Charlton Heston's Beverly Hills home goes on the market for the first time priced $12.25 million

The Oscar-winning actor lived in the hilltop estate in Los Angeles until his death in 2008 at the age of 84.

Construction began in 1959 for a total cost of $150,000, while Heston was filming Ben-Hur, and he and his family moved in after filming ended.

The gated three acre property, located above Coldwater Canyon, boats spectacular mountain views from almost every room of the house.

The three-acre property, in Los Angeles, features a stunning two-story library (pictured) located off the master bedroom suite.

Construction on the house began in 1959 while Heston was filming Ben-Hur and he and his family moved in when filming ended.

Another view of the living area shows the grand piano as well the staircase leading to the second floor along a wall lined with photographs and art.

Palatial floors separate parts of the open-plan living area, which allow plenty of natural light into the property.

Works of art decorate the wall of an area that leads out onto the patio. Wooden chairs and ornate lighting features put the finishing touches to the decor.

The two-story library, furnished with a wooden desk and seating, is located off the master bedroom suite reached via a winding staircase.

A screening room is located in a separate building from the mid-century style main house as well as an additional bedroom.

The property also has a beautiful three-story art studio (pictured) which features soaring ceilings and elevator.

The home also has a private office complete with a balcony overlooking Coldwater Canyon in Beverly Hills, California.

The dining area, which features Terrazzo floors and is furnished with a black dining table and chairs, also has access to a balcony.

The master bedroom (pictured) offers a spectacular view and has an en-suite bathroom, one of six bathrooms on the large property.

The property has remained largely the same since it was built in 1959 so its new owners may need to restore some aspects of the house.

Outdoor features include a built-in BBQ, a swimming pool (pictured), tennis courts and a tennis pavilion with a two-story observation deck.

The actor, who lived at the Beverly Hills mansion until his death in 2008 at the age of 84, is pictured right, in front of his tennis courts in 1992.

The property is reached by traveling along long driveway from the private road and accommodates ten cars.
