WALKING AROUND the town, as Ido once a month delivering themagazine, certainly gives you a dif-ferent perspective from, say, pop-ping into town in the car to pick upa bit of shopping.

There are some simply stunninghouses, of all shapes and sizes, andour town enjoys amazing views inall directions. And just when youthink you’ve seen it all, you stumbleupon another hidden gem.

That was certainly the case forme when I discovered IvybridgeBowling Club. I was delivering oneof the early issues of the magazinein Bridge Park, busily poppingmagazines through doors, whensuddenly a green and pleasantoasis appeared!

This quiet, pristine square ofgrass seemed to be a world awayfrom the busy Exeter Road andhustle and bustle of Fore Street notfar away.

As it turns out, the bowling club’sgreen has been in Bridge Park fornearly 90 years, as the feature onpage nine reveals.

INSIDE THIS MONTHAn exciting new scheme to encour-age residents to think ‘IvybridgeFirst’ for shopping and services hasbeen launched, which gives you thechance to win a monthly prize of£100 - see page five for details.

We are being encouraged to enjoythe great outdoors this month withthe return of the Ivybridge Walking& Outdoor Festival. It’s all aboutenjoying and exploring the won-derful countryside around us andwhether you want to walk, cycle orrun there is an event for you – de-tails on page 17.

Also this month, the library andtown council launch their DiamondJubilee poetry competition (page13), a group of cadets are busy train-ing for a gruelling charity trek (page30), and we have details of Easterservices at the town’s churches(page 24). Plus there is the usualcommunity news, clubs and groups, school reports and regular columns.

Don’t forget, as well as the printedversion of the magazine, you canread it on all the latest gadgets, in-cluding iPad and smartphones, in-deed anywhere you can get on theinternet! To find out how, go to ourFacebook page – facebook.com/theivybridgemagazine.

I hope you enjoy reading this issue!

CONCERNS FOR THE safety of the increasing number ofpeople who attend the town’s Remembrance Day serv-ice has prompted a call to the town council to considerre-locating the town’s War Memorial.

Last year’s service is estimated to have attracted over2,500 people and this year it is anticipated that this figurewill be even higher as Armistice Day falls on a Sunday.

The current location also leads to frustration for par-ticipants, who are unable to see and appreciate the serv-ice taking place, suffers from background noise from theriver, leads to the inconvenience of road closures and isincreasingly costly to police, the council was told.

Land at the entrance to Erme Court car park was sug-gested as one possible site, and would be big enough toaccommodate the town’s American memorial as well.

Another suggestion gaining support is that, if it wasfelt that the War Memorial should be moved then itshould become the centre piece of a new town square, the development of which was one of the key recom-mendations to come out of the masterplanning process.

Plenty ofends in sight

With the town’s bowling greenset to open for the new seasonthis month, we take a look atthe history of bowls in the town

When the firstwood rolls on thepristine, carpet-like green tomark the start of

the new season, one of Ivybridge’slongest established, but also perhapslittle known, clubs will embark onanother season of friendly and com-petitive sport in the heart of the town.

Ivybridge Bowls Club was estab-lished at Bridge Park in 1923, and tothis day continues to play this most

gentle of past times at its peacefuloasis within a residential area at theeastern end of town.

While there appears to be norecord of a bowling green in Ivy-bridge previous to 1923, there weremembers who bought the land forthe new bowling green, so did theyplay elsewhere?

Membership of the club in thosedays consisted of the business gen-tlemen in and around Ivybridge. With the outbreak of World War II,

the men went away to serve in theforces and the club all but closed. However, in 1947 the manager ofStowford Mill came to the rescueand placed the Bowling Club intothe care of the then ‘Portals AthleticClub’ (this was the name of thepaper mill’s sports club at that time).

It was due to the generosity of thePaper Mill that the Bowling Clubsurvived these difficult years. Theypaid for a new green to be laid in1956, and improved facilities, in-cluding toilets and a kitchen sinkand changing rooms for visitors, asthe years went by.

