D110A VIOLENT WEEK: Orange County FM Station

Hit By Radical Group; Jock Shot In Des MoinesKY MS -Santa Ana (a suburb of

Orange County, California) was afree -form progressive stationuntil about a month ago. Therecent change was to a highly -formatted rock album station.Apparently someone or somegroup of listeners did notespecially like the change. OnTuesday (27), between 2 and 6 AM(when the station was normallyoff the air) their transmitter wasdismanteled and several partswere stolen. They were off the airfor 24 hours while engineers fromall over Southern Californiavolunteered their spare parts andexpertise to get the station backon the air.

The following Thursday afterthe incident, KYMS received aletter from a group callingthemselves the E.C.L.A., takingresponsibility for the break-in andclaiming the new programmingwas unacceptable and that itmust revert back to free -formradio. The letter ended with athreat that "no lock was strongenough" to keep them out, andthat the rampage would continueagainst KYMS unless theyreturned to progressive radio.

KYMS has employed armedguards at both the studio andtransmitter locations. The FBIhas been called in.

"LONG JOHN WE EK END"KSEA-San Diego ran a "Long

John John Weekend" over LaborDay giving away Elton John andOlivia Newton John albums andspecial autographed sets of longjohns, autographed by Elton andOlivia.

What a way to start off in a newtown! Paul Stewart had justarrived in Des Moines to takeover the all-night slot at KFMG(from KFMQ-Lincoln). He nosooner walked into the lobby ofthe downtown Holiday Inn whenhe was shot in a hold-up that wasalready in progress at the time ofhis arrival.

"I was just trying to find amotel,,, Stewart said from hishospital bed last Monday. "Icouldn't find a place so I decidedtotry the Holiday Inn, since it wasthemost expensive place in townand there might be a vacancy. I

walked in the door as the guy wascoming out. I heard all the noiseinside, but I guess I was too tiredto think about what might havebeen going on."

Stewart says he remembers"grabbing" at the assailant'sgun, but has no recollection of

ever touching the sidearm orgrappling with the gunman beforebeing shot... "The next thing I

remember is being here in thehospital."

Stewart was lucky. Two people(a security guard and anassistant night auditor) wereslain by the assailant, who is stillbeing sought by police as this iswritten.

The shooting has not souredStewart on DesMoi nes : "With justone exception, the people of DesMoines are super."

He is in good condition, thehospital says, and will begin atKFMG in three weeks.

KYAC COKE PROMOKYAC-Seattle ran the summer

KNBR's Ron FellTakes Issue WithRKO Decision

Space limitations prevent usfrom printing all of the manycomments we've received re-garding the recent RKO de-cision to not play singlesthat are over 3:30 in length.Of those that disagree withthe decision, the followingletter is perhaps the mostrepresentative:

Dear R&R:On the subject of

shorter new music forsome of the nation's"top 20" stations, itmust be rememberedthat it was the RKOstations back in themid -sixties which firstgave contemporaryradio a vasectomy. But what bothers memore than the actionsof their programconsultant is that theRKO stations arefaithfully imitated bythe lemmings of "top20" radio all aroundthe country.

The challenge is nowat the doorstep of therecord companies andtheir artists. We willquickly find out whothe whores are and ifthere are any artistsleft.

Both radio andmusic have a greaterobligation to the publicthan to monitor thelength of their music.Imagine Picassoworrying about a

museum's not hangin ghis work because hepainted on too large acanvas. Sincerely,

Ron FellKNBR

KLIF's WallaceExplains Station'sNew Music Policy

About the controversysurrounding the fate of KLIF'sMusic Policy (which for years hasprojected a "breakout" image forthe station), new PD ToddWallace commented to R&R:

"Obviously we're not at libertyto discuss specific strategy, but itwould be safe to say that our basicmusic design will be dictated bythe core target audience's massacceptance of an individualrecord (rather than a

performance's mere mass"appeal"). Reach and frequencycalculations will figure heavily indetermining rotational patterns.Categorization of music will beinfluenced by a twice -weeklyreference point provided by ourMARS Music Graph (Mass

RADIODIAL -A -PRAYER, DIAL -A -JOKE

Now It's "Dial For Compassion"You've no doubt heard of "Dial -

A -Prayer" and "Dial -A -Joke" bynow, but New York's WNBC hasadded a new and novel twist to therecorded telephone sweepstakes:"Dial A Little Compassion."

