CHAPTER ONE

Background of the study

Motivation is a common place aspect of every one’s life,

yet it is a difficult concept to define, let alone apply within an

organizational perspective. Motivation refers to the forces

leading to behavior directed toward the satisfaction of some

need or it may also referred to a state or a condition of being

induced to do something. Needs may be thought of as

something within the individual that prompt him to engage in

behavior which is directed toward the attainment of objectives

(goals) that he perceives to be capable of satisfying his need.

Hunger and the desire for financial security are needs or

motives behaviour designed to satisfy these needs is motivated

behaviour or motivation.

Motivational policies are led down rules that organization

adopt to appraise job performance of employees in an

organization therefore motivational policies are essential tools

that the organization makes use of in achievement of

organizational set goals and objectives.

Not all behaviour is motivated; some behaviour is habitual

or reflexive. But motivated behaviour is that which the

manager can understand. As noted, motivated behaviour can

be subdivided into individual and group behaviour effective

management requires a working knowledge of both aspects of

behaviours. Successful managers must also understand the

causes of such behavioural patterns; this process will then

provide the basis for understanding why people do what they

do.

Inyang and Akpama (2002) maintain that motivation is the

will to act. The act of motivating people starts with learning

how to influence individual behaviour. Once you are able to

understand this, you are more likely to gain the result that both

the organization and its employees want.
