YOUNG LEADERSHIP LECTURE SERIES

From Sinai to Jerusalem Rabbi Dovid Zirkind, Associate Rabbi

The first of two parshiyot that we read this

week, describes the sabbatical schedule of

Shemitta and Yovel. Every seven years the land

lays fallow and after seven cycles of seven

years the fiftieth year is a Jubilee, a year of

extensive freedom and a year of return. By way

of introduction, our Parsha opens this chapter

with: “Hashem spoke to Moshe at Sinai, say-

ing…” Rashi raises a well-known question. Con-

sidering that the majority of our commandments

were given at Sinai, why does only this com-

mandment reference its point of origin? Alterna-

tively, why is this Parsha called “Be’har” and not

any other?

Shlomo Ephraim Luntschitz, the 16th century Rab-

bi of Prague, suggests in his Kli Yakar, that the

memory of Sinai is absolutely essential to under-

standing the purpose of Shemitta and Yovel.

Yes, the economic and spiritual implications of

Shemitta are self-evident, but the paradigm on

which it was patterned is often forgotten. The

cycle of seven Shemitta years followed by a

Yovel, is meant to mirror the original Sefirat Ha-

Omer, the seven weeks that preceded the

50th day, namely Shavuot. Just seven weeks

after the Exodus, when the Torah was given,

Sinai become a restricted area; the people

could not approach, the animals were forbidden

to graze. Yovel and all its restrictions, recalls

that holiest of moments, as every fiftieth year is

meant to remind us of the day we received the

Torah. Thus, argues the Kli Yakar, no mitzvah is

more deserving of a reference to Har Sinai than

Yovel, the mitzvah that weaves the memory of

Shavuot into daily life in the land of Israel.

In the course of daily life it is easy to forget the

historical context of our existence. We may find

ourselves frustrated at work, struggling socially,

or content with the success we’ve achieved. But

how often do we zoom out to appreciate the

remarkable story of which we are but one small

chapter? The mitzvot of Shemitta and Yovel are

more than strategic agricultural initiatives or

creative approach to national economic equali-

ty, they are designed to inspire reflection and

self-awareness about the great fortune we have

to share in a national destiny with our fellow

Jews. A farmer whose Yovel year is only for rest

but not for context, has missed the deeper mes-

sage to which Yovel’s shofar harkens.

As we prepare to celebrate Jerusalem’s

50th this week, let us remember more than fifty

years of growth, but thousands. Let Jerusalem

remind us of Yovel, and Yovel remind us of Si-

nai. So that when we approach Shavuot this

year we can celebrate the holiday of harvest

with the realization that generations of toil have

produced the beautiful fruits which we are so

fortunate to reap today.
