aluminum, their selection of bumpers, tonneau covers, bed liners, and tube steps not only look fantastic, they will help protect your truck.Dave Krabbe started DK Custom

Welding in 2005 and the company has steadily grown since then. Bringing in Jake Krabbe as a partner in 2011, the two brothers have over 30 years of welding experience between them. Constantly creating and designing new products has given this Elora-based company a portfolio of work that they can be proud of.

A truly unique experienceCustomer Doug Bird had nothing but

positive things to say about his experience with DK Custom Welding & Design - “Dave and Jake do some amazing work with aluminum. You need anything welded, these guys can do it.”In Doug’s case, the guys at DK started by

designing a custom front bumper. Once he saw what they could do, he added a back bumper, tailgate, tonneau cover and side steps. Being able to customize every aspect of the design meant adding horns, fog lights and a very durable skid plate.

“I hit a very large tree with this bumper and did not damage a thing,” says Doug.

Get out and enjoy Centre Wellington

The sun is shining in Centre Wellington and with summer just around the corner, there’s never

been a better time to get out and enjoy some of the spring and summer events going on in our community.

We received an email from Krista Byers at I Love Chocolate! this month. She says they are a little bit past reaching 20% of their goal for Junior’s Journey (if you haven’t heard about this initiative, visit www.juniorsjourney.ca for more information). Krista would like to thank everyone that has helped out so far. If you have any ideas or would like to start a fundraising event on Junior’s behalf, please email your ideas to [email protected]

Elora Home Hardware and Fergus Home Hardware are Merging! New in the north end of Fergus is VMAX Studio. Owner Alison Ireton invites you discover the world of Whole Body Vibration and how these state-of-the-art machines can help you lose weight and get into shape. Alison says 10 minutes using her machines is equal to 1 hour at the gym. Her studio is located at 855 ST. David Street N. Unit# 5 in Fergus. Call (226) 383-8629 (VMAX).

Also new in Fergus is Sleep Rite which opened last month located beside Zellers. Offering quality mattresses and pillows, owners Marlene and Syed are dedicated to helping find the right fit for their customers and they enjoy educating people about what they offer. Drop by and say hello!

New to the Fergus Market is Wilson’s Fly Fishing. Many Centre Wellington residents will recognize Rob Heal, an avid fisherman who has worked in this area for many years, now manages this store. Wilson’s Fly Fishing has everything you need for a great

day out on the Grand River! miniCAB recently announced it’s

amalgamation with Green Taxi of Fergus. Up to this point, both companies have since been working together to promote and build both of their businesses, and have developed not only a working relationship but a friendship as well. The amalgamated service will commence Monday June 4 as Green Taxi. Green Taxi serves Fergus, Elora, Centre Wellington and all of Wellington County. For additional information about Green Taxi call 519-820-4343 or visit them on the web at www.greentaxifergus.com.

Finally, located just outside Elora is Enchanting Esthetics which opened last month. Try their Lower sodium, gluten-free sausages with decreased sodium - a healthier choice! Or what about The Harvest Table’s Farmer’s Sausage, made without additives, preservatives or fillers. This is truly a pure meat sausage!

Another great choice in the store is their BBQ Kebabs! Your choice of Teriyaki

Family Road Trip in your Future?Have your air conditioning inspected before you

hit the road this summer. Just as the other systems of your car need servicing on a regular basis, the same is true of your car's air conditioning system. Making sure the condenser fins are not restricted with bugs or road debris, and that the compressor drive belt is in good condition, may keep your car and your family from losing their cool on a “hot summer’s day.”

“Some words aren’t said often enough... words like - You are important to this family. You are appreciated for all the thoughtful things you do. And you are loved for being the wonderful dad you are.” source, Hallmark card.

Father’s Day is coming up on Sunday, June 17. Don’t miss this opportunity to remind Dad of how much he means to you. Roxanne’s Reflections has an extensive selection of Father’s Day cards, perfect for all the important men in your life. Cards for dads, for husbands, for grandpas, cards from your son, from your daughter, even from the dog. While you are in picking out the perfect card, why not grab a great book for Dad? There are many great new books, including The Columbus Affair by Steve Berry and Rather Outspoken by Dan Rather. Need suggestions? Just ask one of the staff, we love to make recommendations.

