THE HUB

“I am delighted to welcome you to The Hub – our vision for a world class transport interchange at the very heart of our city.

Together we intend to create something quite unique in this country – a place where all the different types of transport connect. If you come to Nottingham by train, you will be able to travel onwards by tram, bus, taxi, car, bicycle or by walking. The station will become The Hub of The Big Wheel – our joined-up transport system will literally revolve around it.

A convenient, well thought out – and visually breathtaking – rail station linked to every type of public transport sends out all the right messages about a new Nottingham. The traveller will alight at an energetic, purposeful place, at the very centre of a city that is open for business.

The timing of The Hub could hardly be better, for Nottingham’s connections will not just be regional and national, they will be international, too. Eurostar will transform our links to the continent. By simply getting on a train at Nottingham station you will be in Paris in less than five hours. This new connection will not just be physical, it will be mental, too. We will come to think of Europe – and all the business opportunities it offers – in a very different way.

The partners in the project – East Midlands Trains, emda, Greater Nottingham Partnership, Network Rail, Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils, Nottingham Development Enterprise and Nottingham Regeneration Limited – are all committed to The Hub. You will start to see things changing soon, in carefully planned stages.

The station will be keeping up appearances, as its much-loved Edwardian façade is renovated. But it will be all change behind the scenes as The Hub starts to happen – with a new car park, a new passenger concourse, a new booking hall, and a new tram stop as the NET sweeps in over the rail tracks.

We want to see our transport system – The Big Wheel – transformed, as it reaches out around the region, the UK, and to Europe. The Hub will play a vital role in turning Nottingham around.”

John Watson, Chair of the Station Project Board

NOTTINGHAM IS ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S MOST IMPORTANT CITIES. EVERY YEAR IT CONTRIBUTES £11 BILLION TO THE UK’S ECONOMY

It is an official Science City, with half its jobs in the knowledge intensive industries. Its two universities attract an annual £90 million in research funding.

It is a top retail centre, too, consistently rated among the best shopping spots in the country. And it is a city that is in the throes of a far-reaching physical transformation - where new civic squares, pleasant green places and inspiring leisure spaces will link new homes and offices.

Such a city needs connections – to the region, to the UK, to Europe – and within its own environs. That is why The Hub, the scheme to create one of the world’s finest rail stations and public transport interchanges, is of paramount importance to the new Nottingham.

All of the partners in The Hub share the same vision. They want a connected Nottingham where people, their ideas, and their productivity move freely between the city, the region, the country and the continent. The Hub plays a vital part in our ambition to put Nottingham up among the major European cities.

THE HUB WILL MAKE CRUCIAL CONNECTIONS AT MANY LEVELS.

THE HUBEUROPEThe Hub will be Nottingham’s entrance to Europe. Direct connections to Eurostar services through the futuristic London St Pancras will mean that Nottingham is less than five hours from Paris and Brussels.

THE HUB UKThe Hub will also benefit from national rail developments. Over the next few years we can expect journeys between Nottingham and London in under 90 minutes and new services including regular direct trains to Leeds.

In stations, as in life, first impressions count. And in Nottingham the first impressions of anyone arriving by rail have not always been favourable.

All that will alter with The Hub. Passengers will alight into a glamorous yet efficient station complex that unites charming historic features with the breathtakingly new.And The Hub, as its name implies, is at the centre of The Big Wheel, the conurbation’s own transport system. Now that the Government has given conditional approval for the next two lines of the Nottingham Express Transit, three tram lines will soon converge here, gliding into their own concourse directly above the train lines. This gives us the opportunity to construct an interchange where all the types of transport – rail, tram, bus, coach, car, taxi, cycling and walking – directly connect. Such a station would compete with the finest found in Europe, making us the envy of other UK cities.

These connections would, of course, be highly attractive to property investors. The partners in the project have no doubt that The Hub will be at the centre of regeneration, too. The station is at a pivotal position between the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre, soon to be redeveloped at a cost of £400 million, and the Eastside Island Quarter, a £900 million mixed use scheme. Together they are two of the country’s biggest developments outside London.

The benefits will not be confined to the new homes, shops and offices that will cluster around the station. Regeneration will reach deep into the communities nearby, with new buildings, new views, new walking and cycling routes and a greater sense of connection with the prosperous city centre helping them to transform and meet their full potential.

The partners have now been granted £1.5 million to put the detailed plans for the project in place. As our timelines will show you, it will not be too long before the new station and its surroundings really start to take shape. Our city’s transport system - and its regeneration – are set to revolve around The Hub.

“NOTTINGHAM TO LONDON IN UNDER 90 MINUTES”

THE HUB NOTTINGHAM

“THE HUB WILL BE AT THE CENTRE OF OUR CITY’S REGENERATION, AS WELL AS ITS TRANSPORT SYSTEM. IT WILL FUNDAMENTALLY TRANSFORM THE SOUTHERN SIDE OF OUR CITY.”

“Where there is a world class transport interchange, world class businesses will want to come. We have to be planning for the future now by putting in place the developments that will support more housing, shops and offices.

The rail station is at The Hub of a number of key sites. It will help to enlarge the city centre, extending it southwards, along with the new Broadmarsh shopping centre. To the east it will connect with the Eastside regeneration zone, including a £900 million new development of homes and businesses built around an inspiring island water feature. To the south it will link the economically disadvantaged Meadows area to the city centre and all the opportunities it offers, particularly through the new walking and cycling routes that are planned.

The two new lines of the tram, NET Phase 2, are particularly important here, curving to the

south and west of the station, and passing through the Meadows to major new employment sites, such as Ng2, already home to prestige companies. Experience shows that where the tram runs, regeneration follows.

Then there is the site of the station itself, where we can expect to see major new developments take advantage of such excellent and wide-reaching transport links. Already the station has proved a major attraction for international companies like Capital One, on Station Street and for hotels like Jury’s Inn. We can expect many more to follow – The Hub will be at the heart of the new Nottingham.”
