We “Run” This Town!
Beyond Team “Orange Crush” runs on snow covered streets
By Bonnie Sexton
I enjoy watching runners achieve new milestones; a first 5k, a
first half marathon, a first 20 miler, a first marathon. There is
something about attaining that next level of accomplishment
that is exhilarating and inspirational. I have been distance
running for more than a decade now, and newer runners always
serve to renew the excitement and enthusiasm, even among long
time runners. There is much to be said for bringing together
the more experienced and novice runners; the sharing of
expertise and knowledge, and energy and freshness of achieving
something brand new. We all learn from each other and share
in our successes. KAR embraces this philosophy through our
"Play not only keeps us young but also maintains our
perspective about the relative seriousness of things.
Running is play, for even if we try hard to do well at
it, it is a relief from everyday cares."

training programs and group runs whether it is the Fast Track
5k Training Program during the summer months, the Beyond
Half and Full Marathon Training Program beginning in
January, the Safari Half and Full Marathon Training Program (a
partnership with Gazelle Sports) during the summer, and our
seven weekly group runs across greater Kalamazoo, Portage and
Battle Creek.
The month of November ushered in a new milestone for
Kalamazoo Area Runners as an organization; an
accomplishment each of us can be proud to have contributed to
……together. For the first time ever, KAR shattered the 1000
member ceiling, with 1001 active members as of November
close. Although there are a small number of clubs in major
metropolitan areas that are substantially larger, this is
remarkable for a region of our size. The top five running clubs
(based on membership numbers) in the nation are listed below.
It comes as no surprise each is located in a major is located in a
major city.
New York Road Runners (NYRR) (60,000 Members and the
largest running club in the Nation)
Atlanta Track Club (ATC) (10,000 Members and the 2nd largest
running club in the Nation)
Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) (8,600 Members,
the largest running club in the Midwest, and the 3rd largest in
the Nation)
Dallas Running Club (DRC) (4,300 Members and the 4th largest
in the nation)
The Memphis Runners Track Club (MRTC) (3600 Members and
5th largest running club in the nation)
Kalamazoo Area Runners is now five times the size it was less
than a decade ago. Back in 2002, when the name changed from
the Kalamazoo Track Club to the Kalamazoo Area Runners, less
than 200 members made up our organization. During the last
decade, we have more than quintupled our size from a small
grass roots organization to where we are today. The
demographics of our membership (from a running perspective)
have also shifted. The Kalamazoo Track Club back in the early
1980’s, and even the two decades following, was a small
collection of competitive semi elite and elite runners. Today,

Kalamazoo Area Runners is comprised of runners of all abilities;
brand new runners preparing for a first 5k all the way to
experienced semi-elite marathoners with the goal to break 3
hours.
The growth experienced by KAR is not only evident within our
membership; it is reflective of many of our events and programs,
as well as the greater running community. The 2012 Kal-Haven
Trail Run set a new record with 580 participants, the Turkey
Trot Time Prediction 5k Run 890 registered participants (797
finishers), the Fast Track 5k training program 90 participants,
and the Run Through the Lights, held Thursday, December 6,
shattered its prior participation record with 1152 registered
participants. 2013 is also the inaugural year for the Winter
Blast Half Marathon & 5k. The Half Marathon attained its cap
of 500 in an exceptionally fast 27 days.
Although the exponential growth in these events over the past
few years is impressive, these are merely the fruit of carrying
out our multi – dimensional mission; to promote the sport of
running as a source of physical, spiritual and social wellness,
while enhancing the quality of life in the community. It is each
individual success story, and each life touched, that are the true
rewards of our efforts. This is accomplished directly through
providing the support and encouragement to those participating
in the sport of running, or indirectly impacting lives in the
community around us, through the organizations our running
events benefit, such as Greater Kalamazoo Girls on the Run,
Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes, MRC Industries, Inc. or through
our fundraising teams.

