We are so fortunate to not only have received numerous individual responses from recipients of the various projects but also the following:

HeIlo Independence Elementary 2nd Graders:

We just wanted to say thank you so much to you and all of the kids who put together the goodie bags for the Soldiers of 1st Platoon, 82nd Engineer Support Company. It truly means the world to us to receive such acts of kindness, the letters were truly heartwarming and the treats were delicious! Words cannot describe how grateful we are to have support from programs like yours, it is truly amazing to know that no matter how far we are in the world we still have the love and support from so many wonderful people. Attached is a picture that the Soldiers wanted to send to all of you as a GIANT THANK YOU for the continued support. God Bless and please tell those amazing second graders, we salute them.

I just wanted to thank you once again for the wonderful treats you sent for our homebound and frail seniors. The treats were appreciated by all! They look forward to your delicious muffins, beautiful artwork, and kind notes all year! Enclosed are a couple of pictures of some of our seniors that attend our Encore-Adult Day Program. They were very excited to get the treats- the gentleman in the picture was so excited to get the muffin, he started eating it right away, and I almost couldn’t get a picture!

Thank you again for thinking of the homebound and frail seniors. Your kindness means so much!

Independence Elementary achieves Evergreen Status, the highest ranking for Michigan’s

Green Schools Program for 2013-14!

We were able to achieve this award due to incredible school-wide participation and the

diverse, creative and student-directed activities accomplished by the Independence

Elementary Community this year. Through educational environmental awareness events,

programs and activities, students of all ages learned how we can make sustainable choices an

integral part of our school year. Some of the projects included:

• The Garden Club students created an incredible Learning Garden in the courtyard at

the rear of the school. The student members and volunteers have been working so

hard to grow their ideas. Please come see what they have already accomplished! A

Clarkston Spark video describes their progress to date.

• The 5th grade team initiated a service learning project to investigate composting

cafeteria scraps and using the finished compost to enrich the soil of our garden beds.

They were also awarded a Clarkston Foundation Classroom Grant to support their

efforts.

• A recycling program run by Mr. Lamb collects a large variety of materials throughout

the year. The electronics waste collection event was also a huge success this year,

diverting 17,000 pounds of e-waste.

• Students in Dr. Gretka's class observed the different types of birds that came to our

bird feeders. They sold and made suet cakes and the money raised went toward

purchasing items for bird habitat and seed. The restoration of habitat for the Eastern

Bluebird is being coordinated with a Clarkston Junior Girl Scouts to install birdhouses at

the school.

• Michelle Cray, a parent volunteer, and manager at Oak Electric, will be providing an

alternative energy presentation (with solar panels) and interactive activities in

celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd to the entire 3rd grade team.

• Kindergarden students in Mrs. Chamberlain’s class learned the importance of

protecting our watershed. They applied what they learned in class and during a

presentation by Camila Duarte (environmental engineer and parent volunteer) to

create small water filters as teams of scientists.

• Mrs. Bell’s 1st and 2nd grade class learned about the monarch butterfly’s life cycle with

live butterflies in the classroom.

• Mrs. Zittel's 2nd grade class participates in sponsoring an endangered and threatened

species for the last 6 years.

If you would like more information or would like to become involved with our Green School

activities please contact: Chelsea O’Brien at [email protected] or Camila Duarte at

News from the News from the News from the News from the Parent Teacher OrganizationParent Teacher OrganizationParent Teacher OrganizationParent Teacher Organization

As we near the end of the school year, there are some very exciting events coming up.

Teacher Appreciation week is arriving quickly, and if you would like to help our parent

volunteers reward the teachers for a job well done, please contact Kim Cooper (PTO Treasurer

at [email protected] ) to see how you can lend a hand this week. We are looking for

donations, small gifts, as well as food preparation so that we can offer some meals throughout

this week to the staff. Thanks in advance for your help.

Also, we are lucky at Independence Elementary to have so many parents go the extra

mile to help us with passive fundraising methods. Feel free to read the section of this

newsletter that goes into these details. We have nearly 80 parents that participate in Kroger

Community Rewards (Kroger Cash). This money all goes towards classroom enhancements

throughout the year, and you will need to re-apply for this at the beginning of May. Thanks for

helping out.

We wanted to give a special thanks to our Independence Township District Library as

well (http://www.indelib.org ) for supporting our area and school in many ways. As we get

closer to summer break, don’t forget to utilize all that the library offers to keep your young

ones engaged. They have a great selection of ebooks, children’s books, cds, films, and

magazines. Our community is definitely enhanced by having this resource so close to us all.

Our school wouldn’t be the same without all the help from our parent volunteers.

Thanks for all you accomplished during SOCKS Day and the myriads of other events this year. If

you would like to be involved more next year, we have a few opportunities at the moment

that may apply to you. The Independence Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is

now looking to fill the following volunteer positions for the 2014-2015 school year. Please e-

mail me to volunteer for any of the positions below [email protected] :

1. Member-at-Large PTO position(s): Get involved at Independence Elementary

by assisting the PTO and school with special events and projects during the

year. Attend monthly PTO meetings and help out where you can

2. Fun Run Co-Chair: Work with the Fun Run Chairs to coordinate our most

important fundraising event. To date, this has serves as the PTO’s sole

fundraising event of the year, and occurs in late September. We are hoping to

fill this position immediately, so that planning can go into effect for next year.

3. Teacher Meals Chairperson: A lunch is provided for teachers to welcome them

back to school and on conference nights (2 meals in the Fall and again in the

Spring). Teachers are provided with meals from parent volunteers.

4. Two Market Day Chairpersons: A frozen food service provided for the families

of the school. Proceeds from the orders contribute towards the many "extras"

for our school. The food comes in and is distributed on the second Tuesday of

each month. Volunteers are needed from 2:30-4:30 pm on designated Tuesdays

to help sort and pack orders.

Sincerely,

Ray Lebert

IE PTO President

In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Clarkston Community Education is pleased to offer the nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention program to children entering grades one through six. It’s an exciting, weeklong summer adventure in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) that’s all about big ideas. Children will work together to seek innovative solutions to real-world problems and sharpen critical 21st century learning skills as they rotate through four modules that reinvent summer fun. This unforgettable week begins on July 21 – July 25, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, when Clarkston Teachers – Beth Rogers and Amy Campbell – will direct the Camp Invention MORPHED!™ program at the Community Education Building. In the Super Go™ module, students design a small, motor-powered vehicle that zooms! Girls and boys will collect energy coins along the way for building ramps, bridges and tunnels for the Super Go Road Rally. Participants will receive personalized challenges from National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees that will ignite a spirit of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship during the Design Studio: Morphed™ module. Throughout the Amplified™ module, children invent bionic gadgets while journeying to acquire superhuman senses. Time will be spent encountering illusions and discovering if they are a supertaster. Finally, Camp Invention’s flagship module, I Can Invent: Pinbug™, allows participants to use tools to upcycle electronics and build an epic, insect-themed pinball machine! Local educators will facilitate program modules and enthusiastic high school and college students will serve as Leadership Interns – ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children. Every registration includes a complimentary Camp Invention t-shirt. Availability is limited, so visit www.campinvention.org or call 800.968.4332 to reserve your child’s spot today!
