Maine Section April 2019 Newsletter

Last month we hosted our annual technical seminar in Auburn. I would like to thank all the presenters that spoke at the seminar and made this year’s seminar a success. I would also like to thank Ray Bolduc, our technical seminar committee chair, for all his hard work planning this year’s event. We also had two representatives from the Maine Section attend the 2019 Legislative Fly-In last month. Thanks to Mike St. Pierre and Heather Hayes for making the trip to Washington D.C. and discussing the importance of infrastructure funding. This included encouraging our elected officials to support fixing the Highway Trust Fund, funding appropriations and implementing a long term infrastructure plan. This month we will be heading to Orono to support the University of Maine Students as they compete at the New England ASCE Regional Student Conference from April 12-14. This year’s event which is being hosted by the University of Maine includes the Concrete Canoe Competition, the Steel Bridge Competition, and the Sustainable Dog House Competition. More information and the full events schedule is listed on page 6. The students are still trying to raise some additional funds to cover the expense of the competition. If you can please support them by clicking the link below: https://www.gofundme.com/umaine-asce-student-conference?fbclid=IwAR0Wsw151Mc1wfhxjqYlr-THAKu2s3XXGNLs7Fzip0v0fUYTN4oWsdUPg9M We will be heading back to Orono on April 29th to see what projects the seniors have been working on for their capstones. This year we have 12 different projects that the students will be presenting on during the poster session of the meeting. The students do an amazing job on these projects and this is a great opportunity for employers to meet some fantastic young engineers. There is still time to nominate one of your fellow engineers for one of our annual awards. For more details see this issue of The Informant.

Civil Engineer of the Year

Citizen Engineer of the Year

Young Engineer of the Year

I’m also still accepting applications for the Kitty Breskin Project Award. If you have worked on a project this year you think is worthy of some additional recognition, please submit your project to me. For more details please see this issue of The Informant. We are also looking to fill some open committee and board positions for our next term which starts in June. If you are interested, please contact Mike St. Pierre ([email protected]) or me ([email protected]).

P3: Practitioner Presentations & Pizza We would like to thank our speakers for coming to speak at our meetings this month!

● March 6: Aaron Gallant from the UMaine Civil Engineering Department spoke about his mission with the

Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Association on the Palu-Donggala earthquake in Indonesia.

● March 13: Craig Douglass from the Brunswick Topsham Water District spoke on the transition from school to

career, including the importance of networking.

We are seeking 2 additional practitioner speakers to finish out this semester. These presentations are a great way for our student members looking for summer internships and full time positions to relate course content to the broader profession, and network. Please contact Alden Burns ([email protected]) to inquire about getting on the schedule.

Engineering Expo This year the UMaine ASCE students made the trek down to Portland for the Engineering Expo on the first weekend of March. Many of our students attended the Banquet Friday night before volunteering at the Expo on Saturday. Nine of our members attended the Expo where we made concrete hands with kids of all ages! We would like to thank the generous support of the Maine Section, who lent us the supplies we needed to make the concrete hands. New England Regional ASCE Student Conference We are less than a month away from UMaine hosting the New England ASCE Regional Student Conference on April 12-14, 2019. The Conference will be attended by 450-500 students from the greater New England region (including parts of Canada), participating in different competitions. Since the last Informant, we have secured a race location for the concrete canoes in Old Town! We would like to thank all of the companies who have sponsored us so far. Since we need to order t-shirts with sponsors on the back, we are unable to accept any other sponsorships. However if you would like to help us reach our final goal of $15,000, we have a GoFundMe page set up. The link is: ASCE Conference GoFundMe Senior Gala This year’s Senior Gala is held Monday, April 29, 2019 from 4:30pm to 8pm. We are excited to see all the hard work the senior class has put in on their Capstone Projects this year! We have a lot of great Capstone Projects and the graduating seniors would like to show their hard work to the broader civil engineering profession. We’d like to invite you to come and attend the Senior Gala. We’re hoping to have at least 30 practitioners not involved in judging attend this year. You can RSVP to [email protected] or check out the flyer about the Senior Gala included in this month’s Informant. We at UMaine ASCE thank you so much for your support!

