THE COMING MUSLIM INVASION?“Our Bible does not speak of a Mus-lim invasion, neither does it indicatethat there will be such a danger, butit does speak of the invasion anddominance of Churchianity. Satan, the father of lies, the murderer fromthe beginning, has been very suc-cessful at deceiving the nations ofthe world into believing that if theycan defeat their imagined enemy—inthis case, international terrorism—then the world can live in peace andsecurity.” – Arno Froese

Editor’s Note

Paris’s Burning Cathedral Is anApt Metaphor

At the beginning of this year’s Holy Week,of all times, a fire broke out in NotreDame de Paris. The media reacted with

dismay. People cried. Many prayed in front of theburning building. French President EmmanuelMacron immediately announced that he wouldhave the Cathedral rebuilt. Announcements ofdonations to the project came from around theworld.

That’s remarkable. When terrorists in Africamurder people made in the image of God, world-wide horror is limited. But when a manmadestructure in the West burns, grief seems to knowno bounds.

It’s obvious: Notre Dame is more than just abuilding; it’s a symbol. And it stands for some-thing that is dwindling in our day, and is alsoburning in a sense: Christianity, which has longdominated the West with its values. In this re-spect, Paris’s burning cathedral is an aptmetaphor. It represents the Christianity of today:a beautiful facade, but without substance andwithout a message. And that’s why it’s vanishing.

The church was built between 1163 and 1345.Six generations constructed it over roughly 200years. Its restoration was expected to take fiveyears. Notre Dame is one of the earliest Gothic

church buildings in France; it’s also considered aParis landmark.

The two natural stone towers are 69 meters(about 226 ft) high. The inside of the nave is 130meters long, 48 meters wide, and 35 meters high(426 x 157 x 115 ft); it can accommodate up to10,000 people. The cathedral should symbolize thegreatness of God. Remarkably, however, Christian-ity was hardly mentioned as the media mournedthe burning of a Western cultural asset. NotreDame de Paris, the church’s complete name, is thecathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese ofParis. Its name means “Our Lady of Paris.” NotreDame is thus a church building dedicated to Mary, the so-called “mother of God.”

The building is an architectural masterpiece, second to none in beauty. Nevertheless, all its ex-ternal splendor is in vain unless God the Father isworshiped in spirit and in truth within it. The firsttemple in Jerusalem was covered in gold worthabout 11 billion dollars. And yet God Himself saidafter the inauguration of that very temple, “But ifye shall at all turn from following me, ye or yourchildren, and will not keep my commandmentsand my statutes which I have set before you, but goand serve other gods, and worship them: Then I will cut off Israel out of the land which I have

given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will Icast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword amongall people: And at this house, which is high, everyone that passeth itshall be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath theLORD done thus unto this land, and to this house? And they shall an-swer, Because they forsook the LORD their God, who brought forththeir fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon othergods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath theLORD brought upon them all this evil” (1 Kings 9:6-9).

These words make us think when we consider the burning of NotreDame and the state of Christianity today. About the second temple, Je-sus said, “See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shallnot be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be throwndown” (Matt 24:2).

Notre Dame may well be rebuilt, but in the end it’s just a relic of thepast without any real hope to impart. The Lord said to the church ofSardis in Revelation, “I know thy works, that thou hast a name thatthou livest, and art dead” (Rev 3:1). Whoever is dead is without hope, lost and blind from a spiritual perspective. Our faithful God forbidthat we prove to be just a beautiful facade without inner life.Maranatha—our Lord, come!

The pope did say that all religions have onecommon statement: “I believe in love” (https://www.kath.net/news/53624).

The seven churches are the congregations towhich the seven missives are addressed.Since the number seven is a number of per-

fection, it indicates the total church of all times. The seven Spirits are a picture of the fullness of

the Holy Spirit; of His sevenfold ministry (Isa 11:2),which is also represented in the seven-branchedcandlestick, the Menorah (Zech 4:2-6). “And thespirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit ofwisdom and understanding, the spirit of counseland might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear ofthe Lord” (Isa 11:2).

Some are of the view that these seven Spirits areseven angelic beings, since angels are also describedas spirits in Scripture (Heb 1:14). And, because theyare before the throne, they appear to have a subor-dinate position. This cannot be said of the HolySpirit, who is God. (At the same time, one couldalso say that the seven Spirits before the throne arein fact equated with God, since John wishes thechurches “grace” and “peace” equally from the Fa-ther, the Son, and the seven Spirits.) According toverse 20, if the seven stars represent the angels ofthe seven churches, and the seven candlesticksstand for seven churches, the seven Spirits mightpoint to seven special angels sent out into the wholeworld (Rev 5:6). Both interpretations—the fullnessof the Holy Spirit or seven angelic princes—seempossible.

In the very first chapter, Revelation makes theprimacy and uniqueness of the Lord Jesus clear: Heis the One who is, who was, and who is to come. Heis God from eternity. He was in this world. And Hewill come again (Rev 1:7). When He calls Himself“Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, thefirst and the last” (Rev 22:13), He makes HimselfGod, for this is a divine title: “I am the first, and Iam the last; and beside me there is no God” (Is

44:6b; cf. 41:4; 48:12). God revealed Himself inChrist Jesus (Rev 4:8; 11:17).

Jesus is the faithful witness who, as a human be-ing on this earth, served God the Father devotedly(Isa 55:4; John 4:34; Luke 22:42). As such, He is thefirstborn from the dead, who will never again die(Col 1:18). He is the prince of the kings of theearth, the future ruler on the earth.

Through Him we receive “grace,” a divine favorwithout our participation. By this grace we receive“peace” with God. He gives us His love in this way,for He gave Himself for us and shed His blood forour forgiveness.

And this Jesus, our Lord and Savior, is comingagain: “Behold, he cometh with clouds; and everyeye shall see him, and they also which pierced him:and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because ofhim. Even so, Amen” (Rev 1:7).

Even the Old Testament prophet Daniel writesthat the Lord will come with the clouds (Dan 7:13).Christ Himself also testifies that He will return withpower and glory in the clouds of heaven (Matt24:30; 26:64). A cloud took hold of Him as He rosefrom the Mount of Olives to heaven (Acts 1:9-11),and He will come down again the same way (Zech14:4).

All will see Him—also and especially Israel; to beprecise, “all kindreds of the earth” (Rev 1:7). Thisformulation derives from the prophecy in Zechariah12:10-12: “And I will pour upon the house ofDavid, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, thespirit of grace and of supplications: and they shalllook upon me whom they have pierced, and theyshall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his onlyson, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that isin bitterness for his firstborn. In that day shall therebe a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourningof Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. And

the land shall mourn, every family apart; the familyof the house of David apart, and their wives apart;the family of the house of Nathan apart, and theirwives apart…”

Therefore, Revelation points to Israel in particu-lar, to the people of the Jews “which pierced him.”God will pour upon them a spirit of grace and sup-plication, and they will lament over the Lord(Zech 12:10; Matt 24:30), whom they despised fortwo millennia.

John receives the visions of Revelation on the“Day of the Lord”: “I was in the Spirit on theLord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, asof a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, thefirst and the last: and, What thou seest, write in abook, and send it unto the seven churches whichare in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, andunto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and untoSardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea”(Rev 1:10-11).

Many see the “Day of the Lord” as a reference toSunday as the day of Jesus Christ’s resurrection. Itis more likely, however, that John is referring tothe day of the Lord’s judgment mentioned severaltimes in the Scriptures, which he experiences inthe Spirit as a prophet. He has seen this day (cf.Rev 4:2). Therefore, John is to write down afterverse 11 what he sees “in spirit.” The “Day of theLord” is repeatedly proclaimed as the day of judg-ment in the Old and New Testaments (Joel 1:15;2:31; Isa 13:6-9; Mal 4:5; 1 Thess 5:2; 2 Pet 3:10).In Revelation, this day finds its fulfillment.

In the New Testament, the day of resurrectionis always considered the “first day of the week”(Matt 28:1; Acts 20:7, et al.). If John meant theday of resurrection, he probably would have usedthis formulation as he did in the Gospel of John, and as the other biblical authors of that time did

(John 20:1, 19). It was only later in the history ofthe church that the term “the Lord’s Day” wasequated with Resurrection Day (Sunday). The bib-lical context is always the key to interpretation.

Literally, it should read, “I was in the Spirit onthe day belonging to the Lord,” or, “I was in theSpirit on the day of the Lord.” It is the day that be-longs to the Lord and which God has given to HisSon, “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which Godgave unto him” (Rev 1:1). Revelation is the Day ofthe Lord and belongs entirely to the Lord Jesus.

“For the Father judgeth no man, but hath com-mitted all judgment unto the Son…And hathgiven him authority to execute judgment also, be-cause he is the Son of man” (John 5:22, 27). Asthe “Son of man,” the Lord Jesus, of all people, isalso introduced in connection with the “Lord’sday” in Revelation 1:10. Christ Himself affirmsthat this future day belongs to Him: “For as thelightning, that lighteneth out of the one part un-der heaven, shineth unto the other part underheaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day”(Luke 17:24).

Thus, the “Day of the Lord” is the day that be-longs to Him, and John goes through this day “inthe Spirit” as a prophet. The phrase “in the Spirit”aligns with the prophet Ezekiel, who experiencedthe same thing: “Afterwards the spirit took me up,and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of Godinto Chaldea, to them of the captivity. So the vi-

sion that I had seen went up from me” (Ezek11:24). And, “The hand of the LORD was uponme, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD,and set me down in the midst of the valley whichwas full of bones” (Ezek 37:1).

“And I turned to see the voice that spake withme. And being turned, I saw seven golden candle-sticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticksone like unto the Son of man, clothed with a gar-ment down to the foot, and girt about the paps[chest] with a golden girdle [sash]” (Rev 1:12-13).

The term “Son of man” isn’t found a single timein the apostle Paul’s letters to the church, but cer-tainly in Daniel 7:13, and over and over again inthe Gospels (in which the Lord speaks to the peo-ple of Israel); also once in Acts 7:56, as the lastwords of dying Stephen to the Jewish people. He-brews 2:6 also mentions the “Son of man,” butthis is a quote from Psalm 8 and addressesmankind in general.