A phone call to area code 212-999-6262 brings a husky voicepurring the following 35 -secondmessage: "I think you are themost exciting woman I have evermet." A pause, a deep breath, andhe continues: "I often wonder ifthe real man in your life reallyrealizes how lucky he is."Another pause, a little longer thistime, and a whispered: "I do. Andwhen you think that nobody elsereally cares, please remember," -pause-- "WNBC radio does."

That little message has alreadybeen heard by over 1,000,000 NewYorkers. Secretaries, housewives, overweight andunderloved women of everydescription are among the 33,000that call the number daily sinceits inception several weeks ago.

"Compassion" is the brainchildof 34 -year old Pat Whitley, program manager of WNBC. Heboth writes the copy and recordsthe entire promotion himself.

According to Whitley, theywere flooded with so many callsinitially that they've had to installspecial telephone equipment thatcan take up to 2000 callssimultaneously.

"It's an after -lunch thing.People leave the phone numberon their secretary's desk, tellingher she received a call while shewas out to lunch. They call, howl, and hand the number on tosomeone else. It's been spreadinglike crazy, mostly ,through word-of-mouth. Some women call againand again, because they've had abad day or hard words from their

boss and just want to hearsomeone say something nice."

The station promos are alongthe lines: "33,000 people havereceived Compassion today. Haveyou? Call 999-6262."

Whitley plans to stay with thepromotion for as long as theresponse is there. Judging fromthe initial action, that may bequite some time.

George Michael (right) signs a five-year pact with WABC VicePresident & General Manager George H. Williams. Michael takes overthe 6-10 PM slot beginning September 9.

The "Bad Boogie Gassers" (actually mini cars) were raced recently by WPOP/Hartford

Warner Brothers artist Jesse Colin Young paid a visit to KLZ-Denver'sstudios last week. From left: George Garrity, Warners; Bert Keane,Warner Brothers Denver Promotion; Dick Bo, KLZ jock; Young, andBill Struck, Program Director.

RECORDSRECORDINDUSTRYNOTES

by Candy 'TimkenA dimunitive blonde from Utah is proving to the Record Industry that

it is still possible to make it big on your own without having themachinery and resources of a manufacturing conglomorate behind you.Ms. Jill Jones was managing and producing an unknown singer, andsensing a true talent, she cut an album with him. After taking the LP toseveral record companies and being summarily rejected, she decidedshe would press, distribute and promote a single off the album herselfusing Salt Lake City as a tester market.

Gary Waldron at KCPX listened to the record, believed in it, andseven weeks later the unknown Rance Searle had a top five record onWaldren's playlist titled "May I Keep You." The rest of Utah took thehint and soon Searle was top five in the State. Jill gives credit to DaddyDew Drop (remember his hit, "Chick -A -Boom?") for his advice to "do ityourself," Alta Distributors who made sure the record retailers had therecord and indy promotion men Harvey Cooper and Rich Pa ladino whotook the single to Mickey Eichner of Columbia Records. CBS bought themaster giving Searle a five-year contract option under Jill'smanagement (she also retains the publishing.) The record is beingreleased nationally in the next two weeks. It's nice to know this industryis still flexible and has enough vision to allow some dreams to cometrue.

