TRANSCRIPT

The IRC’s Mission is to bring classic absurdist theatre to an international audience in the Philadelphia region. These rarely-produced, renowned plays explore and illuminate the human purpose and meaning, promoting reflection about the human condition in a contemporary world.

We are committed to producing intelligent, thought-provoking experiences featuring performances that are ironic, humorous, buoyant and infectious. The content is designed to displace and transform the audience’s perspective, using text and language as one piece of a sensory experience that illustrates and wrestles with ideas that words alone cannot convey.

The IRC experience is an exciting and challenging journey for seekers from all walks of life on multiple platforms: philosophical, psychological, physical and spiritual. Our dedicated group of artists invites you to explore with us these questions and share the word with friends; since 2006, a loyal IRC audience has been built largely through word of mouth.

Welcome to the IRC Funhouse of Big Ideas and Controlled Insanity. Your ticket purchase today will help produce Exit the King, a hilariously operatic gem by one of the leaders of the absurdist movement, that earned actor Geoffrey Rush a Tony Award for his role as King Berenger in the 2009 Broadway production. Like Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco is aging well. His writing sparkles with relevance, for he paid no mind to the social response to his work. He directed his intelligence and his art towards simple things - death and loneliness - and he wrote about them with a keen eye, a hilarity and a clarity that earned him a reputation as a fiercely difficult playwright. In his 1958 review of a revival of Ionesco's play The Chairs, English critic Kenneth Tynan accused Ionesco of turning his back on reality. "M. Ionesco certainly offers an 'escape from realism': but an escape into what? A blind alley, perhaps... [his] theatre is pungent and exciting, but it remains a diversion. It is not on the main road." Ionesco's reply prompted a storm of controversy: "When my lieutenant and my boss are back in their homes, alone in their rooms, they could, for example, just like me, being outside the social order, be as afraid of death as I am, have the same dreams and nightmares, and having stripped off their social personality, suddenly find themselves naked, like a body stretched out on the sand, amazed to be there and amazed at their own amazement, amazed at their own awareness as they are confronted with the immense ocean of the infinite, alone in the brilliant, inconceivable and indisputable sunlight of existence. And it is then that my general or my boss can be identified with me. It is in our solitude that we can all be reunited." As we head in to this election year, with right and left ideologies collapsing into an explosive cacophony of words apparently communicating something, it strikes one that Ionesco's dark but surprisingly joyous vision was more prescient than was accepted in his time.

Andrew Carroll (Bert Limbic) loves the IRC, to begin with. This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the bio he's about to relate. With the IRC, he's loved fairies in Ondine, had a dalliance or two with Durang, and thrown a good handful of fits in Misalliance. If you find his work groovy, come check out Noises Off over at Curio Theatre Company (running currently) or check back in with the IRC in February to see him tackle Gogol's The Government Inspector. Love to Tina,

Bob, Jenn, and the hoarde of wee beasties.

Liam Castellan (Frank Voss) has lost count of how many "Onion" fundraisers he's performed at. He loves this stuff. Acting credits include The Arsonists and a few shorts with IRC, Sense & Sensibility and other roles at Hedgerow, and thirteen roles with Curio Theatre. Directing credits include Hedgerow, Curio, PDC, Walking Fish, and Plays & Players. He will pursue an MFA in Directing at Indiana University, beginning in August. www.liamcastellan.com

Previous productions include Misalliance, The Gnädiges Fraulein, The Madwoman of Chaillot, The Arsonists, Marriage, two Raw Onions, Impassioned Embraces, Ivona, Princess of Burgundia, Paradise Park and The Castle. John would like to thank Tina, the Cast, the Crew, Lauren, Alexander, Family, Friends and You for supporting the Arts.

Tomas Dura (Larry Gronzic) has toured Europe, Canada and the U.S. and has appeared in film, video and television. He is best known as a flamenco dancer in addition to being an actor, musician and fire eater. He worked with the great flamenco dancer, Jose Greco, for 8 years, frequently serving as assistant during Mr. Greco's last years. He dances in the movie, Cafe, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, and has worked in the films Smoke and Mirrors (director K. Hardy), Loneliness (director M. Zubarev) and About Angels

(Zubarev). In 2007 Tomas performed solo with the Philadelphia
