Most people might not know the history of Palangkaraya the capital city of Central Kalimantan.

It is known as a man-made city in the heart of Borneo. Sukarno, the first president of Indonesia, initially used this city as a model for the nation’s capital. I was lucky to have an opportunity to visit this beautiful city.

I am amazed by Sukarno’s dream and idea for the nation post the declaration of Independence as written by Wijanarka in a 2006 book, Sukarno and the Indonesian Capital Plan Design in Palangkaraya. Seeing Jakarta’s landscape in colonial design, he then tried to design his own version of the nation’s capital in 1957-1959 in Palangkaraya; from the large and small roundabout, city park, piles, palace, etc.

/

/Several landmarks that he

designed can still be found in the heart of Palangkaraya. One of them is the famous Kahayan River bridge that divides the town into two. The bridge stretches 640 meters with 12 special span for 150 meter along the river shipping channel. The bridge’s European-style construction still looks sturdy even though it was build in 1995.

If we walk around and observe Palangkaraya, it appears that the city already has a design plan before the population resides. It can be seen from the wide roads, the parks and pedestrians side walk on the right and left side of the road, parks between the busy streets, and the roundabouts. In addition, because of its low population number, it is comfortable to live here. Unfortunately, during the night, the city become quite dark. It is ironic to have energy crisis right in the heart of Kalimantan. The lights along the road are not able

should be reserved for the parks so at night beautiful twinkling lights can be seen as people pass through the

to beautify the city. Of course we can tell that it was not part of Sukarno’s dream.

Under the magnificent bridge, if you want to go through the river to see the Lanting house and the Borneo rainforest and all the way through to the home of the Dayak tribe, there is a pier with two types of transportation available: The River Cruise Motor Lasang Teras Garu tour boat that can accommodate 25-60 people and has 5 rooms for 10 people; and the small klotok boat that fit for 3-5 people.

After satisfied relaxing by the river, there is still one more public spot that you must visit, because it is not far from the bridge. About 50 meter below the Kahayan bridge there is

a Soekarno’s monument about the city’s history that once was designed to become the nation’s capital. There you can find the first stone that marks the construction of Palangkaraya. Then for more historical tour, you can continue the journey to Balanga Museum. You can feel the mystical vibe once you enter the museum. It holds various tradional Dayak tribe’s items and some replicas of its traditional ceremony. It is located only about 20 minutes to the west of Palangkaraya. Enjoy the Beautiful City of Sukarno’s dreams!

Aside from the Komodo National Park, West Manggarai district; East Nusa Tenggara province also

had other interesting tourism objects. One of it is the Cunca Rami waterfall. A 70-meter high waterfall is located at Lamung village, Mbeliling subdistrict, West Manggarai district, East Nusa Tenggara province. This waterfall is in Mbeliling forest, a tourism area with its well-preserved natural mountain ecosystem. It can be reached with in 45 minutes form Labuan Bajo city, the capital city of West Manggarai or about 20 Kilometer.

The journey to this beautiful waterfall won’t bore you due to its beautiful natural scenery. The walking path or trekking is started from the village,

through pecan trees forest and the fields. You will pass fertile fields. You will arrive at Cunca Rami after crossing a small clear river. From the distance, the charm of the waterfall surrounded by green lush, can be seen and the roar of Cunca Rami waterfall can be heard. Cunca Rami also has natural pool beneath it, a perfect place for a swim in crystal clear water.

The name of Cunca Rami comes from Flores language, cunca means waterfall and rami means forest. So, Cunca Rami means waterfall in the forest. Aside from enjoying the waterfall trekking at Mbeliling forest also can be a fun way to enjoy this beauty of Flores island.

BALIEM VALLEY FESTIVALA Hurl You Don’t Want to Miss

15 THE JOURNEY AUG 2014 15 THE JOURNEY AUG 2014

The Baliem Valley Festival was first held in 1996 and since then has been established as an annual event by

the Papua Provincial Tourism. It was held in the Village Wasilimo, District Kurulu, Jayawijaya, Papua about 27 km from Wamena, the capital town of the Jayawijaya Regency. More than 30 representatives from various tribe villages from around baliem valley attending and performing their culture. Foreign tourists from all over the world also gather and enjoy the show.

