Dear Friends:

It has been an exciting and joyous summer as hundreds of SCNs and Associates gathered at Nazareth for the General Assembly. Every five years we come together as a Congregation to reflect on the ways we have lived our Directives during the preceding five years and to create a vision and plan for the future. There were many grace-filled moments during the Assembly days, and the following pages highlight some of them. A new Vision Statement was created and Directives for the next five years were drafted. A new Central Leadership Team has been elected and these faith-filled women will guide us into the future.

With the new leadership team set to take office, I look back on the last five years with feelings of deep gratitude to God for the support our team has felt while we have been in leadership. It has been a blessed time in which we have been privileged to participate in moments that will forever stand out in the history of our Congregation. We have seen the merger of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity into the SCN Congregation, the bifurcation of the Eastern Province as it expanded from one Province into two, and we have taken part in dozens of Bicentennial Celebrations around the globe as the Congregation officially turned 200. We have welcomed new Sisters to our Congregation and said goodbye to many of our women of wisdom as they entered eternal life.

SCNs walked together in an effort to understand and respond with integrity to all that was asked of us in the Apostolic Visitation and the Doctrinal Assessment of LCWR. We are filled with gratitude for the deepened sense of unity among us and the increased solidarity among congregations in the United Stated and Conferences of Religious throughout the world. We continue to experience an unanticipated outpouring of support from laity both in this country and around the world.

On the horizon, the Office of Congregational Advancement is introducing new initiatives and partnering with others since choosing to bring our Nazareth Picnic to a close. We are embracing three new efforts – a Super Raffle, the Bridges and Beyond Open House in Pittsburgh and Join the Journey Luncheon in Louisville – in order to further connect with members of the SCN family and to find new ways to support our ministries.

As we move into this time of newness, we are ever grateful for the support and prayers we receive from each of you. As always, we promise our prayers for you and your intentions.

May God’s abundant blessings be with each of you now and into the future!

This is a pivotal time in the history of the Congregation as new leadership is installed and the Congregation embraces new Directives. These key decisions took place during the Congregation’s General Assembly in June. Over two weeks, a number of profound presentations were shared with those gathered and those participating via webcast. Among them was the keynote address by SCN President Mary Elizabeth Miller. She noted the challenging and exciting times in which we live and how it calls us to minister in new and innovative ways. Below are excerpts from Sister Mary Elizabeth’s remarks.

As this, our 25th General Assembly gathering opens, I want to set my address in an historical context. Our bicentennial celebrations across the Congregation have left me, and I believe that I can speak for all of us, with feelings of awe, admiration, respect and tremendous gratitude to God and to the women on whose shoulders we stand today! The voice of our history is both spirited and heartening!

The very circumstances in which this General Assembly is opening are truly propitious. We, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, are on the threshold of a new era, the third century of our existence! God, in all graciousness, has been part of our past, directing our efforts and wisely arranging everything for our good. We recognize it, experience it, and have a tremendous sense of being loved by God. Since our historic General Assembly in 2008, in Bangalore, India, our Sisters from Pittsburgh, in a great leap of faith, risked new beginnings and became SCNs. Our Eastern Province Sisters completed their discernment and opted to move into two Provinces. As we gather today, we are indeed a NEW Congregation that is very much alive and exploring new pathways in initial formation and in the witness of our lives. We are blessed by the wisdom of so many and the energy of those who continue to follow Catherine Spalding in living the call of the Gospel…

…An oft repeated quote from Catherine, “Our Community must be the center from which all our good works must emanate. . .” highlights the importance of community life. The Constitutions make clear that “Our life in community is rooted in the mystery of our one faith and call in Jesus Christ, the center of our love for one another and for all to whom we are sent.” And, “Our unity

develops through mutual acceptance, trust and willingness to be reconciled.” (Constitutions, p. 21, #39, 41) As a community, we, though different, come together in unity, and there is a merging of our individual stories, without losing them, into a larger story. The heart of our Community, then, is the mystical dimension that binds us to Christ, a mystical vision that emerges from a faithful and diligent contemplation of the Gospel.

Religious life today — with its diminishment through aging and fewer vocations — has taken on a new perspective for our world! At one time we offered so much service through institutional and diverse forms of ministry. Today, as we continue some of these ministries, we offer something deeper — we offer spirituality for which society, with all its brokenness, hungers in tangible ways. In addition, the witness that the world looks for from religious life today is evidence of people, who can find in our many differences, a graced unity of love focused on a shared vision.

Throughout her remarks, Sister Mary Elizabeth would pause to pose questions, among them: How can we live the commission given us by Jesus? What would it mean for us to truly take to heart all that we say we want in regard to a deeper relationship with God and community, and put this into practice? What is it that God wants to say to us as we listen during this General Assembly?

Sister Mary Elizabeth further reflected:

… The faithful presence of the Spirit sustains and guides us daily, and often surprises us to take new directions in ministry that we have never before imagined. We are faced blatantly with issues and questions of trafficking, immigration, terrorism, tremendous advances in technology and the explosion of social media. We are faced with the desperate need to care for the earth, and to respond to enormous suffering because of poverty, human rights violations, racism, casteism, sexism and much more. We are called in unreserved faith, and given the energy for greater collaboration and networking. Together, we move forward, knowing ourselves to be the Beloved of God, who have been given the privilege, in our day, of helping to bring all people and things into the oneness of God.

… As we look into the future, discern where God is calling us as women religious, and more importantly, as daughters of Catherine, we are invited to read the signs of our times and embrace the global reality which challenges us to larger perspectives of international and diverse membership. We are uncertain today about where the future will lead us, but what we can be certain about is that we shall stand together in the changes that our mission and life present. In addition, as a Congregation, we need to truly understand that these changes will invite us to discern and develop new paradigms of living the Gospel, our charism and our Mission Statement across the world with renewed passion. These new paradigms will mean further innovations in our formation programs and creative ways of using our diminishing energy and membership.

Also during the General Assembly, the following Vision Statement was affirmed: We will promote the dignity and equality of women and oppressed people in Church and in society. Delegates approved four Directives as well:

Deepen our spirituality through contemplation, dialogue and theological development across cultures and from different perspectives.

