Built in the clas- sic Greek revival style, inn’s exteri- or evokes images of the tradition- al Old South, complete with soaring white columns and a tranquil landscape. The inn’s interior is warm and lux- urious, offering the very latest amenities and services. Local designer Bobbi Rushing created the cozy rooms to compliment the inn’s elegant, yet laid back style. Visitors may find they never want to leave. According to Everett Royal, owner of The James Madison Inn, the community park, currently under con- struction across the street, is the main reason he chose to build a hotel in the downtown area. With gazebos, a Great Lawn and a restored house from the 1800s that will be used by the local artists’ guild, the park will add to the already-existing charm of this delightful Southern town. “It (the park) was a dream, and we were one of the first people to donate to the park fund,” Royal said. “I didn’t commit to build a hotel until we knew the park would be in place. Half of the rooms in the hotel face the park. It will be a gathering place for the community.” In addition to their proximity to one another, the inn and the park will share historical elements that will allow them to fit seamlessly together. Royal said both the columns used to build the front of the inn and what will be the “Parthenon-like” bandstand at the park were both taken from a house on a marsh on St. Simon’s Island that had been scheduled for demoli- tion. With tranquil views of the park across the way, vis- itors will delight in the gen- erously-sized and elegantly-appointed rooms of the inn. Rushing designed each space with custom-designed fur- niture and exquisite antique reproductions. Each of the guest rooms is named after one of the gorgeous antebel- lum homes in the Madison area and offers amenities such as 600 thread-count sheets, built-in fireplaces, furnished porches with ceiling fans, and free wireless Internet. Fresh flowers and a library of books further accentuate each pri- vate sanctuary. In addition to building an elegant inn for visitors to enjoy, Royal is dedicated to supporting the local art com- munity. Beautiful works by local artists adorn the walls at The James Madison Inn, many of which depict the grand, historic homes in the area. Madison is a true haven for antique shoppers and art lovers alike. More and more, Royal said, historic towns, such as Madison, Savannah and Charleston, are drawing visitors for more than a day or a single night. As gas prices continue to go up, he said people are turning day trips into overnight destinations, not only for a week- end but for extended stays as well. “It’s really hard to participate in what Madison is
