There is definitely a Spring feel as you enter the Woking Hospice charity shop located in Station Parade, despite the recent wet weather!

Mary Richardson, Manager of the shop explained “Having opened the shop at the beginning of winter, it’s great to see all the new stock arriving. We have some really lovely Spring outfits including a wide range of hats for that special summer occasion.”

Chantelle, a volunteer who works in the East Horsley shop, shows examples of the type of hats on sale which range in price from just £10 and include brands such as Eastex, Accessorise and Kangol. The retail shop plays a vital role in raising funds to enable Woking Hospice to provide care and support to patients and their families who are facing a life limiting illness, both at the Hospice and in the wider community. Thank you to the community for continuing to donate your items to us, quality clothing, books, DVD’s and children’s toys are always most welcome.

Also, well done to everyone who has signed up to retail gift aid – this means that when we sell your item we can claim an additional 25% on the selling price. Ask in store for details.

If you think the Woking Hospice charity shop sounds like a fun place to work, then please consider joining the volunteer retail team – application forms are available in store.

Opening times: Mon – Sat 9.30am – 4.30pm

The Loneliness of a Long-Distance RunnerAlan SillitoeThere’s something so noble about the lone runner, battling the inclement weather like a solitary soldier. This is a story of anti-authoritarianism that will resonate

with anyone who ever had to do cross-country running on a wet and windy November morning, in their vest and pants. Set in a reform school, it’s about integrity and going against the system. Stillitoe’s beautiful and moving novel cut an elegant and poised figure in the literary world and inspired a generation.

Outside Edge: The Stage PlayRichard HarrisWe couldn’t cover sports in this country without turning the spotlight on cricket and there’s nothing more quintessentially English than the play Outside Edge. It follows the trials and tribulations of Roger, who’s having trouble putting together a team to face the British Railways Maintenance Division Yeading East. He’s besieged by his club members’ marital problems and hysterical new girlfriends, not to mention his own wife discovering that he’s been ‘playing away’. Make yourself a cricket tea, prepare to laugh out loud…and don’t forget the umbrella!

Twain’s philosophy that ‘golf is a good walk spoiled’ may be inclined to pick up a five-iron after reading this novel. The story proves that with the right support you can achieve anything. A former golfing champion shows up to compete in a 36-hole showdown against two golfing greats. But the local war hero has one secret weapon: his caddie, Bagger Vance.

The SwimmerJohn CheeverIf you’re more inclined to

sprint rather than opt for the marathon then this remarkable short story could be for you. Neddy Merrill and his wife are spending a drunken evening hanging around at a friend’s house in the suburbs. He decides

that he’s going to swim home via the neighbours’ suburban pools. At first he’s bursting with youthful energy, spurred on by visiting more and more friends, but towards the end of the story he’s drained and in pain until he finally drags himself back home. The story is a strange mixture of realism and surrealism, playing on ideals of the American dream and what happens when the seasons change to winter and old age catches up with you.

Seabiscuit: Three Men and a RacehorseLaura HillenbrandThis is a classic story of seeing the potential in the underdog. Seabiscuit has wonky legs and a rather pathetic excuse for a tail but three men spot his potential and help shape this remarkable animal’s future. Who better to ride him than a partially-sighted, half-crippled, failed boxer? It’s a master-class in triumph over adversity that sees the men rescue Seabiscuit from a life of obscurity and transform him into the stu! of legends.

Fever PitchNick HornbyFor football fans and football widows, this semi-autobiographical account of what it means to support a team will have you laughing and crying in equal measures. The author Nick Hornby has been obsessed with Arsenal since before he could say ‘up the Gunners’. Bordering on insanity at times, this memoir charts both the pleasure and the unique pain of dedicating your life to following a football team. It’s a brilliantly witty insight into the working of a young man’s mind.

The Legend of Bagger Vance: A Novel of Golf and the Game of Life Steven PressfieldThose who follow Mark

The London 2012 Games are upon us and suddenly the country is sports mad. If the ‘Couch Olympics’ are more your style, then how about getting some fresh air and curling up in a deckchair with some of the best sporting novels around?

Corfu is the greenest of the Greek islands, festooned with vines and olive groves and tall cypress trees pointing straight up to the sky. Gentle shores in the east, mostly shingle, sheer cli!s but gorgeous sands in the west, lowlands in the south, mountains in the north, the scenery changes with every bend of the road.