The title “Son of man” refers to the earthly ruleof the Lord. Revelation is addressed to the church, but has as its great theme the judgment of theworld and of Israel (Rev 1:7).

This Son of man is “clothed with a garmentdown to the foot, and girt about the paps with agolden girdle. His head and his hairs were whitelike wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as aflame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as ifthey burned in a furnace; and his voice as thesound of many waters. And he had in his righthand seven stars: and out of his mouth went asharp twoedged sword: and his countenance wasas the sun shineth in his strength” (Rev 1:13-16).

This description of the Lord Jesus reflects theappearance of the Lord in the Old Testament (e.g.Ps 93; Dan 7:9; 10:5-6; Ezek 1:1-2, etc.). Revela-

tion is the link and eventual fulfillment of all OldTestament prophetic statements. TheologianRobert Haldane once said, “The nation of Israelcannot be deprived of what He [God] committedto do for them.”

John sees symbols for what the Lord is, for Hismajesty, His offices, and His attributes. The longrobe expresses dignity. The golden belt aroundHis chest points to the heavenly, divine, and eter-nal high priesthood. His white head and whitehair are like the white light that was visible in theShekinah, the cloud of the glory of God in thetabernacle. But white also points to His incorrupt-ible righteousness—like the white throne of judg-ment (Rev 20:11). His eyes like a flame of fireindicate that His gaze penetrates and judgeseverything. Only what is “fireproof” can exist be-fore Him: gold, silver, and precious stones. “Everyman’s work shall be made manifest: for the dayshall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire;and the fire shall try every man’s work of whatsort it is” (1 Cor 3:13). “Neither is there any crea-ture that is not manifest in his sight: but all thingsare naked and opened unto the eyes of him withwhom we have to do” (Heb 4:13).

His feet, like shining brass, as if glowing in thefire, are reminiscent of the altar of burnt offering.God Himself is a consuming fire that consumeseverything ungodly. His voice, like the sound ofmany waters, means that His Word fulfills anddominates everything. When Christ speaks, everything else falls silent.

The seven stars in His right hand symbolize theseven churches that are written of in Revelation(Rev 1:20). What the Lord holds in His right handbelongs to Him; He alone looks after it. Jesus isthe right arm of the Lord, the arm of deliverance, and eternal salvation. “Who hath believed our re-

No person can stand before the living God. No one will be able to standupright in front of Him. No one will be able to justify himself. No one will beable to assert himself. Since the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, death itselfmust fear Him.

port? and to whom is the arm of the LORD re-vealed?” (Isa 53:1). No one can tear His posses-sion out of His hand (John 10:28-29).

The double-edged sword that emerges from themouth of the Lord symbolizes the sharpness of HisWord. It separates and cuts. “For the word of God isquick, and powerful, and sharper than anytwoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asun-der of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of theheart” (Heb 4:12). His Word will also judge the na-tions (Rev 19:15). And His face, which shines likethe sun in its power, makes us think of the transfig-uration of our Lord Jesus: “And he was transfiguredbefore them: and his face did shine as the sun, andhis raiment was white as the light” (Matt 17:2; cf. 2Pet 1:16-21).

This Old Testament imagery also shows us thatRevelation has to do with Israel’s salvation and thereturn of her Messiah Jesus in glory.

“And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying untome, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he thatliveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and ofdeath” (Rev 1:17-18).

Have you ever seen someone fall to the groundfrom a heart attack or an epileptic seizure? Some-thing like this happened to John, and Ezekiel andDaniel reacted in the same way to the heavenlyglory (Ezek 1:28—2:2; Dan 10:9). No person canstand before the living God. No one will be able tostand upright in front of Him. No one will be able tojustify himself. No one will be able to assert himself.Since the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, death itselfmust fear Him.

But now we see the Lord’s reaction to the onewho believes in Him and is His servant: “And helaid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fearnot” (Rev 1:17). Everyone redeemed by Jesus Christcan count themselves blessed. Such people need notbe afraid of God. They are set upright and com-forted.

He, who is the first and the last, and of a divinenature (Rev 1:8); who rose from the dead; whoHimself lives from eternity to eternity; who holdsin His hands the power of death; to whom theRevelation belongs; and who has power over allfuture events—He preserves and consoles thosewho belong to Him. They do not have to beafraid. Their life and death are in His hands. Theyare not left to fate. They belong to Him and are inHis world.

For believers in Jesus Christ, that means what-ever happens, whatever you have to go through,do not be afraid!

And so John receives the command, “Write thethings which thou hast seen, and the thingswhich are, and the things which shall be here-after; The mystery of the seven stars which thousawest in my right hand, and the seven goldencandlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of theseven churches: and the seven candlesticks whichthou sawest are the seven churches” (Rev 1:19-20).

Verse 19 forms the self-division of Revelation:“the things which thou hast seen” compriseschapter 1; “the things which are” chapters 2–3,and “the things which shall be hereafter” chap-ters 4–22. It shows us that we are called and ap-pointed to proclaim the whole counsel of God,His Gospel, and the biblical prophetic Word ofHis return until He comes. “He which testifieththese things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen.Even so, come, Lord Jesus” (Rev 22:20).

In fact, the collective impact of slowing popula-tion growth and aging is leading to a seriouscrisis. Already, its shape and form can easily be

foreseen. Why? As is often claimed, “demographyis destiny.” Therefore, we can conclude that someof the consequences we discuss here can be knownin advance … actually, quite far ahead.

Never before has such a voluntary change inpopulation dynamics taken place in peacetime …and on such a worldwide scale. A rapidly acceler-ating Post-Familialism has infiltrated the world. The prognosis? The worst of the demographiccrises is yet to come.

As this article series focuses on “ripeningtimes,” we will probe into the question of whetherthese demographic developments are a “significanttrend.” In the previous parts of this series, we pro-posed a set of diagnostics with which to determinewhether a development is of prophetic signifi-cance. We therefore ask, is the world’s demo-graphic bust a marker of the end times? Crucially,

does this massive development line up with Bibleprophecy?

We believe that the answer is a resounding“yes.” We will set out our case.

Monumental Trend UnderwayThis author had the occasion recently to give aspeech to a pension and employment benefits con-ference. My topic centered on the presently un-folding pension crisis—what I have called the“global income crisis” in various publications overthe last several decades. This is just one aspect ofthe overall global demographic problem.

The attendees were interested to learn why thedemographic challenges were yet to worsen … andwhat would be the likely future outcome. My an-swer, in short, was that the underlying factors con-tributing to this pension crisis were stillaccelerating. Most pension professionals were notaware of the social preferences and human valueschanges that were the factors driving this crisis. In

RIPENINGTRENDS #2POST-FAMILIALISM: RAGINGAGAINST THECREATOR – PART 1

Why are children no longer prized? Today’s generations now plan muchsmaller families … if any family at all. Yes, matters such as these are personaldecisions, and people are free to make them. However, while these representprivate choices, they nonetheless contribute to unprecedented worldwidetrends of declining fertility, births, and aging populations. After all, there areconsequences for everything.

The reader may be surprised to learn that population growth has alsobecome a potential problem in the United States. Statistics for 2017show that around 3.8 million babies were born. That may sound like alot; however, it represents a drop in the U.S. fertility rate to only 1.76births per women. contrast, pension profession-als tend to try to explainthings with math and eco-nomic models. No doubt, such approaches have theiruses. However, they are notattuned to the related rapidchanges in human values—namely, trends in social pref-erences and family dynamics.

As it is, it is not likely thatpension professionals wouldeven comment on such is-sues. Why? Because beingoutspoken with the truth in-fringes on people’s rights andfreedom of choice. To do sowould clash with the general trend toward “inclu-sivity”—everyone’s choices, values and lifestyleare equally acceptable no matter the facts or science … or consequences.

However, as already intimated, the unfoldingcrisis should come as no surprise. The current sit-uation could have been discerned quite some timeago. Instead, policymakers have been kicking theproverbial can down the road for decades.

To gain a sense of the scale of today’s Post-Fa-milial trends, consider the decline in the numberof new births in China, the most populous coun-try in the world. New births fell by two millionlast year (2018) to only 15.2 million. As such,China’s population growth has fallen to 0.38% perannum. That is very low. A nation requires a fertil-ity rate of 2.1 children per household in order forits population growth rate to stay stable.

The reader may be surprised to learn that popu-lation growth has also become a potential problemin the United States. Statistics for 2017 show that

around 3.8 million babies were born. That maysound like a lot; however, it represents a drop inthe U.S. fertility rate to only 1.76 births perwomen. This is the lowest rate ever recorded inthe U.S. … a pace that does not maintain the cur-rent population.

Similarly, this phenomenon of declining birthsis now being experienced nearly everywhere inthe world. Fertility is declining virtually every-where. It is simply unprecedented in the history ofmankind and is playing out over a very short pe-riod of time. Why?

Declining Population Growth ExplainedWhy the emergence of these rapid demographicshifts?

Some say it is because women are better edu-cated today. However, that would be nonsensical. Are we to believe that better education must leadto a shrinking planet of humans? Apparently, yes, according to some. However, a recent survey

Page 13: The International Prophetic Voice for the Endtimes midnightcall… · 2019. 5. 13. · Digital Age P. 21 “In the Military ... dedicated to proclaiming the entire Bible as the unfailing

shows that it is less-educated women that havehad the biggest drop in fertility in the US. And,believe it or not, birth rate declines among minor-ity groups are among the fastest recorded. Some-thing else then must be the root cause of thefertility downturn.

The reasons are lamentable. For example, surveys today show that parents

consider raising children too expensive. This is agrowing perspective around the globe … from de-veloped nations to emerging countries. As such, economic issues are becoming the deciding deter-minative of family size. Birth rates now go up anddown with short-term economic trends.

According to various studies, having childrensharply increases the likelihood of personal bank-ruptcy (most certainly so for single-parent fami-lies).

There are yet other reasons why populationgrowth is falling. Notably, the world today is smittenwith “self-love.” Many people simply choose to livefor themselves. They no longer commit to long-term relationships … and children. Remarkably, sin-gle-member households are expanding faster thanany other sub-group in the US.

