The Criteria of an Ideal Teacher

Ladies and gentlemen, first and foremost, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for

inviting me to The Teachers Day programme. On this very special day, I have een invited to

give a talk on !The Ideal Teacher.

Ladies and gentlemen, the great "onfucius once said, #$ive me a fish and I eat for a day,

teach me to fish and I eat for a life time%. Like "onfucius, great teachers show their students

how to lead a etter life and inspire them to e successful.

Ladies and gentlemen, in &''( )*+"O pulished a ook entitled !-hat makes a $ood

Teacher Over /00 children from some /0 countries aged 12&3 contriuted their opinions.

"hildren from all over the world look up to teachers who inspire their students to e all that

they can e. *umerous studies show the most imperative factor influential to the education

children receive is the 4uality of their teachers. There is no dout that ideal teachers are as

significant as parents. The most important rationale is the fact that children spend

approximately five to seven hours a day at school, with a teacher for almost ten months a

year. 5s a result, we greatly depend on the teachers skills for nurturing the childrens

    knowledge and personality growth.

Ladies and gentlemen, what are the criteria of an ideal teacher +verywhere I go, in my

fifteen years of experience teaching in schools and universities, I meet exemplary teachers,

and I have een enthusiastic in figuring out what makes them excellent teachers. The truth is I

have discovered the intrinsic e4uality of ideal teachers, regardless of the sustantial

differences etween them in terms of style, personality, goals, and pattern of interaction withstudents. $ood teaching isn6t aout techni4ue. Teachers who have tremendous knowledge ut

fail to communicate it to their students will only make them ored or frustrated. To e honest,

we admit that good teaching often has less to do with our knowledge and skills as compared

to our attitude towards our students, our su7ect, and our work.

Ladies and gentlemen, I strongly elieve there is a selection of tools that allow these ideal

teachers to create and sustain connectivity with their students. 8irst of all, $ood teachers have

a sense of purpose. The ideal teacher knows what his students expect, and he makes plans to

meet those expectations. 5t the same time, he, too, has expectations of success for all his

students, ased on the goals he is trying to achieve. 8or example, if he wants to prepare the

students for employment, he expects punctuality and good attendance. 9oreover, if he wants

the students to ecome etter, more involved readers, he should allow ample time for reading

    and provide access to ooks.

econdly, the ideal teacher knows how to live with amiguity. One of the greatest challenges

of teaching stems from the lack of immediate, accurate feedack. There is no way to predict

precisely what the long2term results of the teachers work will e. :ut if he has a sense of

purpose regarding his choice of strategies and materials, focussing on what can e controlled,

and trusting that thoughtful preparation makes good outcomes more likely than ad ones, he

is cultivating expectations of success for all the students, he will e more in control on that

    unpredictaility,

*ext, $ood teachers adapt and change to meet student needs. ometimes, a great lesson plan

does not ensure a great lesson. The ideal teacher ensures that students will learn, and when

learning doesn6t happen, he will devise new strategies, think of new ways, and generally do

anything possile to revive the learning process. ;e will not give up on slow achievers. To

him, having a good methodology is not as imperative as having students engaged in good

    learning.

Ladies and gentlemen, the ideal teacher is reflective. ;e constantly thinks aout and reflects

on the classes, the students, the methods, and the materials used in his lesson plans. ;e

compares and contrasts draw parallels and distinctions, review, remove and restore. ;e

understands that failing to oserve what happens in his classes on a daily asis disconnects

him from the teaching and learning process.

Last, ut not least, the ideal teacher is a good role model . ;e is an icon and he leaves life2

long impressions on the students and influences their mind in a positive way.
