Simon Peter: Flawed but Faithful Disciple
AC 5:14 And all the more believers in the Lord, multitudes of men and women, were constantly added to their number, AC 5:15 to such an extent that they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on
cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on any one of them. One of my favorite people to read about in the New Testament is the Apostle Peter. For me Peter, in all of his humanity, is so very relatable. Peter, the passionate; MT 26:33 But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away.” Peter the fiery; JN 18:10 Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus. Peter the insightful; MT 16:16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Peter the brave; MT 14:29 And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. Peter the uncertain; MT 14:30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me! Peter the coward; MT 26:74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man! Peter the broken; And he went out and wept bitterly. Peter the human rollercoaster! Courageous and insightful one day…uncertain and cowardly the next! I think that is the very thing about Peter that is so relatable. We can relate to his inconsistencies – but Peter also gives us great hope. Because after the resurrection, Jesus was able to transform Peter and use him in such a powerful and eternal way. Peter became a great leader, writer of the Scriptures, evan-gelist, bridge between Jew and Gentile, and healer. So Peter is not only relatable, but gives us hope as well, that as inconsistent as I can be, God can still transform and use us for His glory in wondrous ways.
This is why I chose the study Simon Peter: Flawed but Faithful Disciple for Vacation Bible School for Adults this year. I truly am excited to learn along with you from our teacher Adam Hamilton. Adam is well known here at JHBC as we have joined him on studies now for several years. If you so desire, you can purchase the book as a personal study between now and then, or just come and participate in the DVD based study.
As always, Rich will be coordinating wonderful missions speakers for the week and Scott will be leading music and coordinating for great summer meals. There is no charge but we will have a sign up this week so we can be effective planners. This may also be a great ‘Who’s Your One?’ opportunity, so please prayerfully consider inviting someone to come.
See you at VBS!
Pastor Cal

5: From Cowardice to Courage
I’m writing this the night before I leave for Morehead City on our youth summer mission trip. I’ve spent the hour or so before sitting here at my laptop getting Megan to sleep. She knows I’m leaving for a week, and she’s been talking about missing me for the past few days. This is my 19th mission trip as a minster and 8th trip since she’s been alive (I did two trips in 2013 if you think the math is off). It’s hard to be away, and I had been anticipating this for a little while now, so I’ve been intentional about spending time with her playing games, going out to eat, and just going different places while she’s been out of school this summer. I recently read an article by Kara Powell at the Fuller Youth Institute on how to make the summer unforgettable for your family. To summarize it, she covers four things parents can do to create unforgettable and defining moments in the lives of our children. They are…
1. Bring new twists to summer traditions – This includes looking at what you typically do in the summer and perhaps try something new during it.
2. Be more responsive – Responsiveness shows understanding, validation and car ing, and is shown by spending less time in front of a screen and more time in each other’s presence.
3. Find new (perhaps local) destinations – Think outside the box to try new things. (One of mine was taking Megan to the Waffle House for the first time).
4. Make new food – I’ve discovered that kids are more willing to try something if they have a part in making it. We’ve been intentional about allowing Megan help us make various foods.
Powell concludes the article by saying, “Moments matter, because memories matter.
They help us ground our relationships in shared experience and history. They help us make meaning together. They connect us deeply with the ones for whom we care the most. Here’s to a few more of those moments this summer in all of our families.” May you spend the rest of the summer making unforgettable moments with your family.
Blessings, Rich

Worship Notes from Scott
I recently attended the Lifeway Worship Conference in Gatlinburg. It was my first time attending the event, or experiencing Gatlinburg. The conference was very good, with some great large sessions and a variety of selective conferences, from working with Children's Choirs to "Getting the most out of your microphones". I got to preview the latest music from several music publishers and heard a very nice Christmas collection presented by a church choir from outside of Nashville. You can expect that any number of songs that our Choir will be presenting in the coming months will have been selected because I heard them at this conference. I also got to hear some wonderful singers in concert. One group, Voices of Mobile (from the University of Mobile) actually blew my socks off! They were so impressive. The main speaker preached from one of the most familiar passages in the Bible on the theme of worship, the story of 'the woman at the well'. At one point in that passage, Jesus says,
"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks." - John 4:23.
As so often happens when I am listening to a sermon, the Spirit helped me to contextualize the message. Side note: I think it's a great mystery, how the Lord can use the same passage to speak so clearly to many people, addressing each one of us personally, even though we may come from diverse backgrounds, even languages and cultures. Back on track. It seemed to me that the Lord directed my thought to see worship in a new way, or at least a new facet of worship. Here's what I typed in my Notes app on my phone as the speaker continued to talk. "We all come to the worship service like the woman at the well, looking for something we think we need. But Jesus knows we have deeper, more important needs that He hopes to address in our time together. Like the woman, we come and don't realize that we are standing in the presence of the Lord of the Universe, the Savior of our Souls. We just think we are there for a glass of water." The next day, I continued to be drawn to this thought, even challenged, writing, "Are we aiming too low? Don't settle for what you want (your favorite song/hymn), aim for what God wants." Aiming for what God wants, that may be what it means to "worship the Father in Spirit and truth". I was clearly seeing the woman at the well from a different perspective, and hopefully learning from her experience. I wrote, "When we come to worship, it is not about what I or Cal have planned that is im-portant, it's about what the Lord has planned that we are (or, should be) looking for. Do you know what that is today? Are you listening for it? How does He want you to sing today? How does He want you to pray? What does He have to say to you? Would you ask Him right now to speak to you? What does He desire to hear you sing today?" I didn't know how or if I would share what I was led to write as I sat in that large room. I just knew He had something to say to me. I do know that God wants to connect with each of us in a deep, personal way. And, I know it's a mistake for me, or anyone else, to come to worship just for 'a glass of water'. This Sunday, let me encourage you, before you set foot in the church, to ask God, "What do You want to say to me today?" Then, think about what you want to say to Him. You know, I think He'd love to hear you loudly sing, "I'm a child of God. Yes, I am!"