Create vibrant community life and deepen relationships to further the mission.

Promote the leadership and equality of all in the Church, especially women, through education, dialogue, networking, advocacy and the use of inclusive language.

Focus on bringing about systemic change as we are present to people in all aspects of our mission.

The General Assembly culminated in the election of SCNs Susan Gatz as president, Sangeeta Ayithamattam, as first vice president and Brenda Gonzales as second vice president. The new team was officially installed in August.

Painting UnveiledOne of the memorable moments of the General Assembly, was the unveiling of a new painting depicting the first election to ever take place in the Congregation — the election of Catherine Spalding in the year 1812 as the first Mother Superior. The stunning painting by Pittsburgh artist Bob Connell was unveiled just minutes before the process got underway for those Sisters accepting the call to discern for leadership.From left to right, the painting depicts Sarah (Sally) Sims, Mary (Polly) Beaven, Betsey Wells, Harriet Gardiner, Teresa Carrico, and Catherine Spalding. Bob shares that the positioning of the six was done with the following rationale, “Catherine’s head is intended to be the focal point and is positioned to be on the Golden Mean (the center of the quandrant). Teresa Carrico is beside her as they were united in their lives. Betsey Wells stands alone because she is not in harmony with the election of Mother Catherine.” Bob went on to share that symbolically, the rock Catherine is sitting on is faith, as is the tree trunk, and the sky is cloudless to represent the serenity necessary for meditation.

A Night with the AuthorsThe newest books in the series Impelled by the Love of Christ, Volumes 3 and 4, which cover the years 1936–1948 and 1948–1960 were released during the General Assembly. SCNs Elaine McCarron, Rachel Willett, and Patricia Kelley (now deceased) wrote Volume 3 and SCNs Mary Ellen Doyle and Maria Vincent Brocato completed Volume 4. As part of the General Assembly, SCN family members were invited to an evening with the authors and a book signing. Members of the publishing committee, SCNs Mary Serra Goethals, Margaret Rodericks, Susan Gatz, Maureen Coughlin, and Mary Medley Bonn, have also worked very diligently on this book series.

193 YEARS OF MINISTRYIt was standing room only, as hundreds of people filled St. Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro, Ky., in April to celebrate the Congregation’s bicentennial.

SCNs have been in the Diocese of Owensboro for 193 years. Eula Johnson, SCN, who ministers and lives in Western Kentucky, helped organize the bicentennial celebration, “We’ve been a part of the Diocese for a long time. It means a lot to us.”

The Sisters first extended their ministries to Western Kentucky in 1820. In addition to founding St. Vincent Academy in Union County, SCNs established a number of Western Kentucky ministries including St. Frances Academy, which became Owensboro Catholic High School in 1951, St. Stephen, Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and others.

Dozens of Sisters and Associates took a bus from the Nazareth Motherhouse to Owensboro to attend the celebration. Among the highlights of the celebration — a guest appearance by Mother Catherine Spalding as portrayed by Rita Davis, SCN, the sharing of a video about current missions, and the presentation of posters created by a number of Western Kentucky students that brought to life various SCN missions. Many of the Sisters who have taught in Western Kentucky schools were particularly touched by the procession of posters and all the work that went into creating the displays. Many former students also came to the event in order to reunite with the Sisters who once taught them.

Sister Eula shares how SCNs have carried out Mother Catherine’s vision — that of responding during times of need. From founding schools, to nursing soldiers during the Civil War and World War I, to responding to epidemics, to empowering women, Sister Eula reflects, “Her vision was for us to always respond to the most pressing needs of the day.”

The Congregation has been moved by the many bicentennial celebrations that have taken place around the world over the last year. The year of bicentennial celebrations officially came to a close in June on the last day of the General Assembly.

A new measure went into effect in June designed to protect Kentucky’s most vulnerable citizens. House Bill 3 recently passed the Kentucky State Senate. The Bill will help victims of human trafficking with victim assistance funding, will protect victims from prosecution, and will stiffen penalties for perpetrators. Experts working to bring an end to human trafficking say this is likely the most comprehensive piece of legislation on this issue in the United States. Kentucky State Senator Jimmy Higdon personally thanked the efforts of the SCNs and other women religious in helping to pass this legislation, “I would like to commend the Sisters of Loretto, the Sisters of Charity in Bardstown, and the Dominican Sisters of Springfield for their hard work and dedication on this issue. This is a perfect example of how constituent calls and participation in the process helps move good legislation forward.”

An estimated 20.9 million men, women and children are trafficked for commercial sex or forced labor around the world today (www.polarisproject.org). The Sisters have identified human trafficking as a pressing issue in our world. In 2008, a corporate stance opposing human trafficking was adopted. It reads in part, “We, Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Family, stand in support of human rights by firmly opposing trafficking of all persons, especially of women and children, for purposes of sexual exploitation and forced labor.” Around the world, Sisters steadfastly minister on issues related to human trafficking. In some ministries, Sisters work closely with victims by rescuing them and providing safety, shelter and empowerment programs.

In the Western Province, an initiative is underway to raise awareness that human trafficking is an issue that affects all civic communities. SCNs and lay staff are part of a Human Trafficking Task Force: Nelson County and have been active in helping the taskforce take shape and thrive. Task force members include representatives from the fields of social service, law, law enforcement, education, advocacy, religion and health care. Currently, Task Force members have given presentations before a number of groups and have received a $25,000 Violence Prevention grant from Catholic Health Initiatives to support the work.

Sisters and Associates also took part in a vigil this May in downtown Louisville, Ky., to bring awareness to the issue of human trafficking, especially during sporting events, like that of the Kentucky Derby. Sisters and Associates joined in prayer and held up signs to bring attention to the plight of victims.

Through direct service, advocacy efforts, education and networking, SCNs are taking a strong stand against human trafficking.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING


It was a dream come true for Malini Manjoly, SCN, who has always wanted to visit the United Nations. Recently she traveled to New York and had the opportunity to tour the organization. She also met with United Nations Non-Governmental Organization (UN-NGO) Representative, Caroljean Willie, SC, to touch base regarding communication needs when SCNs present before UN committees. Sister Caroljean represents the Charity Federation of which the SCNs are a member.

