The YBYC board met on 4/3. Among items on their agenda were: Our commodore has had to withdraw from the office and we need a new commodore; some renters have been leaving the clubhouse in an un-tidy condition, so cleaning deposits were discussed; on the positive side, rentals have been frequent; post-ponement of the Spring Regatta is likely due to a number of factors in-cluding few boats entered, and lim-ited clubhouse availability; our kay-aks have been moved to a rack be-side the clubhouse, and will soon be available for member use again; kayak use protocol was dis-cussed; the High School Sailing Team has been very busy, and has regattas every weekend in April; lots of help will be needed for the HS re-gatta here on 4/14.

Bunnies Bringing Storms Though there have been a few nice days this month, it

seems like they come sandwiched between wet and wild

storms blowing in off the Pacific. With the first day of

Wednesday racing only 2 weeks away, one wonders

when there will be time to get the boat prepped and in

the water, but we have faith it will happen, probably just

in time. We had a small but productive session a few

weeks ago getting the clubhouse spruced up a bit, but

there are still some things to do, like painting. Stay tuned

for word of the next work party, and plan on joining us!

  • Commodore’s Report Due to family issues I will no longer be able to carry on as Commodore.

I will still be around and willing to help when I'm there.

Keep on sailing, may the winds always be in your favor.

    Sincerely.

  • Race and Cruise News

The final two Wednesday “Get Ready to Race” programs will be held April 11 and 18th,

and will cover Sail Trim and Tactics, with rules review as requested. This has been a well-

received series which we’ll try to make an annual event.

Spring Regatta is going to be rescheduled for Memorial Day weekend, May 26 and 27,

with the hope that we can get more entries and more volunteer commitment by then. An add-

ed bonus to the postponement is the chance for better weather to race in. Please let me know

if you’re going to race or want to volunteer to make this a success, we need your participation.

Meanwhile, on the weekend of April 28, for anyone interested, we‘re planning an informal boat

parade, fun race/cruise sail out to #7 and down to #14, with a dock party or raft-up after, as a

celebration of the start of the new sailing season and generally to “show the flag” in our Bay.

There will be a sign-up sheet at the next potluck/monthly meeting April 21 for Committee Boat

and Chase Boat positions for the Wednesday Spring Series. Get your favorite date(s) then.

  • We’ll be treated to a preview of Summer barbeques this month with Burgers and Hot Dogs provided by the Speers, and with your favorite side dish, salad, dessert or appetizers to go along.

As always, bring your table settings and favorite beverages. Hope to see everyone there.

  • Newport High School Sailors do Great in Diffi-

cult Conditions at Hood River Regatta

Hood River lived up to it’s reputation. Conditions varied from rain to sunshine with sailors seeing everything from very light winds of 4 to 5 miles per hour to winds gusting up to about 20 miles per hour that saw a number of boats capsize. The safety boats did a great job helping those who needed assistance and allow-ing those who were able to right their boats on their own to do so and keep rac-ing. It was fun sailing for all with some windy challenges that all had the oppor-tunity to experience.

The Cubs finished 9th in the Gold Fleet,

which was good enough to qualify the Cubs for a spot in the Gold Fleet in the District Championships. Ronan and Sara man-aged to finish as the best scoring boat in their Division with 21 points for 7 races, with the 2

    nd and 3

rd boats scoring 22 and 24 points in this very competitive group of sailors.

Ronan and Sara’s best races included two 1st first place finishes and two 2

    nd place fin-

ishes. John and Madisen did very well in the challenging conditions and kept their boat upright throughout the regatta which many other sailors were not able to do. Their best finish was a respectable 7

th in a fleet of 12 boats. The mixed Newport - Hood River

    team finished 7th in Silver

Fleet. Kenzie and her crew fin-ished in a very consistent 5

    th

place in all their races on Sat-urday. Full results for Gold Fleet are available here: https://scores.hssailing.org/s18/forrest-cook-ranking/ . Full results for Silver Fleet are available here: https://scores.hssailing.org/s18/forrest-cook-silver-fleet/ ,

In the end all sailors had a great experience. They met new people, interacted with sailors their own age, learned a lot, and most importantly had a great time!

    - Greg Krutzikowsky Ronan and Sara get a great start at the pin end of the line.

Madisen Kinner and Sara Tornelli, from left to right.
