The Inaugural 2012 Organometallics Symposium T he rst Organometallics Symposiumdebuted at the Philadelphia ACS Meeting on August 21 and 22. 1 It consisted of an afternoon oral session, a morning oral session, and an intervening evening poster session. The event was cosponsored and generously funded by the organic and inorganic divisions of the ACS, and the journal also contributed resources. One goal of the symposium was to recognize some of the younger authors who represent the future of the eld and the journal. Toward this end, a panel selected eight individuals who had published their rst papers as corresponding authors in Organometallics during the three years preceding the abstract deadline. This was a dicult task, and we wish it would have been possible to honor more early career chemists who have supported the journal with very ne contributions. Those chosen are designated as Organometallics Fellowsand are given in Table 1. The oral presentations of the Fellows were divided into two sessions, one with a more organic focus and the other with a more inorganic focus. These were capped by talks by two senior organometallic chemists, designated as Organometallics Lec- turers. The inaugural honorees were Professor Amir Hoveyda of Boston College and Professor Kyoko Nozaki of the University of Tokyo. Photographs of each Fellow and Lecturer accompany this article (Figures 1-10). The poster session consisted of 67 contributions, largely by graduate students and postdoctorals. Here, we decided to have some funwith an experiment. All readers are aware that the corresponding authors or bosseshave many opportunities to publish articles in which photographs and biographical sketches are included. There are fewer chances for co-workers. Thus, we Published: November 12, 2012 Table 1. The Inaugural 2012 Organometallics Symposium

The first “Organometallics Symposium” debuted at thePhiladelphia ACS Meeting on August 21 and 22.1 It

consisted of an afternoon oral session, a morning oral session, and an intervening evening poster session. The event wascosponsored and generously funded by the organic andinorganic divisions of the ACS, and the journal also contributedresources. One goal of the symposium was to recognize some of the

younger authors who represent the future of the field and thejournal. Toward this end, a panel selected eight individuals whohad published their first papers as corresponding authors inOrganometallics during the three years preceding the abstractdeadline. This was a difficult task, and we wish it would havebeen possible to honor more early career chemists who havesupported the journal with very fine contributions. Thosechosen are designated as “Organometallics Fellows” and aregiven in Table 1.

The oral presentations of the Fellows were divided into twosessions, one with a more organic focus and the other with a

more inorganic focus. These were capped by talks by two seniororganometallic chemists, designated as “Organometallics Lec-turers”. The inaugural honorees were Professor Amir Hoveydaof Boston College and Professor Kyoko Nozaki of theUniversity of Tokyo. Photographs of each Fellow and Lectureraccompany this article (Figures 1−10).

The poster session consisted of 67 contributions, largely bygraduate students and postdoctorals. Here, we decided to “havesome fun” with an experiment. All readers are aware that thecorresponding authors or “bosses” have many opportunities topublish articles in which photographs and biographical sketchesare included. Editors took some photographs as we toured the posters. Wepromised the presenters that if their advisors were to direct apaper derived from their poster to Organometallics, their picturecould be included with the published article (or an equivalent

picture of them and their advisor standing in front of theposter). Some representative photos from the poster session are

shown below (Figures 11−14). We also promised thepresenters that their biographical sketch may contain a one-

or two-sentence summary of their career plans, perhaps helpingthem with future employment. This issue contains the first

article derived from a poster at the OrganometallicsSymposium,2 and more will follow in the coming months. The next Organometallics Symposium will be held at the

spring 2014 ACS meeting in Dallas. We look forward towelcoming our readers and the next generation of Organo-metallics Fellows, Organometallics Lecturers, and posterpresenters to that event.