According to their website, the United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security. It has four main purposes, to keep peace throughout the world; to develop friendly relations among nations; to help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms; and to be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals. The organization works on a broad range of fundamental issues, from sustainable development, environment and refugee protection, disaster relief, counter terrorism, disarmament and non-proliferation to promoting democracy, human rights, gender equality, governance, economic and social development and international health, clearing land mines, expanding food production, and more.

The mood at the UN was noticeably somber the two days Sister Malini visited, as the flags were at half-mast because UN peacekeepers had been wounded and killed in Somalia. Security was tight.

Sister Malini was able to tour a number of areas of the United Nations including the Security Council Room. She found the exhibits to be powerful and noted the commonalities and shared goals of both SCN ministries and UN programs when it comes to improving the lives of economically challenged people and empowering women and children. “Just to be in the UN Security Council room brought memories of all those nations where there is no peace and the many security personnel from developing nations who are in the forefront of the combat line. I said a silent prayer for world peace. The true mission of the UN itself is all that the SCNs try to accomplish in our missions in small and big ways. I myself have participated in the UN Millennium Development Goals by rescuing two children from abuses and abandonment and working with education, health, nutrition, hygiene and empowerment programs for women and teenage girls in the foothills of the Himalayas and among the Ho Tribals for 10 years. I felt a profound sense that I am part of the whole world, and I have

a great responsibility to make this world a better place to live,” shares Sister Malini.

Since 2008, the Charity Federation UN-NGO Representative has offered Sisters of the member Congregations the opportunity to attend UN Commission meetings and internships. Most recently, SCNs Lilly Thomas and Beverly Hoffman interned with Sister Caroljean. They participated in the Civil Society Forum and the

United Nations Commission for Social Development. Sister Lilly carried the flag of India at the Interfaith Harmony Week Service at the UN General Assembly and Sister Beverly participated in an interfaith prayer service at the UN Church Center. SCNs Roselyn Karakattu, Aisha Kavalakattu, Manisha Azhakathu, Ann Moyalan, Leena Padam, Basanti Besra, Anjana Kunnath, and Beena Chirackal have also been part of UN programs. Sisters have given presentations about their ministries and how SCN efforts are helping to make the Millennium Development Goals a reality. Members of the former Central Leadership Team and SCNs Brenda Gonzales, Gracy Mlakuzhyil, Clare McNeil, Dorothy MacDougall, Rose Ann Howard and Mary Serra Goethals have participated in UN orientation opportunities as well.

The Congregation also sponsored travel to the Eastern Province for Sister Caroljean so she could experience SCN ministries there. While in India, she gave presentations about the United Nations, global concerns, and systemic change. Sister Caroljean expressed words of thanks for all the ways SCNs are ministering and for the presentations Sisters have shared before the UN. Sister Malini expressed words of thanks for being able to go to the United Nations and to meet with Sister Caroljean, “Though I have heard about the experiences of the Sisters who have been at the UN and studied elaborately about the origin, objectives and functions of the UN, everything made more sense following our tour and meeting.”

Gathered from all around the world, SCNs Grace Binita Tuti, Jayanti Marandi, Kitamai Catherine Sinku, Manisha Bara, Olive Ekka, Sheela Barla, Sushila Telra and Tarcisia Hembrom made their perpetual vows during a Eucharist celebration in Mokama, India in May.

The parents of the Sisters processed with their daughters to the altar with the rhythm of a beautiful entrance dance by the temporary professed Sisters. Each

family carried decorated baskets full of offertory gifts containing fruits, rice, incense sticks, candles, flowers, Mass wine and hosts.

The main celebrant, the Archbishop of Patna, Most Rev. William D’ Souza, SJ, encouraged the Sisters to quench their thirst by receiving the Word of God as the living water, Holy Spirit. He added, “Have hunger and thirst to serve God and people in the church.”

Family members, priests, novices, members of the Mokama parish community and over 70 SCNs were present for the Mass and the lunch that followed. Carlette Gentle, SCN, who was visiting India from Belize participated in the celebration. Sister Carlette was with these Sisters in Goa for some time and made a one month retreat with them in preparation for her perpetual vows which she made in August.

Jackulin Jesu, SCN, is quick to share that she feels privileged to care for the sick and the needy at Kurji Holy Family Hospital (KHFH) in Patna, India, where she is the Administrator. “To see the smile on the face of a mother as she hears the cry of her new-born baby is the most joyful experience of my life at KHFH where death is also a daily reality,” says Sister Jackulin.

Consoling and strengthening the hearts of those who have lost a dear one is her greatest challenge Sister Jackulin reflects. One day, Sister Jackulin was dealing with the family of a 35-year-old woman who had lost her life to leukemia. The woman was a sitting judge of a nearby town, with two children, the youngest one just a year old. The bereaved family had to find an answer for the sudden death of this young mother within a span of four days. The woman came into the hospital with rashes, took a turn for the worse, and passed away the day she was diagnosed. As Sister Jackulin relayed this heartbreaking situation, she questioned, “How do I console the family and pacify them? I have no ready-made answers, I wish I had them.”

“The companionship and the intimacy with Jesus I experience in my prayer, gives me the inner strength to face such situations daily with courage, faith and hope in the Risen Lord,” says Sister Jackulin. “Healing ministry is a mixture of joy and pain. We would like to see everyone who comes here returning home fully well. But such a wish is utopian,” reflects Sister Jackulin.

Today partnership is the watchword in many organizations points out Sister Jackulin. The partnership of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth with the Medical Mission Sisters (MMS) is a great experience of learning and a life-giving relationship for her. She notes that the routine challenges of teaming up and working together to keep the mission of Jesus above personal agendas and preferences keep her humble. Yet, whatever

the challenges, being in partnership at KHFH is exciting for her she says, and she is always looking forward to proactive enterprises.

