Annually during the week of the MonacoGrand Prix, some of the world’s most famousdrivers challenged the Star Team MC led by

Prince Albert II for a charity football matchat Stade Louis II. Stefano Coletti, Sam Bird,Johnny Cecotto, Kevin Ceccon, StéphaneRichelmi, Tom Dillmann and NathanaëlBerthon were invited to join forces with

Fernando Alonso, Sergio Pérez, GiancarloFisichella, Felipe Massa and Jules Bianchi(to name a few)… In front of 4,000 lucky

spectators, the Nazionale Piloti lost 2-3,

Pérez scoring one of his team’s goals. Coletti played for the longest time andproudly tackled Novak Djokovic while Bird

played the shortest time ever: only thirtyseconds, but he did get the ball just twoseconds after stepping on the eld. Theevent was broadcast live on Sky Italia withtwo very funny and lively commentators

that we know quite well in GP2: LucaFilippi and Davide Valsecchi. Now, ifanyone has a record of that, we would bevery interested!

Meet Caterina, Claire, Deborah, Ines, Rosana,Ruth, Sabina, Sandrine, Stephanie, Victoria

and Alexa. They are in charge of logistics, communications, relationships with sponsorsand guests, administration, and more. “It’s so varied that’s why I enjoy it so much” said Arden’s

Deborah Lyall. “I do the logistics, look after the drivers, sponsors, guests. I take care of the team kits, the website, the press releases, the

photographs and some admin work back at the workshop like invoicing, all the insurance for the company. The list is kind of endless…”

Fathers are mainly to blame in their daughters’career choice: “My father was organising

motorsport events and participating in Rally. It’s in my genes”  revealed Racing Engineering’smanaging director Ines Koschutnig. EQ8

Caterham Racing’s marketing manager VictoriaLloyd’s father was a racing driver “and so is my boyfriend” , but it was not the case for everyone:“It was a bit of a surprise for me,”  said Trident’s

Sabina Rosa. “I was organising events when I met

the former team manager who was looking for a PA. Now it’s become a drug: whenever I go home,I just want to go back to the track!”  In the end,

it’s all about passionfor motorsport: “You have to love it to

work in it,” conrmedART’s Sandrine Foix.“And you denitely need to have a

strong personality. But once you’ve proven yourself and

gained the respect of others, it’s not that difcult to work in this environment.”

Sabina agreed: “The

boys take care of me, they protect me.”

It is a feeling shared by Addax’ Caterina Sarrion:“They treat me like a princess! I sometimes

have to be quite rm when I speak to them in order to be taken seriously, but they’re sweet.” Victoria added: “Working with men is a lot less complicated. It’s very straightforward.”

And to be fair, men always need women: “I’m denitely the mum!” laughed Deborah. “I forgot my belt! Can you bring me another one? I’m hungry. When are we going for lunch…? I’m the mother

hen, that’s what Gary Horner calls me!”  GP2’sRosana Sorci explained another advantage formen to have women around: “We’re easier to talk to and deal with for some situations. Let’s just say

that they send us because they know we will get our own way!” she laughed.

Victoria noted: “There needs to be more female mechanics and engineers around. Women should

be encouraged to get into this sport. It’s great, it’s nothing to be scared about.” Ines concluded: “I do not believe in the cliché of women having to work harder to be respected because at the end of

the day everyone has a job to do, no matter your gender. We had female engineers in the past. I hope there will be more in the future.”

ThIS IS A MAN’S wORLD!

STEFANO COLETTIThe Rapax ace is the rst

Monegasque driver to win athome since Louis Chiron in

1931. Coletti has the strength,

the consistency, the speed…and the bit of luck it takes to be

comfortably leading the Series by24 points over Felipe Nasr.

SAM BIRDThe Brit dominated his rivalsin the Principality of Monaco

and offered RUSSIAN TIME acrushing victory, the second one

this season. Bird is now thirdin the drivers’ standings and

looking mightily strong ahead ofhis home round in Silverstone.

kEvIN CECCONThe talented Italian scored his

rst GP2 podium on Friday in thefeature race – the best result forTrident Racing this season. Headded another two points to his

record with a seventh place inthe sprint race.

JOhNNY CECOTTOThe race weekend started like it

did last year: with a pole positionfor the Venezuelan, but a slowstart led to Cecotto crashing

at Ste Devote, taking FabioLeimer with him as cars piled upbehind. The Arden man was thensuspended from the sprint race.

Barwaaddax Team

Two points. That’s all so far thisseason for the Spanish squadwhich is very unusual for the

team that have been champions

twice in GP2. Will Silverstonebring more points to Rio

Haryanto and Jake Rosenzweig?

AThANAËLBERThON

Monaco is arguably the most famous motorracing event in the world, and in the GP2paddock one name is synonymous with thefabled Principality: Pastor Maldonado. TheVenezuelan is known as Mr Monaco for his

string of results at the famous circuit, butperhaps his greatest race was in his debutseason of 2007 when the planets alignedand, for one weekend, Maldonado was simplyuntouchable.

