Winter 2012Restoring at-risk neighborhoods . . . one life at a time.

Bishop Manor is a “hot spot” of illegal gang activity with over 1,300 resi-dents and an average of eight people per household. The majority of the population is Latino or Cambodian and 54% of the popula-tion is under 25 years old. Teens and Parents Run Their First Half-Marathons

The holiday season is always a special time of

year and at KidWorks, this is no different. We

began the holiday season with a Thanksgiving

dinner for 100 of our youth provided by Calvary

Church of Santa Ana.

The following week, U.S. Bank decked our halls

(literally) to make our season bright so that

every child, parent, partner, and staff member

experienced the joy of Christmas simply by

walking into KidWorks’ Dan Donahue Center.

What is more, the children at KidWorks each

received a Christmas present thanks to many

of you who participated in our annual toy drive

and we had enough gifts remaining for our

youth in the Building Healthy Communities

Program to distribute them as a way to reach

out and form new relationships with neighbor-

hood families while being able to make their

holiday brighter.

While we celebrated multiple times and in many

different ways, we concluded our year with a

Posada celebration in which our community

came together to celebrate the true spirit of the

season.

To you, our faithful friends and supporters,

thank you from the bottom of our hearts for

making 2011 a year to remember and for giving

our community what it needs to continue its

good work for years to come! n

KidWorks Opens New “Spoke Center”

KidWorks’ student Javier is beaming after running his first half-marathon. He was also our student speaker at the Foundation for Success luncheon!

Once again, Orange County companies came

through in a major way, contributing over

$380,000 that went directly to impact low-

income kids in Santa Ana, through our 5th annual

Foundation for Success luncheon. The generosity

of local companies, individuals, and organizations

towards building a healthier, safer community

continues to astound and encourage us. Thank

you!

Excitement started to build early in the summer

when it was announced that Louis Zamperini,

subject of the NY Times bestselling biography

Unbroken, would be headlining the event. Louis’

life was a dramatic one. It started out much like

the kids we serve at KidWorks - as a youth who

was getting in trouble and was running from

the law. He then continued running in the ‘36

Olympics where he met Hitler, survived at sea for

months after a plane crash in WWII, was tortured

in Japanese concentration camps and dramati-

cally converted to Christianity which led to 40

years of ministry to at-risk youth. His life story

was sure to cause a sellout event …and sell out

it did, only two weeks after general tickets went

for sale! (Note: General tickets go on sale after

sponsorships have all been sold…be sure to get

a sponsorship early this year to guarantee a seat!)

But then, as seems oft to do in Louis’ life, tragedy

struck! Due to his intense travelling schedule and

his age (93), Louis fell gravely ill and was hospital-

ized just days before the event. In Louis’ spirit of

perseverance, we decided to move forward with

the event confidently, as we felt that’s what Louis

would have done and what he would have mod-

eled for our youth! Once again, we were amazed

at our sponsors’ and attendees’ generosity; not a

single person cancelled!

The event ended up being a grand success. John

Naber, a close confidant of Louis’ and fellow

Olympian, delivered an inspiring message about

the life of Louis Zamperini. His determination,

optimism, and ultimately his willingness to for-

give his captors brought the crowd to their feet.

As these are values we hold dear at KidWorks,

we were thrilled that several sponsors invited

KidWorks youth to sit with them so the kids could

hear the inspiring stories as well.

For the third year “Uncle Dan Bears” were

auctioned, honoring the memory of Dan

Donahue, a long time supporter of KidWorks. As

in past years, a matching bear for each auctioned

bear was given to a child at KidWorks to deliver

to a sick child at Children’s Hospital of Orange

County. This value

of giving back and

supporting others is

key to the KidWorks

program, so we are

grateful both for the

support generated

through the bears,

and for the chance

to teach a valuable

lesson in the process.

Again this year, we are deeply indebted to our

three Presenting Sponsors: Bank of America,

Toyota Financial Services, and American Career

College/West Coast University. They lay a strong

foundation each year and we couldn’t be more

grateful.

Last, but certainly not least, our gratitude goes

to Paula and Pat Donahue, who underwrite

Foundation for Success each year. Their commit-

ment and generosity towards building a better

Orange County through the youth in Santa Ana

is tremendous.

We hope you can join us for the next Foundation

for Success luncheon in November…be sure to

get your sponsorships in early! n