The SCNs have been in partnership with the MMS for 13 years. Sister Jackulin became the hospital administrator in June 2012. KHFH is a 300-bed hospital, established in 1939 by Mother (Dr.) Anna Dengel, the founder of the MMS Congregation. Daily the hospital ministers to an average of 280 inpatients and 600 outpatients. A committed faculty of residents, consultants and visiting doctors together with 180 nurses and 200 plus nursing students, and medical and other support staff provide a healing atmosphere at this institution. KHFH received the accreditation certificate from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for adhering to its quality standards in March.

“The SCN family is my home. Needless to say, it is this family which sustains me and continues to provide me with strength and fortitude. Our togetherness, in spite of differences, even strong differences, has its uniqueness of lifting the soul,” says Sister Jackulin. She completed her undergraduate studies in Nursing at Spalding University, Louisville, Ky., in 1994 and Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital Management from Indian Institute of Health Management and Research from Jaipur, India in 2000.

Sister Jackulin has had her challenges but says she has emerged strong because of the life-giving gifts received from different persons and events. “Because of God’s grace and the given opportunities I feel blessed to be what I am today. I owe all to my God, my own family, the SCN family and the lovely family of friends, partners, collaborators, patients, students and well wishers,” says Sister Jackulin. She adds, “I believe in the golden words of Dag Hammarskjold, ‘What you are is God’s gift to you and what you become is your gift to Him.’”

LEAP INTO FAITH

After more than 20 years of ministry in Belize, Paschal Maria Fernicola, SCN, has returned to Nazareth, Ky. She glows when she talks about her time in Belize. At a farewell gathering, residents of the village of Las Flores told her, “Many people come to help us. You came to love us.” While Sister Paschal says that the residents were referring to all those associated with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, it is clear that love for the people of Belize was at the core of her ministry.

Sister Paschal arrived to minister in San Ignacio, Cayo in 1988. After a short stay there, she was called to San Antonio, Toledo where she worked for many years. Many of the people there remember Sister Paschal with great fondness. She would occasionally meet people from San Antonio as she traveled throughout the country; these were joyful reunions. Among her achievements, Sister Paschal helped the Mayan women sell their crafts and established the Mayan Education Fund which has helped many to attain an education. She also worked with women’s groups and was instrumental in getting corn grinders set up in the villages.

From there she went to Independence and served in 13 villages in the south Stann Creek District. She became involved as a supporter of the rights for persons working in the banana industry and advocated for better housing and working conditions. She provided literacy training and tutored women of all ages so that they would have a better life as a result of an education. On Nov. 12, 1997, Sister Paschal was awarded a citation from Help for Progress in recognition of her work for the betterment of the people there. Sister Paschal has also supported and trained lay ministers and teachers of Belize wherever she ministered. She loves the young women of Belize and worked tirelessly to invite them to consider vocations to religious life; she also assisted in the development of SCN Associates in the country.

In January 2001, Sister Paschal returned to the U.S. to care for her ill mother. Returning to Belize remained a dream for her, and

in 2006, Sister Paschal went back to Belize. She spent time in Belmopan and then moved to the village of Las Flores.

There she helped to create a local SCN community with Sisters Rosemarie Kirwan and Carlette Gentle. For seven years she has worked with the SCN community to build a leadership group in the village. The group continues to identify needs and finds innovative ways to develop their village. She has also been a resource as she guided volunteers coming from the U.S. to help with projects

in the village, serving with a loving smile and optimistic outlook. Her fluency in Spanish was exactly what was

needed in Las Flores where the people lovingly call her “Sister Paschalita.”

Sister Paschal cherishes the families of Belize, “The people are warm,

graciously hospitable and very generous with their time and talents even in their struggles for survival, growth and development. They know how to celebrate and enjoy life.” She adds, “All the activities that I have done

these 20 plus years are about affirming people, helping them realize their own dignity and potential for directing their lives and futures.”

You Came to Love Us


RETURN TO BELIZE

It has been 37 years since Judy Raley, SCN, first arrived in Belize and 13 years since her last visit. Memories washed over her as she recently made her way back to that country to reconnect with dear friends.

My heart was filled with joy, gratitude and dreams when the plane touched down in Belize on Feb. 12. What struck me were the many changes, many of them brought about by tourism. There were more people, houses, hotels, and vehicles. And traffic jams unheard of years ago. Familiar sights had new looks. What was unchanged though was the friendliness and gracious hospitality of the people.

In the village of Las Flores, I visited with SCNs Paschal Fernicola and Brenda Gonzales, and SCN Associates Phil and Carletta Fortwengler who were volunteering there for two months. Las Flores was carved from the rainforest near the capital of Belmopan a number of years ago by refugees primarily from El Salvador. The people brought with them a faith deepened by suffering and have continued to nurture it in Las Flores. Since 2006, SCNs have engaged in ministries to assist the people in starting over in a new land. There is now a well-equipped preschool, library, park and a women’s sewing group to name a few. Some of the villagers also have a better house because of the

SCN Lay Mission Volunteer Program. Paschal’s ministry of presence to the many villagers who came to the door each day is inspiring and their love and appreciation of her is evident.

Although SCNs are no longer physically present in this village,

we have left footprints on the land and heartprints on the people and they on us.

Language was no barrier to hospitality when we joined some of the villagers for a picnic by the Sibun River. When arriving at the site the adults quickly built fires to roast chicken on a spit and cook tortillas and soup. No barbecue grill needed here! In the meantime, we enjoyed the refreshing waters of the Sibun River with the children. We were graced again by the joyful spirit of sharing when the main catechists of the village, Valentine and Margareto, and some members of their family, brought supper for us as a farewell to Carletta and Phil Fortwengler.

In Belize City, I had the opportunity to learn of Sister Barbara Flores’ ministry as General Manager of the Catholic Schools, Sister Maggie Cooper’s ministry with the Limex Program and in Catechetics and Sister Chris Kunze’s ministry with children with HIV and AIDS.

John Loretto Mueller, SCN, traveled back in time this spring — if just for a few days.