Looking forward to summer, we are very excited that Curious George is coming to visit. Mark Saturday, July 21st on your calendar. Curious George will be here that day so just drop in between 9am to 12pm

or 2pm to 4pm. There will be story time, crafts, face painting, treats, prizes and more. Don’t forget to bring your camera. Curious George loves to have his picture taken. We’re also having an awesome sale on the original Curious George books so take advantage of the savings, too.

In August, Clifford the Big Red Dog is coming to visit. Clifford will be with us on Saturday, August 25th from 9 to 12 and 2 to 4. Once again, we will be reading stories and doing crafts.

Are you thinking about your summer reading yet? Roxanne and Mimi recently read Juliet Naked by Nick Hornby and we both loved it. It is a perfect feel

good, laugh out loud book with a great message about living life to the fullest. Patricia just finished The Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda for her book club and she loved it. It has just been published in a smaller paperback format, perfect for carrying to the beach. Mimi also read Vincent Lam’s new novel, The Headmaster’s Wager, and she really enjoyed it, too.

Roxanne’s Reflections Book & Card Shop is an independently owned bookstore. Need something particular for someone on your shopping list, we would love to order it in for you. Looking for suggested reads, just ask any of the staff. We all love reading. Please come by the store at 152 St. Andrew St. West in historic downtown Fergus, call 519-843-4391 or email [email protected] for more information. Join us on Facebook or subscribe to our free email newsletter. Our Summer business hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 9 – 6, Thursday and Friday 9 – 8, Saturday 9 – 6 and Sunday 11 – 3. Happy Reading from Roxanne, Abby, Kim, Mimi and Patricia!

Hey Centre Wellington residents, Sleep Rite is putting out the welcome

mat this month! Save yourself a drive to Guelph or Waterloo, and shop local at Sleep Rite, instead. It is an independently-owned store, and specializes solely in mattresses and pillows. Syed and Marlene are dedicated to finding the right fit for each and every customer, and enjoy educating people about what they offer.

Sleep on it before youmake a decision

Instead of bombarding you with impersonal sales tactics, Syed and Marlene provide a personal approach to mattress and pillow shopping: they ask you what you are looking for, what your needs are, your sleeping habits, and if you have any aches and pains. From there, they provide you with the two or

three best options. They even encourage their customers to get quotes from other stores, and to ask as many questions as they’d like, instead of pressuring them to make a split-second decision.

Past customers have appreciated Syed and Marlene’s knowledge of their products, and lack of sales gimmicks.

Mattress shopping doesn’t have to be a hassle; at Sleep Rite, picking out a mattress is an individually-focused, relaxing experience.

Top-notch selectionSyed and Marlene choose the

mattresses that they sell based on the reputation, performance, and history of the brand, and stand behind their products. They also sell proper pillows for all different types of sleepers. Whether you sleep on your side or back, there will be a perfect pillow for you at Sleep Rite.

Sleep Rite isn’t just selling mattresses and pillows; it’s selling a good night’s sleep, for every customer. Check out their selection when you drop by this month - they’re located on MacQueen Blvd. in Fergus (in front of Zellers). Call 226-383-1170.

Don’t paint those windows again!Summer’s just around the cor-

ner! And with the warm weath-er already here, it’s a great time

to have work done to your home’s ex-terior. If your eavestroughs, window frames, and siding look like they need some TLC, consider calling Mark Mar-tin Complete Home Exteriors.

Tired of the expensive maintenance costs for the wood trim around your windows? Mark’s company can pro-vide you with new siding that’ll spruce up your home’s exterior, and his staff can cap your windows with aluminum to protect your windows’ exterior from that harsh Canadian weather.

Aluminum window capping is a cus-tom-bent piece of aluminum, which covers your window frame. It is more durable and water-resistant, and won’t

chip or fade as easily in the sunlight. And according to many of Mark’s cus-tomers, having your windows capped with aluminum eliminates the need to replace them if they’re exhibiting wear and tear.

Forget about your eavestroughs! If you’ve climbed a ladder to clean out

an eavestrough, you know it’s a tedious task — and, worse yet, dangerous. You could have someone do it for you, but do you really want that extra yearly ex-pense?

