CRICKET : CAPTAINS REPORT On Tuesday, the 30

th of August The Junction Public school

played Valentine Public School in the 5th round of the

PSSA Cricket State Knockout. The Junction won the toss and decided to bat first and lost 3 quick wickets. It resulted in Declan and Angus needing to form a steady partnership to get us back on track. A superb knock of 26 from Declan and some quick singles from David got The Junction to a competitive total of 81 runs. When it was The Junction’s turn to bowl we once again started with a great opening bowling partnership keeping the runs to a limit with Valentine 2/13 after 6 overs. After drinks The Junction really started to create more pressure with some exceptional fielding from Gus and Harry getting run outs. Highlights from our bowling included Jack (2/7), Archie (1/6) and Charlie with 1/6. It was another great team effort with The Junction bowling Valentine out for 55 runs.

WATER POLO PLAYER PAYS YEAR 6 A VISIT Last Monday, three time Australian Olympic Water Polo Player, Richie Campbell surprised Year 6 at TJPS with a visit to their classroom. Richie brought in his 2016 Olympic suit cases, some outfits he wore during the Rio Olympics. Three lucky students were able to try on the outfits which included: Richie’s water polo cap and robe that he wore before each game when listening to the National Anthem, also the blazer he wore on opening ceremony night and lastly the outfit he would wear if he had won a medal. We were than able to ask Richie some questions about his water polo career. One person asked: “When did you start playing water polo?” His response was “I originally was a swimmer until I was about 11; my coach said I should try water polo.” Another asked: “What was your favourite part of the Olympics besides competing?” Richie responded by saying “It would have to be the food at the at the Athletes Village, I really loved the Brazilian Barbeque. There was also a McDonald’s in there!” Afterwards the whole of Year 6 had a photo with Richie ending our time with him. Some of us were lucky enough to grab a photo and an autograph before he left. It was a wonderful opportunity for all of Year 6 to spend time with an Olympian and find out what it takes to achieve your goals and follow your dreams in life. By Alexandra - 6S

STAGE 2 INDYAMARRA CULTURAL GROUP VISIT On Friday, Stage 2 students were given the opportunity to learn about our local Awabakal culture through storytelling and dance sessions. David, Luke and Shannon from the Indyamarra Cultural Group made the sessions engaging, informative and entertaining. David shared the beliefs and ideals of the Aboriginal culture with the children and told the local Awabakal Dreamtime story of how coal was made. Shannon taught the children traditional animal dances, including the emu, kangaroo, brolga and goanna. Luke shared his knowledge of the didgeridoo and demonstrated how to play this traditional instrument. The children also looked at some very interesting artefacts, including traditional tools and weapons. The session concluded with a dance performance, where all the children (and teachers) participated with great enthusiasm. It was a great morning and linked perfectly with our current English and History units. Next term, we will continue our study of the history of Newcastle and the Stage 2 children will participate in a guided walk of Newcastle East. We are looking forward to that. Lisa Hughes

P & C NEWS BETTY ANDERSON AWARD: Nominations are now open for the 2016 Betty Anderson Award. Betty Anderson is a former parent of The Junction Public School who ran our school canteen on a voluntary basis for over 40 years through to about 2009. She continued to help long after her own children had grown up and her grandchildren were attending other local schools. Our canteen is named in her honour. Each year the P&C awards the Betty Anderson Award to recognise significant voluntary contribution to our school community. The aim is to try and identify the "quiet achievers". There are many people who provide quiet and consistent support in ways that we don't always realise, and it's important to find an opportunity to recognise their efforts. All members of our school community are welcome to submit nominations either using our online form here: http://bit.ly/2016BettyAndersonAward or by dropping a note to the P&C’s attention to the office. You may nominate more than one person, but please provide an overview as to why you think they are a worthy nominee. The more supporting information you can provide, the easier it will be for the P&C to assess the nomination. Please include your name and either a contact email or phone number, in case we need to contact you for more information. Nominations for the Betty Anderson Award close at 3 pm Friday 21 October 2016. Financial members of the P&C will vote on the award at the November P&C meeting. The result will be announced at Presentation Day on Thursday 8 Dec 2016 HOLIDAY RAFFLE: We will soon be embarking on this year’s holiday raffle. A huge thanks to Michael Jonker for securing a great range of amazing prizes which will complement the first prize of a $4000 holiday. We also have some wonderful kids incentive prizes on offer too. We are looking to develop a roster of people to help process incoming raffle tickets in Term 4. To enable us to develop a roster which suits the availability of people who are able to help, please complete this short survey if you think you can help with ticket processing http://bit.ly/2016RaffleAvailability More info available at the link regarding what is involved and when. Alternatively, drop us a line at [email protected] to let us know how you can help. ATTENTION CURRENT KINDY PARENTS: It's hard to believe it, but the incoming 2017 kindy cohort are fast approaching their orientation days. We’d love your help in welcoming the 2017 Kindy parents at the first orientation days which will be Monday 31 October, and Wednesday 2 November. Each year we organise morning tea for new parents while their cherubs are off meeting their buddies and enjoying their first orientation day at TJPS. We'd really like the current kindy parents to look after this event.

Closer to the time we will need people to donate cakes / slices and also be there on the day to meet and greet new parents, but right now we're looking for a coordinator or two. The P&C will provide support – so, if you’re interested, please touch base with me at the P&C email on [email protected]. Grab a friend to help you if you’d like – it can be handy to have another person helping you (although there's not too much to pulling this together). Any parents of the school are more than welcome to come along and help out, but we'd really like to make sure we have good representation from the current kindy parents where -possible. FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST THANK YOU Thanks to the hundreds of dads, uncles, granddads and kids who turned up last Thursday for the Father’s Day breakfast. We can’t believe how lucky we got with the weather, and we hope you had a lovely morning. A huge thanks to Kendall Long for again co-ordinating this year’s Father’s Day breakfast. Kendall spends time in the lead up to the event, making sure everything is ordered and organised and ready to go on the day. Thanks, Kendall! Thanks also to our huge army of volunteers. Each and every contribution is greatly appreciated and crucial to the success of the morning. Thanks to Anna Rose, Vanessa Hedges, Jenni Heyes, Olivia Ryan, Karen Bull, Michael Jonker, Leone Cook, Jane Hamson, Sonya McEntee, Kristen Saunders, Karen Howard, Raegan Jackson, Aleena Velich, Tracey Topic, Candie Fong, Aleisha Byrnes, Alli Garrett, Cameron Knight, Megan Noble, and anyone else I may have missed. Thanks also to all of the kids who chipped in and helped out early. Thanks to all of the teachers and school staff who helped out – we can’t do it without you. And lastly, thanks to Kath for being so accommodating in us taking over the canteen for the morning. Julie Wharton, Acting P&C President [email protected]
