PRESTON, JEROME
1899-1995
Gift of his family
A collection reflecting the business, family, community, cultural,
domestic, and foreign policy interests of Mr. Preston.
The earliest items in the collection are his diaries from World
War I in which he served as a volunteer in the American Ambulance
Field Service assigned to The French 130th Infantry Division.
After the United States entered the war in August 1917 he enlisted
in the U.S. Army and was left at his post with the French. Mr. Preston
had left Harvard College to join the war
in 1917 and he returned to earn his degree in 1920. During World
War II he served in the U.S. Air Service Command assigned to
statistical control in England. He left as a full colonel.
His professional life was spent as a bond salesman in the investment
field. He founded the investment management firm
Preston, Moss & Co.
His close association with Boston University and the University
Hospital began in 1927 when he was named Treasurer of the
Massachusetts Memorial Hospital. He later served as President
and Chairman of the Hospital Board of Trustees, as well as a
trustee of the university. Boston University conferred an honorary
Doctor of Laws degree on him in 1973.
The collection contains his World War I diaries and papers and
reports from his World War II service. There are files of
family papers, correspondence with friends and acquaintances,
his correspondence with prominent persons on domestic and
foreign policy issues, and files related to his association
with Boston University Medical Center and his talks at events
there. Files of his frequent trips to foreign countries are
described in mimographed letters sent home to his children.
