. I think what we witnessed yesterday was that as a school community, we are all about recognising the students’ achievements and talents at our school, and it’s the very reason that together, we are creating a culture of success and high standards as well as a caring and friendly atmosphere. In any case, we are indeed a fortunate school and I’m absolutely blown away by such a wonderful event. Thanks to everyone involved.

To the parent/grandparent/visitor at our Book Fair on Wednesday who, on seeing one of our students who really wanted to purchase a book but only had a 5c piece, paid $3.00 so that this child could have their chosen book, we say THANK YOU very much. What a kind and thoughtful thing to do! Also, many thanks to Mr Duffy and the Evans family who purchased books and donated them to our library. High absences - Term 3 It was noticed by myself and a lot of teachers, that there were a lot of students on overseas trips during Term 3. Fair enough if you had let us know you were going on the trip through the exemption process or even had approved leave because of a medical emergency overseas. Not fair enough that when you come back, you allow your children to have the next week off because of jet lag. This shouldn’t happen ! I think most people know that adults are more affected by this than children. We need them at school as much as possible so we can work our magic. Don’t let this creep in and become a new trend, because the answer will be the same – unexplained absence or unreasonable excuse. If you choose to do this when your trip was over 45 days (but not quite 50 – as I de-enrol when it gets to this mark), if it takes you passed the 50 days mark, I will immediately de-enrol your children and on your return, you will have to enrol your children all over again. If you are out of area, you probably won’t get back into our school. Simple as that. Please think very carefully as to why your child is missing school and if you are taking a trip overseas, how long your child will be absent from school and how much learning they will missing. We strongly recommend against taking long trips.

Enrol now for Kindergarten 2020 Does your preschool child turn 5 years of age before 31 July 2020? Have you enrolled your child at Lidcombe Public School for next year? Now is the time to fill in your application. Please call into the office for an enrolment form as soon as convenient or arrange for one to be sent home with an older brother or sister.

Our 2019 Kindergarten Transition program has changed dramatically and this will be the fourth year of its implementation. We will begin with Kindergarten Orientation Night (Thursday 26 September 2019, starting at 6.00pm in the Hall), then we will start our transition days in Term 4, running from 9.00am to 11.00am in the mornings on the following days:-

Thursday 17 October 2019

Thursday 24 October 2019

Thursday 31 October 2019

Thursday 7 November 2019

Thursday 14 November 2019

Thursday 21 November 2019

Thursday 28 November 2019

Thursday 5 December 2019

There will be a number of great activities for your child and you as their parent that will not only strengthen your bond, but also familiarise and build confidence in your child about their classrooms, teachers and other students.

If you have already completed an Application for Enrolment form for your Kindergarten child you will automatically receive further details about these sessions as they become available. If you would like to read some general information about enrolling in a NSW public school please refer to the Department of Education and Training website link:- www.schools.nsw.edu.au/media/downloads/gotoschool/enrolment/detsef.pdf

Kindergarten students will start school on Wednesday 5 February 2020. Of course, parents and Kindergarten students will be called in before that for their Best Start Interview – times to be announced.

Medical Issues As a reminder, we have a few children who have an extreme allergic reaction (which can be life threatening) to peanuts and other nuts and now, also a student with an allergy to wheat and one to sesame seeds – even if the skin comes into contact with wheat or sesame seeds. This means that these children cannot come into contact with other people who have eaten wheat or nut products (eg. Bread,

Nutella, peanut butter, any types of nuts or any foods that contain nuts or wheat or nut and wheat products). I realise that the school can never really be nut free, and almost certain we will never be wheat free but I’m sure that all parents can be very vigilant about this problem and not send their children to school with anything that contains nuts, including home made birthday cakes etc. This way, we will become nut-aware. It is a challenge for us at school as well as our community, but I am confident that everyone will pull together to make our school a safe place for every child. Below is a picture of a Snickers treat found in the school playground last year. It was obviously brought from home as I know the canteen doesn’t carry such treats. Whether this was done by a parent or child, it is important to have these chats as a family to ensure we make our school environment safe for everyone. Please have this chat with your child(ren) about this issue and tell them what it could mean for the child who does have an anaphylactic reaction to such treats. When the outcome could be death, we certainly need to make sure we are reacting to the issue in the right way.