Contrastingly, we point to the Word of the Bibleon this matter: “Do you not know that your bod-ies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are notyour own […]” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

Others refuse to have children, as they arguethat population curtailment is absolutely neces-sary to “save the planet.” Scientist now think thatthe earth has entered the Anthropocene era(meaning, a new age where human activity is nowthe major destructive force upon earth). This isspeculative, of course, but nevertheless is a pre-vailing view these days. Apparently, the evil beingperpetrated upon earth is due to the births of newhumans!

The Perverse Wisdom of the AgeThe United States’ birth rate has continued to fall,as millennials increasingly believe that everythingis bad; the world is going to end; and to bring kidsinto this nightmarish hellscape would be tanta-mount to child abuse.

This opinion, quoting Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezon an Instagram Live broadcast, is typical. Shesays: “The world is going to end in twelve years. Ifyou have kids, it will end in probably like six yearsor something because they’ll just breathe more.” Asimilar view is exemplified by a high-profile blog-ger, Martina Bridges, who says: “The most progres-sive thing we can do is abort as many of the nextgeneration as possible so they don’t have to bebrought into this apocalyptic nightmare.”

It is amazing that such people do not see theconflict between their humanist wants and thefoundation that the Lord, the Creator, has set.Such an “animalistic” view of humanity that ispromoted today, of course, would lead to humanextinction.

Surveys today show that parents consider raising children tooexpensive. This is a growing perspective around the globe … fromdeveloped nations to emerging countries. As such, economic issues arebecoming the deciding determinative of family size. Birth rates now goup and down with short-term economic trends.

And, biology and morphology (the physical de-sign of creatures and humans that God has made)are mocked. Feminists are angry at “evolution” forhaving given them child-bearing organs. Raisingchildren is something that is now looked downupon as a lower caste career. Families are consid-ered to be fluid arrangements.

Crises are the consequence of the choices in“human” values that mankind has made. There wefind the ultimate causes, and not in movements ofthe stars, mathematics or economics. The conse-quences of “human choices” cannot be escaped.“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. Aman reaps what he sows” (Galatians 6:7).

The dispositions and values implicit in theaforementioned trends play a causal role in theworld’s current demographic challenges. At leastin part, they give rise to it. While it is wonderfulthat longevity is increasing and that the quality oflife is generally improving for the aged, the plung-ing birth rates have severe consequences that can-not be avoided.

Rather than raising productive children, finan-cial markets are now expected to deliver secure re-tirement benefits. But with shrinking families andfertility, this is most certainly impossible.

Thoughts to PonderWe now live in an era of Post-Familialism … evenAnti-Familialism. God allows humanity (and eachof us individually) to make choices. We canchoose good or evil, and define morality as wewish. But God has the last say. As we already haveidentified, demography is destiny. That destiny isnear. Judgment and consequences will come.

Oswald Spengler, the German historian andphilosopher, once observed, “When the ordinarythought of a highly cultivated people begins to re-gard ‘having children’ as a question of pro’s and

con’s, the great turning point has come.” Thatpoint has most certainly arrived for most nations. The trend will not reverse, as the point of returnhas passed.

Patriarchal societies (which have provided soci-etal stability for millennia) are under attack. Fer-tility rates are difficult to change, as manygovernments have discovered. The social trendsthat produced this change—such as new contra-ceptives, feminism, materialism, narcissism (self-love), humanism … etc.—continue to growworse. Male contraceptives (a male pill) is anotherdevelopment that will further depress birth rates.

Looking ahead, few economists give proper at-tribution to the role of lengthening lifespans inthe boom of prosperity and material/financialwealth that has been generated in the past twocenturies. Now that past demographic trends arereversing, they are dumbfounded and frustrated.Policymakers strive to boost birth rates withmoney and incentives. However, birth rates arenot responsive, proving that low fertility is a“value choice,” not just an economic one alone.

What is the solution? To date, supposed an-swers offered by the collective wealth manage-ment establishment around the world aremisleading … even fraudulent. In so doing, theymay succeed in deferring the ultimate reckoningday. But what a day that will be when it comes! The longer consequences are deferred, the moreperversions increase and the more cataclysmic thefinal outcome.

God intervened in the days of Noah and Abram. He will do so again in the future, as the Bibleclearly outlines.

In the next part of this series, we will examinethe question of whether the momentous demo-graphic trends that we are discussing are prophet-ically significant. MC

We now live in an era of Post-Familialism … even Anti-Familialism.God allows humanity (and each of us individually) to make choices. We can choose good or evil, and define morality as we wish. But Godhas the last say.

The Lord of the Rings presents a bibli-cal foundation for understandinggood and evil. For instance, it em-

phasizes the reality of a repulsive and sinis-ter evil, by contrasting that wickednesswith characters that epitomize that which isgood. The foundation of the drama is theobvious contrast between good and evil, re-sulting in great conflict. The story is not the

type of meaningless drama that arises fromobscure or unidentifiable distinctions be-tween good and evil; rather, the narrative ismeaningful as the good perseveres to ulti-mately triumph and eradicate great wicked-ness (a contrast with pagan myths, wherecharacters merely introduce “balance”among good and evil). The themes of re-demption in The Lord of the Rings are famil-

iar and personal, thereby allowing readersto become engaged in the characters’ strug-gles.

The great battle between the forces ofgood and evil is won by the heroism ofFrodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee. Aragorn isa Christ figure, with his people anticipatinghis return to take his rightful place as king.Jesus, of course, is the believer’s true King, and the One whom His people await to re-turn. Tolkien demonstrated belief that thehistory of humanity is truly a conflict be-tween good and evil.

Tolkien’s heroic romance captivates read-ers because the quest of the characters is anemotional/spiritual one. The Lord of theRings presents a biblical understanding ofGod’s power and His ultimate victory oversin and wickedness. The book of Revelationis the God-inspired disclosure of good tri-umphing over evil, specifically with thecoming of Jesus Christ in authority, glory,

and power. Revelation is trulyan appropriate climax to theBible.

BLESSED FOR READINGThe book of Revelation beginswith several notable proposi-tions. What is evident is thatthe Apostle John sought tocommunicate a message thatdid not originate with himself:it was a revelation concerningJesus Christ (Rev 1:1). TheLord is not only the primarytheme of Revelation, but also

He is the One actually communicatingthe message. The message originateswith God, is revealed through the LordJesus, and is then given “by His angel toHis bond-servant John,” who then com-municated “the word of God” to all God’sservants; that is, each and every believer(vv. 1-3).

The message of Revelation isprophetic, because it involves “the thingswhich must soon take place” (v. 1). TheGreek word tachei, translated “soon,”does not mean immediately, because it isan adverb of manner (as opposed to be-ing an adverb of time). When the eventsof Revelation occur, they will be swiftand with haste. Verse two asserts the au-thority and inspiration of Revelation inthe most unmistakable terms, by usingthe language of a legal witness sum-moned to testify in a courtroom. John’sresponsibility was to give testimony “to

Revelation is truly an appropriateclimax to the Bible.

the word of God and to the testimony ofJesus Christ, even to all that he saw.”

A most unusual and unique statementis found in verse 3, which reads, “Blessedis he who reads and those who hear thewords of the prophecy, and heed thethings which are written in it; for thetime is near.” The blessing associatedwith reading the book of Revelation in-volves more than hearing the words; onemust also heed the words, which meanssubmitting to them so that a person’s lifeis different than it was previously. TheGreek word tereo, translated “heed,” canalso be translated “keep,” and is thesame verb used in John 14—15 in refer-ence to keeping the Lord’s command-ments (14:15; 15:10). The act of readingRevelation publicly is significant, be-cause it demonstrates acceptance of thebook among the church, and is thus con-firmation of its authority and inspira-tion.

The initial message to the churches is“grace to you and peace” (Rev 1:4). Thesource of these blessings is the Father, the Holy Spirit, and the Son. God the Fa-ther is described as “Him who is andwho was and who is to come” (v. 4), anappropriate parallel to “I AM WHO IAM” (Exod 3:14); that is, the eternallyexisting One. The Holy Spirit is also thesource of divine grace and peace. Verse 4uses a figure of speech called apleonasm, in which more words thannecessary are used to convey meaning.“The seven Spirits” depicts the perfec-tion of the third member of the Godhead(cf. Isa 11:1-2).

Jesus Christ equally provides graceand peace. He is described in a threefoldmanner: (1) He is “the faithful witness,”meaning He faithfully revealed all the

Father wanted Him to communicate (cf.John 1:18); (2) He is “the firstborn of thedead,” a reminder of His death and resur-rection (cf. Matt 16:21; 17:22-23; 20:18-19); and, (3) He is “the ruler of the kingsof the earth,” which is a reference to Hiskingdom and reign (cf. Rev 19:11—20:6). Believers are viewed corporatelyas “a kingdom, priests” (1:6; cf. 5:9-10;Exod 19:6), which anticipates unionwith Christ in His reign. The promise ofthe Lord’s coming anticipates that glori-ous reign (Rev 1:7).

The final word of the salutation is toconfirm the truthfulness of the message,as coming from the One who is “the Al-pha and the Omega” (v. 8). Revelation isconveyed by words, and since all Greekwords (the original language of the NewTestament) are within the bounds of thefirst and last letters of that alphabet, theemphasis is upon God’s message. Theeternal God, “who is and who was andwho is to come” is the source of the reve-lation.

BLESSED FOR HEEDINGJohn’s vision includes an introduction(Rev 1:9-11), the revelation itself (vv. 12-16), and instruction (vv. 17-20). Johnfrequently emphasized similarities withhis readers, as opposed to differences. Heidentified himself to his readers as “yourbrother and fellow partaker in the tribu-lation and kingdom and perseverancewhich are in Jesus” (v. 9). John wroteelsewhere, “Do not be surprised, brethren, if the world hates you” (1 John3:13).

In addition to the anticipation of themillennial kingdom, the early churchshared in “tribulation” (suffering) withpatient endurance. Perseverance in the

midst of suffering is motivated by the ex-pectation of coming deliverance (cf. 1Thess 1:3). The spiritual kinship betweenJohn and his readers is what transformsthose who share in suffering into citizensof the coming kingdom. The realm of themutual participation in tribulation that re-lates to the kingdom of God and requiresperseverance is “in Jesus.”