This support, in addition to fullymaintaining the bowling surface, carried on until the 1990s.

Old photographs show there wasno special dress code for members, who played in their everydayclothes. By 1963, however, more at-tention was given to dressing cor-rectly for the game.

It was not until the 1950s thatladies were invited to bowl on thegreen, but ‘only when the men werenot wanting to play’. A few ladies didplay occasionally in those days, but

only for a year or two.A ladies section was officially es-

tablished in 1979 and from small be-ginnings, six ladies, has gone fromstrength-to-strength and is now anintegral, flourishing part of the club, able to meet all the challenges of thepresent day.

A year earlier, in 1978, it wasagreed that juniors, 16 to 18 yearsold, could join the club.

As the club grew stronger, thepaper mill decided, in 1998, to handthe responsibility of the club back toits members, so, once again, Ivy-bridge Bowls Club became com-pletely independent.

It is very much a self-help club, with all the maintenance and care ofthe green and clubhouse done byvolunteers, which as well as foster-ing a close-knit club atmospherealso keeps the members’ fees downto a minimum.

Members enjoy many opportuni-ties to play bowls, both competitivelyand in relaxed and friendly situa-tions, such as a ‘Wednesday clubnight’ and ‘Monday morning roll-ups’. Friendly mixed matches against

other clubs are played both homeand away and numerous in-housecompetitions are played each year.

The men and women’s sectionsboth play in their respective Ply-mouth and District leagues and thosemembers who have the time and de-sire enter County competitions; overthe years, they have brought back im-pressive honours to the club.

Members are currently workingagainst the clock to finish work im-proving the clubhouse facilities intime for the opening day of the 2012season on Saturday, 14 April.

The club would be delighted towelcome new members for the com-ing season. They offer free coachingfor beginners and improvers andequipment is available on loan. There are no age restrictions for clubmembership, and bowls is a gamethat can be played from early teensthrough to 70/80+ years of age.

Ivybridge Bowling Club is a mixed, friendly club with a wide range ofabilities and ages and offers a greatopportunity to play recreational andcompetitive bowling at its peacefuloasis in the heart of the town.

Migrating birds are now begin-ning to return after spendingthe winter in southern Europeand Africa. One you might

hear rather than see is the chiffchaff, with a song that sounds like its name.Towards the end of April we expect tohear the first cuckoo, a bird now sadlyin sharp decline. We have not heard it inIvybridge for several years but it is oftenheard on the golf course at Wrangaton. The amazing photo of an enormousyoung cuckoo being fed by a tinymeadow pipit was taken last summernear Vennford Reservoir by John Wal-ters, a brilliant local wildlife photographer. The female cuckoo found a meadowpipit’s nest, tipped one of the eggs outand laid one of her own which lookedalmost identical. When it hatched, theyoung cuckoo, still blind, got rid of theremaining eggs and was fed by the

meadow pipits on insects and furrycaterpillars until it could survive on itsown and eventually fly back to Africa. You may not hear or see a cuckoo butyou cannot fail to see the primroses thatgrow in our hedgerows. We tend to takethem for granted but they do not grow likethis in most other parts of the country. They have a special association with Ivy-bridge as the owners of the paper millused to send out boxes containing two

posies of primroses to their customersand friends, up to 11,000 annually. Eachposy had to contain 50 flowers and fiveleaves and was supposed to be picked infarmers’ fields. However, many werepicked from roadside verges and therewas mounting opposition to the practicefrom the 1960s. It finally stopped in 1989.Fortunately, there are still plenty of prim-roses in the hedgerows and in placessuch as the attractive wild flower cornerof Victoria Park planted by the children.

Our next walk is on 19 April, at 10am,around the cliffs at Noss Mayo, lookingfor incoming migrants and wild flowers.Details are on the DWT website and inNewsome’s window. All welcome.

A VISIT FROM an author was one of thehighlights of Woodlands Park PrimarySchool’s Reading Week, as Lily Evans(9) and Immogen Pope (9) report:

This week has been reading week.An author called Tom McLaughlincame in and read us one of his stories. The story he read was called Diaboli-cal Mr Tiddles. The story was about acat called Mr Tiddles who wants toplease his owner by giving him lots ofpresents.