2012 Kalamazoo Area Runners Turkey Trot Time Prediction 5k Run Establishes a New Participation Record! In 2004, thirty-nine hearty runners participated in the Kalamazoo Area Runners Turkey Trot Time
Prediction 5k Run held at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. In 2005, the event was cancelled
due to Blizzard-like conditions. The following year, 2006, was the birth of a growth trend that has
continued for six years, with only a slight dip in 2011 when the event began charging a registration
fee. In 2009, the event was moved to Portage West Middle School due to improvements made at
KVCC and the need for indoor facilities.
11 | P a g e
Today, the event has become an annual tradition for hundreds of runners, and weather conditions on
November 22 could not have been more favorable with sunshine and unseasonably warm
temperatures. The 2012 Kalamazoo Area Runners Turkey Trot Time Prediction 5k Run shattered its
prior participation record with 890 registered runners (797 finishers) celebrating a healthy start to
Thanksgiving morning.
Rays of sunshine accompany nearly 800 runners at the starting line of the 2012 Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot Time
Prediction Run
We would like to thank all of our participants, volunteers and sponsors for making the 2012 event a
huge success. The Turkey Trot, which serves as a fundraiser for Kalamazoo Area Runners, raised
more than $8,000 towards our operational reserve as we work towards our goal to transition to a
staffed organization. The event also requests in kind and cash donations designated to individuals in
need through the Portage Community Center and Kalamazoo Gospel Mission. Several boxes of
socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries and toys to support the charities. In addition, $140.00 in
cash donations was designated to the Kalamazoo Area Runners, $54 to the Kalamazoo Gospel
Mission, and $26 to the Portage Community Center.
Each year brings about several changes as we strive to make improvements upon past events, and
2012 was no exception. New this year we introduced D-tag chip timing through Great Lakes
Championchip, and welcomed Biggby Coffee and Zeigler of Kalamazoo as Plymouth Rock Sponsors,
contributing to the pre and post-race excitement and amenities.
The overall men’s champion was Timothy Meeker of Mattawan with a time of 17:23:36 and the
overall women’s champion was Jade Hubbard of Kalamazoo with a 19:34:42. Winning overall male
and female masters were Joe Reitz of Schoolcraft (19:03:44) and Megan James of Portage
(20:51:83).

All four overall winners received the coveted “Rubber Chicken Award” for falling short of the true
spirit of the Time Prediction Run.

hens and pies) were:
Allison Haas – 1st Place (.25 seconds off)

Kelsey Broekema – 4th Place (.48 seconds off)

Half Marathon Presented by AT&T
The Half Marathon attained its 500 cap in 27 days, but you can still join us in this extraordinary
community celebration of health and wellness by joining us for the 5k or volunteering. The
inaugural Winter Blast Half Marathon and 5k is organized in partnership by the Kalamazoo Area