As a rule anyway, if your child does present as ill before they come to school, it is better that you keep them at home, so as not to spread the disease throughout the school. We respectfully request that all children and parents of Lidcombe PS follow these guidelines over 2019 and beyond. If you have any enquiries regarding this, please contact me at the school office.

School Uniforms The parent community of Lidcombe Public School has determined that all students attending Lidcombe PS should wear school uniform. The principal and school staff fully support and endorse this decision and encourage all students to comply with this expectation. All students are expected to exhibit good grooming and personal cleanliness. Offensive slogans on clothing or belongings will not be permitted. At the end of 2011, we officially took over control of the Uniform Shop from Lowes and now parents can buy the uniform from our school. It is located at Lidbury Hall (near Blocks A and C) and you can visit the Uniform Shop on

Page 9: The - Home - Lidcombe Public School...who have eaten wheat or nut products (eg. Bread, Nutella, peanut butter, any types of nuts or any foods that contain nuts or wheat or nut and

Wednesdays 8.30 to 9.15am or on Friday afternoons 2.30 – 3.15pm. Now that spring is almost upon us, it is important that the school uniform is still worn. I understand that it is colder and other jackets might start to appear. That is fine, as long as your child is wearing the school jacket or school jumper underneath, not just the colourful jacket on top of the polo shirt. There have been some other ‘variations’ of uniform as well. Black jumpers are creeping in – no, black long tights underneath shorts – no, wear long grey pants if you are cold, beanies – no, wear the school hat. If I continue to see these items of clothing that aren’t school uniforms, I will be contacting parents directly. Please ensure the students are in the correct uniform. I would like to focus on the wearing of our school hat and black school shoes. There seems to be a quite a few students who tend to wear any hat to school, and when I look out over the school population at a morning assembly, it doesn’t look good. With the wearing of black school shoes, these can be black sneakers also, whichever of the two they are more comfortable in, but they must be black.

Platinum Awards Being Green suggests that your child is behaving very well and is doing what our teachers expect of them in the classroom and the playground. There were no Week 9 recipients due to the rain cancelling our K-6 Assembly. Our Week 10 recipients are:- Duncan Soejanto (6Q), Shalona Acharya (6H), Aris Milan (6A), Queenie Ding (3T) and Ryan Ao (3T). Well done students !

Unwanted visitors It seems as though from time to time, we have a number of people who come into the school. If it happens before or after school, of course, make sure you inform me or at the very least, inform the office

of something you have witnessed or are not happy about. Sometimes, we have people come in on the weekends or over the holidays too. Most of these people do come in a use the playgrounds in the right way, but others are only interested in causing damage or vandalising our property. If you notice any such behaviour going on within our school, could you consider ringing the school security unit’s to report suspicious activity on their 24-hour hotline number, 1300 880 021. Your assistance here is greatly appreciated to keep our school looking beautiful and functional for our wonderful students.

Chinese / Korean Cultural Night Wow, what a night ! And yet another 300+ turn out to witness the cultural celebrations on the Mid-Autumn or Moon Festival (Chinese) or Thanksgiving or Chuseok festival (Korean). An amazing amount of time, effort and organisation went into this night by the whole Community Language team, in particular Mrs Park, Mr Gan, Mrs Ji, Miss Kim and Ms Ward. I find these nights to be particularly joyous and really that’s at the heart of our school community, celebrating, not just tolerating, cultural difference and uniqueness. Thank you to everyone that came. Stay tuned for our Pacific Islands Night as well as a Carols night coming in Term 4.

