What’s New this month!

Pizza Party and Summer Sing-A-Long

Thursday, June 29 at 12 noon

Swing into summer with Jacques LeDuc and his Karaoke machine as we have another sing-a-long pizza party.

Menu: Pizza and salad (meatball subs and roast beef sandwiches will be available, request at sign-up. Reservations must be in by Tuesday, June 27. Cost: $5. Pizza is provided by Waterview Lodge Rehabilitation & Healthcare (Ashland.) No regular lunch in the Dining Room.

Important Closing Dates

The Senior Center will be closed to the public July 3-7. The center closes each year this week for maintenance, cleaning and to give our volunteers a break.

Outreach services and transportation are still available as the staff will be working.

Veterans Flag Day Dinner Wednesday, June 14 at 5:30

Our Hopkinton Veterans of all ages will be honored with a dinner funded by BayPath Elder Services. TJ’s

will be catering. Menu: steak tips, chicken stir fry, penne pasta, rice, salad, desserts and all the trimmings. Transportation is available if needed. Please contact the Senior Center to make your reservation. We’d love to have a good turnout to show BayPath our appreciation of this new offer.

From the Director’s Desk

T his note will be short; not much room for it in this issue.

I want to thank our staff, volunteers and participants of the Center for their excellent cooperation during this time of sharing our facility with other town departments. With few exceptions, everyone has been terrific. It’s been more difficult for the displaced Town Hall staff than it is for our own to work in a scrunched up manner. Once they are able to move on, it will take us some time to get back to our “normal’. We’ll use this opportunity to paint and spruce up the rooms before moving back into them.

There has been a huge plus side to all of this. Many residents have had to come into the Center who would normally not have and now see what a gem the town has here. Sharing during time of need has many benefits for all involved.

Back by popular demand our Senior Center Art Show - you won’t want to miss it! Our artists have been hard at work all year and are ready to again share their pieces with you. Check out a sampling of what our knitters, painters, potters and quilters have accomplished in the past year.

Art work will be displayed in the lobby and in our main hallway. Please remember we close at 2 pm on Fridays.

Wheelchairs, both standard and transport, require a $25 refundable deposit and are limited to two months.

Electricity is a powerful energy source, let's treat it with respect! Electrical fires are a leading cause of death and can be prevented using the following safety tips. Only use extension cords for temporary power and make sure they are properly rated for the appliance. Never overload outlets or power strips, they should only be used with minimum appliances and electronic devices. Never use frayed wires. Make sure to call the fire department if you notice electrical arcs, short circuits, a sizzling or buzzing sound, an odor of burning. Firefighters can use thermal imaging technology to see excessive heat inside the walls.

CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP Thursday, June 15, 10:30 - 11:30

Many caregivers find themselves in this role suddenly, without notice. For many it is a labor of love but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding and draining. This new Caregiver Support Group meets the 3rd Thursday of the month from 10:30-11:30. Registration recommended.

If you have any questions or if you need care for your loved one while you attend the group, please contact the Outreach Department.

BayPath Elder Services

BayPath Elder Services is a non-profit agency that is funded by our federal government and the Executive Office of Elder Affairs. They offer homecare and related services to residents 60 years of age in Hopkinton as well as surrounding towns.

Also, BayPath provides programs and services to individuals who are under 60 and disabled. Elders must need assistance with at least six activities of daily living skills which include: bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, toileting, housework, laundry, meal preparation, medication management, grocery shopping, money management and transportation. For individuals with a gross income below $27,094 per year, a co-pay for services is required on a sliding fee scale. For couples, the income must be below $38,337 per year and a co-pay is also required. Those individuals and couples above these incomes may enroll and the monthly payment will be a percentage of the cost of the service based on income.

After a referral is made by Outreach, a BayPath case manager will make a home visit to determine eligibility, service plan and cost. The Outreach Department will be happy to make a referral on your behalf and further discuss available in-home services. Contact either Marlene or Joyce in the Outreach Department for a personal office or home visit.

Variety Show—Seniors for Seniors!

Let’s have some fun! Let your talent, entertainment gene and love of all things engaging, encourage you to share your talent with your peers at the Senior Center.

Outreach is cooking up an idea for a Variety Show — let’s have some fun while we entertain each other with a good joke, showing your ability to “soft shoe,” play the harmonica, perhaps read a poem, perform a duet; whatever you'd like to share. There are wells of talent within each of us. Let Outreach help you to discover what you might like to do. Look for Outreach to have a table in the Senior Center foyer on June 6th and 8th, 12:00 to 1:00 to help you decide how to showcase your idea. This program will be presented in October and we’d like to limit the maximum time of a performance to one to five minutes; skits to ten minutes. We sincerely hope you are as excited about this as we are, and that you will sign on!