The revelation that came to John oc-curred when he was “in the Spirit on theLord’s day” (Rev 1:10), “a lordian day” (acertain kind of day in which John was un-der the control of God; cf. 2 Tim 3:16-17).The vision began with sound as opposed tosight, which means it was compelling andthus difficult to ignore. When he was un-der the Lord’s control, John heard “a loudvoice like the sound of a trumpet” (Rev1:10). The person speaking to John wasthe Lord Jesus (v. 17), and the trumpet-likequality of His voice stressed the impor-tance of His words.

The voice commanded John to “write ina book what you see, and send it to” sevencities (v. 11). The arrangement of the let-ters to the seven churches, simply followsthe order in which the churches lay on ahorseshoe-shaped route along the coastthat someone journeying from Patmos toAsia Minor would travel. Ephesus wassomewhat the farthest south along thecoast; thus, the church there was addressedfirst. The churches were selected becausethey represent the good and the bad amongbelievers everywhere and in every age.Judgment begins “with the household ofGod” (1 Pet 4:17); therefore, it is appropri-ate for Jesus to address the church first, prior to His response to a lost world (Rev6—19). There are wonderful insights intohuman behavior in these seven letters thatdemonstrate the Lord’s evaluation.

As he turned toward the voice he heard,John saw “seven golden lampstands”

(1:12), which is symbolism conveyingthat each church is a lightbearer in a darkworld (cf. Matt 5:14). As believers consti-tute local churches, each one should be alight shining in the midst of the darkness. What seized John’s attention was the Onemoving among the lampstands, the Onewho is called “a son of man” (Rev 1:13).

John witnessed Jesus Christ in His hu-man form, with clothing like that of apriest and judge (v. 13). His head, withhair “like white wool,” testifies to theLord’s wisdom. The fiery eyes refer to Hisholiness, and the fact that everything istransparent before Him (v. 14; cf. 1 Cor3:13). His feet “like burnished bronze” re-fer to the trials Jesus endured in Hisearthly life (Rev 1:15). His voice “like thesound of many waters” indicates author-ity. In the Lord’s right hand were “sevenstars” (v. 16), a reference to “the angels ofthe seven churches” (v. 20), which provesGod’s care and concern for His church. From the mouth of the Lord “came asharp two-edged sword,” since His Wordis the standard for all judgment (cf. Heb4:12).

In response to the revelation that he re-ceived, John fell on his face at the feet ofthe ascended, glorified, and living Christ(Rev 1:17). The visible manifestation ofGod demanded worship (cf. Exod 3:6),which then resulted in blessing. PlacingHis “right hand” upon John, the livingLord Jesus reminded John that He is theeternal, self-existent One (Rev 1:17-18).John would record the things he had seen,in addition to “the things which are” andthings to occur “after these things” (v.19). May all God’s people pray that Hewould cause us to shine amid the dark-ness, until His work for us is accom-plished. Then we will be able to standbefore Him without shame (cf. Rom10:11; 1 John 2:28). First, you shouldn’t be discouraged eventhough you belong to a little flock. “Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good plea-

sure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32). Truly, all who follow Jesus form a small flock. Antichrist-ian Churchianity is becoming bigger and more pow-erful. The universal church is on the rise, and woeto anyone who dares to resist. Nevertheless, don’t bediscouraged, because the Father takes pleasure inyou who follow Jesus. Anyone who counts on Jesus

through all resistance has no reason to be discour-aged.

Second, you shouldn’t be discouraged despite hav-ing little power. “And he said unto me, My grace issufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect inweakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory inmy infirmities, that the power of Christ may restupon me” (2 Cor 12:9). Why are you weak? The an-swer is made plain here: “…that the power of Christmay rest upon me.” God’s wonderful grace can only

Be Confident and UndauntedDiscouragement drives away faith. It is one of the enemy’s arrows against us. Beingdiscouraged means not looking far enough. Believers who let themselves becomediscouraged aren’t counting on the Lord, but on their own abilities or visible things. A sevenfold call.

Wim Malgo (1922-1992)

be effective where one’s own power is eliminated. Therefore, no matter how weak I am, I must never bediscouraged, because “when I am weak, then am Istrong” (verse 10).

Third, you who believe shouldn’t be discouraged, even though there are few warriors for the faith: “itmay be that the LORD will work for us: for there isno restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few”(1 Sam 14:6b). Only then, when left with few faithfulones, do we realize how easily we’re inclined to turnto visible, external power. But the history of salva-tion, as well as our experience of faith, teaches usthat the Lord does not like to be revealed by masses,by numerical superiority. In church history, as Chris-tians began to form a powerful state church, the Lordwithdrew—their spiritual power was broken. Onlywhen Gideon had let go of his thousands and re-mained with 300 faithful, did the Lord reveal Himselfpowerfully. Abraham, the father of all believers, dev-astated a numerically overpowering enemy with 318men, in his old age (Gen 14:14-16). Jonathan and hisweapon bearer were only two. Numerically, thePhilistines were comparatively insurmountable. Butit wasn’t difficult for the Lord to help, by many or byfew. So, don’t be discouraged!

Fourth, you shouldn’t be discouraged despite hav-ing many adversaries. “For a great door and effectualis opened unto me, and there are many adversaries”(1 Cor 16:9). It sounds contradictory. There aremany adversaries out there, but much fruit is workedthrough you, since you remain in the school of faithdespite the large number of adversaries. There isnothing left for you to do but to believe, to rely onthe Lord alone. And, lo and behold, not only are theadversaries powerless against the faithful assertion ofJesus’ victory, but much fruit is worked by that samefaith. So, thank God for your adversaries, and don’tbe discouraged.

Fifth, you shouldn’t be discouraged, though thetime is desperately evil: “Redeeming the time, be-cause the days are evil” (Eph 5:16). Satan is seekingto make use of what little time is left to him (cf. Rev

12:12). His empire is already faltering. Jesus is com-ing! The night is darkest before the dawn. If thepower of darkness is using its time feverishly, howmuch more should we be doing it! Inner discourage-ment will prevail in us as soon as we stop redeemingthe time. The best use of time is victorious prayer.Through such prayer, victorious activity is unfoldingagainst the powers of hell. Jesus’ victory is a certainfact, even in this evil time. That is why you shouldn’tbe discouraged.

Sixth, you shouldn’t be discouraged, even thoughtemptations increase: “Blessed is the man that en-dureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall re-ceive the crown of life, which the Lord hathpromised to them that love him” (James 1:12). Thecloser we come to the final goal, the more fervent thetrials will be. Especially since you, the very one whohas given your life to Jesus, should be demonstratingthat Jesus is victorious, by your reputation throughchallenges in the visible and invisible worlds. Forthese reasons, we are even exhorted to rejoice whenwe fall into many challenges (James 1:2), and shouldnot be dismayed when we’re met by the intensity oftemptation (1 Pet 4:12; cf. 1:6-7).

Seventh, you have no reason to be discouraged, even though the field of work is immeasurably vast.Jesus says in Mark 16:15, “Go ye into all the world.”What could a trivial person like me tell such a bigworld? My resources and abilities, time and strength, are limited, so I can’t do anything significant. This ishow discouraged unbelief sounds. But look at Jesus.Yes, the field for harvest is immeasurably vast. Theworkers are few. But Jesus is behind you. He is readyto fill your empty hands. It is His works through youthat are taking effect worldwide. He can do anythingyou are unable to do, far beyond our prayers and un-derstanding, so that you can cry out with Paul, “I cando all things through Christ which strengthenethme” (Phil 4:13). Therefore, you should not be dis-couraged due to the size of the field of work, for“They that sow in tears shall reap in joy” (Psalm126:5). (MR1118/973)

than a millisecond. Thus, the Internetof Things, Industry 4.0, or autonomouscars can be realized, and so-called arti-ficial intelligence can be supported. Many advertisements are currently pro-moting the upcoming 5G network, inorder to get the population on boardwith it.

But the negative effects are con-cealed. Concerns include spying in atechnocratically growing surveillancesociety, changes in ecology resultingfrom the increasing consumption of re-sources as a whole, but also the mentaland physical health of many people.

In Silicon Valley, there is already a“church” called “Way of the Future,”which worships artificial intelligence asa deity. Its central nervous system willbe the Internet, says its founder. All thesensors and smartphones in the worldwould form its sensory organs and thedata centers in its brain, so that it couldsee and hear everything and be om-nipresent at all times. But since thisgolden calf of the digital revolution is

ultimately imperfect and transient, itamounts to mere idol worship. It’s partof an internet that has many dark sides, with cyber-bullying, big-data-grabbing,programming producing all sorts of ad-dictions, cybercrime, hacker attacks, and the Dark Web.

As early as 2011, ZEIT journalistGötz Hamann emphasized that as far asnetworked society is concerned,“utopia and apocalypse are very closetogether.” In recent years, bestsellersannounced the smart dictatorship andthe end of democracy. Well-known pro-fessor of medicine Karl Hecht, fromBerlin’s prestigious Charité Hospital, iscurrently warning that “the dictator-ship of digitization is in the process ofputting an end to mankind on ourplanet.”

This year, several American scientistshave warned that wireless communicationbrings with it a higher risk of cancer thanwas previously widely accepted. Neverthe-less, the goal is to “provide” almost 100%of the population with the controversialradiation. The coming 5G mobile phoneservice is also expected to be as compre-hensive as possible. Thousands of satel-lites will likely be required to support 5Gfrom orbit in 2019. An international “5GAppeal,” undersigned by scientists fromall continents and presented to the UN,the WHO, and the EU, cautions againstthis and calls for 5G to be halted on Earthand in the sky, as this rollout threatens aplanetary emergency.

some cultural pessimists and so-calledenemies of progress? Would we be bet-ter off ignoring the “prophets of doom”and concentrating on the opportunitiesof digitization instead of the risks?

Catholic theologian Gregor Taxacherpoints out a paradox in his clever bookApokalypse ist jetzt! (“Apocalypse IsNow!”): Throughout almost all ofchurch history and theology, churchesthought and preached in apocalyptictones. Yet today, even though the signsof the times are actually “end times” forour planet from a purely historicalpoint of view, they show themselves tobe mostly silent in this regard!