Debating Team Success After the disappointment of losing the debating Grand Final last year, our debating team bounced back this year to convincingly take the title. They were facing a very good Birrong PS team that was very well coached, but as the Grand Final needs to test all skills, an impromptu part was put into this year’s final and as such, the Lidcombe team proved to have too much skills there. We were really appreciative and humbled that out most experienced principal in this district, Mr Mark Harris (Auburn North PS) was able to join us to adjudicate. One of his passions is debating and public speaking and his advice was wonderful for all concerned.

Page 10: The - Home - Lidcombe Public School...who have eaten wheat or nut products (eg. Bread, Nutella, peanut butter, any types of nuts or any foods that contain nuts or wheat or nut and

What a year we are having – congratulations on all your success debating team – you make us all proud ! Well done Mrs Matthews as well for your outstanding coaching and leadership of the District competition.

Great work ! The best part of my week is when students come to visit me in the office to show me outstanding work. In these last two weeks it has been exceptional, particularly with Stage 3 Genius Hour and the cooking they have been doing ! Firstly, Lynn Shi, who arrived at our school earlier this year with no English, has worked steadily over the last two terms with Mrs Ng and the results have been outstanding ! Lynn is pictured here with a fantastic report on bush fires that she created. So inspiring to see such growth in only two terms – well done Lynn!!

Genius Hour has been huge in Stage 3 this term. What is Genius Hour? Genius hour is a movement that allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period of time during school. The girls below from 6A (Yasmine and Sarah) made a bubblegum/sour strip type ice cream after their huge success with “Skittles Ice Cream” last year – I was sceptical but wow, did it taste good! Future dessert chefs right here!

More Rugby Success Congratulations to Elizabeth Soliola again!!! Not only was she the captain of the very first Sydney West Girls 7’s Rugby team, that team made the final that lost to Sydney North, but still it was an awesome achievement to make the final ! But the best news was reserved for her announcement in the NSWPSSA Girls 7’s Rugby Merit Side at the end of the carnival ! We are so proud of you Elizabeth – you were outstanding at the carnival and truly deserving of such a high honour. Well done !

Newsletter All newsletters are emailed to families. Electronic distribution is a much better method of communication with families as it allows the school community to enjoy great images of students in full colour without the environmental impact of substantial paper usage. We hope many of our families take up this option in the future. Thank you for taking up this option and saving just that little bit more of our environment.

Parking around the school Unfortunately, I must stress this particular point again. The car parking around the school is at an absolute premium, I get that, really I do. But that doesn’t excuse anyone out there being unsafe in their cars. Quite a few parents have been seen parking in our grounds or behaving in an unsafe manner outside the school, (mostly parents that know the rules !) , double parking, speeding, letting children out of the right hand side of the car, mainly down near Mills St East and Gillivers Lane – you are seriously compromising the safety of the students ! People have even been seen to let children out of the car whilst on the pedestrian crossing ! With parking rangers coming out just about everyday, that could actually end up being a very expensive mistake ! Please ensure you drop your child(ren) off outside the school in a safe manner or walk you children to and from school using the pedestrian access points, not through the car park. Other parents have now complained about our parents double parking in Doodson Ave and Mills St., or even parking over resident’s driveways. What is happening is extremely dangerous and stupid, with students getting out of cars from the wrong side of the car into oncoming traffic. Please do not double park to let your children out. It is against the law and I have no problem contacting the authorities and giving them your license plate number if you are doing the wrong thing out there. We now have a dedicated police officer appointed to oversee this situation, so if you are doing the wrong thing, you will be fined ! I would really appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Principal

Did you know???

For the safety of all students, toddlers, babies and adults, please do not bring dogs into the school grounds, even on leashes. Some children have a genuine fear and it can be quite distressing for them as well as for parents, particularly those with very young children. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Under the Companion Animals Act

1998 No 87 (14.1.e), dogs are

prohibited in school grounds,

(whether or not they are leashed

or otherwise controlled).