His weekend was set up in rst free practice, where he easily set the pace after a start to theseason which had been challenging, turning

heads up and down the pitlane in the process.Second free practice saw Maldonado set thefastest rst sector before nding trafc, havingto make do with P4 behind the ART cars andtitle leader Timo Glock, but the Venezuelanwas untouchable in qualifying, taking pole by

0.3 from Giorgio Pantano.

In 2007 GP2 was restricted to just one raceon the busy weekend timetable, leavingMaldonado just one shot at glory. And it wasall he needed: the Venezuelan tore away fromthe line when the lights went out, and easilygapped the rest of the eld before controlling

the pace of the race.

The safety car was probably a bigger rival than

the other cars on track: Javier Villa’s crashat the swimming pool saw an 8 second leaderased, with a similar gap wiped out by thesafety car for Jason Tahinci’s shunt at Tabac. Both times the Venezuelan simply shrugged

off his rivals when they were released again, and went about setting up yet another gap, seemingly effortlessly.

When the chequered ag dropped Maldonadowas more than 8 seconds clear of Pantanoand Glock, the fth winner in the fth race ofthe season, with the president of Venezuela just one of the many callers offering hiscongratulations when he returned to the

paddock to a heroes welcome in the Tridentpits.

The 2007 season did not prove to be a highpointin his career - he only stood on a podium oncemore over the season, in Silverstone - but fora few glorious hours in the Monaco sunshinePastor Maldonado lived up to the reputationhe brought to GP2, which would ultimately

be proven by his championship win andsubsequent promotion to F1.

Nico Rosberg had a perfect weekendaround the famous streets of Monaco:the German was untouchable every

time he got into his Mercedes andclaimed a strong pole (with teammate

Lewis Hamilton next to him on the frontrow) before leading the eld away when

the lights went out, controlling the raceall the way to a dominant win 30 yearsafter father Keke enjoyed victory in the

principality.

Hamilton missed pole by a tenth,

and struggled slightly in the race incomparison to his teammate’s more

smooth driving style, although heonly made one noticeable mistake

when he dropped slightly off the pace

behind the safety car before his stop, missing a podium for P4 in the process.

Sergio Pérez, meanwhile had a strongqualifying session to start in P7, and

aggressively overtook throughoutthe race until an accident with Kimi

Raikkonen brought his race to an end.

The Finn’s teammate Romain Grosjeanstruggled for most of the weekend, and

mechanical issues meant he was luckyto make qualifying: he did well to get

into Q2, but in the race he tripped overDaniel Ricciardo out of the tunnel to end

his event early.

The Sauber duo of Nico Hülkenbergand Esteban Gutiérrez struggled for

much of the weekend: the German dida great job to qualifying in P11 while

his teammate couldn’t get enough heat

into his tyres and was out in Q1, while

in the race Hülkenberg was ghting for

the nal point before being mugged by

Räikkönen on the last lap with his tyres

gone, while Gutiérrez fought back well

to nish a second, and two positions,

behind his teammate.

Pastor Maldonado was unable to add

to his glorious record in Monaco: he

was caught out in changing conditions

in qualifying, lost his rear wing on the

rst lap when hit by Giedo van der

Garde, and was put out of the race

when Max Chilton pushed him into the

barriers at Tabac, prompting a red ag.

The Dutchman switched to slicks early

and had a best ever F1 qualifying asa result, undid the good work with his

rst lap collision, but recovered before

eventually fading on old tyres to P15.

Teammate Charles Pic had a weekend

to forget: after struggling in qualifying he

managed to keep Gutiérrez and Felipe

Massa behind him before having to

abandon his burning car just outside the

pitlane after his gearbox seized. It was

still better than Jules Bianchi managed:

the Frenchman didn’t complete a lap in

qualifying and ended up in the wall at

Ste Devote in the race. Teammate Max

Chilton fell out in Q1, and in the race

hit Maldonado before getting by van der

Garde late in the race for backmarker

honours.

At Monaco, Pirelli once more broughtthe P Zero Yellow soft and P Zero Redsupersoft tyres to the fourth round ofthe GP2 Series™ – which is always ahighlight of the season. But it’s also the

slowest and tightest track of the year. Sohow is the decision made about whichcompounds to bring to which races?

Pirelli takes into account four key factors

that determine the amount of stress andconsequently wear that is placed on thetyres. This information is what Pirelli’sengineers use to make their assessmentabout which tyres are best suited to

which circuits. Then, in consultation withthe GP2 Series™ organisers, a nal

nomination is made and the teams areinformed in advance, so that they canprepare for the race and start thinking ofthe best strategies.

The four key factors that governtyre selection are as follows:

absivnss of th sphlt.

Monaco is the least abrasive track of theyear. If you add in the fact that Monacoalso has the lowest average speed of theyear (including the slowest corner of theseason, the Loews hairpin) it’s easy tosee how tyre wear is minimal.