She was transported by attending a reunion of St. Mary’s Academy former students. Sister John Loretto was the resident advisor for the boarding students who came from parts of Central and South America in the 1970s to attend the Academy in Leonardtown, Md.

The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth opened St. Mary’s Academy in 1885. The growing population of St. Mary’s County and Southern Maryland led to the need to build a larger school building in 1936 and to expand again in 1956. But eventually, with a diminishing number of boarders and vocational candidates, St. Mary’s closed its dormitory to operate solely as a Catholic high school. In the late 1970s, the all-girls academy, St. Mary’s, merged with the all-boys academy Ryken High School. St. Mary’s Ryken continues to flourish.

A number of SCNs trace their roots to St. Mary’s. Many Sisters attended the Academy and many SCNs taught there. When the class of ‘71 and ‘72 held a reunion in Panama, a location central to them, they connected with Sister John Loretto and asked her to join them. The former students, who describe Sister John Loretto as their “Mother away from home,” say they loved spending time with her.

A Trip Back in Time

It is hard to describe the joy and anticipation in my heart as the bus neared San Ignacio where I was in ministry from 1978 until 1984. What a surprise waited us when we arrived at the beautiful new tourist welcome center complete with a fountain! As we visited Sacred Heart Church which has been renovated, I recalled the blessings of my years there and asked that God continue to be with the people whose lives had touched mine.

Attending the Stations of the Cross at Santa Elena led by Mrs. Louise Lewis, who was one of the first Lay Ministers for Sacred Heart Parish, evidenced the fruit of the Lay Ministry Program. Her children and grandchildren assisted her with the Stations. The highlight of my visit to San Ignacio was the gathering of some 30 lay ministers held in the yard of Mrs. Louise’s house. We enjoyed sharing stories and a delicious barbeque meal including a cake with “Welcome Sister Judy” on it. Mrs. Teody Ruiz is the oldest minister and still very engaged at age 90. She had a picture of the two of us on her veranda in 1980. I was truly inspired by the continued commitment and deep faith of these special people. Delilah Alice Cabb, SCN Associate, shared the impact the Ministers Program had on her when she was only 10 years old. Her parents, David and Inez Cabb from Santa Familia Village, were in the program and Inez was nursing a baby at the time. Alice came along to care for her brother and sat outside the meeting room listening. What she heard made an impression and guided her to become a minister later on.

The March 10 Liturgy celebrating the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the Pallottine Sisters in Belize was an experience of the Church of Belize, with people coming from all the districts to the campus of St. Joseph Church, Belize City. The Pallottines and SCNs have the same motto: “The love of Christ impels us.” These words

were my lived experience of the gracious hospitality of the Pallottine Sisters in San Ignacio with whom I stayed during my first visit to Belize in 1976. When I returned in 1978 to become a member of the Pastoral Ministry Team for Sacred Heart Parish, Pallottine Sisters Josella Flowers and Stephen Franco were members of the team. What a gift they were to me in learning Belizean culture. Being with them for this celebration was a special gift.

I left Belize with a heart full of new memories and deep gratitude. There is a saying in Belize, “Drink the water you’ll surely come back.” I drank the water again and I continue to hold the people of this sacred place in my heart and in my prayers. They have touched my life by their hospitality, faith and commitment and my faith and commitment is strengthened because they have walked the path with me.

Sarah Geier, SCN, grew up in a large family. To hear her share the stories and to see the pictures of family get-togethers, and sometimes, family sorrows, one knows that this family is very loving and very close to one another. Her brother, Bob Geier, recently wrote a reflection about his big sister entitled “My sister, the Sister.” Bob lives in Silver Spring, Md., with his wife Kathy. Sister Sarah calls Pittsburgh, Pa., home where she is a coordinator at St. Louise Convent.

Sister Sarah Marie Geier, the second of 10 children, was born in Pittsburgh, on Oct. 12, 1943 to William and Virginia. She has eight brothers and one sister. “Sally,” as she was known to family and friends, seemed to have had tireless energy in whatever she did. Her heart-filled love of life was demonstrated in many ways but most of all in her exceptional quality of kindness and compassion that she shared with everyone.

In a large family everyone learns to be responsible to each other and to the entire family. We all had “chores” around the house, yard, and in helping with the younger children. We all delivered newspapers, we were all raised to do things to help our neighbors.

She had a calling to serve God and entered the community of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity (now the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth) as a Postulant on Sept. 8, 1960. The joke was that she just wanted to have her own bed! Oh, how we missed her.

A year later, Aug. 15, 1961, she got her white veil. When she became a Novice, it was tough since we were not permitted to see her for 12 months.

Sometimes there were comments and puzzled looks when friends and family heard the news that Sally would be a nun. Nuns were rare creatures to some, full of mystique. As youngsters, we knew they were nuns but had no idea that they were women too! Reactions included everything from “How wonderful” to “Do I have to be extra good around her?”

It made me feel as if I had a closer channel to God. As needed, I

would sometimes use her status to my advantage with the other kids: “Don’t mess with me, my sister is a Nun!”

Throughout her 53 years of religious life, she has been a teacher, a nurse, and a missionary. She lived in Peru and for a brief time in Haiti. She has received many awards. Whatever she did she did with gusto and she will say that she did not always succeed but she always tried. Her specialness is what lies within.

She has never been afraid of challenge or risk, including the challenge of having cancer. When chemo no longer worked and a stem cell transplant was needed, all of her siblings offered to be tested. One by one they reported that they were not a good match.

When I was tested I called to tell her that I was not a good match…but that I was a perfect match. (My siblings

still tease me about being PB, the “perfect brother.”) I was happy to be there to give new hope and new

life, something any of my brothers and sister would have also done.

Sister Sarah, my sister, has always been an inspiration to me, our family and so very

many others.

I never “lost” a sister to the convent, for she made it possible for me and our family to gain an entire community of “Sisters.” She continues to follow her

heart in sharing “The Love of God” with all! How very blessed are the many that have shared her smile as she travels through life.

The world is truly a better place because of her.

Thank You, Sally! May joy continue to shine through your untiring love and unending efforts as you spread the teachings of Jesus!

