Aloha Division 22 KomOHANA!
I hope everyone enjoyed his or her summer vacation! It’s now time for the school year and more service to our community. Key Club will help us make new friends and experience new things. Lets all enjoy the school year as well as the Key Club year.
If this is the first time or if you read our newsletter before, welcome to the HoNews, the offi-cial newsletter for Key Club Division 22 Komohana. Our newsletter has important information regarding Key Club. As of right now, we have a section for club news, division news, and region news. I will be soon adding a section for district news, international news, and other fun things.
Thank you for all the clubs that turned in their submissions. Without the support and submissions of our Key Clubs in our division, this newsletter would be impossible to complete. I encourage every club to send me articles and pictures from events that you attend. Re-member that this newsletter is for Key Clubbers by Key Clubbers

Aloha Division 22 KomOHANA!
Four words. No, it’s not “HOW DO YOU FEEL?!” –insert yourself doing the cheer here- . The four words are “It’s time for school.” Some of you may be cheering, and others may be groaning. Don’t sweat the small stuff everyone, you’re all amazing leaders and are truly GOLDEN. Please remember, that even though we all are fabulous leaders, we need to be exemplary students as well.
Please remember that as leaders we must do so by example. Always be kind and courteous to the people that you serve. This way you will be the one ripple that will cause a chain reaction of positivity in your community.
I’d like to thank all of the RTC attendees for showing their fabulous spirit. Your charac-ter shone through your gorgeous smiles and alluring laughs that people could just tell that you were from KomOHANA. Thank you all for being such positive and enthusiastic leaders, and overall just wonderful people.
I’m very proud of you all for all that you have accomplished through out the summer and I hope you all will continue to astonish me with the love that you all have for service.
Thank you all for your hard work and dedication. It is greatly appreciated. Till next time, keep smiling and serving with aloha! Remember, you all are GOLDEN leaders.

Aloha Division 22 KomOHANA!
First of all, I can agree with everyone that Regional Training Conference was a very memorable experience! Although it was a first time for majority of us, including me, we can also say that it was the first RTC with the three divisions!
It still feels like yesterday, that we all just had the PTP lunch activity and started saying our farewells. Just think about the day before that—everything felt so different and new to everyone. I’m pretty sure this was out of our comfort zone. Personally, as I found out that there was going to be a Key Club activity, I felt very uncomfortable about it and even the Key Clubbers themselves felt uneasy. But as the activity went on, everyone became good friends with one another.
Back to the present, school has started for everyone. Keep in mind that you should properly balance your duties as a family member, student and Key Clubber. And just a re-minder, don’t forget to meet the minimum hours to become a member in good standing (50) and try to go for the CNH District’s goal of 79 hours!

CLUB NEWS
Elizette Mae Pinter | Club President On August 5, 2013, Aiea High School had a Freshman Orientation. Along with that was an approximately 30 minute event for club sign-ups. This allowed the different clubs of the school to advertise and encourage the freshmen to join. Of course, being one of the active clubs in school, Aiea Key Club was there with a highest level of spirit!
In preparation for that day’s event, our board met over the summer in order to come up with a plan to attract freshmen and the rest of the student body as well. Then, we finally decided to make 2 posters and a video. The first poster was a tri-fold poster which contained pictures of our happy memories; for example, those poses after a service project. This way, students can see that we always have fun in serving our community. Our second poster con-tained candid pictures when we were actually doing work. This assured the students that Key Club is very active in doing service projects. We also included pictures when we were work-ing with other key clubs so that the students can see that they can meet other key clubbers with the same mission and vision. Finally, we created a ‘movie’ of the different pictures we had throughout the year, and a video of our “How do you feel?” spirit cheered by our board. The laptop with the ‘movie’ was then placed on the table by our sign-up sheets, and we let it play for the whole time of the sign-ups. Students got to watch it while they were signing up, or while they were surveying our booth.
Most importantly, during the day of the sign-ups, we did not only wait for the students to come to our booth; some of us actually reach out to them, introduced Key Club, and encouraged them to sign up. There were also officers left in the booth, ready to answer any questions that any freshmen had. Overall, we had a very great turn out! There were 42 freshmen who signed up, and our board was really overwhelmed! And we’re confident that we’re going to have a great turn out with the rest of the student body as well during our next club sign-ups on August 20th. In fact, there were already quite a few students who turned in their applications and dues. And more and more students are asking for applications! That’s so awesome! Every club needs active members in order to have a strong foundation! Aiea Key Club is hoping to have an increase in membership this Key Club year; not only members but ACTIVE members!

