CISHRM certainly began the year with a bang, as our 2015 Career Expo was a fantastic
event! Over 1,000 job seekers had the opportunity to interact with 86 employers, participate
in three hot topic sessions, and have their resumes critiqued by CISHRM volunteers. A
huge THANK YOU to the 50 volunteers who critiqued resumes and our Workforce
Readiness Committee, led by Katie Stull and Nick Malcom, who worked very hard to bring
this event to our business community and local job seekers.
Another big thank you goes to the sponsors of the 2015 Career Expo – our primary sponsor
Robert Half, as well as JobDig, BirdDog, Midwest Professional Staffing, Portico Staffing,
and Raine Recruiting. Kaplan University also sponsored our online application area, where
applicants could apply for open positions with employers online right at the event.
2015 also brings the introduction of SHRM HR Certifications, and CISHRM is committed to
helping our members navigate the questions and concerns surrounding this change. If you
are currently PHR or SPHR certified, don’t forget that you can obtain your SHRM-CP or
SHRM-SCP a no charge by completing the Online Tutorial Pathway, which takes about 45
minutes.
Study groups for the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP begin on February 4th. Several of our
board members are planning to take the exams this spring so I know we will have a
fantastic group this session! If you’re not sure whether you want to join a study group or just
want more information about certification, please come to the first study group session,
which will be packed with information regarding SHRM Certification, and there is no
obligation to join for the remainder of the sessions. Some professionals who were not able
to obtain a PHR or SPHR credential due to the exempt-level HR experience requirement
may have the opportunity to become SHRM certified, so take a look at the Eligibility
Requirements to see if you now have the opportunity for HR Certification. As always, feel
free reach out to myself or Marilyn Kline-Johnson, our VP of Certification with certification–
related questions.
Finally, I am looking forward to seeing you at the 2015 CISHRM Legal & Legislative
Conference at Prairie Meadows! We’ve just added additional breakout sessions on the
FLSA, harassment prevention, and occupational risk assessment so take another look at
our speakers and sessions.

We are on the edge of a retirement explosion. Baby boomers are turning 65 at a rate of 10,000
per day for the next 19 years, the labor force growth is slowing, and there is a shortage of skills
in the workforce that will be needed in future jobs. This means now more than ever assessing,
developing, and planning for your organizational talent is—and needs to be—a key business
initiative. In this session, Mitch will further explain what succession management means, share
real-life examples of how it has critically impacted large organizations, and discuss things to
consider when developing a succession management strategy.
This program has been pre-approved for 1.00 HR recertification credit hour through
HRCI.
Mitch Maddox is a Technology Evangelist for Ultimate Software. With over 18 years in Human
Resources, Mitch’s experience includes a variety of functional areas such as talent acquisition,
talent development, payroll, employee relations, compensation management, and benefits, with
14 years focused in Human Capital Management systems. In 1999, he founded a consumer
focused Internet company and became an evangelist for e-commerce. As a former regular
guest on CNN, Mitch has appeared on hundreds of radio and TV shows in the United States,
Australia, and Japan. Mitch was also featured in numerous print publications including USA
Today and Time magazine in addition to appearing in People Magazine's Most Intriguing
People issue in December of 2000.