The owner wonders after a whilewhere the presents come from, so one

night the owner follows Mr Tiddlesand finds out where the presentscome from...

After the story Tom answered someof our questions: When did you get theidea to write stories? How many bookshave you written? How long does ittake to write one story? Which do youdo first, illustrating or writing?

Tom then showed us how to drawMr Tiddles and we had our own go atdrawing Mr Tiddles. Tom was kindenough to sign some of our owndrawings.

Cadets from Ivybridge willbe embarking on a gru-elling trek the length ofHadrian’s Wall this sum-

mer to raise money for a charitywhich supports wounded armedforces personnel.

Members of the Ivybridge detach-ment, Devon Army Cadet Force, willbe the first British cadets to take onsuch a walk for the benefit of injuredBritish forces personnel and hope toraise at least £10,000 for the Walkingwith the Wounded charity, whosepatron is Prince Harry.

A small expedition team of 12-14youngsters has been selected fromDevon Army Cadet Force, many ofwhom are with the Ivybridge de-tachment and attend the commu-nity college, including the currentLord Lieutenants Cadet, JamesMousley, who is studying for A-lev-els at ICC. Other members of theteam come from the Plymouth area.

The team will cover the equivalentof a marathon a day, and camp

overnight, when they take on thechallenge between 25-30 July.

As well as the fulfilment of a teamchallenge, for some members of theexpedition team there will be a greatsense of personal achievement too.Josh Cavill contracted meningitistwo years ago and he is determinedto complete the expedition andraise a substantial amount of moneyfor Walking with the Wounded.

The idea for the expedition wasborn after Gary Thomasson, leaderof Ivybridge detachment, attendedan inspirational evening and pres-entation by Captain Martin Hewitt(British Army) and Inge Solheim(Polar Guide). Gary came away con-vinced that such a challenge wouldnot only be an important educa-tional experience for those takingpart but also significantly aid theirpersonal development, both as indi-viduals and team members.

The team is undergoing a rigoroustraining schedule to improve fitness, stamina and team work, with walks

of at least 40 miles over a weekendon Dartmoor and the South WestCoast Path planned between nowand the expedition.

“We have been blown away by thecommitment shown by the cadets,”says Kirsty Cavill, an adult teammember who will be supporting theteam on the challenge. “They havegiven up their weekends for trainingwalks, and will have to give up partof their school summer holiday aswell, and approach every walk withgood spirits and an impressive levelof dedication.

“The aim of the challenge is toraise as much money as possible fora very worthwhile charity, so if Ivy-bridge residents or businesses cansupport these terrific youngsters inany way that would be great.”

Take BETTER PHOTOSMore tips on how to improve the images you take using your digital camera from David Rayner of Ivybridge & District Camera Club

April 2012 THE IVYBRIDGE MAGAZINE 31

I PROMISED you a few ex-amples illustrating cre-ative use of the zoomfacility last month, so thistime we have more photosthan usual, but hopefullyit will inspire you to ven-ture outside this springand use your zoom in con-junction with some of theother tips we’ve discussed.

My photo of a newlyemerged dragonfly stillclinging to its exuvia hasbeen very successful forme in competitions, helped by compositionalelements such as theshape of the body curv-ing to the wings. But itwas both my positionand the use of a highamount of zoom magnifi-cation that allowed me tomake this image.

Using your position aswell as the zoom is goingto be a strong element inthis month’s tips, but Ishan’t expect you to lie ona scaffold plank stretchedacross your garden pondfor several hours as I didfor this photograph.

However, some othertips I used may be usefulto you. Firstly, I thoughtabout distance. The closeryou get to the subject andthe highest zoom you haveresults in even a smallsubject filling the frame. However, there is a mini-mum distance that thelens will focus properly atand so I found this first, then moved back a little.

