The promotion ceremony will be at the Wyndham Hotel at 1350 North First Street, in San Jose on the second floor in “Salon H”. The ceremony starts at 3 pm.

The FTO Program needs a few good men and women!

For over 35 years our Field Training Program has been the model for recruit training throughout the world. Almost 1800 recruits have come through the FTO Program since its inception in the 1970’s. The San Jose FTO Program is a vital, dynamic, ever-adapting entity with the objective to provide the City of San Jose with the most knowledgeable, competent police officers possible.

Over 200 law enforcement agencies from around the world (Including agencies in Romania and Turkey) have contacted SJPD FTO Program just in the last two years in order to get information on our highly acclaimed Field Training program. Our program has been duplicated hundreds of times over all through out the country.

With the well-deserved retirement of many police employees this month, the department will be tasked with filling these vacancies with qualified officers. The FTO Program will be instrumental in ensuring the positions are replaced. Due to the promotion of several FTOs to sergeant and other reasons, the FTO program will also be losing many qualified FTOs. The police department needs at least 20 qualified officers to join the 15 Sergeants and 70 training officers currently assigned to the program.

The Department needs qualified personnel to help train up the next generation of police officers. Oddly we have more potential FTO’s than ever. We have over 800 police officers that have the time and experience to be quality FTO’s, yet, in our previous testing, we only received 7 applicants.

We need to tap into the massive talent pool of this great agency in order to continually improve and perfect an international model for police training. Please consider doing your part in training up the next generation, an experience you will truly enjoy!

If not you, who? If not now, when? Please don’t sit on your hands. Please do your part in keeping San Jose the model agency for the training of new officers and preparing the next generation of San Jose Police Officers who will keep the City of San Jose safe for years to come.

Diaper Report

The Department extends its congratulations to Sgt. John Carr Jr. and his wife, Shannon, on the birth of their very first child Morgan Mary Carr. Morgan was born on January 3, 2009. She weighed in at 6 lbs. 15 oz. All are doing great! I’m almost positive that Grandma and Grandpa are doing great also!

The Bureau of Field Operations Shift Change will occur on Sunday, March 22, 2009

The following schedule has been established to give all units in the Department sufficient time to notify the BFO Administrative Unit of all inter-bureau and intra-bureau transfers that will occur at Shift Change:

SHIFT CHANGE SCHEDULE

February 4, 2009, Wednesday- Medical clearance letters due (Noon) to BFO Admin February 12, 2009, Thursday- Patrol Sergeants’ Call-InFebruary 13, 2009, Friday- Officers’ Pre-bids (Main Lobby Bi-lingual & PPC) are due 12 Noon.

February 25-26, 2009, Wed/Thurs- Officers’ Call-InMarch 22, 2009, Sunday-BFO Shift Change

The deadlines for inter-bureau and intra-bureau transfers will be strictly adhered to without exception. It is essential that the BFO Administrative Unit receives the names of transferring personnel by these dates in order to establish seniority lists for Sergeants’ and Officers’ Call-In. Each bureau will identify their transferring personnel in a single memorandum to the BFO Administrative Unit.

The actual transfer of officers and sergeants will take place at Shift Change on March 22, 2009. Individuals identified after the above deadlines will not be transferred.

Sergeants who are eligible and wish to request a transfer to another bureau outside BFO must submit a memorandum to that bureau’s Deputy Chief. Sergeants who wish to be considered or vacancies within BFO will direct all inquiries to the commander of the specific unit of interest.

CRAB FEED

There are many wounds that spouses inflict on each other. These wounds lie open and fester. The greatest cure I know for these hurts and harms is the simple act of seeking forgiveness. There is a story of a woman who on her wedding day made a list of 10 of her husband’s faults and determined that she would overlook each of them. On her 50th wedding anniversary she revealed what she had done. When asked to divulge the list of faults, she said, “I never wrote them down. But when ever my husband did something that made me mad, I would say to myself, “Lucky for him, that’s one of the 10 on my list.” Something to think about!

The first episode of Mission Street Now! for 2009 is online and available for your viewing pleasure.

The electronic citation device MSN! spoofed as the “Cite-O-Matic 2000” in an earlier episode has become very popular and Systems Development is creating a list of tips to help users of the E-Cite system. In Episode #20, E-Cite instructor Doug Rock and Bob Pasquale explain how to clear the memory of the fingerprint scanner when the device is full and refuses to scan more prints.

The Mission Street Now! crew also sat down with Deputy Chief Don Anders for a story about the SJPD Speaker Series that is starting in January. The Department has a great line-up of speakers for those interested in survival techniques and personal and professional development.

In our “60 Seconds with the Chief” segment, Chief Davis commends those working in the Recruiting Unit and Academy for their efforts in getting the most recent academy class up and running.

And finally, MSN! received an e-mail from Everson, Washington Police Department Chief Erik Ramstead. He wanted to thank the SJPD for Everson PD’s newest recruit and also provide us with an update on this former SJPD Officer. You’ll probably recognize him and might even chuckle a bit when you see his picture.

Of course, if you have ideas for stories or have questions or comments about the show, please contact us at [email protected]. You can watch all of the episodes online at www.missionstreetnow.com or on the Department Intranet. And for all of you with video iPods or similar devices, the shows are also available for download via podcasting. Just check out the web page for information. Happy viewing!
