Regular readers of “Waterside Life” will recall us previously featuring Porto delgi Argonauti in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, and in this edition

we take a closer look at what this stunning new marina resort destination offers both the yachtsman and those who prefer to remain shore-based.

For those who enjoy exploring pastures anew by boat, the geographic location of Porto degli Argonauti is the ideal starting point from which to set sail to discover the coasts of the Lucania, Calabria, and Apulia, whilst for those tempted to venture further afield Sicily, the Greek Islands and Turkey are all within reach. Its southerly position also ensures a superb climate, giving a longer boating season than you might find on the CÔte d’ Azur or the Spanish costas; so much so in fact that Porto degli Argonauti was the first port on the Basilicata coast to open all year round. Unlike some marinas, Porto degli Argonauti remains active throughout the winter months, with many boat owners taking part in the Winter Sailing Series Regattas that run from October to April – and be assured that winter sailing in the southern Mediterranean is a world apart from winter sailing in The Solent!

The marina holds the prestigious 5 Gold Anchor grading awarded by The Yacht Harbour Association, and in addition to its 450 berths (capable of accommodating boats up to 30 metres LOA, and available for short or long term rent, or for purchase), Porto degli Argonauti offers full boatyard repair and maintenance facilities including a boat hoist, secure ashore storage, and a highly skilled team of marine technicians and engineers, together with all the other “essentials” that today’s discerning yacht owner has come to expect.

Asides from knowing that their pride and joy is in good hands, boat owners also look for first rate restaurants, bars and shops in their chosen port, and once again Porto degli Argonauti does not disappoint, with the “Piazzetta” area of the marina being a wonderful place to enjoy an al fresco dinner or an evening stroll along the waterfront.

Porto degli Argonauti not only has its own yacht club and

sailing school (which offers a whole range of other water sports and recreational activities), it also boasts an open-air cinema and an amphitheatre, as well as playing host to the very popular Argo-jazz festival in July and August.

Even the most committed land-lubbers enjoy a day at the beach, and the private beach close to the marina is nothing short of spectacular! Just a short stroll from the marina, >p.24
