Whilst out and about exploring our very fine city be sure to take note of our green “Independents” window stickers. These highlight our lovely little independent businesses competing for your attention with the high-street big boys. So please don’t just stroll on by: pop in and see us. Whether it’s eating, drinking, shopping or dressing-up - we love what we do, so come and find us! Winchester, as you probably know, was England’s ancient capital. In 871, at the tender age of 21, Alfred was crowned King of Wessex and established Winchester as his base. As England’s first king Alfred the Great is probably Winchester’s most famous resident but did you know that writer Jane Austen is buried in the north aisle of the cathedral nave? You can find her house located on College Street. Look out for the unassuming, mustard-coloured house with an oval blue sign above the door. How apt that actor Colin Firth, Winchester-born and bred, played Jane’s very own Mr Darcy in 1995. Have you heard the story of William Walker, the deep-sea diver who saved the cathedral from collapse? And did you know that mountaineer George Mallory, whose pioneering exploration of Mount Everest ultimately ended in tragedy, was educated at Winchester College (along with many other famous names). Our beautiful city is steeped in history, legend and lore, and there are fascinating stories to uncover at every turn. So, speaking of kings, why was King Alf so great? Well, not only was he famous for bashing the Vikings, he also encouraged education among his subjects. His defining moment of greatness came when he translated books from Latin – which only the elite could understand – into English, the common language of the people. Thus a new age of literacy and learning was born. Winchester boasts an astonishing wealth of historic buildings – any walk through the city might see you stumble across a former royal palace or ruined abbey! Here are a few off-the-beaten track examples to look out for. Firstly, Winchester College: founded by Bishop William Wykeham in 1382, it’s just a stone’s throw from Jane Austen’s house. Over the centuries it has become one of the most prestigious public schools in England. Next, St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate: a tiny gem of a medieval church, built over a gateway arch (which, incidentally, is one of only two city gates remaining, and through which the king entered the city. It’s also the gateway to the Kingsgate Village of independent shops). Finally, Cheyney Court in the cathedral close, where you’ll find an attractive timber- framed building dating back to the 16th century, which served as a venue for the Bishop’s Court for the Soke of Winchester until 1835. Prefer an overview of the city? Take the short climb up St Giles’s Hill: from the top you can trace the sweep of medieval and Georgian buildings, laid out according to the original Saxon street plan. So have fun exploring! Arty-farty: The Hat Fair is the UK’s longest-running festival of street-performance art (and has nothing to do with hats!) Gruesome: The Square is the site of the City Museum (map B3), and also where the unfortunate Lady Alice Lisle was publicly beheaded in 1685, the first casualty of “Hanging” Judge Jeffreys and the “Bloody Assizes” Big-screen blockbusters, filmed here: Les Miserables, The Da Vinci Code, Elizabeth, The Riot Club... Celebs: Actor Colin Firth, comedian Jack Dee, model and TV presenter Alexa Chung WHAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT WINCHESTER...

Finally, Cheyney Court in the cathedral close, where you’ll find an attractive timber-framed building dating back to the 16th century, which served as a venue for the Bishop’s Court for the Soke of Winchester until 1835. Prefer an overview of the city? Take the short climb up St Giles’s Hill: from the top you can trace the sweep of medieval and Georgian buildings, laid out according to the original Saxon street plan. So have fun exploring!

Arty-farty: The Hat Fair is the UK’s longest-running festival of street-performance art (and has nothing to do with hats!)Gruesome: The Square is the site of the CityMuseum (map B3), and also where the unfortunateLady Alice Lisle was publicly beheaded in 1685, thefirst casualty of “Hanging” Judge Jeffreys and the “Bloody Assizes”Big-screen blockbusters, filmed here: Les Miserables, The Da Vinci Code, Elizabeth, The Riot Club... Celebs: Actor Colin Firth, comedian Jack Dee, model and TV presenter Alexa Chung
