The hydrosphere
January 22, 2015
What is the hydrosphere?
All water on earth- in the oceans, lakes, glaciers, rivers, streams, vapor, and underground

Estimate! What percent of the earth do you think is water?
Let's take a random sample. Each time the ball is caught, we will record where the tip of your left thumb is: land or water.

How does water cover the earth? open textbook to page C-10How much of the earth is covered with water?
Draw a pie chart:
Most of the water is the ocean, but water that covers land could be:

What type of water do we drink? Where can you find it?
What kind of water is in the ocean?
Human beings and most animals cannot.........

Draw the glass of water and show what percent would be salt water and what percent would be fresh water.
What percent of freshwater is free flowing? What percent is frozen?
January 22, 2015
Here is a more detailed pie chart of the water on earth
January 22, 2015
Demo- If 1,000 mL of water represented all the water on earth....
*3% or 30 mL would be freshwater
*Salt goes in the other 97%
*Frozen water is located at the poles....close to 80%, so that's 24mL (30 x .8)
*So we will pour out 6mL ( 0.6%) of fresh water that isn't frozen. Only about 1.5 mL is surface water...the rest is underground
*Of this water, only .03mL is clean enough for us to drink!! That's one drop! (about .003%)

What is this water called that we can drink?
Potable Water
January 22, 2015
On a global scale this is 6 million liters per person, but.....
in some places water is plentiful and in other places water is scarce
January 22, 2015
Things we use potable water for.....

Why is the ocean salty?
Remember that water is the universal solvent
Chemicals that have eroded from the earth's crust have dissolved into the water
January 22, 2015
Where has it come from?
volcanoes, particles carried by the wind, sediment broken down on the ocean floor
January 22, 2015
How is salinity increased?
evaporation or freezing of sea ice
How is salinity decreased?
rainfall, runoff, melting of ice
January 22, 2015
What is a hydrothermal vent?
recently discovered features on the crest of oceanic ridges that release dissolved minerals into the ocean
*Water seeps into rocks of the ocean crust, gets heated, and flows back into the ocean
January 22, 2015
What comes out of a hydrothermal vent?
superheated water with large amounts of dissolved minerals
It is estimated that the entire ocean could seep through the vents in 10 million years!

How does the ocean affect the world's climate?
It collects, mixes, and heats water and carbon dioxide
Temperatures all over the world are regulated by the circulation of heat in the ocean
January 22, 2015
Why?
The ocean has a very high density and high specific heat
It is most noticeable near the equator and less noticeable near the poles