Instead, many brilliant authors arecounted among the prophets of the dig-ital apocalypse in our day. Of all thenovels that warn against the digitalapocalypse, just three are listed here byway of example. In her 2011 novelNEXT: Erinnerungen an eine Zukunftohne uns (“NEXT: Memories of a FutureWithout Us), Miriam Meckel describesthe “memories of one last human,” whoasks too late, “Why did we allow ourworld to dissolve into the digital?” Peo-ple weren’t paying attention when thebreak into the gigantic, overarching dig-ital revolution occurred. If only theyhadn’t been sleeping then, but listenedto the warnings! In 2014, David Eggers’later-filmed novel The Circle was pub-lished in North America and Europe. Ina nutshell, his message is that the digi-tal elite want to impose a utopia on us,which drives everyone out of theirminds. The most recent digitization-critical novel comes from Frank Schätz-ing and is called Die Tyrannei desSchmetterlings (“The Tyranny of theButterfly”), published in 2018. This

solidly-researched thriller warns re-garding the themes of artificial intelli-gence, bio-hacking, and the effects ofan increasingly interconnected world.Despite the ethically “good” intentionsof the creators of the AI, the plot doesnot look good…

Bible prophecy doesn’t see historyapproaching an improving, progressiveculture, but its downfall. Should Godwait until humanity digs its own gravethrough progress? The effects of hu-man sin are increasing with today’stechnological possibilities!

However, the Apocalypse also in-cludes the New Testament’s positiveoutlook on a new heaven and a newearth. When digitization seeks to cre-ate a paradise on earth, it is as doomedto failure as all previous attempts ofthis kind. Christians shouldn’t beblinded by temptation, but should turnaway from its pseudo-religious and un-ethical dimensions. Because these willinevitably lead to a real progress trapand make us subject to God’s judg-ment.

“In the Military Sphere, aVeritable Progress TrapIs Brewing.”

Are the warnings about society’s progressive thinking necessary, or backward? A dis-cussion with theologian Dr. Werner Thiede about apocalyptic thinking, technologicalprogress, and Christian hope.

?A

Professor Thiede, how did you arrive at the topic ofthe apocalyptic aspects of digitization?I’ve been watching the progress of the digitalrevolution intensely for about a decade now.I’ve observed that beautiful assistive tools andconveniences are linked, by digital technolo-gies, with an overall system that slowly butsurely restricts civil and inward freedom moreand more. As a systematic theologian, I amalso an ethicist, so I can’t be indifferent to thisdevelopment. Reading many articles andbooks on the subject has shown me thatworldwide digitization, with all its immensepossibilities, is perceived as an almost “apoca-lyptic” threat to the planet by some non-Christian analysts. From there, the nextlogical step of transferring these perceptionsto the biblical expectation of end-time deteri-oration isn’t much of a stretch.

But weren’t people anticipating the end of theworld even before the digital age? Is technologynow supposed to be to blame for the end of theworld? There has almost always been expectation, tovarying degrees, in the history of the church. But never before have technological skillsbeen as sophisticated, far-reaching, and mo-mentous as they are now through digitization.Take surveillance culture, for example. In thenear future, smart cities will streamline director indirect surveillance through transmittersin electric and water meters, the Internet ofThings, and increasingly digitized road traffic.Unlike in earlier times (there were uprisingsagainst the census three or four decadesago!), all of this is largely accepted by thepopulation for the sake of the benefits thatcomputerization brings with it.

Another example would be the develop-ment of artificial intelligence: in the militarysphere, a veritable progress trap is brewing. What if the arms race toward digital weaponssystems leads to conflicts in which the out-break of nuclear war is decided in a fraction ofa second, not by the human heart, but by thecalculus of artificial intelligence? And what ifautonomous weapons, such as killer robots orkiller drones, are put to use?

What examples would you give of an apocalypticthreat from the development of technology? In light of Revelation 13, microchips that maypossibly be implanted in all human beingstake on an insistently apocalyptic interpreta-tion. If a cashless society becomes a realitysoon, shopping could be tied to this kind ofnetworking. But when considering examples, the potential for speculation is endless. End-times sentiments among Christians shouldn’tlead to divisions because one person can’tshare in another’s interpretation.

Does a Christian necessarily have to think with anend-times focus? Isn’t the general sentiment thatthe disappointed expectation of Christ’s imminentreturn in the first century, justifies or even de-mands a departure from an eschatological focus inmodern times?Theology isn’t actually in agreement on thisquestion. A strong current in Protestantismsets great store by the philosophy of the En-

lightenment: it replaces the hope of Christ’sreturn with ethically and religiously progres-sive cultural development. I’m referring hereto “cultural Protestantism,” which I under-stand to have existed ever since [Friedrich]Schleiermacher. His perspective isn’t compati-ble with doomsday overtones, but portrays, soto speak, a cultural optimism. Of course, thiscomes at the expense of faithfulness to theBible—and not only because of a “necessary”demythologization. As a theologian, one canargue quite reasonably for an apocalypticviewpoint.

In what way?You have to consider the whole picture. The(purely hypothetical) assumption of an everhigher cultural development is unable to an-swer the final, especially religious questionsof reason: what happens after death? Is therea final judgment? Did the Creator have a pur-pose for His creation? Digitization can neveranswer this. As it currently makes a titanicattempt to hold out the prospect of immortal-ity through machine, it’s also ignoring thefact that our planet, indeed our galaxy, istransient from a purely natural, scientificpoint of view.

To what extent would you call the Christian hopereasonable? If everything isn’t meaningless and thus irra-tional at its very core, but a deeply rational

Creator God is instead be-hind everything, then Hehas a purpose for the uni-verse and mankind as awhole. Precisely as the tri-

une God of the Christianfaith, He definitely relates to

us humans in Jesus Christ. As aresult, Christian thought certainly

doesn’t lend itself to reckoning with aquasi-infinite progression of history until theearth is one day burned up by the sun. In-stead, the living God will intervene at Hisappointed time in His creation and assert Hisuniversal dominion. In that sense, isn’t it aperfectly reasonable hypothesis that thispoint in time could coincide with the mo-ment in human history where the power ofsin has such a significant effect, also in thetechnical respect, that global destruction isdue?

Technologically, you’re not just considering AI, butmobile networks as well. Are you an enemy ofprogress?I’m an opponent of a naïve concept ofprogress, which has already lost its luster. Butunfortunately, it’s determining today’s politicsalmost worldwide. In this respect, I’m also amobile network critic: for the sake of this ad-vocated progress, controversial radiation(which may have adverse health effects) willbe omnipresent without regard for the risk ofcancer or the concerns of the minority suffer-ing from electromagnetic hypersensitivity. Asthings have developed in the past few yearsand are coming to a head with 5G, I have littlehope of a return to more humanity in politicsor industry. Churches could and should beurging caution here. For the most part, how-ever, I see them having made up their mindsto agree with digitization in conformancewith the Zeitgeist. (MR0119/983)

Corporate SurveillanceMonitors Workers’ EveryMove The emergence of sensor andother technologies that let busi-nesses track, listen to and evenwatch employees while on com-pany time is raising concern aboutcorporate levels of surveillance.Privacy advocates fear that, if thenew technology is not wieldedcarefully, workers could be at riskof losing any sense of privacywhile on the job.

Overall, corporate interest in surveil-lance seems to be on the rise. A 2018

survey by Gartner found that 22% of organi-zations worldwide in various industries areusing employee-movement data, 17% aremonitoring work-computer-usage data, and16% are using Microsoft Outlook- or calen-dar-usage data.

Walmart last year patented a system thatlets the retail giant listen in on workers andcustomers. The system can track employee“performance metrics” and ensure that em-ployees are performing their jobs efficientlyand correctly by listening for sounds such asrustling of bags or beeps of scanners at thecheckout line and can determine the numberof items placed in bags and number of bags.Sensors can also capture sounds from gueststalking while in line and determine whetheremployees are greeting guests.

Walmart spokesman Kory Lundberg saidthe company doesn’t have any immediateplans to implement the system. Logisticscompany UPS has been using sensors in theirdelivery trucks to track usage to make sure

drivers are wearing seat belts and mainte-nance is up to date.

Companies are also starting to analyze dig-ital data, such as emails and calendar info, inthe hopes of squeezing more productivity outof their workers. Microsoft’s Workplace Ana-lytics lets employers monitor data such astime spent on email, meeting time or timespent working after hours. Several enter-prises, including Freddie Mac and CBRE, havetested the system.

-www.cnbc.com, 15 April 2019

Commentary: The process of monitoringworkers, and for that matter all people, isunstoppable. And, we must add, it’s benefi-cial—in this case, for the employer and the

employee. Today’s technology is ca-pable of literally monitoring everymove a person makes. Often, we areunaware of the monitoring going onwhile in a store making a purchase, going to the bank, a governmentbuilding, schools, even churches.Politicians, particularly in Europe, have insisted for years on strictersurveillance controls. As it standsnow, they have the most stringentprivacy laws in the world.

Why surveillance? Simply said:saving money and making moremoney. The entire world—whethercommunist, socialist, capitalist, dic-tatorship, you name it—can only besuccessful to the degree of prevail-ing greed. This is self-evident whenreading, hearing, or seeing mer-chandisers’ advertisements. Theyall do the same: “We want to helpyou. We will fight for you. You areour only concern. Our primary goal

is to please you.” But, in reality, these areblatant lies. Every company has only onetarget, and that is growth and more profit.

For us who believe in Jesus, we need totake careful notice of 1 Timothy 6:10: “Forthe love of money is the root of all evil: whichwhile some coveted after, they have erred

from the faith, and pierced them-selves throughwith many sor-rows.”

Why Young German JewsMove to IsraelPeople who were born and raisedin Israel are not used to hearingthat their upbringing is somethingto be envious of. The country isengaged in a bloody conflict withthe Palestinians, military service iscompulsory and it has one of thehighest inequality rates in theWest. Israelis also work some ofthe longest hours among stateswithin the Organization for Eco-nomic Cooperation and Develop-ment.