Mark Martin has the answer, with the Gutter Clean System. This patented leaf guard system prevents leaves, debris, ice, and snow from building up in your eavestroughs. Give Mark a call, and say goodbye to eavestrough upkeep and leaning costs. Don’t forget to ask about the 25-year warranty!

HOW IT WORKSVmax whole body vibration machines

combine the benefits of an exercise machine and a massager all into one unit. Vmax is a vibrating machine that allows the user to train and develop muscle strength, tone and reduce cellulite, while increasing growth hormone, and reducing stress.WBV machines have also been shown,

in several hundred peer-reviewed studies, to decrease the stress hormone in the body (cortisol) and increase beneficial chemicals such as serotonin. On Vmax vibration machines, you

can exercise from a standing or sitting posture (thereby working either the entire body or isolating the buttocks, thighs, calves, and abdominal). The intensity of vibration is determined by the parameters of frequency, amplitude, and magnitude, commonly referred to as the ‘G’ force. The Vmax vibration machines work by

generating vibrations on the base plate. This vibrating force is then transferred directly throughout the entire body. All the affected muscles respond with a rapid stretch-reflex; an automatic response by the muscles in which the tissues contract and relax. This has been shown by heightened electromyogram (EMG) activity. Due to this subconscious

contraction of the muscles, many more muscle fibres are used than in a conscious voluntary movement. Low speed vibrations mainly relax and refresh the body; yet higher speed vibrations can cause rapid and intense muscle contractions.

IMPROVED CIRCULATIONAnother important effect of whole

body vibration is an improvement of blood circulation throughout the body. The rapid contraction and relaxation of the muscles at rate of up to 60 times/second increases the speed of blood flow throughout the body. This causes “vasodilation”, a healthy widening of the blood vessels.Vmax vibration machines also are

used in the prevention or treatment of common diseases, such as osteoporosis and fibromyalgia.Because Vmax whole body vibration

machines are so flexible in their adaptations, they can be ideal for older, difficult-to-train, or people with other disorders. In addition to increasing muscular power, Vmax’s multiple models also enhance postural control and balance, key issues for many in this group.“10 minutes using our machines = 1

hour at the gym,” says Alison.Contact VMAX FITNESS for details -

Are You As Healthy As You’re Suppose To Be?

Dr. BJ Palmer one of the founders of chiropractic coined the phrase “above-

down, inside-out (ADIO)” to describe the inner workings of the brain and spinal cord, connected to all parts of the body, cells, tissues and organs making up each one of us.

The brain (above) is the center of this principle. Nerve signals being transmitted by the brain travel ‘down’ the spinal cord. From the spinal cord the nerve impulse travels along spinal nerves (inside), which exit from between the bones of your spine. These spinal nerves then run (out) to and operate all systems of the body eg: the circulatory respiratory systems, etc. As long as there is a free flow of information or nerve impulses from the brain through the spinal cord to the body, the health of body and its systems should function optimally.

What happens however when this changes and an accident, fall, repeated trauma, poor posture or other incidents affects the spine. This very same nerve impulse from the brain, which gives life to the organs system and all other

functions of the body, is now altered. There is a decrease in the signal getting to the body and thus over time the body or parts of it can start to malfunction or break down which could eventually lead to pain or other symptoms.

How chiropractic fits into this ADIO principle is actually quite simple. Locate the bones of the spine causing the interference on the spinal cord and by gentle chiropractic adjustments correct the interference. Chiropractic care restores the free flow of information between your brain and the rest of your body. When your body’s systems receive accurate information – on time and in the right sequences – they can do the job they were designed to do. The result is dynamic, vibrant, fully expressed health and well being. So the question that you need to ask yourself is: “Are you as healthy as you are suppose to and want to be?” Find out how chiropractic can

get you on the road to better health.www.fergusfamilychiropractic.ca

Every year around this time our clients, many people that either read this article or our roadside

sign, call with their retirement questions. The most popular question being “how much will I need to retire?” The answer is of course that there are many ways of reasonably predicting your retirement in-come. Everyone should be taking a fews hours

out of their busy schedules to plan for this MAJOR event. This is one of most perfect times as you’ve likely just re-ceived your Notice of Assesssment from Revenue Canada. If you have a pension at work, then you