“Every person that I have heard from about this recognition shares amazing stories about her and all that she does for others”…words recently used to describe Mary Judith Seman, SCN. Sister Mary Judith was honored during the “Hats off to Mom” event at Sisters Place, an opportunity to recognize women that are moms, are like moms and/or make large service contributions to the community. Melissa Ferraro, the director of development for Sisters Place, says she believes Sister Mary Judith epitomizes the last category.

Melissa writes that Sister Mary Judith was one of the original founders of Sisters Place. Sisters Place, Inc., was founded in 1993 by a group of 14 Catholic religious communities. These women chose to provide housing and supportive services to struggling single mothers and their children. Because of the Mon Valley area’s acute need for such programming, the members selected Clairton, Pa., as the home of Sisters Place.

The founders believed it was important that Sisters Place residents be part of a larger community, and so after aggressive fundraising, they purchased 16 apartments within the 450-unit Century Townhomes complex. Religious communities continue to support Sisters Place in countless ways. Currently 32 families receive services at Sisters Place.

During the recognition ceremony, it was shared that Sister Mary Judith, along with the Ladies of Charity of the Parish were involved in furnishing and decorating one of the apartments selected to house one of the early families. Today, this same group continues to support Sisters Place with various projects for the children.

Melissa went on to note that for the past 25 years, Sister Mary Judith has devoted her life to caring for others. She ministers to the sick, the elderly, and to people in need both in the parish and the community.

Sister Mary Judith served as Mother Superior of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity (now part of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth) for eight years. For many years, Sister Judith was involved in education. She taught first grade in several Pittsburgh Catholic schools including St. Michael’s in Braddock and St. Sebastian’s in Ross Township. After earning her M.A. at Duquesne University as a reading specialist, Sister served as a consultant for Diocesan Schools.

“Throughout her life, Sister Judith has experienced God’s love for her. This love fills her heart and spirit each day bringing joy and peace to all who meet her,” adds Melissa.

Sister Mary Judith currently ministers as the parish social minister at St. Thomas A Beckett Parish in Jefferson Hills, Pa.

Forever Loved As A TeacherA Maryland school with ties to the SCNs, is paying tribute to two of the women that taught there. Their names now adorn the doors of two classrooms. SCNs Mary (Cabrini) Reisz and Dorothy (Mary Albert) Gerlica are well-loved by former students and though it has been some years since they taught at St. John’s, they are anything but forgotten.

How the two came to have their names on classroom doors can be traced to a snowstorm. After a heavy snow fell in February 2010, the roof of St. John’s School in Hollywood collapsed. The school was comprised of the original 1920s section and a 1950s addition. The insurance covered the “rebuild” of the collapsed 1950s section of the school, which included the basement. School officials felt it made sense to renovate the 1920s section at the same time the rebuild was being tackled, as it would result in both sections meeting the same high quality, building code, and technical standards.

A capital campaign — “Out of Adversity Comes Opportunity” — was undertaken with a goal of $500,000. The Campaign raised $726,064, which covered the $644,857 in actual renovation costs and also covered additional items ($81,207) for the school.

As part of the school’s fundraising efforts, a phone-a-thon was held as well as a “Name A Room Competition.” The competition was based on recognizing the top 14 donors over $10,000. Top donors were able to choose the door of their choice and dedicate the door to a specific individual, family, business, sister, priest, or saint. Two SCNs were recognized, SCNs Mary (Cabrini) and Dorothy. Sister Mary’s name has been placed on the eighth grade room door. She taught at St. John’s from 1948–1959. The donor noted “… in recognition of the Sisters of Charity who taught at St. John’s for so many years, and especially Sister Mary who touched so many people during her 10 1/2 years …” Sister Dorothy’s name was placed on the second grade room door. She was principal at St. John’s from 1980–1987. The donor shared, “We remember how Sister Dorothy was tough but fair, and always looked out for our son, and we know she had a huge impact on his life.”

SCNs are grateful for this honor as it demonstrates the impact of the SCN presence on the school, the students, the parish, and Catholic education. St. John’s would like to especially recognize and thank all of the SCNs who have given to St. John’s School in so many varied ways. Adding, they are blessed to have enjoyed the direction and guidance of the SCNs from 1923–1988.

Rocking for ResidentsA Rollicking SuccessHundreds of sponsors, volunteers and residents enjoyed a fun-filled, festive day when Vincentian Collaborative System in Pittsburgh, Pa., held its second annual Rocking for Residents event in June. Across Allegheny County at all three communities, Vincentian Home in the North Hills, Marian Manor in the South Hills and Vincentian de Marillac in the East End of the city, rockers took to their rocking chairs to raise funds so that Vincentian Home and Vincentian de Marillac could purchase flat-screen televisions for residents. Marian Manor raised funds to purchase therapeutic blanket warmer chests and blankets.

Using a format similar to a walk-a-thon, individuals secured pledges for each 15 minutes spent rocking in a rocking chair. “Rocking for Residents is truly one of the best days of the entire year for our residents and members of their families,” says Raymond E. Washburn, president and chief executive officer of Vincentian Collaborative System. “The day’s activities mean plenty of smiles, laughter and memories for our residents while at the same time raising much-needed funds to purchase extras not included in our standard operating budgets.” The “rock-a-thon” raised more than $60,000.

On April 15, 2013, people around the world watched in horror as bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Three people were killed and more than 260 were injured. The event turned from a joyous celebration into a scene of utter chaos as complete strangers responded to the injured around them and police evacuated the area. Millions watched helpless from their TVs at home or in the office. Among them, SCNs at Nazareth, Ky., many of whom have ties to Massachusetts. Phone calls and emails were quickly exchanged to check on loved ones, as others gathered to pray.