In the past, the tribes who live in the Baliem Valley were known as a warlike society. If there was a problem that occurred between tribes and could not be resolved, then war became final solution. But now as time goes by, that way of life had been left behind, but the war movements were preserved as one of the culture heritage to the community. The war dance is one of the most anticipated event, with scenarios to trigger war such as kidnapping, grazing invasion, infidelity,

and others. Then each tribe formed a group in the middle of the field and they started to battle each other. This tribal war is only apart of attraction so it is safe for everyone.

In these performance visitors also know that these was not just some street brawl style of fight, they have strict laws of war. Some of it are both side are not allowed to deliberately attack or hurt women and children, an incredible war strategy, they have a unique defense and attack system. The performance also pumped up more adrenaline rush with their battle cry, thrusting their arrows and long spears while yelling and chanting vigorously.

This year it was held form 7th August until 9th. Don’t miss it.

A towering water fountain stands amid decorated pools, water flows from one pond to another, carps

meander around beautifully-laid stepping stones, all under the beautiful morning sun and skies. As we enter the grounds of the water garden a pool welcomes us, rimmed by intricately sculpted statues of real and mythological beasts, and dotted with beautiful figures from the Hindu epic of Mahabharata. Meanwhile lush forest, rice paddies and springs surround the man-made garden, enveloping it with peace and serenity.

Tirta Gangga, named after tirta – blessed water – and Gangga – from the holy River Ganges in India, was another brainchild of I Gusti Gede Bagus Jelantik (Anak Agung Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem) who was also responsible for the construction of Taman Ujung Sukasada. Exploiting the abundance of water and picturesque landscape near the village of Ababi in eastern Bali, the last king of Karangasem who was fond of water gardens commissioned the work for Tirta Gangga in 1937. Not only supervising it, the king himself purportedly took part in the hard work, standing in mud digging out earth. It took eleven years for the new water garden to be completed.

Flowing water’s soothing sound has always been believed to help create a state of peaceful mind and body. This was

probably the very same reason for the king to build multi-layered fountains in Tirta Gangga, apart from his penchant for the beauty of nature. Its centerpiece is Nawa Sanga, an 11-storeyed fountain tower at the heart of the water garden’s central pond, encircled by eight statues guarding the eight directions. At its bottom water flows down to a nearby pool often used today by children to swim and play.

Faced by the same wrath of Mount Agung that destroyed Taman Ujung in 1963, Tirta Gangga was then rebuilt many

years later, even though the end result does not quite resemble its past look. New additions to the water garden include the Naga (dragon) bridge and barong statues, still adhering to Balinese and Hindu cultures and values nonetheless.

Today Tirta Gangga remains a peaceful sanctuary, not for Balinese royal families but rather for travelers who seek Bali’s more quiet setting, far from the center of mass tourism industry engulfing the southern part of the island. The locals, however, see Tirta Gangga in a different

way. It provides the water they need for religious ceremonies, crucial to keep the universe in balance according to Balinese Hindu tradition, and keep their village safe from the exalted and unpredictable Mount Agung.

Mesmerizing Indonesian Archipelago

Indonesia is a huge archipelago consisting of thousands of islands that stretch from the westernmost point of Sabang to the easternmost point

of Merauke. From Miangas island the northmost to Rote island the southmost, it spread to more than 17.508 islands with over 1 million km2 making Indonesia a massive sand box to explore. This huge archipelago is endowed with a beauty of diverse cultures and nature with distinctive flora and fauna.

There are eight major islands or island groups in this enormous chain. The largest landmasses consist of Sumatra, Java,

Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes) and Irian Jaya (the western half of Papua New Guinea). The smaller islands fall into two main groups: the Molluccas to the northeast, and the lesser Sunda chain east of Bali. Bali is a unique island, which for a number of reasons can be put into a class of its own.

The favourable condition have attracted a great number of visitors to Indonesia. Visiting Indonesia means seeing and experienceing the unique diverse cultural and astonishing natural beauties that this country has to offer and explore.