These statistics do not make Israelan obvious immigration destination,

particularly when coming from Germany—another OECD member that tops Israel in anumber of key areas, including averagewages and PISA performance. But for someGerman Jews, the dry figures are irrelevant. They decided to move to Israel anyway—and they have no regrets.

“Can you really leave your house as aJew in Germany without being treated like amuseum exhibit? Not really,” says Alon Ko-gan, a 22-year-old who was born in Offen-bach and moved to Israel in 2015. “I alwaysfelt like I was a tourist attraction almost,” herecalls. “Here, I no longer feel like an out-sider.”

Maya Rosenfeld, 22, also moved to Israelthree years ago. “I was tired of explainingmyself all the time. Tired of explaining Ju-daism to the world,” she remembers. “Peo-ple would ask me why Jews circumcise theirchildren or demanded that I interpret Israel’spolicies. Why is it my job? Educate yourselfon your own.”

In another instance, a fellow pupil broughta newspaper to class and asked her whatshe was doing to the people of Gaza. “Forhim, I was somehow responsible for this be-cause I’m Jewish,” Rosenfeld says.

But having to explain who she was didn’tstop after high school: “You would thinkpeople in their 30s are more educated aboutJews than schoolchildren. But even duringmy apprenticeship weird questions just keptcoming.”

Rosenfeld claims to have several Jewishfriends back in Germany who hide theiridentity to avoid conflict. But for her, it wasnot an option. So, in 2016, she decided tomove. “I could no longer feel like a strangerin my own land,” she says.

Government figures showed a 10 percentrise in anti-Semitic crimes in Germany in2018—there were 1,646 offenses regis-tered nationwide last year, up from 1,504 in2017. There was also an increase in violentcrimes motivated by hatred against Jews:62 offenses in 2018, compared to 37 theyear before.

For 28-year-old Lina, though, it wasn’tanti-Semitism as much as a general feelingof foreignness that triggered her move to Is-rael five years ago. Arriving in Munich fromLatvia with her family when she was seven,Lina says she always felt somewhat like aguest, despite speaking fluent German andattending both school and university in thecountry.

“I always had a different background fromothers. That’s why my closest friends werealso always of immigrant background,” sheexplains.

After becoming involved with the localJewish community, Lina star ted seriouslyconsidering moving to Israel. “The Israelis Imet seemed to have much more normallives. Their stories sounded like something Iwanted to experience,” she recalls. “Istar ted thinking what my life would look likehad I grown up in Israel. In Germany, I al-ways looked for a sense of belonging.”

Going to the synagogue or celebratingJewish holidays is no longer consideredweird or exotic, Rosenfeld says. But whileshe is happy she moved, her new life in Is-

rael in not concern-free. “Now I face igno-rance from the other side,” she says. “Somepeople told me that they would never visit Ger-many because of the Holocaust, as if we areall Nazis.”

“Many times I’ve asked myself what was I doing, leaving my comfortable life in Ger-many behind—especially on my first day inthe military,” Kogan laughs. “But whenever I visited Israel it felt like home to me. So I fol-lowed my heart, and it was the right choice.”

-www.dw.com/en, 4 March 2019

Commentary: It seems significant that Jewsare singled out. What is the reason? Thereare many. The most obvious is that the bulkof Jews in Germany either escaped or per-ished in the Holocaust. Thus, for the grand-children of those who committed theatrocities, only few have knowledge of orare familiar with a Jewish person. On theother hand, Germany has admitted millionsof refugees with open arms, mostly Mus-lim. Strangely enough, there discriminationis not so obvious. This is due to the nationhaving much experience with Muslims intheir midst. Today, one can see Muslims atvirtually all levels of society.

Yet, we must emphasize the Jew is dif-ferent; he will remain different, because it isthe God of Israel, the Creator of heaven andearth, who has segregated this group of peo-ple from all the nations of the world. Mosesmakes this statement: “For thou art an holypeople unto the Lord thy God, and the Lordhath chosen thee to be a peculiar people

unto himself, above all thenations that areupon the earth”(Deuteronomy14:2).

Honda Car Plant ClosingCosts 3,500 JobsJapanese car maker Honda is set toannounce it’s closing its onlyBritish car plant in 2022 with theloss of 3,500 jobs, a lawmaker toldReuters, in the latest blow to theUK car industry as Brexit approaches.

Honda built over 160,000 vehicles atSwindon, where it makes the hatch-

back version of its popular Civic model, ac-counting for a little more than 10 percent ofBritain’s total output of 1.52 million cars.

But it has struggled in Europe in recentyears, and the industry faces a number ofchallenges including declining diesel vehicledemand and tougher regulations alongside theuncertainty over Britain’s departure from theEuropean Union.

Japan has repeatedly warned it could pullinvestments in Britain, which it had seen as agateway into Europe, if London does not se-cure a Brexit deal favorable for trade.

The recently agreed EU-Japan trade agree-ment means tariffs on cars from Japan to thecontinent will be eliminated, while Britain isstruggling to make progress on talks overpost-Brexit trade relations with Tokyo.

Honda’s announcement would come justafter bigger Japanese car maker Nissan can-celed plans to build its X-Trail sport utility ve-hicle in Britain.

In January, Britain’s biggest automakerJaguar Land Rover said it would cut 10 per-cent of its workforce, mainly at home, due tosluggish sales to China and a slump in Euro-pean diesel demand.

“The car industry in the UK over the lasttwo decades has been the jewel in the crownfor the manufacturing sector—and now it hasbeen brought low by the chaotic Brexit uncer-tainty,” said Des Quinn, national officer for theautomotive sector at Unite, Britain’s biggesttrade union.

Nissan, Honda and a third Japanese carmaker, Toyota Motor Corp, together account forroughly half of the cars built in Britain.

Commentary: There are multiple reasons andinexhaustible arguments for or againstBrexit. One thing becomes crystal clear: anynation wanting to prosper needs to be part ofan ever growing, globally connected com-munity. Prognosticators indicate that theUK’s departure will be painful for the EU,but more so for the UK.

Statistics for 2017 show UK exports at$441.2 billion, with imports of $615.9 bil-lion. Exports to the EU stand at about 45%,and imports from the EU at about 53%, ac-cording to www.parliament.uk. Naturally, these figures will not be the same afterBrexit, and will have to be negotiated onecountry at a time. How do we analyze this

For example, Myers said, an adversarymight fool your computer-assisted imageryanalysts into reporting that a bridge crossesan important river at a given point.

“So from a tactical perspective or missionplanning, you train your forces to go a certainroute, toward a bridge, but it’s not there. Thenthere’s a big surprise waiting for you,” hesaid.

First described in 2014, GANs represent abig evolution in the way neural networks learnto see and recognize objects and even detecttruth from fiction.

A lot of scholars have found GANs usefulfor spotting objects and sorting valid imagesfrom fake ones. In 2017, Chinese scholarsused GANs to identify roads, bridges, andother features in satellite photos.

The concern, as AI technologists toldQuartz last year, is that the same techniquethat can discern real bridges from fake onescan also help create fake bridges that AI can’ttell from the real thing.

Myers worries that as the world comes torely more and more on open-source images tounderstand the physical terrain, just a handfulof expertly manipulated data sets entered intothe open-source image supply line could cre-ate havoc. “Forget about the [Department ofDefense] and the [intelligence community].Imagine Google Maps being infiltrated withthat, purposefully? And imagine five yearsfrom now when the Tesla [self-driving] semisare out there routing stuff?” he said.

Commentary: Artificial intelligence pro-jects are virtually racing ahead of one an-other. Traditional defense and war nolonger seem possible. Artificial intelligenceappears to be the key to the future.

Where will it lead? From Scripture, weknow that the world will be more and moreunited. Prosperity, peace, and security willincrease. Revelation 18:11 specificallyidentifies the merchants: “And the mer-chants of the earth shall weep and mournover her; for no man buyeth their merchan-dise any more.” Then, the next two verseslist 28 classes of merchandise, without men-tioning weapons of war. This indicates thatmerchandise is king. But in the end, verse19 testifies: “And they cast dust on theirheads, and cried, weeping and wailing, say-ing, Alas, alas that great city, wherein weremade rich all thathad ships in thesea by reason ofher costliness!for in one hour isshe made deso-late.” 6987(See End-Times Super

BDS Tries to Derail Multi-Million Dollar Dealwith IsraelA proposed multi-million dollardeal between Israel’s Central Bot-tling Company (CBC) and SouthAfrica’s biggest dairy producerClover could be in serious troubledue to heavy pressure from theanti-Israel lobby.

Newly-formed consortium Milco, inwhich Israel’s Central Bottling Com-

pany (CBC) holds a majority, is offering to buy59.5% of the South African dairy producer.

The deal would buy out Clover for $354million and bring a much needed financialboost to South Africa’s struggling economyand Clover, which has run into financial diffi-culties.

The Boycott Divestment and Sanctionsmovement in South Africa (BDS SA) has ve-hemently opposed the possible deal, accusingCBC of being “complicit” in human rightsabuses and violating international law. It alsothreatened a “militant but peaceful campaign”if the deal goes through.

CBC is Israel’s leading manufacturer anddistributor of popular beverages includingCoca-Cola, Fuze Tea and other well-knowndrinks.

The anti-Israel organization also warnedthat “if the deal proceeds, we will actively initi-ate, support and or join the call for direct-ac-tion and a militant but peaceful campaign, including protests and disruptions, againstClover and a boycott of all its products.”

-www.jpost.com, 10 February 2019

Commentary: Boycotting Israel is nothingnew, and in the long run, has always turnedadvantageously for Israel.

At the very beginning, before and afterIsrael’s Declaration of Independence on 14May 1948, virtually all countries of theworld had some level of boycott imple-mented. Britain and the US, for example, had in place an active arms embargo for theMiddle East. Quite naturally, its target wasIsrael, because the surrounding Arab coun-tries could openly purchase weapons andtechnical know-how from the global mar-ket.

But, why boycott Israel? The accusationis that Israel is “complicit in human rightsabuses and violating international law.” YetIsrael is an open society, the only function-ing democracy in the Middle East, with thelowest human rights violations when com-pared to the neighboring countries. What

we are seeing hereagain is simply an-tisemitism. Butthat too in the longrun will turn outbe an advantagefor Israel. 6986(See The Case for Zion-

Commentary: Communist China seems to beunderestimated by the Western news media.Generally, it is believed that they are mastersin copying technology. We recall the 1960s,when Japanese cars were looked down uponas being inferior. That has changed drasti-cally, as they have now become superior.