Who is Watching You?
At the time of this devotional writing, we just finished up with AWANA and Bible
School. Both were great opportunities to teach young children about Jesus in fun,
unique, ways. We also celebrated Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. What a joy and
blessing it is to be a parent!
Proverbs 22:6 says “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is
old, he will not depart from it.”
As we all know, children are very impressionable when they are young. They
take seriously everything they see their parents, grandparents, older siblings and
others do. It is not unusual for children or youth to want to be like someone they’ve
seen. The youngest children see superheroes on TV and want to be Spiderman, Bat-
man, Captain America, Wonder Woman or others. Older children see celebrities or
sports figures they admire and want to be another LeBron James, David Beckham, or
Russell Wilson.
As Christians, do we ever stop and consider that our actions and decisions are
being watched and potentially copied by the people who look up to us? You might
be thinking – “what me, no one looks up to me…”, but stop for a moment and think.
Have there been times that our actions or words, unbeknown to us, have been ob-
served and copied?
Matthew 5:16 – “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your
works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven”.
I have recently been fortunate enough to see where my actions have impact-
ed others positively without me knowing it. Chase and I were sitting in the doctor’s of-
fice the other day waiting for Chase to be seen. An elderly woman came in, sat
down and picked up a Bible that was sitting on a table and began to read. Chase
asked this stranger if she liked reading the Bible and she responded yes. Chase then
proceeded to say “my aunt Ramona likes to read her Bible too. My immediate reac-
tion upon hearing this was, wow, I thought Chase coming into my room during my de-
votional times was interruptions. However, in reality, these were opportunities for
Chase to see me model Christian behavior.
The other opportunity presented itself during the AWANA Grand Prix night. The
father and grandmother of one of our Cubbies, who has been estranged from his
mother for five years, thanked us for the AWANA ministry. The grandmother then
shared with us how Nolan went up to his school teacher and asked her if she knew
God. I must admit that shivers went up my spine and I thank God right there and then
for letting me be a part of the AWANA ministry.
As deacons, teachers, parents, grandparents, employees, employers, etc.
what examples are we setting for others? How might the decisions we make today
affect the decisions of people tomorrow?
Deacon’s Corner (continued) Submitted by Ramona Bowling
Rodney Atkins, a country artist, came out with a song many years ago called
Watching You that sums up tonight’s devotion very well and goes like this….
Watching You, Rodney Atkins https://binged.it/2IgYBBj Driving through town, just my boy and me
With a happy meal in his booster seat
Knowing that he couldn't have the toy
Till his nuggets were gone
A green traffic light turned straight to red
I hit my brakes and mumbled under my breath
As fries went a flying and his orange drink covered his lap
Well, then my four year old said a four letter word
That started with "s," and I was concerned
So I said, "Son, now where did you learn to talk like that?"
He said, "I've been watching you, dad, ain't that cool?
I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you
And eat all my food, and grow as tall as you are
We got cowboy boots and camo pants
Yeah, we're just alike, hey, ain't we dad?
I wanna do everything you do
So I've been watching you."
We got back home, and I went to the barn I
bowed my head, and I prayed real hard
Said, "Lord, please help me help my stupid self."
Then this side of bedtime later that night
Turning on my son's Scooby Doo night light
He crawled out of bed, and he got down on his knees
He closed his little eyes, folded his little hands
And spoke to God like he was talking to a friend
And I said, "Son, now where'd you learn to pray like that?"
He said, "I've been watching you, dad, ain't that cool?
I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you
And eat all my food, and grow as tall as you are
We like fixing things and holding mama's hand
Yeah, we're just alike, hey, ain't we, dad?
I wanna do everything you do
So I've been watching you."
With tears in my eyes, I wrapped him in a hug
Said, "My little bear is growing up."
He said, "But when I'm big, I'll still know what to do."
"'Cause I've been watching you, dad, ain't that cool?
I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you
And eat all my food, and grow as tall as you are
Then I'll be as strong as Superman
We'll be just alike, hey, won't we, dad?
When I can do everything you do
Cause I've been watching you."

In August, all Lee County Schools will be back in session. The Kick-off Breakfast for J. Glenn Edwards Elementary will be August 15th in McDowell Hall. That will be their first required day back and opening meeting day. They have lost approximately 200 students and 12 staff members to W. B. Wicker. They hated to lose anyone, but are excited to have some “breathing room” this new school year. Some of you have already offered to assist as we prepare decorations and small gift for the staff breakfast. You will be contacted soon. School supplies are important to start the new year off. Principal Natalie tells me that they always have quite a few children that do no have any school supplies. The following is a list of basic supplies that are always needed: Clipboards Folders Notebooks Crayons Glue Sticks Pencils Erasers Kid Scissors Sticky Notes Expo Markers Lysol Wipes Tissues A container will be in the Mission Depot for your Back to School Supplies. Items collected through August 15th will be given to the school at the Kick-off Breakfast. We will continue to collect school supplies through the end of August. Thank you for sharing your time and gifts with J G Edwards Elementary School. Blessings, Sandy Brown Mission & Outreach