Another battle is shaping up between two singer songwriters who arecovering the same song on two major labels. Tim Moore who wrote"Second Avenue," his first release for Elektra Records, is being pittedagainst the well known Garfunkel who just released Moore's song onColumbia Records. Moore, whose writing abilities have earned himthree records in the finals for The American Song Festival Top Teh BestSongs, culled from 7,000 entries, is a quiet affable singer whose home isin Woodstock, New York. Moore was in Los Angeleslast week to finalizehis agreement with Elektra-Asylum's David Geffen and his manager'sHarry Goldberg and JohanaVigoda (who is Stevie Wonder's lawyer.) I

had a nice chat with Tim who is flattered that Garfunkel picked his songto record, but is also hoping that he himself will have the hit. Tim toldme he decided to go with Elektra after several bids fromother labels as he feels Elektra is the most prestigious for anartist with its "tiffany" approach to its artists. Tim will either go backin the studio to cut a new album or will be out on the promotion road for"Second Avenue" if it shows those lovely signs of being the hit.

Mike Abbot has joined London Records, Inc. as National R&BDirector to report directly to Don Wardell. Abbott's reference includeSupervisor of R&B promotional activities of MGM and Capitol Records.A casualty of the Famous sale to ABC, Jack Hakim, landed a NationalPromotion Director gig at Playboy Records last week -- no easy feat inthis tight market! Michael Thevis, G RC's President, has appointed Ms.Joan Grant to the position of Assistant West Coast Marketing Manager. The highly experienced Ms. Grant was affiliated with AllWestDistributors in Los Angeles, California Record Distributors, RecordMerchandising and Motown Records all in Promotions, Artist Relationsand Marketing.

Singing families along the bubble gum lines seem to be all the ragelately with Motown Record's signing the Aliens, a family of fiveteenagers whose first single, "High Tide," was written and produced byThe Osmonds. Also jumping on teen craze is GRC Records who haveacquired seven -member family act called "The Rhodes Kids" whorange in age from 7 to 21 from Houston Texas.

ALICE COOPER'S 26 year old drummer, Neal Smith, hosted anextravaganza first wedding anniversary party aboard the luxury yacht,Columbia, with his wife Babette to the tune of $20,000. The bar bill alonewas $2,500 with cases of Dom Perignon, and eight course dinnersincluding fresh Iranian Beluga caviar -- Food and service amounted to$35,600. Neal's present to his bride was a new Jaguar XKE followed bythe news that his sister Cindy Smith had secretly married AliceCooper's bass player, Dennis Dunaway, that day.

A special First Year Anniver-sary issue is now being readiedfor publication on October 4.

Watch for it!

There is no limit to the power of television, especially when youmerchandise around it: following the very successful Chicago TVspecial, Columbia put on a massive push for the group's entire catalog.Result? PAGE 14 RADIO & RECORDS FRI DAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1974

RECORDSR&R: What were you doing

when you first got into the musicbusiness?

CREWE: At that time I was inNew York. I had come in to go toschool at Parson's School ofDesign in conjunction with adegree I had in architecture and Iwanted to learn about furniture, the periods etc. That school wasprobably the best. The first yearthere they teach you color andtheory which I really didn't need.I hacrthe highest marks in theclass, but I had absolutely thelowest attitude when it came toreally doing anything. The manwho was my instructor asked me"what is it? You have the bestmarks and yet you seem to be sobored. Why don't you go do whatyou want to do, whatever the hellit is. You can always come backto this."

R&R: How old were you then?CREWE: Seventeen, and that

was around the same time that I

was walking down the street oneday cm Lexington Avenue and aguy named John Harkrider whohad a little agency stopped me onthe street (this was veryHollywood) and said "would youlike to be a model?" I thought theguy was trying to pick me up. Buthe said "you can make $15.00 anhour." He was a funny guy. Hehad no real office - he just had ananswering service and cubiclesomewhere with a girl who usedto take messages. Anyway hewould take all these guys that hefound on the streets and takeeight, nine or ten of them aroundto the various advertisingagencies and it was like - line-upfolks. This guy's great forcigarettes and this guy's great forsweaters and this guy's great forshampoo - so it was really a mish-mash but that's what got me intomodeling. I did land two or threejobs very quickly and then when Iwas on the job one day, one of thephotographers said "hey youshould be with a decent agencybecause we need you and want tocall you and never know how toget you with Harkrider." So I

joined the Hartford Agency and I

started making really goodmoney.

R&R: Were you writing, songsthen?