Framed by wooded hills on the west coast, Paleokastritsa is one of the most idyllic spots, all crystal clear waters and crescent-shaped bays meandering around cli!s and rocks. Pink villas peep through the trees like giant candyfloss, boats sail around the coast and into gaping caves, most exciting the ‘blue eye’ where shoals of fish swim in a luminous patch of blue water.

Up on the headland, crowds head for the pocket-sized monastery, keen to set eyes on precious icons, light candles and enjoy panoramic views over land and sea. In the distance, meadows spread across the slopes, sprinkled with pink orchids and wild gladioli and isolated farms tucked in lemon groves. There are secluded coves, sweeping sands and quiet trails where rosemary and oregano leave their scent in the air.

Meanwhile on the east coast, Kerkyra, the capital, stretches across a peninsula guarded by two

Venetian forts. The ‘Old Fortress’ is the most spectacular with ramparts and moat, courtyards, canons, museum and a lighthouse with dizzying views. Mainland Greece is just across the water and in the distance you can see Mount Pantokrator, Corfu’s highest point, just short of 3000 feet.

Down town, the main square is occupied by a cricket ground, complemented by an English bandstand and the elegant Liston Arcade modelled on the Parisian rue de Rivoli. Bars and restaurants spread under the trees, horse-drawn carriages wait for custom and the Old Town beckons, a maze of paved lanes and stepped alleyways, tall buildings and spires jostling for space, hidden squares, souvenir stalls and balconies draped in laundry and flower pots. Cruise ships dock on the western pier, yachts bob at anchor while fishermen unload the early morning catch.

A short distance from the capital is the stylish Achilles Palace, not a ruin of ancient Greece, as one might expect, but a flamboyant 19th century building in neo-classical style,

commissioned by Austrian Empress Sissi to nurse a broken heart. Achilles was her hero and painting and statues pay tribute among colonnades, stucco work and personal belongings of the empress and the next owner, Wilhelm II. But best of all is the fabulous panorama from the gardens, where you might feel just like the beautiful Sissi or James Bond, since the palace featured as a casino in ‘For Your Eyes only’.

The Kanoni peninsula is just a stone’s throw away, home to ‘Mon Repos’, an elegant mansion built by the British and later, summer residence of the Greek royalty and birthplace of Prince Philip. Everyone is welcome to explore the grounds and house now exhibiting centuries of the island’s history. Excavations around the estate have unveiled vestiges of Paleopolis, the ancient city of Kerkyra.

But it is at the end of the peninsula that you find Corfu’s most iconic image. Set on a tiny islet, the Vlacherna monastery comes straight out of a fairy tale, flanked by a single cypress tree and the mere pencil line of a gleaming causeway.

The public is encouraged to bring picnics and make it a fun evening for the whole family. Technology and holidays go together like sun, sea and sangria, and you don’t need to spend a fortune to benefit. For example, noise-cancelling headphones can remove unwanted noise such as the hum of aircraft engines or the drone of bus wheels, and you can pick up a decent pair for as little as £20.

If you’d like to listen to the radio on your travels the Roberts Sports 925 (£16) has FM, MW and LW reception in a handy travel-sized case. If you want UK digital radio too, Roberts also makes the Sports DAB/FM radio, which receives both analogue and digital broadcasts for around £65.

Many of us have MP3 players or phones with built-in music players, and there’s a dizzying range of travel speakers to choose from. At £14.99 the X-Mi X Mini II o!ers a surprising amount of volume for very little money, while Gear4’s StreetParty Compact iPod and iPhone dock is a battery-powered speaker set that can also charge your iPhone or iPod when it’s plugged into the mains.

Some of the most useful travel gadgets are among the least high-tech: the Bite Relief Click (£5.99) promises to reduce the discomfort of insect bites by using a piezo-electric pulse to reduce itching, delivering instant relief

in 5-10 ten clicks. In tests, Which? magazine found that such devices really do “provide a significant degree of relief”.

Another low-tech gadget is the Quik Pod (£23.99), a telescopic arm for your camera that enables you to take self-portraits in front of landmarks without having to find somebody to take the picture for you. There’s even a

little mirror so you can make sure you’re not going to end up with a photo of your torso.