South Korea, in this case, is developinginto a technological superpower. Communi-cations speed is virtually unimaginable. Thearticle claims that it is 20 times faster thanthe existing 4G networks. Who would havethought, just a century ago, that a wirelessphone could communicate with virtuallyanybody, anytime, anywhere on planetearth? News, weather forecasts, etc. are in-stantly available by just touching a few but-tons.

From Revelation 11, we know that Godwill send two witnesses, called the twoolive trees and the two candlesticks, to

Jerusalem. There they will be killed. Verse10 reports: “And they that dwell upon theearth shall rejoice over them, and makemerry, and shall send gifts one to another;because these two prophets tormented themthat dwelt on the earth.” The fulfillment ofsuch requires instant communicationthroughout the world. But, that’s not theend, for verse 11 reads: “And after threedays and an half the spirit of life from God

2.5 Million Tons of FoodWasted in 2018Israelis threw away some 2.5 million tons of food last year, worth a total of NIS 19.7 billion($5.5bn.) and constituting approximately 35% of all food production, according to an annual report published by LeketIsrael and accounting firm BDO.

In the case of household consumptionalone, 880,000 tons of food—valued at

NIS 7bn. ($2.2bn)—was wasted last year, withthe average Israeli family disposing of food worthNIS 3,200 ($890), equivalent to a month and ahalf of annual household food expenditure.

The majority of the wasted food was fruitand vegetables, with Israeli households wast-ing 23% of all food, compared to 28% in theUnited States and 19% in Europe.

The report further revealed that the extentof waste also has a significant impact on thealready high cost of living in Israel. Food lossat all stages of the value chain increases foodprices by 11% for consumers.

To close the food insecurity gap in Israel, saidGidi Kroch, CEO of Leket Israel, only one-fifth ofwasted food—worth approximately NIS 3bn.($835m.)—would need to be rescued. Doing sowould only cost NIS 830m. ($230m.), less thanone-third of the cost of the wasted food.

“Policy for food rescue and redistributing itto disadvantaged sectors of the population isan effective economic plan in Israel, where alarge part of household expenditure is onfood,” said BDO chief economist Chen Herzog.

Aiming to encourage food rescue, Leket pro-motes a range of policy measures it considersnecessary to implement to encourage foodrescue.

This includes the development of a nationalplan for food rescue, setting a national food res-cue goal, requiring the food rescue of all govern-mental and government-financed institutions, reevaluating expiry dates, and requiring food res-

cue as a condition for private businesses toparticipate in government tender processes.

In October 2018, Leket recorded a signifi-cant legislative victory when the Knessetpassed the Food Donation Act, protectingfood donors and food associations againstpotential criminal and civil claims based ondamage caused by donated foodstuffs.

Last year, Leket said its team of volunteers res-cued 2.2 million cooked meals from IDF armybases, hotel catering companies and restaurantslast year. In addition, it saved 15,500 tons of agri-cultural produce worth NIS 150m. ($41.5m.).

The rescued food was then distributed to175,000 individuals at risk through the non-profit’s network of 200 agency partnersacross the country.

-www.jpost.com, 5 March 2019

Commentary: There have been five majormass immigrations to Israel (Aliyah): thefirst one in 1882, with some 35,000 mainlyRussians, followed by the second Aliyah of40,000 mostly Russians in 1909. That wasthe year the first communist agricultural set-tlement (kibbutz) was established: Degania. These early years were extremely impor-tant; people can live without a government,a police force, schools, religious institu-tions, etc., but they cannot exist withoutfood. The backbone of modern Israel startedwith food production—in some cases, liter-ally turning the desert into a blossominggarden. Some 2,500 years ago, the prophetEzekiel wrote about this miracle: “And the

desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it laydesolate in the sight of all that passed by.And they shall say, This land that was deso-late is become like the garden of Eden; andthe waste and desolate and ruined cities arebecome fenced, and are inhabited” (Ezekiel36:34-35).

In the meantime, Israel has been extremelysuccessful in developing their agricultural in-dustry, and on many levels has become a worldleader when it comes to high-tech agriculture.

Today, food is available in abundance,so that over one-third can be wasted andthere is still much left over.

Waste, however, is another issue; that istrue in virtually all developed countries. Thereare hundreds if not thousands of organizationscollecting food for those who are less fortunateand, in some cases, actually suffer fromhunger. Here in the state of South Carolina, weare told that 10% of children go to bed hungry. While these statistics are difficult to confirm ordeny, we do know one thing: man’s inventive-ness, his ideas of how to plant, grow, and har-vest food, are amazing. Just a couple ofcenturies ago, over 90% of the population wasemployed in agriculture. Today, in mostcases, it is 2% or less of the workforce of acountry.

What is the meaning of it all? As repeat-edly emphasized, man is so successful withhis own inventions that he no longer relieson God’s blessing. He has taken most thingsinto his own hands, and proudly exclaims,“…I am rich, and increased with goods, andhave need of nothing” (Revelation 3:17a).

Not only in the agricultural sector, buton virtually all levelsof modern society, man is working to-ward total indepen-dence from God theCreator.

Temple Built in 2030?Dear Brother Froese,

I have been reading the Mid-night Call magazine for manyyears. I know that you are a ser-vant who loves the Lord andyour neighbors also. You sendme Christmas and birthdaycards, and I thank you for thatact of kindness. We know thatfor those of us who love theLord, all things work togetherfor good to those who are calledaccording to His purpose, asPaul wrote in Romans 8:28.Even though we have differentopinions on some things, we dolove the Lord and each other.

Please allow me to share withyou an experience I had in theyear 2000. As I was readingDaniel 9:2, I prayed to the Lordto let me understand whatDaniel had come to understandfrom books, why 70 years mustpass before the desolation ofJerusalem would end, accordingto the word of the Lord that wasgiven to Jeremiah the prophet. This resulted in a two-year study

of God’s Word. The Lord an-swered my prayer, and I under-stood from books what Danielhad understood from books. I started out with the King JamesVersion and ended with the Eng-lish Standard Version, whichgave me a better understanding, especially of Daniel 9. From thisI did a chronology that was soenlightening for me. Lookingforward, I determined in 2002that the next temple will be ded-icated in Jerusalem in 2030.

-R. Pugh, AL

Answer: Only time will give you the an-

swer. However, at this point it is all but

impossible to construct a temple on

Mount Moriah in Jerusalem. What we

do know is that Antichrist will sit in the

temple, declaring himself to be god;

see 2 Thessalonians 2:4. Interestingly,

Jesus declared, “But when ye shall see

the abomination of desolation, spoken

of by Daniel the prophet, standing

where it ought not, (let him that read-

eth understand,) then let them that be

in Judaea flee to the mountains” (Mark

13:14). Note “standing where it ought

not”; that could indicate a temple not

located on the Temple Mount. The

other interpretation is that Antichrist

sits in the spiritual temple, i.e. the

Church.

Why Can’t Sin Be Expelled?Dear Midnight Call,

How did (does) God deter-mine how He was going to facili-tate the salvation of mankind?

On what basis did the Fatherdetermine what conditions weresatisfied—torture, suffering, hu-miliation, indignation, scourg-ing, punishing, beating, andeventually death of His only be-gotten Son, Jesus—to establishthe salvation of mankind (thehuman race)? How did (does)the ordeal of agony and deathsatisfy criteria for washing sinaway and procure the method toobtain eternal life in heaven?

Original sin can be imputed(ascribed, attributed) from par-ents to children, so why can’t sinbe discharged, projected, ex-pelled, released, ousted, termi-nated, in a similar or parallelfashion?

-J. Skinner, CT

Answer: After man fell into sin, God

gives us a flicker of hope of salvation in

Genesis 3:15. That’s what the entire

Bible is all about.

Why was punishment, torture, suf-

fering, humiliation necessary? Answer:

fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Read Isa-

iah 53, and you will notice that He was

despised, rejected, acquainted with

grief and sorrows, stricken, smitten by

God and afflicted, wounded, bruised,

etc. Sin requires punishment.

God created man as a free agent to

decide for or against Him. It is not just

what we do or think that is sin; our

flesh and blood is sin. The Bible says,

“flesh and blood cannot inherit the

kingdom of God.” Children are not re-

sponsible for the sins of their parents;

Scripture reads, “the soul that sinneth, it

shall die.” But, if a child is born in a fam-

ily where certain sins are rampant, then

it stands to reason that the child will

follow that path.

Sin cannot be expelled or eradi-

cated without the price being paid;

otherwise, God would contradict Him-

self. His Word is final, “…every man shall

die for his own sin” (2 Chronicles 25:4).

But the price was paid in full, as we can

read in the often-quoted verse John

3:16.

DreamsDear Editor Froese,

Greetings in the name of theLord Jesus! I was very pleasantlysurprised to get a birthday cardfrom you, and wish to say thankyou. We live in a very “fast-paced world”; even relatives for-get or don’t send out cardsmonthly, only at Christmas.

I have a concern I would likeyour thoughts and opinionsabout. It concerns dreams. From

reading Scripture, I know dreamshave been around for a long time.“Young men have visions; oldmen have dreams.” I’ve consid-ered myself “young” for manyyears, but the Bible tells me I amold…perish the thought!

I have many dreams, some-times more than one in a night. Some dreams so wonderful theEnglish language would be inad-equate to describe them. Otherdreams…I cannot imagine evergetting into the subjects theybring to my mind.

Pray that the Lord will moni-tor what I think even before I eventually go to sleep. Some-times these prayers seem to beanswered. Sometimes, I dreamdespite the prayers; what to do?This is a concern!

-B. More, NY

Answer: Regarding dreams, I recall the

late Dr. Wim Malgo stated: “The older

we grow, it seems we have more vivid

dreams. That is normal and should not

be a cause for alarm.”

The epistle of the Hebrews begins

with these words: “God, who at sundry

times and in divers manners spake in

time past unto the fathers by the

prophets.” Divers manners means vari-

ous ways, such as dreams, appearances,

visions, and the direct voice of God.