As summer came to a close and school was just days away, we helped our advisor and college counselor Ms. Watanabe move from her old classroom up a hill to her new one. It was a very tasking, not to mention laborious process which involved moving numerous college books, brochures, filing cabinets, computers, tables, and other heavy material using rolling chairs and raw muscle power. It took us a few days, to get all of her things moved, but each day we were rewarded with free lunch in return for all of our hard work. We sure did sweat, but it felt good to give back to our College Counselor and thank her for all the hard work she does for us during our senior year.

On July 27th, McKinley High School Key Club officers made a trip to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Center to visit the USS Missouri with many others from Division 22 Komohana, to clean up around the ship. As it was my first time, I did not know what to expect or what to do during the clean up. This service projected started from 8:30AM and ended until 1PM. Between these times, we were not only able to help out with the ship, we were able to learn about the ship’s history too.
Boarding the ship, we were assigned to clean the enlisted men’s galley, which also refers to as the kitchen. In the kitchen we learned this is where they cooked four meals a day for 4,000 hardworking men. We were assigned to do tasks such as sweeping down, dusting, mopping floors and polishing the stainless steel in the kitchen, which were actually pretty sim-ple tasks. It was fun being able to be in the place where thousands of men ate their meals as they fought for our country.
We were all able to have a tour of the ship after we were done completing out tasks and cleaning up. As we learned about the 400,000 and more American lives, including inno-cent sailors that were lost, we became more grateful for what we have done at the clean up. These tasks the Key Clubbers did hopefully made a big difference as we hope to give back to those who were lost in battles and in the tragedy of Pearl Harbor.

The Back to School Supply Drive was a service project that was new to Waipahu Key Club. The purpose of this project was to collect donations so that it can go to the homeless keiki, so they are able to buy school supplies. We were given nets to collect donations from cars. It felt good to get our first few donations. Throughout the whole day, we received quite a lot of donations. Waipahu Key Club actually had some competition that day. There was a little girl across from us that was dancing and smiling, and her net was filled. We thought that we were too old to be “cute” like her but our advisor, Ms.Yoshino, convinced us we could still dance and be as “cute” as she was.
It was actually funny while we were collecting donations. There would always be those people who would joke around with you. I heard that someone asked if we accepted credit cards.
Towards the end of the day I am pretty sure everyone was tired from standing in the sun all day. I really just wanted to collapse right on the sidewalk, but it was all worth it. We collected a lot of donations for the homeless keiki, so that they could purchase the supplies that they need. I was happy to help collect donations for them. I can’t imagine not having school supplies to go to school. I am happy to know that the donations will be going to a great cause.

Are we in a roller coaster?

Once upon a time, two little honus set off on a long journey. They battled fierce traf-fic, tiredness, and butterflies in their tummies with their advisor by their side. Before they knew it, the two honus ended up at their destination. Where did these two honus venture off to? RTC, of course! RTC was incredible this year; there were fun workshops, fun games, fun people—pretty much fun everything. This year, Castle came with two officers and our Kiwanis advisor. Our small count made it a little difficult to go to the workshops, because we would have to split up and because we couldn’t go to all of them, but we still learned loads of information. We learned, for example, how to do treasury, how to communicate, and about new projects, like Project Unify. We were very to-ourselves at the beginning of RTC and didn’t know anyone else, but the simulated Key Club groups really helped the two of us break out of our shell and meet new Key Clubbers (#blueottersftw). The rest of Saturday flew by in a flash and after doing relays, talent shows, and service projects; it came across us that we knew a lot about the other Key Clubbers that we met. It felt like we went to school with them or met with them several times before. When we were getting ready to sleep it hit both of us that Key Club really is a massive Ohana, and we no longer felt like ‘just two honus in a sea of Key Clubbers,’ we felt included and part of a whole. This year at RTC, we learned so much, not only did we learn what was actually taught to us, but also we learned from our experiences. This year we plan to really embrace inclusiveness and reach out to more peo-ple. We plan on taking everything that is given to us and use it to better our Key Club, like member’s talents or ideas. With our gained knowledge and new experiences, we plan on making this our best Key Club year yet.