Don’t forget a toolkit, either: Victorinox’s Swisscard Lite mini tool kit is e!ectively a Swiss Army knife flattened to the size of a credit card, and it includes a knife, scissors, an LED light, a screwdriver, magnifying lens, tweezers, pen and ruler. Just don’t take it in your hand luggage if you’re travelling by plane.

2012’s most popular travel gadget is the ebook reader, which is freeing up space in thousands of people’s suitcases. While devices such as Apple’s new iPad (£399) make great ebook readers for planes and trains, they’re useless in direct sunlight: if you want to read on the beach, an

ebook reader with an e-ink screen is a much better option. Amazon’s Kindle is the market leader at £89 for the basic Kindle and £109 for the Kindle

Touch, but the Kobo eReader Touch Edition (£79.99) and Sony Reader Wi-Fi (£129) are very good alternatives.

The one thing most travel gadgets have in common is that they need some sort of power, but you don’t need to carry a charger for every single bit of kit: you can buy USB chargers for around £1.99 that plug into your hire car’s cigarette lighter and that can charge gadgets such as ebook readers, sat-navs and mobile phones, while multi-device

chargers such as the Skross World Travel Adapter 2 (£17.99) o!er USB

device charging via a standard wall socket.

If you think you’ll be spending most of your time away from home comforts, you can even charge your devices with solar power: the PowerTraveller Explorer Solar Power Charger

(around £47) is compatible with most mobile phones, MP3 players, Bluetooth headsets and many other digital devices.

The Wimbledon Open Championships take place in June, commencing six weeks before the first Monday in August. The first event was staged in 1877 by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club to raise funds for a new grass roller. It attracted 22 participants and was won by 27-year-old W. Spenser Gore who received 12 guineas. In 1884, Ladies Singles and Men’s Doubles were introduced.Britain dominated the first 30 years, with the Renshaw twins winning 13 titles from 1881-1889. In 1905, the American May Sutton won the Ladies title. In 1907 Norman Brookes of Australia became the first overseas Men’s champion. The 1920s were dominated by France with the outrageous Suzanne Lenglen (skirt just below the knee!) winning 5 successive titles from 1919, and the ‘Four Muskateers’ of Rene Lacoste, Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet and Jacques Brugnon winning 6 Singles and 5

Doubles. Britain resurged in the 1930s with Fred Perry securing a hat-trick from 1934-36 and Dorothy Round winning in 1934 for a British double. The U.S. then held the Women’s Singles title from 1938-1958 with Althea Gibson becoming the first black champion in 1957. From 1956-1971, the Australians made Centre Court their own.The first professional Championships were held in 1968 and this era has been dominated by 5 players - Bjorn Borg (5 successive singles), Pete Sampras (7 singles), Martina Navratilova (9 singles, 10 doubles), Ste! Graf (7 singles) and Roger Federer (6 singles). The 2012 tournament promises to be as exciting as any. Perhaps Andy Murray can end the 70+ year wait for a British champion? Only time, and the special magic that is Wimbledon, will tell!

After all those weeks in early summer when it seemed unable to stop raining, many plants will have been lulled into a false sense of security. And those of us who look after the plants are also likely to have become a little too used to not worrying about what and how to water to best e!ect, and how to minimise the e!ects of dry weather. So if you’re now finding yourself battling with the e!ects of a more text-book summer, here are my tips for coping:Mulching really does help to keep the moisture in the soil. It’s important to make sure the soil is really well watered BEFORE you apply the mulch, so water well or wait until after there has been a heavy rainfall. Then around the area, covering the roots of the plant (or preferably a bit further) shovel on well-rotted manure, composted bark or garden compost. Don’t forget that vegetables as well as flowers benefit from mulching.A slow but steady supply of water is generally more use and more

appreciated by plants than intermittent heavy drenching. Newly planted trees and shrubs establish better and su!er drought stress less if the soil is never allowed to dry out completely. Installing some perforated or permeable pipe beneath the soil surface or on the surface but beneath the mulch provides just what they need. If you’re making any new plantings for the patio right now, don’t risk them becoming drought stressed before their moment of autumn or winter glory comes. When planting up late season patio pots, decrease the e!ects of the summer sun by lining the insides of the pot with bubble-wrap polythene. When you do need to use extra water on your garden, try to apply it in the evening or otherwise as early as you can in the morning. Less will be lost by evaporation and there will also be less likelihood of plants su!ering scorching. However much you’ve taken a fancy to a gorgeous looking plant in your local garden centre, don’t buy it right now. In
