2016 – 2017 ANNUAL REPORT {2}

The Junior League has evolved into one of the oldest,

largest and most effective women’s volunteer organizations in

the world, encompassing 150,000 women in 291 leagues in

four countries. The Junior League of Houston consists of

more than 5,000 members, representing generations of women

“Building A Better Community.”

The Junior League of Houston is a modern organization

comprised of women with a breadth of skills, professional

experiences and personal stories. We are united by our interest

in building well-being in the community and the League is

structured to provide our members with training and education

to both maximize their contributions to our mission and make

meaningful change in their communities, workplaces, homes

and the lives of others. League members serve on numerous

boards and coalitions as well as lead a variety of business, civic

and nonprofit organizations.

In 2016 – 2017, active and provisional Junior League

members gave more than 135,000 hours of service and

contributed over $725,000 in direct financial support to

the Greater Houston Area. The important work of the

Junior League of Houston would not be possible without

the commitment of our

volunteers and the support

of community organizations, our Tea Room patron members,

donors and Community Partners.

I am so proud of the work members have put forth this year

to bring about change in our community and the undertaking

to evolve how we engage and train our members and evaluate

our contributions and commitments.

I invite you to see the ways in which the Junior League of

Houston has developed civic leaders through collaborations to

identify the most urgent needs in our community and address

them through an impactful and relevant Community Program

and other volunteer initiatives.

SHANNON BEIRNE WIESEDEPPE President 2016 – 2017

SINCE 1925, THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF HOUSTON HAS BEEN COMMITTED TO PROMOTING VOLUNTARISM, DEVELOPING THE POTENTIAL OF WOMEN, AND IMPROVING COMMUNITIES THROUGH THE EFFECTIVE ACTION AND LEADERSHIP OF TRAINED VOLUNTEERS.

THE ASSOCIATION OF JUNIOR LEAGUES INTERNATIONAL, INC. The Junior League of Houston, Inc. (JLH) is a network of empowered female civic leaders working with community partners to address and solve pressing issues like basic needs, abuse of women and children, health care, education and cultural enrichment. JLH is part of The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI), an international network of 291 Leagues comprised of over 150,000 women in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Great Britain, engaged in similar work in their own communities. AJLI is a nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive consultation, training and other support services that assist the leadership of the 292 Junior Leagues across four continents. The association provides a unique and powerful depth of knowledge and resourcefulness to bring about the changes its member Leagues strive to accomplish. Besides volunteer members being able to transfer their membership to other Leagues in the AJLI family, being a member of AJLI also affords Junior League members valuable learning opportunities and available resources such as conferences, online training sessions and a website rich with reference materials.

THE ARBOR SCHOOL provides an intensive educational program with 2:1 or 1:1 student/teacher ratio for children with all forms of developmental disabilities, birth through age 12. League funds of $20,000 supported the school’s scholarship assistance program to double its impact.

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL offers assistance with basic needs to families in times of crisis through its At-Risk Youth Project’s emergency assistance program, providing timely and effective monetary assistance to families in need, in cases where families would otherwise fall through the holes of our social safety net. League funds of $20,000 provided funding for the At-Risk Youth Project.

THE HEART PROGRAM provides independence for individuals through innovative education, training, housing and employment programs. League funds of $20,000 provided funding towards The HEART Program’s summer internship program which provides scholarships and services for low-income youth who have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

HAVE SHEARS WILL TRAVEL serves those with special needs that restrict their ability to obtain hair care services due to physical impairment, lack of transportation or financial means. League funds of $7,800 for the purchase of hair care products, tools and styling implements allowed the program to double the monthly clientele served from 300 to 600.

THE MISSION OF YAHWEH is piloting their Workforce Integration Now Program in partnership with Houston Community College System. League funds of $15,400 provided scholarships which in turn create career paths for resident women to prepare them for sustainable independence.

NEIGHBORS IN ACTION’S summer enrichment program for low-income children and teenagers in Port Houston offers a variety of summer programs, including an overnight camp,

vacation Bible school, an arts academy, sports camps and educational field trips. The League awarded $13,000 to the Neighbors in Action summer enrichment program which funded the staff and program supplies for the entire summer program.

NORA’S HOME provides affordable lodging, care, education and support for pre- and post-transplant patients and their families. The League supported its Adopt-A-Family Program at $10,000 to offset the cost of families unable to pay the minimal cost associated with their stay.

REBUILDING TOGETHER HOUSTON restores hope for low-income elderly and military veteran residents in Harris County by making critical home repairs. The League provided $10,000 to the Students In Service program, offering student volunteers an opportunity to learn hands-on home repair skills in a compassionate environment while repairing homes for elderly and military residents.

SIRE improves the quality of life for people with special needs and disabilities through therapeutic horsemanship. The tuition assistance program, supported by the League at $15,000, grants opportunities for children and adults with special needs.

THE WORKFAITH CONNECTION equips disadvantaged job seekers with the skills and beliefs to gain employment. Computers and computer lab furniture were funded by the League’s grant of $18,800 for the third WorkFaith program site.

COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE GRANTS ARE AWARDED TO NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS THAT DO NOT RECEIVE

ONGOING VOLUNTEER SUPPORT FROM THE LEAGUE. A COMMITTEE OF LEAGUE MEMBERS CAREFULLY

CONSIDERS EACH PROPOSAL, VISITS AGENCIES TO ASSESS HOW THE GRANT COULD MAKE AN IMPACT, AND

EVALUATES WHETHER OR NOT THE REQUESTS MEET ONE OF THREE ESSENTIAL CRITERIA: ADDRESS A CRITICAL

OR BASIC NEED IN THE COMMUNITY, FUND A PILOT PROGRAM OR EXPAND A SIGNIFICANT SERVICE TO THE

COMMUNITY. IN 2016 – 2017, THE LEAGUE WAS PROUD TO PROVIDE $150,000 TO THE FOLLOWING ORGANIZATIONS.

69TH ANNUAL CHARITY BALL, AMERICAN JOURNEY

A patriotic celebration was

enjoyed by all at the 69th Annual Charity Ball, American Journey. Since 1949, the Charity Ball has served as an opportunity to celebrate the pivotal partnerships that enable the Junior League to continue its mission of training volunteers to champion positive change in the

Houston community each year. For every dollar received, the League is able to significantly increase its value by pairing it with trained volunteers, further setting the League apart and allowing your gift to reach even further.

Held on February 9, 10 and 11, 2017, American Journey raised more than $740,000 in revenue to support the League’s Community Program and volunteer initiatives. Each evening provided a patriotic theme with Thursday night highlighting “Bayou City Lights,” Friday night highlighting “Stars Over Texas” and Saturday night featuring “Sea to Shining Sea.” Several League member “journeys” were captured in video format and intertwined with the Charity Ball show to depict the impact the League can have on the Houston community – one member at a time. The Thursday night preview party offered guests a fun, mix-and-mingle cocktail party atmosphere while Friday and Saturday nights were black-tie affairs featuring crowd-pleasing live entertainment with Reckless Kelly on Friday and Sunset BLVD on Saturday. Craft beer and whiskey tastings along with a competitive wine toss and barbershop quartet packaged the three-night event into an unforgettable time celebrating what unites us.
