Great training with sprinting techniques by Miss Raybould. Mr G spent time in the October holidays to measure and mark out the running lanes. Children appreciate his hard work as they enjoy the challenge!
Hobby TimeHobby Time Children all had the opportunity to choose the
activity that they wished to be part of. An enormous
thank you to Sarah-Jane Serra who worked in the
Library with an energetic motivated group. The
music was superb as it wafted over the playground.

Another big thank you to our Principal Mr G who also managed to find time to organise the tunnel house for our Gardening Group. The funds to purchase this tunnel house were obtained through the Rural Women’s Group. Plantings will soon be underway. Christmas strawberries perhaps!

HHORORATAORORATA HHIGHLANDIGHLAND GGAMESAMES PTA are again selling bacon butties at the Highland Games. We are lucky enough to secure a new site over in the food area so are hoping that we can make a reasonable amount of money this year. No one else is selling bacon butties so we should be busy!
I have all supplies sorted (or will do once the Fair is over – make sure you come next week please people!!) but really need help on the day. I will need about 3/4 people on at one time and think we will have 3 shifts. 9am-11, 11-1 and 1-3/4pm. I will be there most of the day and setting up and packing up as well so if you would rather come and do that then let me know also.
I would really appreciate you help and will be doing a roster up soon. Sorry I don’t think we get any free passes into the games so we are hoping you are coming anyway. If you were not intending on coming but will to help let me know and I am sure we can come to some arrangement about getting you in.
Let me know if you can help and if so which shift you would like to do (more than one shift is allowed if you can spare the time!) Also feel free to nominate your husband or older children to help and pass onto anyone who you think may be available. It will be a fun day I am sure if we can get a few on board and it a good base to have for children/family going to the games.
Thanks for your support and see you at the fair

Quote of the week… ‘Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today’ - Malcolm X
Welcome back to another very busy term at Hororata Primary School. Buckle in for an action packed nine weeks of Learning, laughter and tears in the classrooms and on the sports fields of Canterbury.
School Athletics Day… Students from Hororata Primary School will participate in a combined school Athletics Day at the Greendale Domain on Friday 31 October 2014. The day involving students from Hororata, Greendale, ‘Windwhistle and Kirwee schools, will provide children from 5-11 years of age with the opportunity to develop their athletic skills and compete with students from other neighbouring schools. The sports are also a great tool to select Hororata students to progress onto the Malvern Athletic Sports to be held at Darfield High School on Monday 17 (PP18) November 2014.
As a representative of Hororata Primary School, we expect all students to wear the school top, sun hats and footwear appropriate to the activity. Students will need their lunch and a drink for the day.
Children will be transported to Greendale by school bus. The bus will depart school at 9.00am and will return to school prior to 2.45pm. Parent vehicles will be used to transport the overflow of students, parents and staff.
Haere mai... I would like to welcome Isaac Williamson (Piwakawaka) to our school. I am confident that your time at Hororata will be both enjoyable and rewarding… welcome Isaac!
Finally, children feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when they know that people in their extended family and community are interested in their education. To reinforce this Hororata Primary School will be opening its doors on Friday 7 November 2014 for families and friends of the school to come in and work alongside children in classes, take part in our annual Spring Festival.
The day marries our traditional Grands’ Day and Pet Show with an opportunity to work alongside children in classes. Parents, Grand Friends and members of our community are invited to take part in any or all, of the following programme:
9.00am Visual Arts… children will be working on a variety of art projects (no special skills required… just time and patience). Visitors are invited to provide a helping hand with fun make & do tasks alongside the children.
10.15am Morning Break… enjoy a coffee or tea and get out and about with the kids in playground... the Sandpit is a popular spot!
10.30am Celebration Assembly… Enjoy performance from each of the classes; sing along with the kids and take part in the presentation of awards and certificates.
11.45am Best in Show Cake Auction… In addition to the above programme we will be running the “Best in Show Cake Competition” again this year for young and old. Cakes will be judged on size, appearance and smell (strictly no tasting). All cakes will be auctioned as a fundraiser for our Education Outside the Classroom Programme.
12.15am Lunch Time… enjoy a picnic lunch (bring own)
1.00pm Pet Show… watch as our school yard transforms into a farm yard for the afternoon.
Entry forms for the Pet Show and Best in Show Cake Competition have been attached to this newsletter.
Thanks for supporting our school

Piwakawaka (Miss Raybould)
Hi everyone We are all enjoying our athletics practise the school is currently taking part in. The children are practising their running throwing and jumping and luckily the weather has worked with us. Next Friday is our Athletics Day at Greendale where everyone will showcase what they have learned. Hope to see many of you there. This week most children will bring home a Basic Facts chart for their year level. The facts they are learning this term will be highlighted so the children are able to practise these at home as well as at school. They are in sequence so previous facts not highlighted will already be known, however continued practise would be helpful as we are trying to be as fast as we can. Good Luck. Regards. Julia
Kea (Miss Stewart)
Hello all,
Welcome back to the last and busiest term of the year! Pet day is just around the corner. That means pet day projects. I recently e-mailed out the list of what needs to be covered. If you have any questions please ask. Pictures of pets and information can be e-mailed to me or brought to school on a usb. We will be publishing the projects at school. All research and draft copies must be done at home. Great to see so many children logging on at home and doing some maths with Maths Buddy! Check out the tasks on fractions! Visit this great site for more maths games http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/math.htm My favourite is Math Man!