will likely have a pension statement and you will probably have your March 30th investments statements. This is likely all you need to have a BASIC plan complet-ed. We can help you with this and once that is completed, then we start to cus-tomize your plan to suit your needs.Once we have all your financial docu-

ments, we use our financial software programs. We then pair this up with our investment software. Once all the data is compiled, then we can order a number of different reports that will be helpful for you to understand what your obligation will be to yourself so that you can have the type of retirement life that you are dreaming of.This software is very useful and not just

for retirement plans. We use this software in many applications... 1) Young parents who are trying to plan

for their children’s education.2) Teens who want to invest their money

they earn at their first job. 3) Young graduates who need to plan

to pay off their loans and get started on saving.4) 30 year olds who are looking at the

purchase of a home and/or starting a fam-ily.5) 45 year olds who may finally have the

kids graduated and they can start to focus on themselves regarding investing.6) 55 year olds who are staring straight

in the face of retirement and are hopeful-ly comfortable financially or would like some assistance. Then there are the NEW retirees that

just want the reassurance that all will be fine and that they can/will have enough income to live off for the rest of their lives. The first part to preparing a plan is really

up to you. It’s a scary thought of allowing

someone else to look at your financial in-formation and you can be assured that we always treat our clients with the utmost respect and we will work hard to make sure you’re in good shape BUT we need you to help us! After the first meeting, the follow-up

second and perhaps the third meeting, we will review your plan annually to make sure nothing has changed in your circum-stances. This will give you the assurance

that your on the right track. So what’s it cost? Call us at (519) 843-

5110 for an explanation of how we get paid and we will provide full and com-plete disclosure of what is involved with our organization. Ecclestone Financial is located at 245 St. David Street N. or visit us at www.efginc.ca We look forward to helping those who

HOW IT WORKSParticipants from last year’s Drop

Zone enjoyed a group weekly personal training session and sessions with a wellness coach who helped them improve their eating habits and make sound choices in food selections. Are you “Fit to Walk”?Factors affecting the effectiveness of orthoses

Foot orthoses are used for treatment of temporary and chronic lower limb conditions. The effectiveness

of orthoses may depend on several factors:1) Semi-rigid vs. soft: Functional orthoses controlling foot movement are usually semi-rigid. Soft orthoses are generally accommodative.2) Fit and design: the casting and manufacturing technique must be appropriate to the condition3) Proper Footwear: are the orthoses mated with the proper shoes?4)The ability of your body to adapt and respond to changes.5) Cease activities that aggravate your condition.6) How often do you wear your orthoses? Orthoses may not be as effective if wornonly occasionally.

7) Wearing orthoses with worn out shoes: worn out footwear may cause problems with alignment and stability.8) Adjustments and Follow-up: Orthosesand Footwear will have to be checked

periodically for proper alignment. If your current orthoses are no longer

effective, or if you have been thinking about whether they may help your present condition, we may be able to offer answers to your questions. We have an on-site lab so that we can quickly respond to your needs.

Call your local Certified Canadian Pedorthist (C.Ped.C.) at 519 843-7979 for a no-charge, no obligation evaluation. This includes a bio mechanical assessment, gait and footwear analysis and a query and explanation of the bio mechanical conditions found that may be responsible for your condition. Our profession is regulated through the College of Pedorthics.

We are located at 135 St.David St. in “The Olde Livery” building in Fergus.

BOB WITTE

Did you know that 1 in 6 children have a vision problem that requires correction? Parents are

often unaware that their child’s vision is abnormal because children rarely complain of vision problems and usually they assume that everyone else sees just like them. Also, one eye often compensates for the other and so a vision issue may go undetected.

Although a child will often not complain, signs and symptoms that your child may have a vision problem include frequent headaches, difficulty focusing at distance or near, a short attention span, underperformance at school, skipping lines while reading, sitting too close to the television or closing one eye while reading. Also look for red, itchy or watery eyes. Children with a white pupil should be brought in for immediate evaluation due to the possibility of Coats’ disease or retinoblastoma- a rare but potentially deadly ocular tumor.

Two conditions that are particularly common among children are crossed-eyes (strabismus) or lazy eye (amblyopia). These conditions, if caught early, can be properly treated with spectacles, muscle therapy or surgery. In fact it is important to diagnose and treat these conditions as early as possible since there is a limited window of development for the visual portion of the brain. If caught too late a “lazy eye” cannot be corrected which can result in reduced depth perception and even career limitations. Additional eye problems that affect a child’s

ability to see are near-sightedness and far-sightedness. These conditions can be easily treated with spectacles or if appropriate, contact lenses.