That was in times past. Note verse 2:

“Hath in these last days spoken unto us

by his Son, whom he hath appointed

heir of all things, by whom also he

made the worlds.” He has spoken to us

through His Son, and that is the written

Word of God from Genesis to Revela-

tion. MC

It was more than 3,000 years ago whenDavid became king over Israel and con-quered Jerusalem. At that time, the Je-

busites dwelled in the city and the land. They were so sure that David could not con-quer this city that they mocked, “Exceptthou take away the blind and the lame, thoushalt not come in hither: thinking, Davidcannot come in hither” (2 Samuel 5:6b).Luther’s translation makes it a little clearer:“…You will not come into this place becauseeven our blind and lame will defeat you.”There are no details given except the aboveintroductory Scripture. David conquered thestronghold of Zion, and it was named theCity of David.

From that point on, Jews have a recordedhistory of their presence. We know that thecity of Jerusalem was destroyed and the tem-ple burned in 70 AD by the Roman legions.Volumes of records testify of the Jewish re-volt against the Roman Empire under theleadership of Simon bar Kokhba. As a worldpower, Rome could not afford to allow suchrebellion and reestablished Roman authorityin the land of Israel. Had they not rebelledagainst Rome, the temple would not havebeen destroyed, and Jews could have contin-ued the temple service in Jerusalem. That, however, was not the case, becauseprophecy had to be fulfilled.

“And Jesus answering said unto him,Seest thou these great buildings? there shallnot be left one stone upon another, that

shall not be thrown down” (Mark 13:2). It isof interest that very little of the second tem-ple is being identified or found today, whileRoman buildings can be seen all over Eu-rope, northern Africa, and parts of Asia. TheColosseum in Rome is a major tourist at-traction; it still stands, but there is nothingleft of the temple in Jerusalem. How precisethis prophecy was fulfilled!

About the city of Jerusalem, Wikipediawrites: “The city of Jerusalem is sacred to anumber of religious traditions including theAbrahamic religions of Judaism, Christian-ity, and Islam, which consider it a holy site. Some of the more sacred places for each ofthe religions are found in Jerusalem, and theone shared between all three is the TempleMount.” Biblically speaking, this is not pre-cise, because for Christians, Israel,Jerusalem, and the Temple Mount are not“sacred places.”

When Jesus met the Samaritan women atthe well, she attempted to argue about thephysical location of worship. Jesus told her,“Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, noryet at Jerusalem, worship the Father” (John4:21). He adds, “…true worshippers shallworship the Father in spirit and in truth…”(verse 23).

The Church worships God in spirit intheir homes, at work, driving a vehicle, go-ing shopping, or in a building which we tra-ditionally call a “church.”

“Nevertheless David took the strong hold ofZion: the same is the city of David” (2 Samuel5:7).

Recently, an article appeared head-lined, “Rare ancient treasures bearing Bib-lical names discovered in Jerusalem’s Cityof David”:

Archaeologists in Israel have discovered a rare

clay seal mark and a 2,600-year-old stone

stamp bearing Biblical names amid the ruins

of a building destroyed by the ancient Babylo-

nians.

The amazing finds, which date to the First

Temple period, were made in Jerusalem’s fa-

mous City of David. The artifacts were discov-

ered in the remains of a structure razed in the

6th century B.C., likely during the Babylonian

destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C., according

to experts.

In a statement, Prof. Yuval Gadot of Tel Aviv

University and the Israel Antiquities Authority,

which oversaw the dig, said charred pottery

shards were found in the building, indicating

that the seal mark and stamp survived a major

fire. Both artifacts feature ancient Hebrew

script.

The tiny 1 cm seal stamp has been dated to

sometime from the middle of the seventh

century to the start of the sixth century B.C.

Deciphered by Dr. Anat Mendel-Geberovich of

the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the

Center for the Study of Ancient Jerusalem, the

stamp features the words: “(Belonging) to

Nathan-Melech, Servant of the King.” In the

second book of Kings 23:11 “Nathan-Melech”

is described as an official in the court of King

Josiah. The seal is described as the first archae-

ological evidence of the Biblical name.

-www.foxnews.com, 1 April 2019

Although this concerns the Solomon tem-ple, it seems to apply to the second templetoo. Jewish identity was virtually erased. Inthis case, only a tiny 1 cm (less than ½inch) seal confirms the Jewish presence atthe site of the first temple.

What is the future? Zephaniah pro-claims: “The Lord will be terrible untothem: for he will famish all the gods of theearth; and men shall worship him, everyone from his place, even all the isles of theheathen” (Zephaniah 2:11). This proclaimsthe end of the idols of the world, and con-firms what Romans 14:11 says: “For it iswritten, As I live, saith the Lord, everyknee shall bow to me, and every tongueshall confess to God.”

briefly look back on 2018.It was a very special yearfor Midnight Call Brazil:we celebrated our 50th an-niversary! The theme of

October’s conference, “20-50-70: The Loyalty of God” included

this anniversary and two other im-portant dates: the 20th convention and

Israel’s 70th anniversary. Together with1,010 participants, at an evening talk onIsrael and a gala evening (among othertimes), we were able to see and hear whatgreat things the Lord has done! And notjust in the 50 years of Midnight CallBrazil.

At the mission site, we converted threeformer office spaces into a larger class-room, in order to be able to offer biblicalinstruction and courses again after manyyears. This task has been undertaken pri-marily by Pastor Daniel Lima.

Almost in parallel to the rebuilding ofthe schoolroom, we were able to makevarious improvements to the print studio,so that all the machines are now in onebig room. The workflow has been simpli-fied and is now much more practical.

Hope for the NationIn October, there was a new round of presi-dential elections. Despite the opinion of al-most all the press, the nation didn’t elect inJair Bolsonaro a right-wing extremist, woman-hater, etc. Instead, they chose a man who hasbuilt his governing team from many goodprofessionals, self-professed Christians amongthem, and who wants to work more closelywith Israel in the future. Israeli President Ben-jamin Netanyahu was even present at his in-auguration. That was one reason why he wasso attacked by many, and is still being at-tacked.

At the same time, this is a good beginningto Brazil’s fresh start. For five years, the coun-try has been stumbling from one corruptionscandal to the next, implicating hundreds ofpoliticians and dozens of businesspeople. Anew beginning is coming, hopefully one inwhich common sense (rather than left-lean-ing ideology) comes into effect. In his inau-

Hopeful in the Year 2019

Brazil is on the cusp of a fresh start. This could also positively impact ourmissionary work. A look back, and a look to the future.

gural speech, Bolsonaro declared that hewanted to put an end to “political correct-ness.” This means that he will try to roll backsome rulings; for example, by removing gen-der ideology from schools. We hope and praythat entirely new things would happen in thecountry. While these lines are being written,we’re still at the beginning of the new term ofoffice. The markets are responding positivelyto the new tones coming from Brasília.

In the facility, we’re planning to offer onlinecourses taught by Pastor Daniel, so that lead-ers from other parts of the country can alsobenefit. At the same time, our devotions havebeen airing daily since January 1st on RadioBBN, which broadcasts from the US to Brazil.Pray with us that these two opportunitiesspeak to many and that they will avail them-selves of our offer of literature, so that fruitmay emerge to the honor of our faithful God.

This year, for the first time, our trip withBrazilians to Europe will be officially takingplace. The goal is for the participants to get toknow the headquarters of our ministry. At thesame time, we want to visit places like Zurich,Basel, Wartburg Castle and Wittenberg (Re-formation), and Buchenwald, Berchtesgaden, and Berlin (history).

Sebastian Steiger graduated from universitylast December and has been working full-time, and no longer half-time, in the editorialdepartment. As a team, the editorial staff hasset a goal of publishing at least one book permonth. Pray that we can stay the course, sincethe state of the Christian book market isn’teasy. We have had difficult years behind us,and are very hopeful that the country will beable to move forward economically underthe new government.

Something that I enjoy about my work as amedical doctor at Ebenezer Home, is the free-dom to pray with the residents.

On Thursday mornings, our head nurse, Kristin, and I make a “home visit” to each resident. Weknock on their door and chat for a few minutesabout their medical concerns, family, how to makegood Arabic coffee or apple pies. A few of our resi-dents are unable to make conversation; their mem-ory of language has eroded with the years. Theysuffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Tina (name has been changed) would have rarelymissed a mid-week prayer meeting or a Saturdayservice during her many years of faithful participa-tion in Bethesda congregation in Haifa. Now, she isunable to communicate either in English, hermother tongue, or in Hebrew, the language of heradopted country. Tina needs help to eat, to wash, and to dress; she has forgotten how to walk, andmost of the day she sits in a wheelchair. It is ourprivilege to pray for her on Thursday mornings.

Tina was born in 1924 into a Jewish family wholived in Berlin. Her family moved to England just af-ter Hitler came to power, but before World War 2.Her parents were not observant Jews and keen tohide their Jewish identity. Tina and her olderbrother were sent to a Christian school in London, where they were taught about Jesus. Her parents

had no objection to her baptism into the Anglicanchurch. Already as a teenager, the truth that sheheard about her Messiah led to a personal and livingfaith.

After studying nursing, Tina dedicated three yearsto intensive Bible training. She continued to work asa general nurse until God called her to Israel. Shejoined a medical mission based in Haifa, and was ac-tive in their clinic and in the community. Tina is oneof the founding members of Ebenezer Home.

I have known Tina for over twenty years; we bothcome from England, and in the past have enjoyed aproper cup of tea together, and scones with plentyof raspberry jam and whipped cream. For manyyears, she faithfully prayed for our family.

Tina never got married and she has no family inIsrael; the congregation and Ebenezer Home—weare her family. We have the privilege and the re-sponsibility to care for her, as she cared for manyothers. A number of our residents simply don’t havefamilies to care for them; some have been aban-doned by their children because of their faith in Je-sus the Messiah. Others are survivors of theHolocaust or immigrants from low-income families.

Tina’s life has been full of friendship, service andprayer. I believe that now in her weakness, for aslong as her Maker chooses to give her life, she con-tinues to serve His purposes as His child.
