The Jabberwock President’s Message What a wonderful 3rd annual leadership conference we had! Special thanks to the Board, and specifically Christina Rodriguez, who took so much time and thought to make it a meaningful and successful day. The breakout speakers were unique and gave such a great variety of information. The goal of the conference was to prove if it could be grown to be profitable and, hopefully one day, become a signature JLB fundraising event. I think it grew tremendously this year and can be considered a huge success. We reached one of the cornerstones of the Junior League mission which is to improve our community and grow women leaders. We are leaving Billings and the women that attended our conference better than we found it. I was so proud to be a part of the organization on Thursday. President’s Message

What a wonderful 3rd annual leadership conference we had! Special thanks to the Board, and specifically Christina Rodriguez, who took so much time and thought to make it a meaningful and successful day. We had 125 attend the event and received primarily positive feedback with some excellent points on what they’d like to see for the future. Dale Smith Thomas seemed to be hugely liked and left attendees with nuggets of very realistic takeaways they could begin introducing immediately into their lives.

What a professional and well implemented event. Thanks to everyone who attended! Jennifer Kautz President, 2018-2019

Communications Council The Communications Council has been trying to analyze what is working for our council and rework those things that are not as efficient or effective. This council encompasses a variety of focus areas including social media, marketing, networking, and internal communication. We also update and maintain our JLB website which takes a lot of time. We have to decide, as volunteers, if it is worth the time and effort we put into it or do we hire this part out. Our council uses Canva to design and create social media posts and have begun to look into Ripl for posting the same message on all of our social me-dia accounts at the same time, thus eliminating a lot of computer time! Thank you for the great tip, Lexie Williams! We post on our social media accounts with Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. We worked hard on growing our LinkedIn network this winter and we now have 163 connections and belong to 5 groups. This is helping to spread our mission farther. Our council also added all JLB events on Facebook and our website. If you ever need more information or feel like an important detail has been left out or is incorrect in any way, please contact any one of the 5 members of our council and we will do what we can to edit the information. These are just a few of the various tasks we do on our council. Since this is the time for nominations, we would like to remind you to start thinking about what council you would like to be on during the next League year. What are we looking for in members of the Communications Council? Do you use social media every day for personal or business? Do you know how to create or maintain a website? Are you aware of any design software and know how to use it? Do you enjoy graphic design? Would you like to try your hand at marketing? Do you have an interest in archiving our League documents and history? Would you like to learn any of these skills? If you are interested in our council, we would love for you to visit with one of us. Amber Erlenbusch Communications Council Leader

Council Hope everyone is having a great winter! Our council has started preparation for MarketPlace Magic 2019. Like last year, we will have raffle basket sign up at the February GMM. We are asking items be dropped off by May. It was helpful to have a head start on baskets this year and hope to continue that trend in 2019. Also, soliciting businesses earlier in the year was helpful! Fund Development Council has part-nered with the Community Council to find funds for laundry. We are looking at any business that would be interested in sponsoring a laundry day in March, April or May. Sponsorship can include funds, volunteers or both. If you know of any business that would be interested, please let Emily or myself know. Finally, Fund Development is hoping to work with any restaurant/business that partners with nonprofits for donations. We have contacted Hooligans and McKenzie River. The council members are working on contacting additional res-taurants. If you know of any others, please let me know. Thanks for being part of the JLB! FEBRUARY 13, 2019 TRENDS IN NONPROFIT TALENT DEVELOPMENT

Talent is the most important resource nonprofits have to achieve their missions. We can’t agree more because supporting our members' growth in civic leadership talent is one of the key priorities for all Junior Leagues.

In this webinar, Monisha will help you think through how your League can improve its membership development programs. She will discuss:

2019 trends in talent development and their implications

Ways to alleviate stress and burnout

How to close the racial leadership gap

Best practices in managing difficult conversation

Taking advantage of increased competition for talent in the sector

Collaborating for organizational and systems change

Join us to hear from this passionate leader on what it takes to develop non-profit talent!

Community Council

Hello wonderful ladies of the Junior League of Billings! We have had a successful and jam packed first half of our Junior League Year! As a quick update on how things are going I would like to inform everyone that our Free Laundry Day has officially taken off and is busy as ever! With only five laundry days completed we have spent over $2000.00 supplying free washing and drying to those in need. That’s already about ⅔ of our total budgeted year! As a path forward we have decided to start looking for laundry sponsors with our first already being secured by Madyson Frick and D.A. Davidson! They will be partnering with the Junior League of Billings for the February Free Laundry Day and provided $550.00 for the service! We are still looking for laundry sponsors for the months of March, April and May so if you know of a great business connection who might be interested in sponsoring one of those months contact me at [email protected]. We will be sponsoring the January month on the 26th from 10 am - 2 pm at BYO Laundry. We have been sending the laundry flyers to more organizations so expect a big turnout! If you know of any organizations that should be added to our list of recipients for our laundry flyer please email their contact information to me at the above email address.

As always, let me know if you want to get more involved in the Free Laundry Day Project and keep an eye open for more service projects outside of laundry in the next coming months!

Cheers, Emily Hoskins

Membership Council Wow. What an amazing conference! I truly walked away feeling inspired and empowered. It was so enjoyable to hear all the positive feedback from the attendees and the wheels are already turning with ideas for next year. Thank you to all those who helped with the planning, marketing, presenting, and executing. It was an amazing team effort and I thank you all for your participation. However, the year isn’t over yet! We still have a lot more things going on. On January 28th, we will have our Open House. Please invite any wonderful women in your network who would be interested in joining the Junior League. It will be from 6-8 p.m. at the Moss Mansion. As we kick off the spring training class, we are looking for volunteers to mentor new members. This is truly the big-gest impact you can make to help new members become engaged and feel welcome joining the League. If you are interested, please contact Jessica Taylor.