Eye exams are critical for children because the world is visual and children need proper eyesight for everything from learning at school to participating in sports. A full exam ensures that a child has good visual acuity, correct eye muscle alignment, proper focusing and fixating, as well as appropriate

colour vision and depth perception. A colour vision defect may exclude your child from certain careers. Depth perception is necessary to experience 3D movies and also contributes to sports performance. Parents are often unaware that visual testing can be performed even before the child is verbal or before they know their alphabet.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends eye examinations at 6 months, 2 years and 4 years of age. Routine examinations should then occur yearly, even if no vision correction is required. The Ontario Health insurance Plan (OHIP) will cover the cost of a yearly eye exam for children 19 and under with a valid health card.

Schedule an examination with your optometrist today.

Appointments are available for children or the entire family at Quarry Optometry Centre. 294 Mill St. Elora. Book now: 226-384-2020.

Why is an eye examination for children so important?

DAD....called Papa in our house but when our kids are talking to someone else they use “my

Dad”. It’s a good example of the mixing of cultures that happens every day at our place. Regardless, every Dad’s special day is coming up on Sunday June 17. Buying a thoughtful gift for MOM is a WHOLE LOT easier than for DAD somehow. So, we thought we’d try and point out a few things in I Love Chocolate! & I Love That Gift! that might be the perfect gift for your Dad!

Dads are often King of the Grill, so let’s head over to the BBQ section and see what’s new! Last year it was the Gourmet Village BBQ brie baker & Fire Wire, and this year the BBQ accessories from Gourmet Village has exploded for those that like to expand their BBQ cooking to more than flipping burgers. How about a Stainless Steel BBQ wok that comes with Stir Fry Seasoning $39.99. Check out the round 13” Cast Iron Griddle...great for making BBQ pizza, chicken, or burgers. It comes with two “handle mitts” and seasoning for a pizza $49.99. We also have a Cast Iron Skillet including a Panini press, which is great for Panini, steaks, burgers, grilled veggies $49.99 including seasoning. How about the pottery style Flame Proof Beer Can Chicken Roaster $39.99 that even has room to add veggies around the chicken. Includes a packet of seasoning...and a truck load of flavour! You can exchange beer for apple juice.

If Dad enjoys the relaxing in your backyard space, what about a Fire Pot for him? It is a pot that holds a can of Fire Gel. You light it and it crackles like a real wood. Creates the relaxing ambiance of a fire and can be used indoors or outside. Fire Pots start at $39.99, Reg. Or Citronella Fire Gel $7.99.

Check out the Metal Art in I Love That Gift!. It is made out of nuts & bolts and small pieces of metal all welded together to make really neat stuff perfect for a Dad! From mini band sets, drummers, and guitar players, to motorcycles, fishermen, & Rocker Dude wine bottler holders there is quite a selection starting at $15.99.

One of the best gifts to tug at Dad’s heartstrings is one of our message frames that are specific to Dad’s Papas & Grandpas...even Family or Grandkids frames are nice...and you put your own

photo in it. Reasonably priced at $7.99 & up.

If Dad has a sweet tooth...don’t forget about all the decadent goodies in I Love Chocolate!. How about our Fudge Special...Buy 1 lb and get ½ lb FREE for $15.99! Choose up to 6 flavours of Fresh Fudge to make up this combo! Special offered when packaged in 1 box or bag. Peanut Brittle was made for guys...according to our unofficial in store statistics. Aquamaster Water Softener saves on operating expenses

Thanks to everyone who dropped by our booth at the Fergus Home Show, this year

was a great success. As I have written in the past, most softeners operate the same way, on the demand principle. What makes one softener different from another is the amount of water and salt used during the regeneration of the soft-ener.

The Aquamaster Water Softener saves operating expenses by using up to 50% less salt and up to 80% less water per re-generation than conventional softeners. Aquamaster softeners are the only ap-pliance with a separate, built-in, whole-

house, self-cleaning dirt and sediment filter. Aquamaster Softeners also oper-ates on 12-volts while other softeners use at least 24 volts.

