As is not uncommon in most parts of North America, the township of North Glengarry, ON, struggled with wastewa-

ter system overcapacity. The situation had been known for some time, but it was after the region was slammed with a 50-year rain event—during which 6 to 8 inches of rain fell in one hour—that the township knew it had to act.

Infl ow and infi ltration (I/I) through leaky manholes wasn’t the only reason for severe fl ooding and sewer backups—especially in light of the intensity of the storm combined with 60-year-old infrastructure—but it was

a signifi cant factor. So when North Glengarry water works manager Dean McDonald discovered the Lifespan System, he knew he found something valuable.

The Lifespan System is a rubber manhole frame with a locking cover system, manufactured and distrib-uted by Hamilton Kent. In addition to absorbing impact and vibration from traffi c, which in turn reduces the concussive load on the surrounding asphalt and the underlying concrete structure, Lifespan is also completely water-tight. It prevents sewer surcharge up to 3 psi and rainwater infl ow

up to 13 psi. For municipalities, that means not having to convey and treat rainwater in their sanitary sewer sys-tems—another challenge that North Glengarry was facing.

The township of North Glen-garry decided to pilot eight units for immediate installation. The fi rst four Lifespan units were installed in on-road locations. The others were designated for off-road use near a very active creek, which was decidedly critical for controlling I/I. The creek

often overfl ows, and the town-ship didn’t want the extraneous water adding to its overcapacity problems. It also didn’t want sewer overfl ows to contaminate

the creek and affect its wildlife. McDonald has reported impres-

sive results and “zero issues,” with the installations, and he has since ordered more units. “Lifespan is one of a kind,” he adds. “I’d never heard of frames built out of rubber, but they are working great—they held up really well last winter.”

As an added benefi t, McDonald appreciates the ease with which the lightweight Lifespan System was installed, as well as the ease of reinstalling the covers after they are opened up and inspected. This is especially true of the covers now available in composite mate-rial, weighing signifi cantly less than the cast-iron model used by North Glengarry.

“We’re conducting manhole inspections across town, so every manhole cover will be opened,” he explains. “The operators are cursing the old-style covers that we were using before the Lifespan Systems. They are almost impossible to rein-stall properly, whether you’re trying to line up the bolt holes or trying to keep the gaskets in place.”

Rehabilitating manholes is one of many layers of North Glengarry’s infrastructure plan, but it is not a small one. By eliminating I/I at these access points alone, the residents will save money they would otherwise spent on treating extraneous water at the plant and cleaning up after overfl ows.

As Henry Flattery of Hamilton Kent notes, “It takes 1,000 kWh to treat

a million gallons of wastewater. If up to 50% of what you are treating is rainwater, the positive impact on our resources and environment by elimi-nating extraneous water from sanitary systems is staggering.”

As infrastructure repair and replace-ment becomes more of a continent-wide issue, municipalities will need to keep an eye on what lies beneath. Underground infrastructure, sewers, and manhole access—though out of

sight and often out of mind—continue to be a lynchpin for improving the safety, energy-effi ciency, and, increas-ingly, disaster resiliency of our communities.