Featured Member Article – Introducing Brandon Van Dusen

Just Another Runner’s Story – A Prescription to Run
If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere. - Frank A. Clark
Brandon Van Dusen pictured running the 2012 Chicago Marathon
The holiday season seems to be dictated by commercialism and the almighty dollar. We are
bombarded with advertisements encouraging us to spend our money on electronics, accessories and
other high tech gadgets. Although the signs of commercialism and the holiday season cannot be
avoided examples of the true meaning of the season are just as abundant. There are those moments
year around which remind us of the blessings that we are graced with from life’s simple joys but this
message always seems a bit more obvious as we celebrate Thanksgiving, the New Year and all the
festivities in between. I would suspect that KAR’s member Brandon VanDusen is as aware of the
simple joys in life as well as any of us are. When I first read in KAR’s October Rundown about
Brandon being able to experience the thrill of running a marathon as an adult after being physically
limited to participate in activities as a child that most kids enjoy, because of health concerns, I was
intrigued. After corresponding with Brandon and hearing his story in more detail I was humbled
and inspired as I was reminded of the things in life that are truly important. I hope that his story is
as moving for all of you as it was for me.
Brandon was born with an unhealthy heart. He had to have multiple heart surgeries when he was
three months old. “The surgeries included: coarctation of the aorta (small blood vessel), VSD repair
(holes in my heart), and a pacemaker implant (regulates heart beat). When I was growing up I was
told I couldn't participate in contact sports, due to the chance of unplugging or damaging the wire of
26 | P a g e
the pacemaker.” Brandon’s heart condition was not the only health concern that limited his activities
as a child. The urge to enjoy sports with his peers pulled at him and he did give it a try. “Asthma
also made it hard to participate in physical activities. When I was 5 and 6 I tried to play baseball but
had issues with my asthma and wouldn't participate after the second year.”
Brandon would remain inactive until he was in middle school when he experienced his first taste of
running while watching his older brother compete in track. “When I got to the 7th grade I decided to
run as well. My coach had me run short runs and I took my inhaler before each meet. In high school I
was introduced to cross country. My first run took 33 to 34 minutes. I was the last person to cross
the finish line (boys and girls).” Brandon continued running but when he was 17 years old he
experienced another round of tense moments with his health. “My pacemaker was no longer
working effectively after 17 years. I was always tired, sleeping 10-14 hours at a time. At the start of
the track season I was running an 800 meter race when the pacemaker wouldn't reset and was
shocking me on every heart beat. That night I was rushed to Riley Children’s Hospital to have it
replaced. I ran my senior year, but was still healing. I finished high school slightly over -weight.”
Brandon became even more physically inactive during his college years and gained additional weight,
adding to his health issues. “The summer of 2009 I was suffering from kidney stones. They were
caused by tumors on the parathyroid.” Brandon decided it was time to take care of his body and
strengthen his heart. “Once the tumors were removed I decided I would not spend another year
unhealthy. I started to lose weight after I started to work out on a regular basis. I stopped eating
excessive amounts of food.”
At this point Brandon decided that the best way to lose more pounds and maintain a healthy body
weight was to train for and run a marathon, but this was a decision that could not be made alone
considering his cardiac history. “After talking to my doctors we decided that I could run a marathon,
with one stipulation. If I felt any chest pain I would stop and contact my cardiologist. I was able to
run the Indianapolis and have run 3 additional since then.” His doctor’s prescription for running
seemed to work just as well as any pill he could have taken.
As athletes and runners all of us must be aware of signals that our bodies send us, but I would guess
that Brandon has been forced to master the skill of listening to his body more than the average
runner. I hope that Brandon continues to be able to experience the thrill of running and that this in
turn will continue to make his heart and body stronger. The benefits created by running for our
physical and mental health are well documented. Brandon is a prime example of this.
All of us began running for personal reasons and continue because of these and other motives. I
began running as an adult but there are those who competed as a runner in high school, stopped
because of burn out or other circumstances and started up again with a new vigor years later.
Brandon has a similar history with running. “I started to run at age 12 for school and started to run
for myself at age 21 in 2010.” Running has the potential to symbolize many things in life in that to
enjoy it is crucial that you do it for yourself.
Brandon identifies what he likes most about running is that it gives him time to clear his head and to
relieve stress. What he likes least about running are the leg cramps and pains that come with long
runs. He considers Mr. DeCou his high school track and cross country coach to be his running
mentor. Ryan Hall, one of the most well-known national and international marathon runners is
Brandon’s biggest running inspiration.
27 | P a g e
Brandon’s advice for others involves being patient, a characteristic I am sure that he is familiar with.
“Listen to your body. You may not feel great every time you run, so adjust your run if you need to.
Your training schedule should be flexible to allow for an injury or setback.”
The confidence that comes from reaching new milestones in running is fueled by emotion. When an
individual begins the process of training for a first half-marathon or full marathon these milestones
occur frequently. For Brandon his most memorable moment in running came from realizing that his
goal for completing a marathon was within reach. “One or two weeks before my first marathon I was
on a training run and realized I would be able to finish the marathon. I couldn't stop smiling as I
finished the final mile of the run.”
Patience and frustration are two emotions that are pitted against each other as life goes on. There
are many things in life that cause frustration but patience must win this mini battle with frustration
for each of us to get through life’s struggles and setbacks. I can only imagine the frustration that
Brandon must have fought through as a child as he watched his peers participate in typical childhood
activities while he was forced to watch from the sidelines. These experiences must have equipped
him with the trait of patience that will help him as life continues. Completing four marathons to date
after being restricted from physical activity much of his life must feel like reaching the peak of the
mountain for Brandon but I am sure that his journey has only begun and there are many more
milestones in his horizon.
Everyone has a story. Stay tuned next month for another runner’s story.
Everyone has a story. Stay tuned next month for another runner’s story. As a writer and a writing
teacher my philosophy is that everyone has a story. If you know of a KAR member whose experiences
would make a good running story please contact me at [email protected] with a
brief synopsis of their story. Please contact this individual prior to contacting me to make sure that they
are fine with me writing an article about them. Also include the individuals contact information.
Kalamazoo Area Runners at the Indianapolis Monumental Half and Full Marathon
28 | P a g e
Andrew Simmons, pictured above at the 2012 Club Championship Series, finished 3rd in his age division at the Indianapolis
Monumental Marathon with a 2:47:27.
Twenty-five members of the Kalamazoo Area Runners ran the Indianapolis Monumental Half and
Full Marathon on November 3, 2012 and most of the marathoners were escorted to the finish line by
sleet and cold weather conditions the last few miles. Despite the chill and precipitation, several
finishers set Personal Records, ran Boston Qualifiers and emerged as Age Group award winners.
Andrew Simmons won 3rd place in his age division with a 2:47:24, a blazing 6:23 pace. Ann Olson,
Joe Cekola, Laura Ferrara, John Donaldson Christen McCool and Joel VanderKooi were among
those reporting new PR’s in the marathon, and in the Half Marathon, Brian Meyers and Alayna
Pelfresne. Running Boston qualifying times were pacer Kenneth Brooks, as well as Christen McCool,
Ann Olson, Bonnie Sexton and Andrew Simmons. Congratulations to all our Indianapolis
Monumental Half and Full Marathon winners.