Cicuit lyout. Each circuit obviously has its ownindividual layout, which puts differentlevels of energy into the tyres. This

depends on factors such as the severityof braking areas and whether thereare mainly fast or slow corners – all ofwhich determine how much longitudinaland lateral force is put through the

tyres. Monaco is particularly heavyon brakes. This transmits heat to thetyres, which adds to the stress placedon the tyre structure. Entering SainteDevote, the cars brake from full speed

in just 100 metres. The tyres also haveextremely heavy demands placed onthem in the swimming pool complex, where they hit the kerbs hard andexperience signicant lateral forces.

wth conitions.

The track and air temperature affectstyre-warm up, which is the phasewhen the compounds are getting up totemperature. This also affects the rate

at which the tyres cool down once theyhave reached their ideal working range.Monaco is a hard one to predict, as awide variety of weather conditions havebeen seen there in the past.

Pst pinc.Historical data backs up Pirelli’s decisionto stick with the soft and supersoftcompounds for the tight and narrowMonaco street circuit. In the past, the

outcome of the race has often beeninuenced by tyre strategy – and we sawthis again over the weekend, thanks tosome great performances from Sam Birdand Stefano Coletti.

GP3 graduates lockout  GP2 podium in MonaCOHistory was made in the tricky streetsof Monte Carlo with the GP2 SprintRace podium comprising entirelyof former GP3 drivers, the rst timesince the inception of the Series.Series leader Stefano Coletti claimed

an emotional victory at his home raceand extended his points lead, whilstAdrian Quaife-Hobbs scored hisrst GP2 podium after starting fromreverse pole.

Reigning GP3 Champion Mitch Evanshad a superb weekend, qualifying secondand taking the lead of the Feature Race. The Arden ace eventually crossed theline in third and repeated the successthe following day. Kevin Ceccon was all

smiles as he produced a fantastic resultto nish second on Saturday, claimingback-to-back podiums in Monaco afternishing third for Trident in GP3 2012.The Italian pocketed a further two points

in the Sprint. It was a weekend to forgetfor Vice-Champion Daniel Abt afterbeing a victim to the rst corner meleein the Feature, he was penalised in thesprint.

In F1, Valtteri Bottas out-qualied hisMonaco specialist teammate Pastor

Maldonado on his maiden visit to thestreet circuit to start 14th. The Finnnished just outside the points in 12th,with Esteban Gutiérrez 13th.

ROUND 1 RACES REPORTS CLICk hERE

Can you sum up the rst GP3 weekend

using the new GP3/13 car? Were youpleased overall with the performance ofthe car?We are super happy with the performance ofthe new car, no less than 4.9 seconds faster

compared to the GP3/10 machine. We’rehappy as well in terms of reliability; none ofthe 27 cars have stopped on reliability issuesduring the 3 days of the Barcelona event.

Where do you think the strongest new

points of the car are? For drivers, the car is more demanding

but very fun to drive. For spectators, thecars are faster, look more sexy and soundamazing. For engineers it’s very sensitive

and responsive to set up.

How does the new GP3 car change the

settings the drivers would have used inthe previous generation machine? To be fast last year, the drivers needed toavoid sliding the car. There is 42% extrapower with the new machine, but with the

same tyre dimensions and same level ofdownforce. Therefore the car IS slidinganyway.

wht you thoughts bout hving more powerful engine and its relationship

with more tyre degradation? It is all about our global view on race drivers

careers. We consider that GP3 is the levelwhere young drivers must discover whata powerful car is and to develop “tyre

sensitivity”. At the following step – GP2 –they will get a “degree” in pit stop and longrace strategies to be ready to step up to F1.

Aaro Vainio will always have fond memories

of Monaco after claiming the feature race win,

and his rst ever GP3 victory, around the tight

streets in 2012. After getting his eye in during

free practice the Finn hit the ground running in

the split qualifying session, setting the fastest

time in the 2nd group to claim pole from group

1’s Kevin Ceccon by almost a second.

When the lights went out in the feature race,

Vainio shot off the line to lead the eld throughSte Devote, while behind him Tamas Pal Kiss

blew past Ceccon for P2, only to see the rear

wing of the ART car disappear into the distance

as the Finn set a string of fast laps to build a

big lead.

Around lap 6 the Hungarian fought back, setting

his own series of fastest laps to cut a swathe

into Vainio’s lead, but the Finn was simply

driving conservatively to protect his tyres: once

the gap dropped to around two seconds he put

his foot down again, and the rest of the eldhad simply no answer for Vainio’s speed.

have changed colours a bitand wanted more blue formy homeland Finland and

to also match the car livery.

I have the #26 within thedesign which is nice too.

I like to keep a simple helmetdesign so have chosen whiteand blue for the colours, with

a little bit of orange to add

I have had the same colourssince my rst helmet in 2003,