Tui (Mrs Foster)
Welcome back to school everyone for what is going to be a very action packed term, the last at Hororata for year 6’s. Athletic sports are looming and most afternoons the children are out practicing. As you all know we have shifted from our old classroom over to admin block and are now situated beside Kea, we are very lucky to have new carpet, new desks, new chairs and new ICT equipment – the class looks fantastic, please feel free to come in and have a look. Homework as usual is sent home every fortnight but the children all have reading and spelling to do weekly. Finally unfortunately the dreaded nits are going around again and we have them in Tui, please ensure that you check your child’s head just in case and make sure if they have long hair that it is tied up. Remember raffle items are due in this week. Jenni

We went biking along a bumpy motorbike track and it had whirly bits in
the middle. As I tried to go around a muddy puddle I splashed into it and
I fell off my bike. The worst bit was getting my shoes all muddy. Jessie
I played with Jake in the holidays. We played with the monster trucks
and Jake kept going faster than me. Logan
I watched the Crudes. They went to a big hill and met a tiger. Isaac
In the holidays I went to Akaroa and the grass was so high it was up to
my neck. I liked playing in the long grass and I built a big hut. Poppy
In my holiday were good because I went to my grandmas. We made a
little hut out of sheets and I liked it. I played Go Fish in the hut with
Grandma and my sister. Jasmine
I went to the pools and I splashed in the pool. I liked jumping in the
Rolleston pools. Emily
I went to my Uncle Wayne’s house in the holidays. He has a cat called
Rumsy. Rumsy had some toys and I liked playing with him. He had a
purple octopus on a pole and he liked to chase it. I wiggled the pole so
Rumsy could catch it. Jackson
In the holidays I played with Dad. We played tag and dad kept on tag-
ging me because he was being silly. Then dad ran inside and hid under
the bed so I couldn’t tag him. I didn’t know where he was but I found
him and I gave him fright. Skyla
In the holidays I had boating lessons. I went in a little boat and I went
around in circles by using the paddles. It was fun because I could play in
it for a long time. Miles
In the holidays I played hide and seek with Dad and Aunty Sharon. Dad
and I hid under the bed and Aunty Sharon sat on it. She felt it was lumpy
so she looked under the bed and saw it was us. Josh T
In the holidays I played Minecraft on the tablet. The game is about sur-
viving the zombie attack. Sometimes the zombie farmers went to attack
the friends in their houses. The friends were eaten by the zombies. I had
fun killing the zombies. Charles
In the holidays I went to the Antarctic Centre with Seth. We went down
the icy slide and it was very slippery. Dad had to help us stand up be-
cause it was so icy. But when dad went down the slide we had to help
him, too. Toby
In the holidays I was playing Minecraft with Charles. We built a brick
house for us to hide in. However a villager came along and Charles tried
to kill it but it was too strong. We found a cave and the best thing was
finding the diamonds because then we made a powerful diamond
sword. We had good time. Xavier
I went to Gran Chris’ house and I made a witch out of craft. The magic
wand was very hard to make. We used a tomato stake and shiny tinfoil.
That made it look like magic. The cloak was just a bit of material. We
bought the hat. I thought it was very very cool. Dustin
I went to the Warehouse and my brother got a paper book. He wrote in
it and coloured in the pictures. It was a yellow troll. Alex
I went on a motorbike ride with my friend Toby. We were zoomed down
a track four times and crashed into a fence. We broke the fence. We
rang Dad and he came down to fix the fence. Seth
In the holiday I went to the Moeraki boulders. There were some rocks
in a circle and you could sit on some of them. My father sat on a big
one. When he picked me up the wind pushed some sand into my eyes.
It was funny. Connie
I made a house with bricks. I put wood on the ground in my bedroom
and I put carpet on the wood. I couldn’t fit a bed in so I thought I would
make it bigger. I wanted to have a sink in the kitchen and some food but
I didn’t have enough money. Brodie
Harry and I played Minecraft on the PlayStation. We were searching for
a ship but we couldn’t find it. It was fun. Josh S
I found a black pocket knife in the paddock by the house. I had to reach
into the hole to get it out. I cleaned it up and then Mum sharpened it.
Robert
Extra Extra…Extra Extra… Children look rather smart in their zip ups and polo tops.
Please check your zip up tops daily to ensure your child is
wearing their own zip up. Also please name them as it would
save a lot of searching when they go missing or if a child is
wearing the incorrect top.