Meet with fellow job seekers at our bi-weekly networking group meetings. Funded by MCOA, we focus on identifying issues that get in your way of accomplishing your job searching goals and landing your dream job. The interactive and participative format will help you bring your networking, resume, social media and interview skills to a new level.

An experienced Career Coach facilitating a collaborative Networking Group on this journey towards self-realization and fulfillment! Cost: $5 (tax deductible) fee includes all training materials provided at meetings.��

This will be last session held at the Hopkinton Senior Center. We are hopeful that another area senior center will pick up this program. We will announce it if it comes to fruition.

We will be preparing several lattes using fresh ingredients. These ingredients can be chosen to help a variety of ailments from inflammation to arthritis.

What is a MOON?

For people with Medicare, MOON has a new meaning: “Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice”. This newly required notice must be given to some patients who have been admitted to a hospital for “observation”. Hospitals are increasingly admitting patients under observation status.

You may be surprised to know that even if you are admitted to a hospital room overnight, you might not be an “inpatient”. If you are under observation, you are considered an outpatient even though you may stay in a hospital bed for many days. This changes how your Medicare coverage works. The MOON will explain the reason for observation status and how it affects your Medicare coverage.

For example, if you have Original Medicare, with or without a Medigap plan, an inpatient hospital stay of at least three days is needed to get any coverage for skilled nursing facility (SNF) care. If you are under observation, you would not get any follow up SNF coverage paid for, even if it is medically necessary. However, if you are in a Medicare Advantage plan or your doctor is in an Accountable Care Organization, the rules are different and the three-day requirement may be waived.

For further assistance about this or any Medicare issue, contact the SHINE Program. Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and related health and drug insurance programs. To schedule a SHINE appointment, call the Senior Center. For other SHINE related matters, call 1-800-AGE-INFO (1-800-243-

4636), then press or say 3. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name and number. A volunteer will call you back, as soon as possible.

Fitness class fee policy

1 hour classes are paid monthly in advance. Charges ($3-$5) based on number of classes planned for the month. (ex. 3 classes x $3 = $9.) If the class is cancelled for any reason we will make adjustments as necessary.

YOGA for Seniors

Instructor: Teresa Palmieri This class is designed for everyone and begins with breathing exercises, followed by stretching/balancing, and ending with guided relaxation. Postures will be modified to accommodate your activity level.

Exercise with Linda

Monday 10:30—11:30 - $3

Instructor: Linda Bellefueille During aging, there is a gradual decrease in the ability to maintain skeletal muscle function and mass which results in many injuries and reduced quality of life. These fun-filled classes will help to maintain muscle mass and ease of movement.

Exercise with Joni Tuesday 12:30 –1:30 - $3 Instructor: Joni Lebov Low-impact movement workout including muscle conditioning.

Explore the media of clay to make your own creation using the techniques of coil, slab or wheel throwing. Creativity is emphasized and students are encouraged to develop their own style and experiment with glazes. The class is limited to 10 participants.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Our once a month support group, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, will start meeting again in

Elder Law Attorney, Arthur Bergeron of Mirick O’Connell, provides individual free 15 minute clinics. Appointment required.

All donations support the daily activities of the Senior Center that are not covered by Town budget.

Thrift Shop Hours: M-Th 9:00-3:00 and Fri. 10:00-1:00

Bottle & Can Drive ongoing. A receptacle is available by the staff entrance near the Senior Center garage, or, on the 2nd Saturday of the month at the Hopkinton Recycling Center, Wood Street. Other fund raisers: Cell phones and small hand held electronics and Button Batteries. Boxes available throughout town and the Center .

Gift Certificates are available in any denomination; may be used at the Senior Center for everything (Day Trips, lunch, exercise, craft classes, Thrift shop and entertainment events.) Exceptions are personal services i.e., podiatrist, hair and massage.

Senior MassParks Pass

The Senior Pass is available to MA residents 62 year of age or older and is valid for the lifetime of the passholder. The pass covers day use parking fees for vehicles occupied by the pass holder, whether as driver or passenger.

Senior MassParks Pass Fee: Effective March 1, 2015, there is a one-time, nominal fee for a Senior MassParks Pass of $10.00. DCR will continue to honor Senior MassParks Passes previously issued by the agency.

How to Purchase a Senior MassParks Pass: Passes are available at all parks that charge a parking fee during the period that parking fees are charged. Typically, Senior MassParks Passes will be available for sale at the contact station when in season. Parks can only accept cash or check made payable to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and cannot accept credit cards. A copy of your MA driver’s license or other official proof of MA residency and age will be required.

Passes can also be obtained by writing to: DCR MassParks, 251 Causeway Street, Boston, MA 02114, Attn: Senior MassParks Pass Coordinator. Please submit with your request a copy of your MA driver’s license or other official proof of MA residency and age and a check made payable to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. (No cash will be accepted.) The Senior MassParks Pass is not valid at campgrounds and its use is subject to available parking.