Aquamaster can regenerate in as little as 15 minutes while conventional soft-eners can take nearly two hours. Aqua-master Softeners have a packed resin bed and allows for reserve capacity. This reserve also allows the Aquamaster Softener to regenerate with clean, soft water.

So when it’s time to replace your soft-ener give us a call @ 519-846-9090 or drop by the store @ 195 Geddes St in Elora.

Don’t forget that Simon is a licensed plumber and gas fitter.

Long Term Care Insurance - It Makes Sense

No one likes to think about it. No one wants to talk to others about it. But we all may reach

a point when we aren’t able to take care of ourselves and need long term care such as nursing care, personal care and homemaking services. If you or someone you know has cared for a loved one during a time of need, you know the toll it can take on their time, which is why it is important to plan for your own long term health care needs. While many people believe that our universal health care plans fully cover long term care, our government programs aren’t as comprehensive as we think, and we have to pay out of our own pocket for many of these needs.

The costs for long term care, whether you stay at home, are in a private-care facility or a government subsidized facility can be high. The total cost of nursing care can add up, into the thousands of dollars. If you or your spouse were to require long term care assistance, at home or in a facility, how would you pay for it?

Would you use your savings or retirement income? Would you use the equity in your home? Would you maybe depend on your family? How would the other spouse survive if all of the money was spent on one spouse’s accommodation?

If you have a hard time answering these questions, I can help. A great way to fund long term care needs, and protect your savings is through long-term care insurance. Insurers can offer protection

for a fraction of the cost of care that you would personally have to pay for if you did not have insurance.

Don’t wait until you’re retired to look at the benefits of long-term care insurance, it’s not only for retirees. The younger you are when you apply for coverage, the lower the premium and the better your chances of being insurable. You’ll also have coverage for early claims that could occur as a result of accidental injury or illness.

Many people don’t realize that the need for long term care can strike at any time. Statistics show that 40% of people receiving long term care services are working age adults, between the ages of 18 and 64. Would you be prepared for long term care, if you suddenly required it?

Please contact me by phone at 519-265-5126 or send me an e-mail at [email protected] and we can discuss Long Term Care Insurance in more detail.

If you’re in the market for a hot tub, here are some points to consider before you buy...

1. It should be built in Ontario for optimum quality and energy efficiency in our northern climate. 2. Signs of hearing lossFor many, hearing loss happens

as the result of getting older. A gradual decline in the ability

to hear goes unnoticed; it is usually identified by family, friends, or a routine Hearing exam. The first step is to recognize the signs of hearing loss. If you think you have a hearing impairment, ask yourself these questions: • Do you often ask others to repeat what they say?• Do friends and family express concern about your hearing?• Does background noise often make conversations difficult?• Do others find the TV or radio is turned up too loud?If you are experiencing any of the

above issues, contact Brian Ward at Ward Hearing Centre in Fergus for a comfortable and complete hearing assessment (no referral necessary).

“It’s always important to have a hearing test on file for future reference,” says Brian. “Hearing loss is one of the most commonly ignored health issues.”

Sometimes excessive wax is the culprit for your reduced ability to hear. Brian will check for that first and remove earwax if necessary. Other causes are ear infections, genetic medical conditions, illness, traumatic injury or exposure to excessive noise.

Brian says living with hearing loss isn’t like listening to sounds with the volume turned down. Instead, you may notice that some sounds are heard with no difficulty while other sounds like ‘f’, ‘sh’, and ‘th’ are far more difficult to hear, especially in a loud environment. Many people say, “I can hear that someone is talking, but I just can’t make out what it is they’re

saying”.In many cases, hearing loss can lead

to social and psychological problems including breakdown of communication (often with a spouse or a family member), social isolation, difficulties with employment, depression, frustration, and reduced self-esteem. The good news is that hearing loss and its many psychological effects are very manageable with the correct action.

Whatever your hearing and maintenance needs are, you can rest assured knowing that the caring, professional service at Ward Hearing Centre will treat you first rate with only your best interests in mind.

For more information, call (519) 843- 4327. Ward Hearing Centre is located in Unit #2, 135 St. David St. S. (inside the Old Livery Building) in downtown Fergus.

Free parking is available at the back of the Old Livery across from the Brew House.