CREWE: Yes. I was writingwith Frank Slay; we had met at aparty. I think Frank and I gottogether at one point and decidedthat, with all this society and funpeople that used to hear us play atthese parties - why don't we makean album? There was a girlsinger who was very popular inthe bistros who never broke outbig but always very Into society.Somebody financed a record andwent ahead and made it and thensold it to a little company like asmall jazz firm - she was a jazzsinger. Anyway, some friends ofhers and some of the societypeople had back her made thisalbum and I think they sold it toBlue Note. Someone at one ofthose parties came up to me andsaid "why don't you and Frank goahead and make an album; we'llput up the money." So we madeup a deal. Remember thosethings, where we had investors ina music corporation? We gotabout ten people to invest a coupleof hunded dollars apiece and wewent In and made a record withme singing. It was unheard of

Going Back With...

BOB CREWEbecause you didn't just go out tomake an album at that time.

It was Frank's idea. He said tome "you aren't a bistro singer, forget about making an album, you're not going to sell the kindsof things she's selling. Let's gomake a pop hit." So we did, ortried to anyway. We sold themaster to BBS Records (who wasBill Borelli down in Philadelphiawho had "Here In My Heart" withAl Martino.) But they wentbankrupt when the record cameout and here I am running aroundEurope with a little group ofpeople doing this kind of quasi -imitative USO kind of thing. But itwasn't really. It was all privatelyfinanced. "American Faces" iswhat we called it. But weentertained all over Europe andI'm corresponding back and forthwith Frank saying "I think wecan sell it to Decca - no Deccaturned it down; I think we can sellit to so and so - no so and so turnedit down." So we finally sell it toBBS and came back from Europe. The record comes out on a

Monday, the company went

bankrupt on Wednesday and herewe were with 2,000 copies of therecord and believe me they wereheavy because they were 78s andthey were like two inches thick. That's 1953. But even though thecompany went bankrupt, we hadout 2,000 records and we thought"we can force a miracle." So wetook the records, got in the carand went traveling all over thecountry. Up and down the EastCoast, Mid -America all that kindof thing. So here we are with allthese records on our backs butthat's how I met all the peoplethat I still today consider my goodfriends.

In those days you could walkinto a town and it didn't matterwhat or who you were if you hadmade a record. It was funny andJack Lacey would say "Hi, howare you. You're on the air." All ofa sudden, you're doing aninterview. In Boston, I got toknow all those people like BobClayton who was the man of theday up there (which was longbefore Norm Prescott evenbecame big at WORL I

remember). It was the funkiest, most nothing station in the world,WORL. He started knocking BobClayton who was big at WHDH.He started calling Clayton adummy and a this and a that.Clayton, instead of ignoring himretaliated and everybody in townstarted saying "who's he talkingabout?" And before you knew it,Norm became the "biggie" andhere they're playing my recordwhich was called "Pride."They're playing the hell out of it,but no one can buy it, but I wasbeing played like I was a numberone record in Boston down intoWorcester where I met DickSmith. Those people are stillaround today and they're still mygood friends. It's like old homeweek when I pick up the phoneand talk to Dick. I ran into himlast year in Worcester and it waslike seeing an old relative.

It was fun. It was crazy.lt wasinsane. There was no hope thatrecord could happen and wethought we really had it made. Wewent into Worcester to a station. Not a big station, and gave the PD

THE R&R INTERVIEWBy Bob Wilson

six copies of the record (nowmind you these are 78s andthey're heavy.) We met DickSmith and had lunch. After that,we went around to the recordstores because we know they'regetting it played on the radio. Sowe're pretending we're buyersand asking them "do you have arecord called "Pride" by BobCrewe? And I'll be damned, buthe pulls out a record called"Pride." Well Frank and I did adouble -take and shouted "it'sreally going to happen." Whathad happened is that the stationhad sent the record over. They hada little deal going and he had fouror five of our records and we

BACK IN THE SIXTIES: BobCrewe with the late BobbyDarin (center) andsongwriter -producer EllieGreenwich(rioht).

bought one because we thoughtthat that will really make it go.We found out later that theprogram director had a dealgoing with this little store. Thatwas my first introduction to"freebies."