RTC Experience Tony Huynh | Club Vice President | McKinley High School
Key Clubbers from Division 22 attended the Regional Training Conference (RTC) on August 10-11, held at Iolani School. In the short time I had at the RTC, I managed to achieve things that I have never been able to do. For one, I managed to inhale two burgers and a hot dog. Also, for the first time in my life, I genuinely did a dance that wasn’t ridiculously hilari-ous.
I some how managed to crack open my iron clad shell and join the rest of the world, even if only for a while. Despite the hardships of overcoming what I thought I had as being anti-social, I managed to enjoy myself very much. The time and activities allowed me to bond with fellow Key Clubbers from all over Hawaii. I feel as if I now have other clubs that McKinley can always turn to when we do our interclubs.
Before RTC, I felt as if our Key Cub was estranged from the rest of the Komohana. McKinley Key Club didn’t really have any school to turn to if we ever needed to collaborate. However, I really did get a chance to grow closer to the rest of the Key Club community.
With great experience, there also come with a downside. The workshops that I have attended covered everything that I already know. I would like to thank the officers though, who took their time to plan the information out for us; the information was very thought out! Another downside was the issue of time. It has greatly affected the experience because we did not have enough time to fully go through the second workshop. The general service part of RTC was way beyond helpful. I had no idea there were so many opportunities that we could work with. I honestly thought that we would be working relatively on our own. Instead, we have Nickelodeon (the Big Help), and even Hershies. That blows my mind to a level of highness, so high, that it would in turn blow your mind.

HEY REGION 18! HOW DO YOU FEEL? I’m sure we all felt really fine and good this week-end. This weekend we experienced so many fun filled activities and workshops that taught me a lot about Key Club as a whole. Since we are now in school mode and not all of us are fortunate on having all of the necessary things for school. Everyone that attended brought at least 2 school supplies to children in need. It was amazing how much of a difference we made to those kids. With all of the folder paper, markers, notebooks, crayons, etc. that we brought I’m sure we could have supported a whole family of at least 7 kids! It felt super good to give back to those who don’t have as much as we do. Then, after breakfast we went straight into our 3 different workshops that each taught us something about Key Club. I’m sure that none of us came out of our workshops without something new in our brains. After lunch at least 1 or 2 people from each school broke into small groups where we made “fake” clubs. Each club made their own Key Club Member Application, Club dues check, and a group of officers. Then, each “club” competed against each other in relay races and each race taught us a little something about Service such as recycling and PTP. Even though we were all pooped out from all of that running and sweating, that didn’t stop us from show-ing our best in our performances. All of the performances were wonderfully done consider-ing how much time we had to plan them out. In conclusion to day one, we started serving our community so that’s how we ended it. We made no sew blankets for the sick children at Kapiolani Hospital hoping it would make them smile and keep them toasty warm. The last day was the saddest day of the whole weekend. Saying our see you laters not goodbyes be-cause there is still HCON. However, I’m sure that the mothers and children in the third world countries in danger of Prenatal Tetanus are smiling in joy because of how much money we all raised by auctioning off our region team and their food, raising $1,000+. After experienc-ing RTC for the first time, I definitely recommend everyone to go and makes me even more excited for HCON! I met so many people that made my weekend unforgettable.