Many SCNs joined the Congregation from Brockton, Newburyport, and South Boston and nearly three dozen Sisters continue to live and minister in that area. In the hours and days that followed, Maureen Taaffe, SCN, was on lock down in her apartment, Tess Browne, SCN, joined in a prayer vigil/march and SCN Barbara Gilmetti had to try to figure out how to talk to her fifth grade students about what had happened. Her students would go on to write notes of thanks to each member of the Boston Police Department. Our Sisters joined in prayer with others in Boston and around the country. Sisters Ann Whittaker and Anne Marie O’Shea wrote the following in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon:

On Thursday, April 18, we went into Holy Cross Cathedral to join thousands of people who gathered for a city-wide interfaith service to pray for healing and peace after the terror in our beloved City of Boston. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle had come to comfort and to offer support to all of us. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, and other civic officials gathered with the people in tender care and compassion. Diverse representatives from many religious traditions joined in unity and strength to renew our belief in the Divine Presence who dwells with us in the midst of terror. We were at the end of the line which formed and stretched all around a neighborhood park waiting for admittance to the Cathedral or to the overflow space in the school gym. The atmosphere was friendly, kind, and caring. When we got a block from the Cathedral, we were informed that there was no more space. The event coordinators were helpful and considerate to the crowd gathered. All around us we heard, “That’s ok. We understand there is not enough room for us. We just want to be here in support and loving care for all those who have been harmed and to pray for peace and healing.” This response was beautiful!

On Saturday, April 20, we visited the makeshift memorial on Boylston Street, Boston — a site close to the bombing. On our way,

we strolled through the Boston Public Gardens which were bursting with new springtime life — buds on trees, flowers opening, people walking in peace. Upon reaching the memorial, the atmosphere became still and silent. Folks were praying, kneeling, weeping, hugging one another. We met a woman and her daughter from Brookline. The mother said, “We just had to come to pay our respects. What else would we do today?” As we wept together, the little girl moved forward to take a photo for her dad. We moved back to give her access. When they left, she came over and gave us a hug, saying, “It was good to meet you.” We lay flowers from our backyard and a string of Tibetan Prayer Flags as a sign of honor and reverence from our SCN Community. Great kindness and goodness have emerged from terrible violence and terror. The light surely is overcoming the darkness.

Martha Walsh, SCN, reflected on her experience:

An emotional moment for me occurred as I stood alone with a man on nearby Marina Bay wharf, the morning the president and first lady Michelle came. The second terrorist was still at large. The sky was eerily empty for 10 minutes. Then two white planes descended very low, followed by the president’s plane, slowly gliding so close I could see the flag on it. As I waved, the plane continued low over the Kennedy Library. My thoughts turned to that memorial and how the same plane carried J.F.K.’s body, years ago. I prayed for the safety of this plane, shed some tears and gained strength, knowing hope is stronger than fear as the Cathedral Services demonstrated. After the plane reached the Kennedy Center, the seagulls here sang loudly, a true Boston welcome!

For decades SCNs have lived and ministered in neighborhoods across Boston. Over the years the SCN presence in schools has included Immaculate Conception School, St. Patrick School, Most Precious Blood School, St. Catherine School, St. Brigid School, Nazareth High School, St. Anne School, St. Margaret School, Our Lady of Nazareth, Archbishop Williams High School, St. Edward School, St. Pius X School, and St. Thomas More School. The SCN presence in social services has included St. Peter Orphanage, St. Theresa Home, Catholic Charities, the D Street Project, and Brockton House. And our involvement in pastoral services have included the Cardinal Cushing Hospital, Eastern Point Retreat House, and the Adult Literacy Program. SCNs have also been involved in many other ministries. In this tragedy, members of the SCN family have looked for ways to be a healing presence. As a Congregation, we pray for all touched and recovering from the Boston Bombing.

New Ways to be Part of SCN MinistriesThe Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are introducing three exciting new ways to join with the Congregation in support of ongoing ministries.Super Raffle: A Super Raffle is being held, with a grand prize of $20,000, second prize of $5,000 and third prize of $1,000. Only 3,500 tickets will be sold. The cost of a ticket is $20. The drawing will be held on Sept. 27 at 1:00 p.m. Specifics of the raffle will be available on the SCN website at www.scnfamily.org. If all tickets are sold, our net proceeds will be approximately the same as has been raised each year at the Nazareth Picnic. This raffle should be a fun way to raise support, and we can only imagine the excitement as the winning names are drawn!

“Bridges and Beyond” Open House at St. Louise Convent in Pittsburgh, Pa.: Family members, friends and others are invited to attend an Open House at St. Louise Convent in Pittsburgh on Sept. 15, 2013, from 2–4 p.m. Our hope is to share the breadth of SCN ministries with interested persons and learn how others would like to be part of the SCN family. A short program will begin at 2:15 p.m. in Vincent Hall Auditorium, followed by a social in the Dining Room. We look forward to reconnecting with many people and getting to know new friends. “The SCN family grows every time we connect with people in this way,” explains Patsy O’Toole, Director of Congregational Advancement. The day before this event, SCNs will have a booth at McCandless Days in Pittsburgh.

“Join the Journey” luncheon in Louisville, Ky.: The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth will host a luncheon in Louisville on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013 from 12–1 p.m. at The Olmsted. During this one-hour luncheon we will present a heartwarming program that highlights SCN ministries and the impact that these ministries have had in the lives of individuals. There is no cost to attend the luncheon, but participants will be asked for a donation. There is no minimum and no maximum donation amount expected. Each of these initiatives offers an opportunity for greater involvement with people who share the values of this Congregation and want to be part of the ministries into the future. We are excited to see how these initiatives unfold. As is true from the beginning of the Congregation, SCN ministries are possible because of the support of so many people and we are filled with gratitude!

Nazareth Mahila Samiti Training Centre in India on March 21 to celebrate International Women’s Day.

4 The SCN Lay Mission Volunteer Program held a three-day volunteer

event in April at the Doors to Hope ministry office, Holy Name Church, Louisville, Ky. This project took place in conjunction with Mayor Greg Fischer’s annual “Give A Day” Week.

5 SCN Associate, Dr. Vie Thorgren, has been chosen, along with 11 other

women, as one of “Colorado’s women of influence for 2012.” Founder and executive director of the Center for Spirituality at Work, the organization behind the Making Choices program at the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility, Vie’s program reduced the recidivism rate among Colorado women, saving the state $1.2 million in 2012.