R&R: Most people today knowyou as the producer of the FourSeasons. How did you getinvolved with that?

CREWE: Well, a lot of thingshad gone under the bridge. I hadgone through "Silhouettes." Itwas almost a year or two afterthat, after the Worcester,Massachusettes incident thatpicked up on a group of out ofBrooklyn called Hall Miller andThe Rays. We didn't have anymoney left and asked GeneGoodman,, who was BennyGoodman's brother of RegentMusic, to listen to a couple ofsongs that we had. We wanted togo in and make our record andthat was "Silhouettes." Gene justheard the first eight bars and hesaid "go ahead and do it." And wemade the record put it out on ourown label which was called XYZ .I think we were the first of whatyou call "independent producers"because in those days, it wasn'theard of.

R&R: What then?CREWE: We started on the

record and pressed up five or sixthousand copies. We thought"Daddy Cool" was going to be theinstant hit, but for some reasonthe guy down in Philadelphiaflipped over the record, lockedhimself in the studio on the nightwe gave it to him, and played itfrom 6 pm to midnight.

R&R: Those were the dayswhen you could do something likethat.

CREWE: He played it over andover. Nobody could get to him.The next day, Harry Finkler, thedistributor down in Philadelphia, was calling saying I need 100,000,I need this record. Baltimorecalls on the record. They'rebreaking the other side - "DaddyCool." We had orders for a

quarter of a million and we didn'tknow what to do. Who the hell isBob Crewe and Frank Slay andhow do you get preference overRCA or Perry Como or whoever. We couldn't get our recordspressed in time. We didn't have aphone, we didn't have an office,we didn't have anything. And

here we are sitting, and peopleare saying I need 50,000, I need100,000 and I need 25,000. The callsare coming in from everywhereand it was that one crazy thingthat Hylit did that really kickedthe whole thing off. We finallywent with Bernie Love, CameoRecords - the orange label - afterhaving considered just abouteveryone in the business. Berniewas the most enthusiastic and themost hungry. He hadn't had a hitsince Charlie Grace's "Butterfly"and he was looking to have a bighit. So after that, it was a wholeseries of things that we did withBernie and the wholePhiladelphia thing which turnedinto Swan Records.

R&R: What were some of themajor hits you had then?

CREWE: There was"Silhouettes" and "TallahasseeLassie" and "La Dee Dah." Wewere in the Top 10 with threeartists at one time.

R&R: You were writing andproducing?

CREWE: Yes.R&R: You weren't singing yet?CREWE: At this time, I wasn't

really so much interested insinging as I was in writing andproducing. And then somewherearound 1959, skipping about fouryears of real hot success withFreddie Cannon, Billie and Lillie,Danny & The Juntors....all thosethings, Morty Craft approachedme on the street one day and said"you sing. I've heard your demosand I love what you do. You singas well as Darin, let's go in and doa big band date. I've got thiscompany and they're backing melike crazy - Walnut Records." Hesaid "go in and do an album. You're a great singer." So wewent in with Ralph Burns, who'sa good friend of mine and one ofthe best arrangers In the world, and did a whole big band albumcalled "Kicks With Bob Crewe"

out of which "Whiffenpoof Song"was released as a single. It wentTop 40 and I don't know how muchit really made, but it was playedto death. Everyone loved therecord and it was very much inthe style of "Mac The Knife" andthat's how I got to be known as"bob, bob Bob Crewe."

