The Impact Story(that scales)

Why do we measure impact?

Why do we measure impact?

+ Funder required+ Contributes to customer value

proposition+ Test theory of change

What’s the difference?

+ Measurement

+ What is happening? (outputs)

+ Monitoring

+ Can we consistently generate similar results? (outputs)

+ Evaluation

+ Are we generating outcomes and achieving our mission?

Good impact measurement is:

1. Timely2. Automated3. Directly correlated with venture performance

Outputs vs. Outcomes

Output = direct result of your intervention (# of students who received training, # of jobs created, $$$

saved, etc.)

Outcome = Transformative or long term behavioral change at the individual / unit

level

Outcomes are hard.

+ Depending on the sector, may take years

+ Can be incredibly difficult to find/track/get accurate reporting

+ Causation vs. Correlation+ Random Controlled Trials

are expensive and contrived

+ Attribution decreases over time

Outputs make life easier

Ask yourself:

+ What data already exists to support my intervention?

+ Benchmarks

+ Research

+ Near peers

+ What is my unit theory of change?

+ Divide inputs/outpts

Let’s take it one step further with a “Pixar Story, ” or theory of change, to gut check if the metrics you selected make sense as

part of your Impact Story

Once upon a time…Every day…One day….Because of that…Because of that…Until Finally….

Once upon a time Over half of Americans 18-35 have less than 1 paycheck's worth of savings would not be able to sustain a financial shock of $500

Every day thousands opportunity youth come of age without an active savings account and without the financial skills to achieve their life goals.

One day Best social enterprise ever appeared! A financial literacy app designed for youth tied to relevant financial milestones + products

Because of that users increased their financial literacy

Because of that users adopted financial products and becomes and active saver

Until Finally a foundation of financial resiliency upon entering adulthood

Let’s look at an example.

+ Start with the Pixar Story+ Project out venture and impact

performance+ Metric+ Definition+ How it’s collected /

observed+ Analyze unit impact economic

On your own

+ Start with the Pixar Story+ Begin to think about how you’ll

measure outputs+ Metric+ Definition+ How it’s collected /

Share out

In pairs, 20 mins each

1. 3 min - Review your Pixar story

2. 5 min: What are your 2 key outputs (indicators of future outcomes)

a. Name

b. Definition

c. How it’s measured/Observed?

3. 5 min: What is the expected relationship between venture performance

and these outputs?