6 A Nelson County, Ky., resident had a once in a lifetime Derby Experience

and supported SCN ministries in the process. Shannon Donahue of New Haven, Ky., won a pair of tickets in the grandstands for the Derby. The SCN Volunteer Program raffled off the tickets to raise $2,300 for supplies used in rebuilding communities.

7 Sharon Gray, SCN, and three Lay Mission Volunteers visited Botswana,

Africa April 5–18 and the villages of Metsimotlhabe, Lobatse, and Kanye. The volunteers led a workshop and a prayer day and assisted with mission sites.

8 In India, Nazareth Hospital Mokama Nurses Alumni met for a reunion on

April 20. Nirmala Mulackal, SCN, reported that they had a wonderful gathering.

9 Luke Boiarski, SCN, along with nine lay mission volunteers traveled to New

Orleans, La., on April 22. They worked in collaboration with the St. Bernard Project as they continue assisting those still in need of home repairs from Hurricane Katrina.

10 The Earth/Arbor Day celebration at Nazareth, Ky., took place April 23, in

St. Vincent Church. The celebration included a prayer service, reception, the planting of a tree, and singing by students of St. Joseph Montessori.

11 Community garden plots were once again shared on the Motherhouse

Campus, Nazareth, Ky. Seventy-two plots were made available. The garden was blessed May 1.

12 SCN President Mary Elizabeth Miller attended the Plenary Assembly of the

Union of International Superiors General in Rome May 3–7, 2013. Over 800 Sisters, who are leaders of their Congregations, attended.

13 Each year Nazareth Academy in Gaya, India has various competitions to

develop each child. Approximately 150 students took part in the Rangoli competition on May 4.

14 Many thanks to SCN family members for their generosity to the Bardstown-

Nelson County Relay for Life which resulted in donations totaling $1,409.50. The Relay for Life event took place May 10 at Bardstown High School, Bardstown, Ky.

15 Nazareth Home in Louisville, Ky., is the first nursing home in the world to

be accepted as an organizational member of the Working Group. Nazareth Home has met the Working Group membership requirements and strives to embody the seven values of the Working Group: compassionate action, effectiveness, connection, wisdom, integrity, responsiveness, and responsibility.

16 Members of the SCN family volunteered for the Festival of Faiths in

May. Among the highlights, SCN Vice President Teresa Kotturan was invited to join six other religious leaders in offering a prayer at the opening ceremony. The theme of this Festival of Faiths was: Sacred Silence — Pathway to Compassion — with the Dalai Lama as a guest.

17 The Members Board of Nazareth Villages announced the appointment

of Vicki Ward as the new president and managing director of Nazareth Villages. Vicki has over 20 years of experience in home health care advocacy for seniors and persons with disabilities, business development and project management.

18 World Environment Day was celebrated at Seelampur, Delhi, India

on June 11. The children, from non-formal education classes, put on a dance drama.

19 Central Leadership and the Western, Bangalore and Patna Province

Leadership Teams attended the Sisters of Charity Federation annual meeting in Leavenworth, Kansas from June 12–16, 2013.

20 SCNs Luke Boiarski, Nancy Gerth, Angela Hicks, and Assistant Director

of the Lay Mission Volunteer Program, Felicia Rowe, carried out mission work in Dunbar, Pa., with 12 students from Archbishop Williams High School, Braintree, Mass. They assisted the elderly and those in need from June 16–21.

21 LCWR Subregion VI members met at Nazareth, Ky., on June 26. The

meetings went well.

Juanita Marie Wiley, SCN, formerly Sister Agnes Charles Wiley, 81, a native of Newport News, Va., died at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky., on Jan. 25, 2013. She was in her 64th year of religious life.Sister Juanita Marie served in elementary, secondary and adult education in Maryland, Kentucky, Louisiana and Virginia as a teacher

She was in her 82nd year of religious life.Sister Ruth Marie served in Kentucky, Virginia, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Tennessee, and Ohio in elementary, secondary and collegiate education for 40 years. Louisville, Ky., Sister served at Presentation Academy from 1953–65. Sister also served as Pastoral Visitor in St. Raphael Parish from 1972–73.Survivors include nieces and nephews, and her religious community.

Ann Leo Wilson, SCN, 96, a native of Fancy Farm, Ky., died at Carrico Hall, Nazareth, Ky., on Feb. 22, 2013. She was in her 78th year of religious life.Sister Ann Leo served in community service and health care in Kentucky and Tennessee and as Local Superior, Dietary Supervisor and LPN for 60 years. Sister served at Our Lady of Peace Hospital as Central Kitchen Supervisor from 1950–65; at Saints Mary and Elizabeth Hospital as Dietary Dept. Supervisor from 1965–66 and in the Sister Visitor Program from 1966–67. Sister Ann Leo served at various facilities as an LPN in health care from 1970–80. She served in community service in SCN facilities in Louisville from 1980–2002.Survivors include a brother, Paul Wilson of Fancy Farm, Ky., nieces and nephews, and her religious community.

Caroline Maria Clarke, SCN, 88, a native of Hollywood, Md., died at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky., on March 3, 2013. She was in her 72nd year of religious life.Sister Caroline Maria served in community service, child care, health care and care of the elderly in Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Survivors include three sisters, Gertrude Norris and Catherine Clarke of Hollywood, Md., and Mary Alwilda Wathen of Leonardtown, Md.; one brother, Edward “Bouncer” Clarke of Hollywood, Md.; and her religious community.

Irene Agnes Benyak, SCN, 84, formerly Sister John Francis, a native of Monessen, Pa., died at St. Louise Convent in Pittsburgh, Pa., on April 5, 2013. She was in her 62nd year of religious life.Sister Irene ministered for 32 years as a teacher in elementary schools in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Pa., and Cape

She then spent 30 years in McKeesport, Pa., where she worked as a pastoral associate and CCD coordinator for the four parishes which were merged into what is now known as Corpus Christi Parish.Survivors include her sister, Mary B.