Next, I knew this was anopportunity of a lifetime,so wanted the best qualityimage and opted for natu-ral light; a low ISO for lownoise in the black back-ground, and an f-numberof 6.3 to ensure enough

depth of field for thewhole insect. This meant Iwas only getting 1/20thsecond shutter speed, fartoo slow for a sharp image.I couldn’t use a tripod, butI did rest my elbows on theplank, which helped, butmy saving technique wastwo-fold and it’s a pair oftips you can use for manyof your photos.

The main strategy herewas to take many, manyphotographs in the hopethat one would besnapped at the momentthe insect stopped jigglingand when my hands weresteady too. As I had plentyof time while the insectdeveloped, I varied thecamera settings fre-quently, but in the end the

best photo was this one, taken at the lowest shutterspeed! Do think about tak-ing multiple shots, varyingyour position and also thecamera settings, particu-larly ISO and aperture.

The image of blackber-ries was taken to illustrateautumn in Ivybridge and isa quite different approach. The image was intendedfor a website and so colourand impact was more im-portant than ultimatesharpness. I took the photowith my compact camerawith the ISO at 800 butusing the widest zoom Ihad (24mm) and handholding the camera abovemy head and standing ontiptoe! Using a wide zoomalways gives a better depthof field but I also set thecamera to f8 to help somemore with this. Compactcameras will focus at sur-prisingly close distanceswhen set to the wide end ofthe zoom and this enabledme to make the berries re-ally stand out in the image.

Finally, I want to illus-trate that zoom is useful asa compositional tool. Inthe photo of two boats atPort Lligat I was able tokneel down to include theforeground beach timbers.A combination of my posi-tion on the beach and set-ting a matching zoomenabled me to keep thebackground details infocus and the foregroundacceptably sharp as well. Ittook but a minute or two tofind the right spot fromwhich to to take this image.

It is always worth vary-ing your settings and posi-tion, both up and downand back and forth to finda ‘different’ photo.

If you have recently bought a puppy, thehope is that it will share your life for thenext 12-16 years. It therefore pays tostart off with a healthy puppy and to getgood advice on how to keep it that way.Book a visit to the vet for a healthcheck, vaccination, worming, mi-crochipping, and to discuss feeding, exercise and neutering.Vaccinations can start as young aseight weeks old, with a 2nd one twoweeks later (and for puppies youngerthan 12 weeks on their 2nd vaccina-tion, a 3rd one at 16 weeks). The first health check is very importantas it can pick up on any potentialproblems, eg ear mites, fleas, mange, hernias, heart murmurs, in-turned eye-lids etc, which can then be treatedbefore they become established. It is important to socialise your puppy toprevent it becoming fearful or aggres-sive in later life. Your vet may hostpuppy parties, or will be able to directyou to some. This can be started be-

fore the vaccination course has finishedif it’s taking place in a safe environment.Worming your puppy is another es-sential. This should have started be-fore you get it home, with the ownerworming the bitch throughout preg-nancy. The pups should also havebeen wormed fortnightly from twoweeks old. If unsure, you should wormyour puppy at the time of vaccination, and after 12 weeks old, a minimum ofevery three months. If you have youngchildren or your dog regularly goes toplaces where young children play, youshould carry on with monthly worming.Nationally, the amount of Toxocara

canis eggs in the environment is ris-ing. This is the worm that can causeblindness if ingested. I advise youweigh your dog or puppy and buy asafe wormer from your vet that is ef-fective against the dog and fox lung-worm that we get in the South West. There are as many recommendationsfor nutrition as there are breeders. Iwould advise that you feed a goodquality complete life-stage diet for thefirst 12 months of your puppy’s life, especially if you have a large or giantbreed pup. A natural raw meat andbone diet is possible and is certainlygood for the teeth, but it needs re-search and commitment to do. The best advice I can give you is toresearch breeders if you want a pedi-gree, and be prepared to travel to geta good one. Consider rescuing a dog,or getting a healthy crossbreed.Do not buy a puppy you feel sorry foras you will probably be sorry you did(when you get continued ill health andbehavioural problems).