At that point, I met JoyceSelznick (who recently produced"Claudine"). She thought I wasgoing to be the next Tab Hunter,or something. She had an ideathat I looked so much alive I couldbe Katherine Hepburn's son orsomething. She decided that shehad a project where I would beKatherine Hepburn's son, Ann -Margaret's brother and this -goingto be a great movie, and sent meout to Hollywood. This was 1960and I went for a screen test andgot a contract with ColumbiaPictures. I got chicken, though. I

was sitting around Cyrano's oneday and thought to myself "hey, what am I doing out here, I'dbetter get back to New Yorkbecause I don't know how longthis face is going to hold up and Ican't act at all, even though I

passed the test and they likedme." Frank now had gotten coldfeet and left me because hethought I was going to try andbecome a superstar. So he wentdown and joined Swan Recordsand took over the whole A&Rdepartment and I'm lookingaround that day looking at allthese actors and actresses saying"oh my agent, my agent, my this,my that, my ass....blaaah." I gotcrazy and thought, "back to TinPan Alley in New York where I

understand it." I mean I can relyon my talent, but who the fuckknows how long I can rely on mywaist being 29 or rather my faceis going to fall at 34.

So I went back to New York andjust about that time, Frank was

down in Philadelphia, and we stillhad a working relationship, but hewas working more closely withDanny & The Juniors. I ran into afriend of mine, Frankie Valli, whowas then calling himself FrankieLove, and was being recorded onEpic Records. Joe Sherman gotme together with Frankie. Joewas responsible for it, and I cutone single with him which wentnowhere. It was called "I GoApe." It was a terrible record. Wewrote it and it was terrible. I

hated it. About six or sevenmonths later, I was up seeingLarry Uttal, who was an oldfriend, and he had put out thepublishing on some of those songsthat I had been putting out withCannon during that whole Cameoperiod. About a year before, during the whole Frank Slay,Freddie Cannon thing, I had somequasi -hits that were Top 10 inDetroit and Cleveland. Larrypublished two or three of thosesongs that Frank and I wrote forSpotlight Records (whichemanated from Detroit) and oneday I was in Larry's office talkingabout a new song Frank and I haddone or something, and Frankiecame in with Bob Gaudio. He hadjust been turned down by Larryon some masters Bobby hadproduced on this group called"The Four Lovers" which wasreally Frankie Valli. Now mindyou, a year or six months hadgone by since "I Go Ape" and I

said, "well, come on over to myplace and I'll listen to them. Let'ssee what can happen." I signedthem up.

I signed up the masters orwhatever they were we triedthem on a small label and nothingmuch happened. For about twoyears, from '60 to '62, I used BobGaudio, myself and the FourLovers (which we all agreedshould be called the FourSeasons, because I was very

hyped -up on a restaurant calledThe Four Seasons) vocally andinstrumentally on just about allthe masters I was making.

R&R: Were any of them hits?

CREWE: There were somequasi -hits that made like Top 50,Top 40. We got a lot of airplay. Inthose days, you could get a feelfrom airplay. So you had locallittle breakout records - I knowJoey Reynolds had some of thoseup in Buffalo on WKBW.

R&R: Something I missedsomewhere. Where did you gofrom student to learning youcould write songs? How did thathappen?

CREWE: One day I askedFrank what he thought about atitle. I said here's some lines I

wrote of poetry and I think itshould go "da-de-da-de-da" and Ihummed him sort of a quasi -melody. It just kind of evolved. And I guess Frank was the mostformative person in that time ofmy life. Because, musically, hewas the one who said you are alyricist, you are a writer and heloved the lines I was writina.

R&R: What I'm trying to findout is how you went from onesupposed attempted profession todiscovering you could writesongs.

CR EWE : I've never stoppedpainting. I'm always designing.Music became sort of a luxury ina way. I was just having so muchfun. I'd meet Frank for two orthree hours a day and say here's apoem I've got, or a new line or I

heard somebody say this. I

started to develop a habit Ina wayof taking my lyrics or whateverand Frank was able to take andtranslate them into really finechord progressions as he was sointo music.

I was listening to the radio oneday and I heard one of those cornyserial things on the radio like theShadow or something, it was amystery. They found the crooksbecause they saw somebody'ssilhouette. They said "there it ison the shade!" And I turned toTom, my youngest brother, andsaid 'silhouettes on the shade" -that's an idea.Don't you think thatshould be a song. Do you knowwhat the word means? And hesaid "yes, it's like a shadow." Soby the time I got home thatevening, it was pretty late; I

called Frank and we startedwriting that weekend. We workedon it about a week. And that'swhere our really first importantsong came from. We had a coupleof little quasi -hits. One called"Tippoty Top" -don't ask mewhere I got that title - and "MooMoo Guy Pan" -1 got that one off amenu. But remember, at thattime "Ling Ling Tong" was a bighit on Capitol.