Our Section continues to win national awards because of all of our great members! To help say thank you, each year, the Maine Section ASCE recognizes an Engineer of the Year, a Young Engineer of the Year, and a Citizen Engineer. Many of our colleagues often go unrecognized for their contributions, and this is the opportunity to express gratitude for the good work and service to the community that they provide. Please consider submitting a nomination for one or more of the awards this year. Civil Engineer of the Year – presented annually to an individual who is a P.E. in Maine, has demonstrated noteworthy engineering skills, and commendable contribution of their time to the betterment of society. Young Civil Engineer of the Year – recognize the professional contributions of younger civil engineers. The recognition is made to an engineer who is an EIT or PE in Maine and is 35 years of age or less on May 1st of the year of the award and has attained professional achievement. Maine Section Citizen Engineer – This award is to recognize Civil Engineers who are known for volunteering their expertise to help in their community or at a national level. These individuals have contributed significant personal energy to enhance the recognition of civil engineering as a respected profession through their involvement.

NOMINATION FORMS ATTACHED TO THE EMAIL! Submit your nomination forms and supporting information to the chair of the awards committee chair, Philip Dunn at the following mailing address: University of Maine, School of Engineering Technology, 5711 Boardman Hall, Room 119, Orono, ME 04469-5711 or through email at [email protected]. Kitty Breskin Project Award – Maine ASCE has instituted the project award in honor of the late Kitty Breskin, P.E., a Maine Department of Transportation engineer and a past-president of Maine ASCE. The inaugural winner of the Kitty Breskin Project Award, presented at the May 14, 2015 annual meeting, was in fact the MaineDOT’s Kitty Breskin-Muscongus Bridge Project. The project was honored for its innovative use of technology and important contribution to infrastructure in Maine. In order for other projects to be considered for the award they will have to show the same innovation and contribution to the community as the inaugural award. The Maine Section Award committee will review nominations and notify the winner by May 1. The award presentation will be made and the project will be featured at the Maine Section annual meeting typically held the third week in May. Nominations are to be submitted via mail or email to the ASCE President and received by 5 p.m on April 12. This year’s projects will be submitted to Lucas Stiles, Maine Section ASCE President, 2018-2019. Kleinschmidt Associates, 141 Main St, Pittsfield, ME 04967 [email protected] The nomination material should provide information on the project and its features. Examples to include would be how the project provided safety improvements, environmental benefits, was cost effective, had a shortened schedule, charitable aspect, unique design for Maine, or was first of its kind in Maine. Every project nomination does not need to have all of these mentioned but should showcase if applicable as they will be weighed heavily. Nominations should be limited to 6 pages total not including pictures (3 pages double sided or 6 single sided pages). Pictures need to be provided on a cd or memory stick and become the property of Maine Section ASCE to display as part of the award process. The project must be substantially built by April 1 of the year being nominated for and the design team and/or the project must be based in Maine.

Nominations will be received until April 12, 2019.

I am reaching out to let you know about an exciting new mentorship program the Maine and NH ASCE YM Chapters are starting this year. The objective of this program is to connect graduating students with YMs in the area they are moving to after college. This will not only help ease the transition from student to young professional, but also develop friendships and help build the YM Chapters. We have already received a lot of interest from UMaine students! We are looking for YM mentors of all disciplines, ages, and experience levels. We simply ask that mentors help answer any questions your mentee may have about moving, transitioning to a new job, social life in the area, etc., and invite mentees to any events you are attending. The YM Board is planning a lot of fun events for the upcoming year, including an Escape Room, brewery/distillery tours, Arena Football/baseball/hockey games, apple picking, trail cleanup, bowling and more! Personally, I think being a mentor will be a fulfilling experience.

If you are interested in being a mentor, please take 2 minutes to complete this short survey (I promise it is very short): ASCE MENTOR SURVEY

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected] or (518) 618-5039. Looking forward to hearing from you all!
