Mother/Son Sweetheart Dinner and Dance

Friday, March 22nd at 6:00PM

Mother/Son Sweetheart Dinner will be taking place on Friday, February 22nd. Your child will

be bringing home a flyer with information about the event in the next couple of weeks. We

really want to make this special for mothers and their sons. We are looking for a few dads

who would be willing to volunteer to make this a special night. (See attached flyer)

PE Corner: A Message from Mr. Mora

Greetings Parents/Guardians,

I want to give you a snippet of what your child will be doing in P.E. as we start the

month of March. The past two weeks all students have been playing adaptive

games in P.E. to show appreciation to people who have varying abilities. We are

going to be doing one more week of adaptive games for our R-word Campaign

week. After Spring Break 3rd-5th grade will be doing fitness testing while K-2nd

grade will be doing a unit on paddles to work on hand eye coordination. I’m

looking forward to all the different work students will be accomplishing this

month, it should be a fun one!

Influenza - what to do! How does the flu vaccine work? (and not work?)

Many strains of the influenza virus (flu virus) exist. A vaccine is created yearly based off which strains were most commonly seen last year. The vaccine causes your immune system to make antibodies that kill the virus if you are exposed. However, the flu virus mutates often and can create new strains. Once this occurs, the virus isn’t susceptible to the antibodies you made from the vaccine. Therefore, you can get sick with flu if you’re exposed to a strain that isn't covered in the vaccine or if the virus has mutated. This year's flu vaccination is estimated to cover 30-40% of the influenza viruses that are making people ill.

Symptoms and When to Stay Home—Symptoms can last from a few days to 2 weeks. Children under 5 without boosters, adults over 65, and those with reduced immunity are at an increased risk for developing further complications.

Flu symptoms often resemble the common cold and include: -Fever (100.5) -Cough -Muscle/body aches, fatigue -Sore throat -Vomiting and diarrhea

If you come down with any of these symptoms, please see your primary care provider within 72 hours of onset. Your child must be fever free and no longer presenting with vomiting and diarrhea for at least 24 hours to attend school.

Provide a doctor’s note to the school if your child will be absent and is suspected to have the flu. The doctor will speak with you about possible treatment options.

How to prevent getting the influenza

GET VACCINATED (Flu shots)

WASH YOUR HANDS. Hand washing is the number one way to prevent communicable disease. Hand sanitizers are not replacements.

COVER YOUR COUGH.

AVOID TOUCHING Mouth, nose, eyes

CLEAN COMMONLY TOUCHED SURFACES REGULARLY. Clorox wipes DO NOT kill all viruses and bacteria and actually CAN SPREAD THEM AROUND MORE.

Rincón del PE: Mensaje de la Sr. Mora

Saludos, padres / tutores

Quiero informarle sobre lo que su hijo hará en PE al comenzar el mes de

marzo. Las últimas dos semanas, todos los estudiantes han estado

jugando juegos adaptativos en educación física para mostrar aprecio a

las personas que tienen diferentes capacidades. Vamos a hacer una

semana más de juegos adaptativos para nuestra semana de Campaña R-

word. Después de las vacaciones de primavera 3-5° grado estarán

haciendo pruebas de aptitud mientras que el K-2do grado estará haciendo

una unidad de raquetas para trabajar en la coordinación ojo-mano.

Espero con gusto todos los diferentes trabajos que los estudiantes

realizarán este mes, ¡debería ser divertido!

Influenza - ¡Qué hacer! ¿Cómo funciona la vacuna contra la gripe? (¿Y no funciona?)

Existen muchas cepas del virus de la influenza (virus de la gripe). Cada año se crea una vacuna basada en qué cepas se observaron con mayor frecuencia el año pasado. La vacuna hace que su sistema inmunológico produce anticuerpos que matan el virus si usted está expuesto. Sin embargo, el virus de la gripe muta a menudo y puede crear nuevas cepas. Una vez que esto ocurre, el virus no es susceptible a los anticuerpos que usted creó a partir de la vacuna. Por lo tanto, puede enfermarse de gripe si está expuesto a una cepa que no está cubierta en la vacuna o si el virus ha mutado. Se estima que la vacunación contra la gripe de este año cubre del 30 al 40% de los virus de la influenza que enferman a las personas.

Síntomas y cuándo quedarse en casa

Los síntomas pueden durar desde unos pocos días hasta 2 semanas. Los niños menores de 5 años sin refuerzos, los adultos mayores de 65 años y aquellos con inmunidad reducida tienen un mayor riesgo de desarrollar más complicaciones.