Get clean, clear drinking waterDo you find yourself wondering

why your water is cloudy? According to Greg Montgomery

from Watermatters in Fergus, there are a number of man-made factors that contribute to cloudy tap water. To avoid drinking murky water, or serving it to a guest, Greg recommends Kinetico’s Whole Home Water Treatment products so you and your family can enjoy clean, clear drinking water.

Why does my water havefunny tastes or odours?

In its natural state, water is colourless, tasteless, and odourless. If your water smells or tastes funny, Greg says it’s all about where your water is coming from. The common chemicals used in water

treatment, like chlorine or chloramine, as well as natural minerals and bacteria, and m a n - m a d e contamination, may be playing a role in the taste and smell of your water. If your water has a rotten egg smell or a earthy or metallic taste, a

Kinetico system can remove the sources of these annoyances and you can enjoy clean,

fresh water again.K5 Drinking Water Station

Kinetico’s K5 Drinking Water Station uses several stages of filtration, including reverse osmosis technology, to get rid of any impurities in your water. Currently it’s the most advanced drinking water system available, with unparalleled features. Contact Greg to find out why so many people are buying this state-of-the-art drinking water system.

To learn more about the Kinetico difference and how Watermatters can improve the quality of your life, call 519-843-4753 or visit the store at 180 St. Andrew St. West behind Fergus Fireplace.

Stay Sun-Safe this SummerHere are the best ways to protect your

family’s health while having fun in the summer sun from Shoppers Drug

Mart in Elora.AVOID PEAK-HOUR SUN

The sun is brightest between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., so limit exposure during these times, especially for children. Also, stick to shaded areas, avoid over-exertion and stay hydrated when outdoors by drinking plenty of cold water.

ALWAYS USE SUNSCREENAlways wear adequate sunscreen—even in

the shade. Choose sunscreen with a minimum Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15. Make sure it offers “broad-spectrum protection” against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply it every two hours, or right after swimming, toweling off or sweating. (Yes, even waterproof formulas.) Babies should always stay in the shade, but sunscreen can be used on babies as

young as six months, provided it’s limited to small areas such as hands and cheeks.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUNGLASSESSome cosmetic sunglasses don’t protect

against sun exposure. Look for a sticker stating your sunglasses offer UVA and UVB protection.

COPING WITH SUNBURNContact a doctor if your baby gets sunburned,

or your child experiences a burn causing blistering, pain or fever. Remember to...

• Keep your child hydrated with water and juice.• Soothe burns with cool baths and wet compresses.• Reduce pain with children’s acetominophen.• Avoid lotions or creams unless your doctor instructs you to use a specific product.• Keep your child out of the sun until the burn has healed. For more information, visit your HealthWatch

pharmacist at Shoppers Drug Mart in Elora, located at 89 Geddes St. Call (519) 846-5379.

Start Planning Now for 2012 Taxes

By now most of us have filed our 2011 tax returns and are just getting over how much we pay

in taxes. Unfortunately the problem with taxes is that by the time they are due, it’s usually too late to make any significant changes or find opportunities for savings.

If you feel you paid too much in tax for 2011 then it’s up to you to start planning now to ensure it does not happen again. A few things to consider would be:• take a look at how your debt is

structured. Any interest you pay on a car loan or other personal loan must be paid with after tax dollars, but interest paid on a loan taken out for investment or business purposes can be completely tax deductible• make maximum use of registered

investment savings plans. If you and your spouse have unused RRSP contribution room take a look at who should be doing the contribution to maximize tax savings. If you are also trying to save for the children’s education through an RESP

consider an extra RRSP contribution instead with the increased tax savings going into the RESP• income splitting, consider if there is any

way income can be shifted between you and your spouse or other family members to maximize use of lower tax brackets• The tax free savings accounts (TFSA)

are into their fourth year and anyone 18

years or older has $20,000 of contribution room. If you paid tax on interest or dividends in 2011 and have not maximized your contribution then it’s an easy way to save some tax for 2012. • If you are an incorporated business

owner now would be a good time to think outside the box. Ask yourself if salary and RRSP contributions are the best way to achieve your financial goals or would the use of dividends and a corporate investment account leave you better off now and in the future.A few steps taken now could make next

year’s tax filing more enjoyable.