You're always trying to get onthe bandwagon and into the flurryof what's happening. But wecame up with our own thing with"Silhouettes" which was really abit of a departure from what washappening. I guess it was thebiggest record I was ever onvocally, because I was doing thehigh part on the "Silhouettes,Silhouettes, Silhouettes" refrain. That's where our writing thingreally came together. Frank is

the one who really brought me outof the closet as far as writing isconcerned. He kept encouragingme to do it. Here I was a model. I

wanted to be a movie star. I didn'tknow what I wanted. I can doanything with my hands. I canbuild. I can paint. I can sculpt. I

never felt I had to worry aboutmaking money.

Dan Peak, America; GeorgeGerrity, Western Artist Relations & Development Supervisor; and John Hartmann,America's manager.

NEW &ACTIVEBOBBY VINTON (ABC) Vinton's track record is

solid. Good calls at KMPC, KI IS, New at WTAE.JOHNNY NASH (Epic) Add WTRX plus other

good East action.DEREK & CYNDI (Thunder) Starting at WMAQ.Add KMBZ, WBAL .

ABBA (Atlantic) Sweet Dreams (ABC) Runningvery close, may split the "Honey."

A relatively slow week for brand new records, due in part to recent conventions plus the labor dayweekend. The following, however, may still needyour attention: Billy Joel "Travelin' Prayer," JohnMahoney "Ballad of Evel Knievel," Billy Swan "ICan Help," Dolly Parton, "Love is Like AButterfly," Derek & Cyndi "You Bring Out the Bestin Me," Sam Neely "You Can Have Her."

POP/MOR NOTESby MikeKasabo

MUSIC DIRECTORKIIS/LOS ANGELES

Interesting note from Chuck Southcott, ProgramDirector at KG I L ... several months ago HarryChapin was interviewed by morning mad -man DickWhittington, and during the course of the interviewHarry grabbed his guitar and sang several tunes"live" on the air. I say interesting because the songthat got overwhelming response was Harry'snewest single "Cat's In The Cradle." Initial reportsfrom several other markets indicate that Chapinmay have his biggest since "Taxi."

WIP-Philadelphia reports playing a Chicagoalbum cut "Wishing You Were Here" as a single.

As reported here several weeks ago, WarrierBros. has just issued a new James Taylor single. It's, of course, the title cut "Walking Man" from his

current album.Alene McKinney, KMPC, reports very good

action on the new Dick Feller "Credit Card Song."It's a humorous picture that most of us haveexperienced at one time or another.

Some sides that are really picking up now ...Bobby Vinton "My Melody Of Love," Derek &Cyndi "You Bring Out The Best In Me," Garfunkel"Second Avenue," Tim Moore "Second Avenue"...those who've been on Tim's version tend to stickwith it, or give split rotation with Garfunkel.

Brand new and picking up fast we find "BackHome Again," John Denver, "Lovels A Rock (ButRadio Rolled Me) " Reunion, "May I Keep You,"Rance Searle, "Honey Honey" Abba ... anotherbattle this time with Atlantic and ABC are going forall the marbles. ABC's cover by Sweet Dreams hasa slight edge. It's only fair to say that it's been outas a single five weeks longer than the Abba version. Also showing strength "I Can Help" Bill Swan,"Hey, Mr. Dreamer" Steve Eaton.

KAK E -Wichita running a contest called the"Fame Game." Over $6,000 in prizes for the winnerand over 99 preliminary winners.

An interesting service is being offered by DarMilham of WGSO-New Orleans. He is now theresident "Critic At Large," reviewing, according to

Dan, "...just about anything intended to entertainpeople, including records." If you'd like yourproduct reviewed on -the -air, send It to: Dan

Milham, WGSO, Box 2000, New Orleans, La. 70116.
